As the first thread is full, I thought I'd start this one to dip a toe in the water and see if anyone else is still around. At the end of the last thread I think a few of us had decided to have the summer off and come back to it in September - so here I am.

Hope a few of the old gang are still around Smile

I know exactly what you mean Kinky. I just chucked mine away. tbh I was so sick of the sight of them all I knew I'd never wear them again no matter what happened. I delighted in just binning them.

I'm going to sell a couple of dresses on eBay. Always...banana ice cream? Do you mean you mash banana and then freeze it and that's it?

Advice please...where are the best places to eat out in terms of all the big chain restaurants we all have and what low carb meals are people eating there?

ProfYaffle · 01/12/2015 14:26

I find a pubby type place, Wetherspoons, Marston's, that kind of thing is usually good. Also Nando's, La Tasca, Cafe Rouge, all good. I've found most places are quite good about replacing chips with salad or just leaving the potato option off. What's the burger place called, Great British Burger maybe? Also Byron Burger which is similar, both give the option to have just the burger with toppings, no bun or chips which can be OK with the right sides.

On the flip side, Pizza Hut was awful and I don't think Wagamama do anything suitable either.

Sorry, missed the 2nd part of your question. My standard meals out (please assumed +salad on the end, as there always is!) are:

steak (Cafe Rouge with truffle mayo is amazing!)
Hunter's Chicken
Butterfly chicken (Nando's)
Chicken skewers (Wetherspoons)
Some type of salad
Anti pasti sharing board/platter
Tapas style mini sharer plates

I have just been to the hairdressers and she told me my hair has really thinned out. She's even suggested supplements, though they won't make it thicker again.

I know it's probably the diet - I'd noticed losing a lot, but didn't realise how much. Does anyone know what might be causing this and what I can do about it?

AlwaysBeYourself · 01/12/2015 17:10

kinky I have heard of many women losing hair and messing with periods on too low calorie diets and too low carb diets. You don't have to eat wheat but what about the odd oatcake with hummus and porridge. You can get these gluten free

AlwaysBeYourself · 01/12/2015 17:13

Could you tell me what you are eating in a week , roughly. You can also have grains and breads that are non wheat ie, millet/buckwheat etc

AlwaysBeYourself · 01/12/2015 17:16

Fluffy you freeze bananas first then pop them in a blender and whizz until you get to the consistency of real ice cream. Pop in flavours if you want like chopped nuts, chocolate, real vanilla.

KinkyDorito · 01/12/2015 18:06

I'm thinking along the same lines Always. Had some white rice with tea for the first time in 6 weeks!

Typical day:

scrambled eggs in olive oil

spinach, avocado, olives and mackerel (tin in brine) with olive oil/balsamic vinegar
2 satsumas and a handful macadamia nuts

salmon, broccoli, cauliflower, few roast potatoes in olive oil OR cougetti spaghetti, tin tuna (spring water), garlic, capers and olives OR beef stew with veg inc parsnips (do have occasional potato/sweet potato - maybe twice a week)

However, aim to swim 3 times a week and am distance training for an hour at a time, so don't stop, moderate pace throughout. Might go wild and have a banana on those days Grin. Do think I might be a bit low cal at times. I don't think I am, but I'm quite a big person - broad, tall - and probably burn around 700 kcals per swim.

I'm also a pest for feeling peckish and eating gherkins from the jar... Blush

KinkyDorito · 01/12/2015 18:07

Should say do wonder... I'm thinking all over the place!

KinkyDorito · 01/12/2015 18:07

Sorry, also couple of coffees with coconut oil.

KinkyDorito · 01/12/2015 18:15

However, just read this on Mark's Daily Apple:

Were you vegetarian before? One thing I read a while back was that when people aren't eating enough protein, their hair basically dies and stops growing. Then when they are eating right again a new hair pushes the old one out. So they think that the food they are currently eating is the cause of the hair loss, when actually it was the preceeding diet and really their hair is growing again now.

Hmmm...

AlwaysBeYourself · 01/12/2015 18:18

Sounds like you are not getting enough Cals. You may need more carbs in the form of bananas and grains. Amaranth, wild red or/and brown rice. Hummus. Buckwheat toast. If your exercising so hard your body may need good carbs. These may be fine for your fibro

KinkyDorito · 01/12/2015 18:21

Thanks Always will definitely have a go. Fancy the wild rice, never had amaranth, so that will be a new one to try.

I do have some baby hairs sprouting, so hopefully it's just a blip. My hair is usually very thick. Now she's pointed it out, the penny has dropped and I'm quite alarmed. It's always in a bobble, so easy not to notice.

AlwaysBeYourself · 01/12/2015 18:44

If you always have it tied up what about a new cut that's shorter and thicker looking

Fluffybrain · 03/12/2015 13:08

Thanks for the banana recipe Always. Sounds good to the kids too.

Prof, thanks some good suggestions. Slightly complicated by me being vegetarian but am going to look at la tasca menu. I used to love wags and yes there's nothing there unless I was to eat fish.
Kinky my experience is that it's the lack of protein, fat and range of vitamins and minerals. I don't see how it can be the lack of carbs as there is no nutritional value in carbs. Your average day sounds good. If I were you I would add more fat and more protein and take a vitamin supplement with iron. I've been taking vitamins since I started low carbing. I think I already said up thread that when I tried alternate day fasting my hair started falling out and my periods went odd. It came back when I stopped. I naturally have thick long hair and don't get split ends so I'm lucky. I think it was the lack of nutrition on fasting diet that did it rather than low cal or low carb. Even so it does not sound like your daily intake is low cal anyway.

