Anyone up for a post-natal weight loss support thread?

DC3 is now 6 weeks and I am 15kg heavier than I want to be (about 10kg higher than pre-pregnancy, when I was already a bit over my 'ideal' weight). For my health, and to get into my old clothes, I want to lose at least 10kg, preferably 15kg.

My plan is to vaguely follow Slimming World principles and aim to average at least 70,000 steps a week (10,000 a day, in line with recommendations). I also want to do it healthily and whilst avoiding emotional angst (no beating myself up that I'm naughty if one day I eat chocolate fudge cake, just careful eating overall).

Anyone want to join me? I've been promised one buddy already on another thread.

Monday morning it is then. will bring back happy memories of everyone stuffing their faces after weigh in at SW classes having skipped breakfast!
I borrowed the fitbit yesterday and clocked up 14000 steps in a pretty average day (2 school runs plus dog walk) so it's not my activity levels that are the problem! I feel a bit like the dopey tarts on Secret Eaters realising that you can't stuff your face with chocolate without consequences.... Have you heard Sarah Millican on the subject?

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 25/06/2014 09:24

14, 000 on an average day. Wow! I did 16, 000 yesterday but it won't be usual. My issue is that the school run and pre school run are long - doing it all on foot would be 4 + hours a day, which isn't really realistic. So I have to fit parts of it in when I can.

Doing ok on the food. The main things I am noticing are how often I finish of kid food I don't want and how mych I snack after they are in bed.

ps Didn't mean to sound like i wanted to dictate weigh in day for others. I am fine if you all do Sunday night. Smile

Adding myself for accountability. The babe is now 5 months old and the gut has got to go, I can hardly fit into any of my summer clothes. I think I've gained around 2 stone but would be happy if I lost enough to drop a dress size - my days of being a size 8 are probably over. I don't own any scales but I'd love to join anyway.

Monday morning is good for me

WhizzPopBang · 25/06/2014 16:55

Monday morning's good for me, think you weigh less in the morning?!

bakingtins · 26/06/2014 20:49

How is everyone getting on? I'm doing well during the day, planning meals and not felt hungry. Evenings are my downfall - we eat our dinner early evening with the children, then once they are in bed I roam the house snacking....
I don't tend to eat breakfast - too much chaos getting two kids dressed and the baby fed and out of the house for the school run, then when I get back baby wants another feed and I just grab a banana and a cup of tea. I am experimenting with having late evening porridge instead of cake/crisps/sweets/biscuits. Any other tips for avoiding the relaxation munchies?

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 26/06/2014 21:07

That is my issue too. In fact, I am eating Dairy Milk Blush.

My issues are

  • I have weird guilt about 'wasting' food, so I tend to finish things off when the children don't. I'm doing better at that. Assessing whether I actually want it or not.
  • I snack in the evenings, like you Baking. DH works away some nights, and then I find it easy not to. But he snacks in the evenings, and I inevitably join in.
  • If I do not plan, I eat waaay too much bread.

What I have noticed on breakfast is that, the less needs doing, the better I do. The first two days I soaked porridge oats in some milk overnight. Then in the morning throw in a handful of fruit (a banana, a handful of grapes, etc) and eat. Because I've made it already, I eat it. And it sets me off on a better foot than toast first thing, which I have realised does odd things to my appetite.

Evenings are my downfall too - tea about 6/7pm then I'm picking at chocolate, or massive bowls of cereal by 9pm. Wondering if getting some low cal hot chocolate to drink at that time may help curb the sugar cravings? Also doesn't help that my appetite is huge Sad

bakingtins · 27/06/2014 14:07

Urgh - late evening porridge a disaster! Baby very unsettled and screamy today. I have a horrible feeling she is going to turn out to be CMPI like my DS2. Dairy-free is great for weight loss, since it effectively rules out anything nice to eat, but a bit miserable for me.....

Cakeismymaster · 28/06/2014 19:04

Love the pedometer challenge, going to amazon myself one now Grin

mrsmugoo · 29/06/2014 03:43

I'd like to be in this!

I'm 15 weeks pp and EBF which has given me a wicked sweet tooth and appetite.

I need to lose somewhere in the region of 2 stone.

oliviap100 · 29/06/2014 09:00

Hello!

