Do you weigh a lot more than you look?

I had a medical check up this week and was slightly horrified to learn that I am officially obese (BMI 31).

But here's the thing: I'm almost 5'8'' and wear size 14, and have done for at least 8 years. Some of my clothes are really old and still fit fine. None of my skirts are tight around the waist. So how the actual crap have I gained nearly 2 stone in 6 years WITHOUT NOTICING?

(btw I'm not in denial - portion control and exercise are now my best pals. I hope to lose the excess timber over the next year).

Personally I think how you feel matters more than a number on a scale, as evidenced by this thread - not sure how useful weight and BMI are really.

I'm 5'8", wear size 16 jeans and coats, and size 14 for most everything everything else. My BMI is 23 currently as I weigh about 11 stone but it used to be higher (seem to have lost 1-2 stone recently) and honestly? You can't see a difference, nobody has noticed!

For me half a stone lies between chubby and slim

I look bad with a bmi higher than 23 Confused

It all goes to bum and thighs so look out of proportion with skinny arms/waist/ankles and flabby bum and thighs.

Annoying!

I am 5'6" and I'm a size 16 whether I'm 11.5 or 14 stone. I'm all tits 'n' arse with broad shoulders and a small waist, and I exercise. I am about 6lb over a healthy weight now and constantly told I don't need to lose weight. I def do! A great fitting bra also makes a difference, I looked like I'd lost a stone when I got the right size.

i-don't-now, you don't look fat to me

about the same as me. I'd say. But I weigh 12 stone at 6 ft, and wear size 12.

same for goodasitgets.

I only put weight on bum/tum/thighs, my arms and legs always stay slim (skinny bony arms, ankles etc.), so i look out of proportion/fat, IYSWIM.

Both of you maybe spread the weight more evenly, resulting in a softer feminine shape without looking fat.

Me, I am not putting a pic up!!!

I have a confession, I weighed myself, I'm only 14 stone so somewhere in the last 6 months I've lost weigh, probably with all this morning sickness Hmm
