OK, here we go ... a new thread for a new week. Big fat hairy line drawn underneath last week, and here's to a better week this week.

Hi. thanks.

I just feel really lousy about myself. In every other aspect of my life I am "successful" - lovely partner and gorgeous gorgeous son from previous relationship - thinking maybe time to get pregant again next year - good at job, academically always successful, lots of friends, lovely family. But I look in the mirror and loathe myself. I read that my recommended weight (for 5 foot 2) is eight and a half stone. I remember being eight and a half stone when I was in college at about nineteen or twenty. Now I am fourteen which in the BMI charts is CLINICALLY OBESE.
No doctor has ever suggested I lose weight - and I have been continually prescribed the pill (I've now given it up) - but I know I need to lose so much. I look vile, my clothes are all sort of Lycra marquee affairs, all black. yuck yuck yuck.

WigWamBam · 10/10/2006 21:00

I'm 43 and fat ... in fact, make that 43 and very fat

Thanks wickedwaterwitch! I have actually cracked a smile... most unusual as I languish in a pool of self pity here!

WigWamBam · 10/10/2006 21:03

OK, so let's find something positive. You're here and want to do something about it ... and that's a great start.

Success can't be measured by what you weigh, take stock of all the good things in your life that really make you a success. The weight is just the icing on the cake - although I know how depressing it can be, and how difficult it is to shift.

Sorry if this is a patronising question, but are you well informed on healthy eating? Or are you like me ... know it all but still can't knuckle down to it?

Hi NumberNineteen - welcome to MN and the BigMoFos. They/we are a lovely bunch (if I say so myself).

NumberNineteen · 10/10/2006 21:05

I do know about healthy eating. Unfortunately I am addicted to:
toast (white, cotton-wool bread)
butter
chocolate
red wine
cheese
all carbohydrates esp pasta, rice, spud

I do like salady things and veg but even when I go on a stint of very healthy eating I never lose more than a pound or two. I want to shock my family by looking sensational at Christmas. Perhaps I am unrealistic.

(oh, and apologies for the bloodthirsty name - it's for Halloweeen - I'm usually just JackieNo[smile)

NumberNineteen · 10/10/2006 21:06

Thanks Jacky. I'm so sorry about your head.

Whoops - double post. You see the lengths I'll go to to lose weight....

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 10/10/2006 21:17

Hello all,

Hope you're all ok been away a bit trying to sort ds & work out!
I weighed myself yesterday as was at the gym and the scales were there I have put on about 7lb so am trying to kickstart and get motivated again!
Oh well I think things are picking up been to the gym again tonight so just need to get back into that routine again! Here's to a new start!!

WideWebWitch · 10/10/2006 21:19

No19, I would like to look better by Christmas too, I know that if I even lose 3 stone I look ok, not great but perfectly passable.

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 10/10/2006 21:20

Good on you for getting to the gym Whoopsfallenoveragain - I weighed myself yesterday, and I've put on a bit too. Am hoping it might disappear by tomorrow afternoon if I'm a bit more disciplined, which I haven't really been until today.

WideWebWitch · 10/10/2006 21:20

Jackieno, btw, you really made me laugh on the other thread about your slippers!

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 10/10/2006 21:22

It's true though. I regularly have to fight the urge to walk off into the sunset. I don't think I'd get very far though.

NumberNineteen · 10/10/2006 21:27

Yes I suppose it's good to work towards a goal - and aim to buy a slinky new dress or something as a reward. Something to wear to the Christmas parties.

I have difficulty seeing myself in teh slinky dress though!

Do you think wickedwaterwitch it would be possible to lose say 2 stone in 2 months?

NumberNineteen · 10/10/2006 21:29

Do you know what is weird, I remember walking down the street and guys would look at me. At parties they would offer cigarettes, in bars they would fight their way up to buy me drinks. Now I am sort of invisible. I suppose it's not just being fatter but being older, more mumsy, generally less appealing! But it's heartening to know that you have that potential - like you saying 3 st less and you'd be ok. I'm sure you are lovely now 3st or no 3st.

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 10/10/2006 21:30

NumberNineteen, I suspect that having smaller goals might work better - someone on here was talking to her doctor about weight loss, and the doctor suggested that she should be aiming to lose 2 pounds a month - that was the best way to keep it off. I know it's natural to want an instant result, but if you lose it slowly, hopefully it's more likely to stay off. Work towards losing half stone at a time, maybe?

WideWebWitch · 10/10/2006 21:31

Yep, being fat def = invisible. Thank god dh fancies me! I think 2 stone by xmas is do able, what say you, experienced ladies on this thread?

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 10/10/2006 21:31

Oh yes - I can identify with the being invisible thing. Partly to do with the weight, and partly to do with being a mum, for me. And sometimes it's actually quite welcome, in a strange way, if I'm not feeling good about myself.

WideWebWitch · 10/10/2006 21:32

No19, I met now dh when I was 33, (slimmer than now but still with generous curves) so it is def poss to be your age and not invisible.

NumberNineteen · 10/10/2006 21:33

Jackie you have got a very good way of saying something quite dramatic in a kind way!! i.e. are you sadly insane to think you can lose 2st in 2 months you utter nutter?? I think the thing is that losing 2 pounds seems to pointless to me - if you are 8 stone and lose 2 pounds you might notice it. On me 2 pounds is not even a whole chin!! I do see though that what you say is sensible.

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 10/10/2006 21:36

NumberNineteen - I'm sure it's not impossible to lose 2 stone by Christmas - just that it might not be the best way. Since these threads started (ie 22 weeks), I've lost 2 stone (and I'm still half a stone heavier than you). But I'm really trying to look at it as a very long term project - I've always been overweight, since I was a teenager, and I'm happy to gradually lose weight, in the way that it went on. If it takes me 2 years, then so be it. But I know it's not like that for everyone.

WigWamBam · 10/10/2006 21:36

Ah, but 2lb + 2lb + 2lb starts to make it all worth while. Trying to lose it too quickly is a bad idea ... it's gone on over a long period of time so it's going to take a while to shift.

And actually, 2lb isn't pointless. Go and pick up a two pound bag of sugar, or two pounds of apples. It may not show on the hips very quickly but it's a fair weight.

NumberNineteen · 10/10/2006 21:36

Yes wickedwaterwitch and I was probably about 12st when I got together with my very dear and fancying me dp. If it weren't for that fact I think I would find it even harder. It's so nice to know that curves can be attractive - but my sneaky inner voice says if he fancies you now, what would it be like if you were 4 st lighter? Imagining skyrockets in the bedroom!!
