As the first thread is full, I thought I'd start this one to dip a toe in the water and see if anyone else is still around. At the end of the last thread I think a few of us had decided to have the summer off and come back to it in September - so here I am.

Hope a few of the old gang are still around Smile

Bugger, just eaten half a portion of chips. I was doing so well upto this point. Off to bang my head against a wall

Blodss · 28/10/2015 23:02

Don't worry desperate. Tomorrow is another fresh day and a reboot. I had a bit of a wobble today after reading about peoples quick weight loss. Im doing this to be the healthiest I can be but that also includes weight loss. Thought that I should lose quicker but then thought about it and looked on the web and realised that im doing ok and as I intend this to be a forever way of eating.

ProfYaffle · 29/10/2015 07:37

I can relate to that Blodss. I've lost just short of 50lbs but it's taken 10 months, plus I haven't really lost anything since August. It's easy to think I should be losing more, losing faster etc.

However, I've still lost what I've lost, it's still an achievement. Plus I decided to maintain over summer so that I could let my hair down a bit and have a dieting break. It's shown me that this IS a way of life, I can life this way, enjoy life and not gain weight.

KOKO everyone! It's a long journey we're on, it's not easy. Flowers

I agree with you both, i have lost best part of 2.5st and still feel huge but looking back at photos from when my son was born i am most def slimmer. Online everyone seems to lose the weight in a blink of an eye, so its good to know i am not alone - i still would like to be a size 10 by xmas however!

I have been keeping a close eye on my cals, reducing dairy and fasting and i think i am def loosing quicker now. I am really trying to change the way i think about food and make this a lifestyle change rather than a diet. I must reread why we get fat as i tend to forget about the health benefits. My knees and back hurt less now which is a massive plus.

After chipgate last night i am starving today so having a bit of a fat fast with bpcs to get back in the zone.

Blodss · 29/10/2015 17:11

Prof and desperately....Thank you both so much for posting your thoughts. I really felt like giving up (even though I know I wouldn't) and just posting on the thread helped but getting your replies has made me feel stronger. So Flowers for you both. This thread is just what I need.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 29/10/2015 18:30

Ah thanks Blodds, my first flowers. We are supportive bunch ere! Happy to help.

My little mantra is
Being fat is hard
Losing weight is hard
Pick your hard!!

I think i am still in ketosis as i am not hungry and have the breath! Looking forwards to my dinner mind.

Blodss · 29/10/2015 19:56

I fast a couple of times a week but naturally. I often have. I don't eat anything until about 5 in the evening but that's because I am busy and not hungry. Think it helps though. I once went the Drs. in the morning and hadn't eaten and he did a urine test and he said to me that I was in ketosis. Apparently some people do go into ketosis very easily and especially overnight. I am one of them.

Fluffybrain · 29/10/2015 23:24

I like your mantra desperately. Blodss sample menu. Well today I had fried egg, quorn sausage, half avocado, 3 mushrooms, 2 tomatoes, HP sauce for breakfast, snacked on 81% dark choc and a couple of handfuls of pistachio nuts, cheddar cheese and egg salad for lunch at a pub, caprese salad for dinner. Drank water and lots of tea. Another day this week I had blueberries with almond soya yoghurt for breakfast, avocado and olive and fried halloumi salad for lunch, veggie bolognese with cheese on top or dinner. Another day Brie and veggie bacon and mushrooms for breakfast, quorn sausages fried with onions peppers mushrooms, spinach and garlic for lunch. Veggie chilli with sour cream, guacamole, salsa and cheese for dinner.

Blodss · 29/10/2015 23:35

Thank you Fluffy. I don't eat dairy at all. I don drink alcohol either. Not sure why my weight doesn't shift quicker really except it could be menopausal lol!! I actually don't eat much and naturally fast some days as too busy to eat.
Sample menu Me

couple of times a week no breakfast or lunch and have dinner which would be meat and loads of veg on a small plate (no butter or cheese or cream)

fruit

another day

bacon, egg and mushroom in a little coconut oil

fish and veg ( loads of veg)

80 per cent dark chocolate

berries

I only eat small portions of food as well, on side plates as I don't have a big appetite.

Fluffybrain · 30/10/2015 19:35

Blodss yes I eat from sides plates too as my appetite has gone down massively. I now go with how I feel as to whether I eat and how much. Some days I really don't feel like eating much and others I want to snack little bits all day. I wonder if you are getting enough fat. As you don't eat dairy maybe you could try upping your fat from non dairy sources. Add more coconut oil or olive oil. The fat in your diet encourages your body to use both dietary fat and body fat as fuel.

Blodss · 30/10/2015 20:13

Thanks Fluffy.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 30/10/2015 20:14

I have been eating mindfully and i find i can eat far less and still be satisfied, i was def eating too much before even if low carb and that was hampering my weightloss. Its totm and i have swelled up, my wedding ring is really tight again. Hoping for lots of loo trips and a big whoosh! I have a christening at the end of nov and am hoping to fit comfortably into some of my nice dresses, they currently fit but are just too tight. So less dairy, wine and small portions for me this next month.

KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 08:28

Hi all Smile. I have been directed here by Blodss Thanks. I'm just starting out on my primal/paleo eating and it is quite a learning curve.

I'm going to read through the thread.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 31/10/2015 08:31

Hi Kinky - welcome on board. I am more LCHF rather than primal but there is alot of cross over. Feel free to ask any questions we are a helpful bunch

KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 08:49

I'll give a little bit of context:

Started the year at 15st 11lbs. I did SW yet again, started losing, stopped, started again, stopped, started again... you get the idea Grin.

