As the first thread is full, I thought I'd start this one to dip a toe in the water and see if anyone else is still around. At the end of the last thread I think a few of us had decided to have the summer off and come back to it in September - so here I am.

Hope a few of the old gang are still around Smile

it's finding something that sparks your interest isn't it? Easier said than done though. Have you thought about a walking group of some sort, seeing as you're doing evening walks already. It sounds quite staid but if you find the right one they can be fab - people to chat with on the walk itself and they very often organise other activities too.

Started veggie version of Atkins mid May and lost 3 stone in 4 months. 2 more stone to go. Find it so easy compared with every other diet I've done. Favourite treats are pistachio nuts, very dark chocolate and quorn bacon with Brie.

ProfYaffle · 23/09/2015 14:31

Welcome Fluffy :) I agree, definitely the best diet I've ever been on. I've never stuck to one for this long before. I once did WW for 3 months and was demented at the end of it!

Funnily enough I was only thinking about low carb vegetarians this morning. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what do you eat? Is it just basically dairy and veg or can you have the meat substitutes too?

OP posts:
Macisback · 23/09/2015 18:12

Yes, I guess I just need to find something that I like to do. i already walk with a friend though and it's a great excuse to catch up on gossip Smile

Waves to fluffy....welcome! And that weightless is impressive, you've done brilliantly is such a short space of time. Yes I'd be interested in any fab veggie recipes you fancy sharing too.

ProfYaffle · 24/09/2015 12:32

Think we'll be having your courgette and feta salad for tea tonight Desperately!

OP posts:
Fluffybrain · 24/09/2015 14:22

Thanks! Yes I do have meat replacement particularly quorn products. Not the breaded stuff just plain. So I make chilli with quorn mince, I have cheese on and guacamole, sour cream etc and have cucumber instead of nachos. For lunch today I had salad with avocado, olives, feta, and buttered asparagus. I often have grilled peppers with melted cheese on. I've just discovered almond alpro soya yoghurt which is very low carb and yummy and nice with a few berries. I love eggs and have them in every way cookable. My appetite has reduced massively in this diet though and I cannot eat big portions at all now. I do not miss the carbs. I have 2 young kids and cook for my sister so I am buttering toast and cooking pasta and dishing out biscuits and it does not bother me. It's like it's changed the way I think and feel about eating. It's magic!

ProfYaffle · 24/09/2015 15:42

That all sounds lovely. Useful to know about the almond yoghurt stuff, I'll have to see if I can find any.

I feel the same about carbs now, I'm not remotely tempted by any of the stuff I'm cooking for other people - not even the roast potatoes!

Macisback · 24/09/2015 16:48

Great food ideas fluffy....cheesy peppers sound lovely.

I'm a bit different to you two in that I do still really miss carbs. The only thing that keeps me on the straight and narrow is the gargantuan amount of weight I have to lose (almost 9st in total) and I just know I've only got a chance of getting it all off if I stick to LC.

ProfYaffle · 26/09/2015 17:01

Gah! Despite going back to being 'good' I'm not losing any weight. I've decided to up my exercise to 4 kettlebell sessions a week and also go back to my fat fast/5:2 mash up as that kick started me earlier in the summer. So fingers crossed for a loss in a week's time.

That pesky wine, eh?!

ProfYaffle · 26/09/2015 19:01

I know! It refuses to be ignored ....

Haha....ye olde prosecco has been my downfall as well this weekend too! I've not actually been on the scales, but I don't feel any lighter. Prof you will be super buff hot chick with four kettle sessions a week!

I made a gorgeous beef stroganoff for a little family dinner party.....recipe below for anyone who fancies making something new (except fluffy, sorry this is a meaty one)

Sirloin steaks (1 per person, sliced)
Paprika
Salt
Black pepper
1 Onion (sliced)
250g mushrooms
Tablespoon French mustard
Splash brandy
Small carton sour cream

Fry onions and mushrooms in butter, then add brandy and briefly flambé and add French mustard
Coat steak in paprika, salt and black pepper and fry until brown on the outside
Add steak and juices to onion pan and stir in cream

I served with veg and cauliflower rice...really simple and felt very decadent for something low carb and so easy to make.

