Do you weigh a lot more than you look?

I had a medical check up this week and was slightly horrified to learn that I am officially obese (BMI 31).

But here's the thing: I'm almost 5'8'' and wear size 14, and have done for at least 8 years. Some of my clothes are really old and still fit fine. None of my skirts are tight around the waist. So how the actual crap have I gained nearly 2 stone in 6 years WITHOUT NOTICING?

(btw I'm not in denial - portion control and exercise are now my best pals. I hope to lose the excess timber over the next year).

That's 10.5 stone, sorry, working in kg here Grin

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 26/03/2015 18:01

Another one who's 5ft 8" and weighs more than I look, I'm sure. I don't think I'm just delusional. I'm about 13stone 5 but only wear a size 14. I have got very, very large boobs (M cups) and big feet etc so maybe I'm just heavy set.

BareFacedKitty · 26/03/2015 18:03

I'm 5ft 6, weigh 12st and wear a size 12 mainly, though tops are usually a 10. I run and lift weights but there is certainly an excess stone to shift. At my lightest, 10st 7, I wear a size 8 and get told I look too thin!

GingerCuddleMonster · 26/03/2015 20:26

I'm 5ft 3 a size 12 and weigh....14stone. I have muscle mass from weight lifting and other forms of excersice, but also still carrying about a stone of baby weight (ds is 7mo) I've taken a step back from the dieting for a month after collapsing Sad I'm going to start again in April after the chocolate eggs Grin.

flanjabelle · 26/03/2015 20:42

Life just isn't fair.

LionessQueen · 26/03/2015 20:46

See I just don't get this... I'm 5' 4. Weigh 12st9 yet I'm still a size 16. Whyyyyy?!

sootballs · 26/03/2015 20:53

I'm 5'8 ans i can put on a great deal of weight before it shows. Which is why I'm 4 stone overweight. And on a diet.

Artfooldodger · 26/03/2015 21:04

Hmm! I'm 5'9" and weigh 17st 6lbs which makes my BMI 36 and obese. But I comfortably fit a size 18 and don't look huge. Yes I know I'm overweight & am on a constant diet, but it just never shifts ??

Think I'm going to have to simply stop eating - hopeless!!!!

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 26/03/2015 21:08

I'm the opposite. I weigh less than anyone would think. I am a 10 or 12, depending on the shop. I have a very small frame, but masses of podge. I weigh 8 st 8 lb. I must be all fat, no muscle. I am 5 foot 1.

Trills · 26/03/2015 21:11

I carry most of my weight on my thighs and calves.

So as long as I stay out of pencil skirts, smaller sizes fit just fine (because they are tight around the bust/tummy/bum but not tight below that).

SoMuchForSubtlety · 26/03/2015 21:21

Yes. Post pregnancy I weigh more than I did pre-pregnancy but I'm mysteriously a dress size smaller. I don't get it. I think it's leg muscles from carrying the extra 4 stone of baby weight around towards the end of my pregnancy!

emwithme · 26/03/2015 21:24

5'7", size 14 bottom, 18 top (F boobs and broad shoulders). Weigh normally about 14 1/2 stone, currently feeling fat at 15.2 (but still comfortably in my 14 bottoms), going back to SW when I get the oomph.

People tell me I can't weigh what I do. I do. Trust me.

m0therofdragons · 26/03/2015 21:43

I find the comment "I'm a size 16 and really don't look that big" a bit odd. If you're size 16 surely you are overweight and do look quite big? I really don't mean that to sound as nasty as it probably comes across. I'm size 12 but not slim.

BumWad · 26/03/2015 21:45

Yes me. When not pregnant I am 5'2 and 11stone 2 pounds. Apart from big boobs I am a size 12.

Strictlyison · 26/03/2015 21:52

I'm 5'7 and a biscuit and 10 stones 11. I have b cup boobs and my weight is evenly distributed. I don't have much of a waist, but my bum is flat and my legs are quite slim, I am size 14 and there's no way that I look obese, or feel obese, even if my BMI is quite high. I feel quite fit and run 10k twice a week. People tell me that I look slim - I don't think I am slim but I don't 'look' fat because my weight is evenly distributed!

Dowser · 26/03/2015 22:15

Ihave clothes in my wardrobe from a size 8-18 and they all fit

( to some degree)

Some might have a bit more tum on show than others!

Milllli · 27/03/2015 03:59

Motherif your five foot 9 and size
16 then you look ok. Size 16 when your short looks bigger.

I'm 5 2 and11st and size 12. No body thinks I look overweight though, it's all 'by you're thin!'

I find it strange, especially on the thread running at the moment about skinny role models how many people who are listing their weight and height and dress size are my height and size 8.

can't figure it out, I need to loss weight but to be a size eight I'd be going the other way. I do wonder how much this waist measurement takes in body shape differences, I mean you have people that are just small all over and others that have broad hips andmany other body shapes

Honeypot1 · 27/03/2015 06:05

Don't forget, rugby players are "obese". Our genetic and/or training muscle/fat ratio has a lot to do with our weight! Even as a size 8 I was 10.5 stone so now I'm 12 stone and size 14 I use the mirror and my clothes to judge weight loss - not the scales!

Happiness comes in all shapes and sizes!

Skeppers · 27/03/2015 06:14

5ft 11 and 18 stone here. I wear a size 18. I see pictures of women on weight loss articles/TV who weight 2 stone less than me, but look huuuuuuge. Ok, I'm carrying some extra weight, I'm not denying that, but it's proportionate. I run / work out and eat well. People are always shocked when I tell them how much I weigh! I'm just SOLID. Grin

SayraT · 27/03/2015 07:56

I sometime think that about me, I am 5ft 7 and weigh nearly 16 stone and wear size 16 clothes but when I look online for picture of people who are the same height and weight as me My Body Gallery I realise that they do look like me and they look overweight and so do I.

People are surprised at what I weigh but I think that is because many people are not honest so others don't know what 16 stone actually looks like.

Is anyone else willing to post a photo with their height, weight and clothes size so we can see what different people look like? I will find one in a minute.

SayraT · 27/03/2015 08:12

Height: 5ft 7
Weight: 222lb/100kg/15st 12lb
Clothes size: 16-18

Do you weigh a lot more than you look?

flanjabelle · 27/03/2015 09:33

Sayra I look very similar to you and I'm 12 stone 2!! You carry your weight well!

SoonToBeMrsB · 27/03/2015 09:50

People are always surprised to hear how much I weigh. I'm a comfy size 16, 5' 4" and 14st 7lbs. I have massive norks and a small waist which makes me look nicely curvy when I stand face-on but sideways I'm a definite potato Blush
