Do you weigh a lot more than you look?

I had a medical check up this week and was slightly horrified to learn that I am officially obese (BMI 31).

But here's the thing: I'm almost 5'8'' and wear size 14, and have done for at least 8 years. Some of my clothes are really old and still fit fine. None of my skirts are tight around the waist. So how the actual crap have I gained nearly 2 stone in 6 years WITHOUT NOTICING?

(btw I'm not in denial - portion control and exercise are now my best pals. I hope to lose the excess timber over the next year).

work out your BMI for yourself on the charts online. See if it's the sandy.

Milllli · 26/03/2015 15:13

same !!!!Smile

Fairy13 · 26/03/2015 15:16

I'm a size 16, 5"10 and weigh 15st7.

I know I'm overweight but 15 stone is LOADS and I genuinely don't look that overweight.

Pyjamaface · 26/03/2015 15:22

I'm 6' and a size 16 and I weigh 15 st 6

It's a massive weight but I genuinely don't look huge and I'm only classed as overweight not obese

Fairy13 · 26/03/2015 15:24

I'm glad you popped up pyjama at least I know Im not totally in denial!

itsveryyou · 26/03/2015 15:29

I look in the mirror and think I look fine, though am heavier around the hips/bum area, a tall pear shape. But when I look at photographs of myself, I think I look huge! I'm 5ft 11, size 12 tops/14 bottoms and am 12st 4. BMI is 24 I think, which is the upper end of the healthy range.

WasabiPeace · 26/03/2015 15:30

I'm 5'3, a comfortable size 12 (10 in Next...) and somehow I am nearly eleven stone.

I must have bones made of lead.

LL0015 · 26/03/2015 15:37

I'm as skinny as a rake with big boobs. I can wear an 8 in Bravissimo clothes Grin but if it's high street then I can't do up size 10 across my bust. Size 10/12 jeans.

I'm 5'7" and weigh 10 1/2 stone making my BMI 23

So my point of posting is that body shape has a huge role to play. Take off my boobs and I would probably be underweight according to this one particular method of measurement.

angelos02 · 26/03/2015 15:40

Me too. I weigh around 11 and a half stone which sounds a lot but I'm 5'9 so seem to get away with it. Clothes are usually a size 12.

ShelaghTurner · 26/03/2015 15:47

I bloody hope so because if I look as heavy as I am then I'm never leaving the house again :(

WaitingForEgg · 26/03/2015 16:02

I'm exactly the same
I am curvy, very large boobs and wider hips. I'm short (just under 5,3) and last time I went to the GP was told I am obese (31)
I am a size 12
I have managed to gain over a stone in the last few years without realising
I am not at my slimmest but certainly don't look obese (i'm really not in denial, my waist is 29 inches)
I can't remember the last time I was a healthy weight on the BMI though in all honesty. When I got married i'd slimmed down to a small size 10/large 8 and was still classed as overweight
Trying to shift a bit now and struggling as I don't eat a huge amount as it is

Pyjamaface · 26/03/2015 16:03

Me too Fairy Grin

StrangeGlue · 26/03/2015 16:04

I think so cause when those 'how much do you weigh' threads are on here people seem to say they need to weigh 9st to be a 12 at 5'5" where as I'm easily a 10 on top 12 on bottom at 10st 4lbs.

Ppl never believe I weigh as much as I do either.

f1fan2001 · 26/03/2015 16:11

I tell my partner I have reverse body dysmorphia - I think I look thinner in the mirror than I actually am

Although I did have the pleasant experience of being told by my doctor to not lose weight but had to tell him I was BMI obese and could do to lose a couple of stones Shock I am in Brazil however !

QOD · 26/03/2015 16:30

It's weird .... I'm 5ft and weigh 12 St 7lb .... BMI 34 and obese.
Yet wear size 12/14 which Is below average size?

juneybean · 26/03/2015 16:31

People are always surprised when I say I'm obese. My bmi is 34 but I seem to carry it well although I myself feel absolutely huge!

netty7070 · 26/03/2015 16:32

The nurse took my waist measurement; it was only 31''.

I think I must be all hip n' thigh. Confused

OP posts:
26Point2Miles · 26/03/2015 16:44

Are you marathon training?

I'm 6 foot tall and size 14.... My calves and thighs are now muscle and I dare not step back on the scales.

PrincessOfChina · 26/03/2015 16:44

I'm the same (although heavily pregnant right now so a bit different).

Before pregnancy I was 12 stone 7 ish and 5'5" ish. Makes my BMI about 30 yet I'm an easy 14, a 12 in places like Gap and Next.

I do need to lose weight post baby but it's confusing because I'll have to lose over 2 stone to get into the healthy range yet I know from experience I'll still only be a 12 due to body shape.

StrumpersPlunkett · 26/03/2015 16:50

I currently weigh 14.5 stone
I am 5.7 and a size 18
however, when I was 18years old I wore a size 10 and was 7.5 stone.

I know that my target weight is 10.5 stone-11 stone and that would get me to a comfortable size 12.

People seem astonished that I need a size 18 (ladies in clothes shops when I go to try things on) because I am a true apple who dresses her size well. I have slender legs and wear skinny jeans so they assume good legs = not too overweight however I am a true lardarse who is trying hard to change things.

EmilyWatkins123 · 26/03/2015 16:55

I never trust highstreets and their idea of 'size measurement'. I'm 5.4' and weigh about 9st but every store I go into I seem to be a different size. As long as you feel happy and healthy ladies, don't think it matters what size or weight you are.

BiddyPop · 26/03/2015 16:55

I am 5'4", 12st(12 this week - was 8 a month ago) and working my way back from 13st6 last September. (Aiming for 10st7 long term - shorter term is 12st by June wedding of SIL, and hopefully 11st10 or lower by Sept wedding of DSis).

But I don't look huge. I wear clothes that fit, and suit my shape/size. I look confident not slouched. And the weight is a little concentrated around my middle but reasonably well balanced generally.

I am the skinniest of my DSiblings (the girls) - 1 other dresses to suit her current shape/size and also looks confident/well, so yes looks heavy but not massive. One of the others who is smaller than her dresses really badly, too tight things and also not suited shapewise to HER shape, and also slouches - so LOOKs massive. And some of them hold the extra weight in areas which are a lot more obvious than others.

I have fluctuated, since 2001, between highs of roughly 13st7 and lowest of about 11st. So I know I can drop more than I have, and I want to get back to at least comfortable in size 16, hopefully 14 - but the label is less important to me than the fit.

flanjabelle · 26/03/2015 17:02

I really don't understand this, why do some people show their weight so much more?? I'm 5ft6, 12stone2 and size 16 on a good day!! I wish I didn't show my weight so much!!!

juneybean · 26/03/2015 17:11

Oo flanja I'm 15.4 and 5'6 and can sometimes get in a 16. It's very weird!

swooosh · 26/03/2015 17:57

I'm 5'4 and 67kg. I used to be the same size at 55kg. However I am now weight training and mostly muscle rather than 'skinny fat'. I'm a size 10.