Have a good week everyone!

LetMeBeLight · 29/09/2015 11:53

Hello everyone!

What bloody good timing for me to find this thread again. I weighed this morning and was nearly a stone heavier than I expected to be!!!

I hadn't weighed for a good few weeks and had been hoping for a reasonably decent loss, but instead I got a 5lb gain. I've just got back from a week in the SW, right on the coast. We took the dog and were walking around 10 miles a day on average, and the hills, oh the hills. One day according to my app we climbed 100 storeys!

So even though we ate out every day and drank wine every night, I was expecting a respectable loss. Just goes to show that food trumps exercise when it comes to weight loss.

I have been ill over the last few days and didn't eat at all yesterday, so holding out a vague hope I'm holding on the water weight or something!

Anyway, back on it with abandon. Wedding is booked for April, so I need to pull my socks up. Hoping for around a 2 stone loss by Christmas.

ProfYaffle · 29/09/2015 13:57

Hey! Great to see you Let Me! Hopefully some of that gain will just be water weight or something. I weighed myself on Sunday and somehow managed to gain 3lbs despite being really good, weighed myself again yesterday and the 3lbs magically vanished again Confused The human body is weird sometimes.

Those steaks sounds lush Mac, will definitely give that a go sometime soon.

One thing I made over the summer which was really tasty was some low carb sushi I made. Well, it's not sushi in any authentic sense but I took it along to a sushi evening so I wasn't left out.

I got a pack of cooked sliced beef (the deli kind you get in supermarkets) and marinaded it in sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and ginger (the puree in tubes kind), 5 spice powder and rice wine vinegar. I left it for about half a day in the fridge. Then I got a pack of spring onions, sliced them in half lengthways and microwaved the whole bundle for 2 mins wrapped in wet kitchen roll.

Then I got each slice of beef, laid a strip of spring onion on it and rolled it up lengthways. I tied each end with another strip of spring onion and then sliced it in half between the spring onion ties so I ended up with 2 beef rolls tied with green spring onion.

It's very easy but looks impressive. I've had them with courgette noodles and stir fried pak choi.

Bit better news on the scales this morning, 3lbs off from yesterday. Think I probably need to give myself a few days to settle down from the illness induced 48+ hour fast earlier in the week.

You're definitely right Prof - the human body can be odd. I ate nothing for 2 days, then ate lunch and dinner yesterday (and not particularly healthy ones at that) and lost weight this morning!

Done a 3 mile walk this morning, and will do a 2 miler this evening.

What Kettle Bell routine do you do Prof? I've heard great things about them. Also what size kettle bells would you recommend for a novice?

ProfYaffle · 30/09/2015 14:59

Fantastic news LetMe, long may it continue! Re kettlebells I really like Paul Katami. I've just bought Kettlecise too but it's really boring compared to PK. PK's beginners DVD is excellent I can highly recommend it.

I bought a set of 3 bells on Amazon, 4, 6 and 8 kilos personally I find those plenty heavy enough! I started off with the beginner's DVD using the 4 kilo and I'm now on more advanced workouts using the 6 and 8k. It's honestly the most effective home workout I've ever done, it's made a real difference to my body and fitness.

I've just been trying on old clothes to see what fits. Decided to try on my wedding dress, think it fits but couldn't zip it all the way up as some fabric got caught in the zip. Had a sweaty, panicky 15 minutes trying to get out of it thinking I'd have to throw a coat over it for the school run! Thankfully I managed it in the end without damaging either myself or the dress.