AlwaysBeYourself · 03/12/2015 13:38

Fluffy sorry but I would have to disagree with you saying there is no nutritional value in carbs. There are many vitamins and minerals in carbohydrates. Eg wheat germ , potato, different rices and grains. Carbs can be very important for the body especially in times of illness. The brain for instance needs carbs/glucose. Athletes often carb load when necessary even if they are generally primal eaters.

KinkyDorito · 03/12/2015 13:43

Thanks both of you Xmas Smile. I'm sticking with what I'm doing, adding in iodine as a supplement and the occasional portion of white rice. I have baby hair growing, so I hope that's a sign it's improving. I will keep a close eye. I certainly have more energy from this WOE so not in a hurry to give up.

AlwaysBeYourself · 03/12/2015 13:44

Even when low carbing you are eating carbs in the form of fruit and veg.

ProfYaffle · 03/12/2015 16:19

Very true Always. When I first started this woe I got some hair loss but it settled down fairly quickly.

OP posts:
KinkyDorito · 03/12/2015 17:04

It's getting colder - hopefully it will grow quickly or I will have to buy a hat Xmas Grin.

Fluffybrain · 03/12/2015 21:41

Always, yes I see the point you are making. I agree that there is nutritional value in a lots of high carb foods as you mentioned. But the nutrition in them doesn't come from the carbohydrate element itself. Carbohydrates in these foods are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. So not an essential nutrient. Sugars are not essential. (Obviously there are exceptions as you say in illness like with diabetics). But as long as a person is carrying around sons body fat then the body can convert body fat into energy instead and it is a much simpler process than converting carbs into energy.

"Carbohydrates are a common source of energy in living organisms; however, no carbohydrate is an essential nutrient in humans.[19] Humans are able to obtain all of their energy requirement from protein and fats, though the potential for some negative health effects of extreme carbohydrate restriction remains, as the issue has not been studied extensively so far." Wikipedia

Yes many athletes do carb load but there is evidence now that this may not be the best diet for them. There is a documentary that explains the science in this and i will try to find it. But I think it said that the only athletes who had to carb load were those who needed a sudden burst of high energy like 100 metre runners. Endurance athletes can improve performance in some cases by low carbing.

An I found it. Have a watch it's quite interesting...

Right ladies i need some help. I have been messing about and understandably given the rigidity of this woe i havent been seeing results. There is stuff going on in RL that is making me stressed leading me to comfort eat and suffer from insomnia. I am at least now realising this and when i am have fallen off the wagon i am quick to get back on it. Today i ate the entire contents of my advent calendar and then the biscuits (for cheese) i bought for xmas - shame faced!

I can def see the changes, 16 months ago (3 months after DS was born) i was nearly a size 22 and now i am a large 16. I am def fitter - although a long way to go. Recently whilst i have been sticking to the principals i am struggling to eat enough proper food and have been eating my cals via bpcs, cheese (although less than before), chicken wings, processed meat and not enough veg - this is obviously not good.

Now i am a bit slimmer certain bits i.e my tummy seem bigger than before. I am addressing this through exercise but its just so bloody slow that i am getting disheartened.

I know its a lifestyle change and slow weightloss is the best and this woe is healthier etc etc but i just want to fit into my size 14s and not feel like a frump. I think its in part due to xmas and sparkly dress shopping - last year i actually cried in a shop! I never cry.

Does anyone have a spare kick up the bum, sage words of advice, a miracle cure to get me into a size 14?I need to fall in love with this woe-ing again - help please.

(gosh that feels better getting it out!)

AlwaysBeYourself · 04/12/2015 00:26

Fluffy thanks for the interesting link.

I do get your point too. Im eating paleo because I don't agree with cutting most carbs out as there is evidence that our ancestors did eat some tubers and grains that grew wild. I think its a case of eating the way you feel is right for you and that you feel you can do for life.

AlwaysBeYourself · 04/12/2015 00:39

desperately in my opinion you have to choose a way of eating that you can do for life otherwise you will definitely end up bingeing as you are doing now. Deprevation will always lead to bingeing and then trying to extreme diet. It sounds like low carb is causing you to have disordered eating which is never good. Could you look at clean eating and see if it may suit you better.

Fluffy the grains I am referring to in paleo eating are things like buckwheat which is in fact fruit.

Desperately Don't feel bad just maybe look at some other ways of eating that still reduce carbs but not totally remove them and only use low gi carbs. To be honest, I am not enjoying how I am eating at the moment. I had started really disliking dark chocolate. I don't agree with too many nuts as they are estrogenic when eaten in too high quantities. I don't like eating fat as it doesn't agree with me. I am going to try more clean eating myself which allows for more grains. I have lost 1 stone and a half since June and don't want to gain but I need to move on to something I can sustain. It will still be full of fruit and veg first and foremost for the nutrients but I don't want to eat too much meat or fat.