Managed to get down to 14st 2lbs which I was 3 weeks ago following SW, but my Fibromyalgia flared like it never has before and started reading. Several specialists recommend paleo style diets to help symptoms. I have low carbed and bootcamped on here before, lost a bit but never stuck with it. I have been pretty much vegetarian for nearly 27 years - occasional fish. So when I low carbed before, I ate a lot of dairy.

This time, I have started paleo following the Primal plan from Mark's Daily Apple. I was doing Whole 30, but felt really down as it was too much too soon, so have since introduced a little butter and the odd dash of cream. I also have the odd square of 85% dark chocolate. I've started eating red meat and chicken again, which is so weird and taking a bit of getting used to. I made a beef stew last week and it was so familiar - it is like going back to my childhood. I ate a lot of meat and loved it until I became a very political ten year old and stopped!

My appetite has settled and I am starting to feel better. I weighed 13st 6lb this morning, so about 10lbs down in just under 3 weeks of following this WOE.

Really enjoying it, though getting the odd pang for a big bar of crappy milk chocolate or a slice of pizza Grin. I've not had any cheese and I do miss it.

KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 08:50

Thanks desperately Smile.

ProfYaffle · 31/10/2015 09:28

Hi Kinky and welcome.

I was also veggie for 25 years before returning to the 'dark side'. It's weird because now I'm the world' most enthusiastic carnivore! Hugh Fearnly whittingstall once said that ex-vegetarians make the best meat eaters because we're comfortable with the reality of what we're eating.

I also failed on SW several times though I now think I had/have insulin resistance and that was making it hard for me to lose weight. One of my friends has lost 15st on SW so it clearly works for some.

I see that you've bootcamped before, I don't know anything about the Whole 30 plan, what's the difference between the 2?

OP posts:
KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 12:54

Whole 30 is super clean paleo - meat, fish, eggs, oil (Extra Virgin or coconut), tubers. No dairy, no dark choc treats, no making treat foods out of almond flour. It's a detox-type thing.

whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/

It's nice to hear from a successful ex-veggie. It is still hard to get my head round it, but I know I need to try for health. If anything, I am relearning the density and texture of meat, and portions - I used to eat huge potions of pasta/vege alternatives and I obviously can't do that with meat. Dinner looks so small and yet is so filling Grin. I'm fine with what I'm eating - I'm trying to buy carefully.

KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 12:55

Should have put loads of veg and fruit for Whole 30 too.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 31/10/2015 13:40

I lost VERY slowly on SW as well and gave up again and again. And Exante and everything else. The only thing that ever worked was fags, coffee and starvation in my 20s but now i am respectable mother of 2 it wasnt fitting!!

I had gestational diabetes and realised now was the time. Also Fil got diagnosed with diabetes and its evil.

Low carbing is the ONLY thing that has ever worked, now if i could just cut out dairy - thats proving my sticking point but i have cut down. I am really interested in the health benefits of this WOE and making it a lifestyle change. I am also loving fasting at the minute and am keen on the reported health benefits.

The whole 30 seems hardcore, i would like to try it but i am working my way up to it.

I used to work in the meat industry and i firmly believe everyone should understand that meat comes from an animal and how it is processed. It doesnt magically appear in a shrink wrapped packet at the supermarket. I tend to use a lot of cheaper cuts and slow cook them as they are delicious and cheaper, i always buy british but am not to fussed about organic meat.

KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 13:48

The only thing that ever worked was fags, coffee and starvation in my 20s but now i am respectable mother of 2 it wasnt fitting!! snap!! I would be lying if I said I haven't given serious consideration to using this approach again Grin. I used to mix it up with the odd can of diet coke. My insides must have been weeping.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 31/10/2015 13:55

Haha as a treat before i went out (3x a week) would have a bag of crisps, then drink my own body weight in sugary alcopops and dance until dawn. But i was thin.

ProfYaffle · 31/10/2015 14:15

Oh Lordy, Whole 30 looks daunting!

We don't buy supermarket meat. I'm lucky in that we live rurally and know a lot of people with smallholdings etc. We very often get a text saying something like 'X can get hold of some lambs in January, do you want one for the freezer?' I've currently got beef, mutton, lamb and pork in the chest freezer, all bought in bulk from friends so I know exactly how they lived, which abattoir they went to, how far they travelled etc

Before my friend's pigs went for slaughter I photographed them for her. We posted the photos on facebook and got people saying how they couldn't do it, it's cruel to know the animals before they die etc which makes me Confused Like it's less cruel to raise them intensively, turn a blind eye and just buy shrink wrapped packages in the supermarket. Odd!

OP posts:
KinkyDorito · 31/10/2015 15:46

desperately mine was pints of cider. I could sink loads of them. Lord knows what was absorbing them as it wasn't food. Ah, youth. Grin

Prof I'm supermarket, but have shifted to one that has been noted for better welfare and buy free range or organic. However, I do understand it is a luxury to be able to choose this option. There is a local organic farm with lots of pics that looks fab, but not sure I can manage £15 for a chicken. Supermarket free range one was £7. That is still an awful lot for many people. I am just thankful I get to choose and I hope that by making that choice, more purchase power will lead to prices lowering as demand increases making it affordable for more.

ProfYaffle · 31/10/2015 15:52

Yeah, chicken's difficult to get ethically raised and still reasonably priced. I also tend to stick to Aldi free range though I don't even buy that very often. One of the good things about this woe though is that you can eat chicken thighs which are cheaper than breasts so I can afford to go up a grade iyswim.