LetMeBeLight · 30/09/2015 16:02

Striking while the iron is hot! Just ordered 3 PK DVDs (beginners, drills and full body drills) and a kettlebell set (2kg, 4kg, 6kg and 8kg).

Strangely looking forward to giving them a whirl.

I can imagine the panic at not being able to get out of your dress before the school run! I must say I did chuckle at the image!!

ProfYaffle · 30/09/2015 16:22

Grin I was very relieved to get out of it!

Have fun with the kettlebells, don't be surprised if you feel like you've been hit by a truck after the first go! You get used to it very quickly. (the workout, not feeling like you've been run over)

SailingNovice · 01/10/2015 12:26

I wasn't on the last thread, hope you don't mind me joining in now?

Ok, so I was very succesful with low carbing a couple of years ago went from 103kg to 80kg. Since then I have been on prednisolone long term with limited mobility and gained it all back and more again! GAH!

Thinking of doing bootcamp in October to get back into low carbing.

LetMeBeLight · 01/10/2015 13:03

All are welcome here Sailing, good to have another member! You don't even need to be a low carber (I'm not), think the only real criterion is wanting to lose weight!

Had a fairly good day yesterday. Walked 5-6 miles and had chicken salad for lunch and spag bol for dinner.

Going to have soup for lunch today shortly then will do chicken and lentils for dinner. Did a dog walk this morning (3.5 miles), no set exercise tonight, but will be doing housework.

My kettle bell stuff is set to arrive on Saturday, so am planning on giving it a bash on Sunday. I shall report back prof! How long is the beginners routine on the dvd? (roughly). Just trying to plan I can best fit it in during the week. Much appreciated (although I may not be saying that after Sunday morning!!)

ProfYaffle · 01/10/2015 14:56

From memory I think it's about half an hour for the workout though it's a good idea to work through the clinic before you plunge into the full routine as it gives you all the techniques.

Welcome Sailing! Make yourself at home Smile

ProfYaffle · 01/10/2015 14:57

Oh Lordy LetMe, I just realised that 'full body drills' is the Krush DVD - that one's tough! I only got that one quite recently, I've worked through it about a dozen times now and still can't finish the end bit! It's very effective though.

OP posts:
LetMeBeLight · 01/10/2015 15:35

I'm only planning on using the beginners one for now! Once I feel ready, I'll move on to the other two, I just thought I may as well buy them all at the same time.

Thanks for the heads up on timings. Sounds perfect, I can work through the clinic then try the routine while I have plenty of time on Sunday, then a half hour session after work/before dinner a few days a week will fit in my day very nicely. Now I just have to do it!

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 02/10/2015 19:39

Hi all .... I am back, had an amazing holiday in wales, the sun shone, the kids were happy and me and hubby got to have some fun after all the stress of house moving and an ill gran.

I will not however be stepping any where near the scales as it will ruin my just back from holiday buzz!! However internally I feel like poo, cider, part baked baguettes (worst kind of processed shitty carbs), ready meals, choc - you name it. So I am going to attempt a bit of a low carb detox -I am thinking green smoothies (with coconut oil and avocado), BPCs and bone broth soups (prob thai style) to kick things off. I am not sure how long I can sustain it but I feel like a proper fatty so needs must.

We have managed to rent out our old house - yay but we have 3 weeks to finish the last of the jobs so our weekends are going to be busy so hoping a good burst of in ketosis energy will help- just need to crash through the no carbs wall first. I also have a housewarming and 65th birthday party next weekend -so its going to be a challenge but the countdown to xmas is beginning.

Glad everyone is doing well and welcome SAILING.

I keep looking at the kettlebells stuff PROF, my gym now do a class I really want to try it -I might beg a childcare favour so I can go and get some technique tips. LETME - letme! know how you get on, I am sure building muscle is the way to go.

I have my hubbys 40th in April and as my baby will be 2 by then my baby weight excuses are starting to look a little thin - unlike me! but I am sooo ready for this bring it on, just must finish this glass of wine first!
