As the first thread is full, I thought I'd start this one to dip a toe in the water and see if anyone else is still around. At the end of the last thread I think a few of us had decided to have the summer off and come back to it in September - so here I am.

Hope a few of the old gang are still around Smile

I made the paleo mince pies - not half bad! The pastry is a little more difficult to work than normal but it's crisp (reminds me of my Nan's lard pastry) and buttery. Yum Xmas Smile

They sound lovely Xmas Smile.

I haven't made anything for me as it will just be me eating them, but might well in New Year week if I feel cheated over Christmas. For now, nuts and Nakd bars.

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 25/12/2015 20:59

Let's not mention the past couple of days.

Happy Christmas all.

AlwaysBeYourself · 26/12/2015 00:56

Hi Everyone. Hope you had a peaceful day but how did you all do with your eating? Im doing ok and have lost another 3lbs so that feels good and keeps me on this paleo/lowcarb path. Havent really eaten much rubbish as it doesn't appeal that much but have eaten a couple of lovely truffles as I found some in my stocking (couple of boxes). Have bought myself some lovely salamis, olives and goats cheese to enjoy with Shloer and celery and maybe a couple of oatcakes at some point.

How you all doing?

ProfYaffle · 26/12/2015 10:29

Didn't do too bad food wise but drank too much cider. I got a present of 2 x 2 litre jars of artisan pork scratchings!

AlwaysBeYourself · 26/12/2015 16:15

Sorry I didn't really mean that mince piece, choccies, bread, stolen etc is rubbish just that it is to my body at the moment.

Sounds like your doing ok Pro Smile

I was a good girl and went and did a HITT workout and some muscle training. Celebrated after by having some fried and drained salami, olives, goats cheese, apple and tomato followed by some truffles. Yummy.

Fluffybrain · 30/12/2015 17:46

Hope you all had a good Xmas. I have been mainly good and a little bit bad in places. A few tiny bits of stollen. Half a mince pie, chocolate pudding, no booze, lots of dark chocolate, lots of nuts, lots of cheese. I haven't been on the scales yet. But probably will in the next couple of days.

ProfYaffle · 30/12/2015 17:51

I've carried on in my usual vein. I've not had a single chocolate/mince pie/cake etc - not a crumb. I have drunk far too much though. I normally do dry January but won't be this year as when dh is in active treatment I'll have to lay off the booze for running him to hospital and being on standby incase I need to hotfoot him back in. I don't want to have dry January then find I can't drink for most of February either!

I have really felt the lack of exercise. Only a week off and I can tell I've lost muscle tone, I've kettlebelled yesterday and today and ache so much! Can't believe how much fitness I've lost in such a short space of time.

ProfYaffle · 01/01/2016 11:22

We had a second present opening at pil yesterday. Upon reviewing the totality of my gifts, I've realised they're all pork scratching or beer themed! Grin Sums up my year really!

Bleurgh.

Saying nothing but marking place.

princessconsuelabannahammock · 01/01/2016 22:11

Hi all happy new year! So i am back, much damage has been done. I dont start until tomorrow as after our nye celebrations i NEEDED bacon sarnies this morning and a cheeky bacardi and d coke at lunch out today.
My diet and healthy living starts in the AM.
I feel yuck and bloated and heavy, hubby feels the same.

We have family over tomorrow for dinner so i am making roast pork, i will resist the roasties. I will be having many green smoothies and sticking to 2 meals a day. I intend on running tomorrow, i am scared as i havent done half of what i planned to this xmas and feel less fit, if that makes sense. I did do the boxing day 5k and came last!

Fluffybrain · 01/01/2016 22:30

Prof you are amazing! Not even a mini mince pie?!!!

Kinky. Come on you can tell us!! What's the damage?

Princess the Boxing Day 5K is pretty impressive no matter coming last!!

New year, fresh start!

ProfYaffle · 03/01/2016 09:17

Well done on the 5k Princess. What sort of 5k was it? Parkrun or a club run?

For New Year, I'm planning on trying to eat more veg and 'proper' meals. I've found it too easy to slip into grabbing a pack of pork scratchings or some sliced meat and cheese rather than eating in a more rounded sort of way. Plus, once the house is back to normal, I'll find it easier to get back on the exercise band wagon. And, though I'm not doing dry January, I'm going to be a bit more sensible than I've been the past few weeks. And I'll be sticking to dry white, no more cider for a while.

I am kind of dreading what dh being in hospital will do for my weight. I know from past experience that it's hard to be 'good' when you're faced with hospital food provision and are short on time from all the running around. I'm also a bit worried about finding time to keep exercising. I really want to do it, certainly don't want weeks off around his radiotherapy. It seems like a trivial thing but it's also about wanting to hold onto 'normal' iyswim.

OP posts:
AlwaysBeYourself · 03/01/2016 21:08

Well done Princess

Well done Pro. I have more or less kept to this too and all with no alcohol at all. (easy for me as I don't drink other than water of course).
As you really want to keep to this woe when your DH is going through treatment couldn't you just see it as a way to keep a part of yourself. Stock up on things that you can carry with you in a lunch box and always refill it. It will give you something to concentrate on when things are difficult. Just a thought.

ProfYaffle · 04/01/2016 06:52

Today is my low carb anniversary, it's exactly a year since I started LCHF. Food wise I haven't slipped up once, no chips, no cakes, no crisps etc etc (though I have had days when I've eaten too much cheese and loads of days when I've drunk too much!) So I'm hopeful that this woe is so ingrained in me now, I can't imagine popping into the hospital Burger King any time soon!

The approach you outline is what I'm hoping to do. It helps that my Mum will be staying with us while dh is in hospital so she can be my 'wife' and at least keep the fridge stocked with what I need etc. He should only be in about 5 days for the first op but it's the 6 weeks of radiotherapy that will be a real challenge.

AlwaysBeYourself · 04/01/2016 13:35

How much have you list in a year Pro

ProfYaffle · 04/01/2016 14:03

I lost 3.5st in the first 6 months, had the summer off and maintained, then tried to get back into it. Since September I haven't lost much in weight but have lost inches, I assume because I've been kettlebelling like mad and have gained muscle. I started 2015 a size 20 and am now 14/16.

OP posts:
KinkyDorito · 04/01/2016 14:52

Prof you've done so well. Sending much love. Hospital is tough to navigate, but there is usually fridges to keep food on the wards where patients are in for longer. I used to do a bit of walking out too - going for air. I would take hand cream and plenty of water too - I used to dehydrate fast and all the hand gel plays havoc on your hands. DD was in and out over 2.5 years when she was on chemo. The longer stays were about 6 weeks. I used to feel like I lived at hospital.

Fluffy I have gained about 4lbs and totally fallen off the wagon. I look bigger than that though as haven't been able to swim in ovver 2 weeks and that has taken a toll. Thankfully, I am feeling strangely motivated now and have clambered back on, though I may up my grains slightly as I was having a few problems before the festive period that I need to iron out. I'm back off sugar, dairy and wheat. I was having no grains or beans before Christmas, but might have the odd portion of rice/quinoa/beans now just to see if it helps. I've also started to have alpro almond milk again, which I cut out on W30.

I definitely feel different this year. Normally, I start overeating in November and put on a stone (on top of being heavy already), then feel ridiculous and sorry for myself. I did have treats and eat too much, I admit that, but probably for about 8 days which is nothing compared to usual years. I also really miss swimming, so developing that routine over the past few months has really paid off. I feel like it is part of me now and I'm looking forward to getting back to it.

Here's to a fabulous 2016. Smile

AlwaysBeYourself · 04/01/2016 15:27

Cheers KInky Grin

AlwaysBeYourself · 04/01/2016 15:40

Does anyone use a spiralizer? Im thinking of getting one and spiralizing my sweet potatoes, onions, corgettes, apples, peppers, apples etc and making yummy sauces to put on.

ProfYaffle · 04/01/2016 15:55

Oh that sounds tough Kinky. How is your dd now? That's one major blessing, dh's tumour is benign. He won't be having any long stays in hospital (thankfully) but if they go with radiotherapy it's travelling to a hospital 1hr 15 mins away every day for 6 weeks. So with commuting time it will basically take over our lives.

Thanks for the flowers Always, forgot to say before!

ProfYaffle · 04/01/2016 15:56

I don't have a spiralizer but I do have julienne peeler which I really like. My favourite is courgette noodles (cold) with peanut sauce and hard boiled egg.

OP posts:
AlwaysBeYourself · 04/01/2016 17:53

Might just get myself a julienne peeler then. Does the same thing doesn't it?

ProfYaffle · 04/01/2016 18:15

I've never used a spiralizer but I presume it's a bit more spirally Grin Personally I just prefer to have a smaller, handheld device that I can chuck in the dishwasher and back in the drawer rather than having yet another gadget iyswim.