My DS is 6 weeks now and I need to do something about my sweet tooth, comfort eating and general scoffing! The batteries have gone in my scales so don't how bad things have really got.
I'm planning to join SW (a long term WW - but need a change). None of my clothes fit and I need to fix it!!
I have printed off the SW 7 day trial menu so will adapt it for this week, I'm then on hols for a week and will join online when I am back!

Good luck everyone! Grin

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 29/06/2014 09:52

Baby is nearly 12 weeks and EBF is giving me a huge appetite too! I'm staying away from the scales because I get obsessive and it tends to set me off on a binge. Likewise, I can't really forbid foods eg carbs without going a bit loopy (history of disordered eating). I think mindfulness is the best approach for me.

What has helped me so far:

  1. Underwear! I went to M&S and bought massive pants (their full briefs are 3 for 2). I thought they'd look awful, I actually look a million times better as they scoop up my saggy tummy and give a sleek, smooth shape. I didn't like the 'light control' ones as they were uncomfortable and created a roll of fat around the edges but the normal cotton ones are great.
  1. Bras! I got a proper fitted underwire bra from Bravissimo and converted it to a nursing bra using a kit from eBay. I went from a shapeless lump to an hourglass - big improvement!
  1. Clothes that fit: my summer clothes are too tight and maternity clothes made me depressed. I have been miserable searching for bf-friendly flattering things but have found the following quite good:

i. Fat Face maxi dresses over a nursing vest - I have a couple with a crossover front that can be pulled aside to feed. The dresses skim over the body and hide a multitude of sins.

ii. Dickins and Jones sale at HoF - I got the Floral Water dress (I think it's called) which is a knee-length wrap dress with a hidden button at the top making it perfect for bfing. Cap sleeves flatter bingo wings, draping at the front disguises a tummy, looks nice over navy leggings to hide legs if desired, pulls in at waist and is very roomy in the bust for giant norks. Also, it's reduced from £80 to £20!

I've ordered a wrap dress and shirt dress from Boden and hoping they are nice.

On the dieting front, I know I'd feel more energetic if I cut down on bread and got out more - but so tired from baby and toddler that I just want to curl up with tea and toast all the time! It's a vicious circle. Also, all trips out seem to take me via a Co-op where I inexplicably buy a Twirl.

Keep telling myself everything will be easier when the baby sleeps through... yaaawn...

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 29/06/2014 10:02

Jelly - I absolutely do not want this to be about disordered eating. I am a very committed feminist and have spent a lot of time trying to rid myself of the sort of feelings about myself that Daily Mail 'X pings back into shape 20 minutes after the baby' stories can induce. I want to feel positive about making good health choices.

For me, this is about not relying on bread or sugary snacks so much. Not because I need to feel guilt about them, but because they aren't the best way to feel energetic and get back to healthy BMI (my current one pitches me just into overweight).

DD2 didn't sleep through until she was two, I can't wait that long...

ps which fat face dress?

OP posts:
OrangeMochaFrappucino · 29/06/2014 10:20

That's exactly what I'm trying to do - be healthy and make good choices. Will look up the dress later!

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 29/06/2014 10:23

Thanks for the dress.

Good choices are just so hard when you're knackered and time pressed, aren't they? I have noticed that one of my big issues is around 5pm - exhausted, not yet time for dinner, too easy to reach for a sugar boost that I don't need and that, long term, just makes you feel worse.

Am I too late to join? My dc3 is 3 weeks old and my 'kind' dh and other dc's have commented on my big tummy so I need to do something quick! I haven't weighed myself but have definitely been eating a pack of biscuits every few days and as it's a week till my dc break up for holidays I need to have a good week to kick start the biscuit habit before they catch me munching!!

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 29/06/2014 10:40

Welcome!

A week, wow. Are you not in England, or are they at private schools? We have three weeks thankfully for me to get into the healthy eating habit.

Bugger, the dresses I got aren't on the website anymore - I bought them at the start of April. It looks like the Makita Floral maxi is the same style as the ones I bought but a different print, but I can't see the neckline properly on the website on my phone so can't tell for sure. Sorry.

It's the tiredness that gets me - but I know being active and not jumping on the sugar merry-go-round would make me LESS tired, if only I could get the energy in the first place! 5-6pm is definitely the worst and the baby and toddler both get cranky around this time too!

Cakeismymaster · 29/06/2014 15:46

Weekends are my down fall - I can be good and strict all week and lose a couple of lbs, then I manage to eat more in one day than I have done over the whole week!

Bumblebzz · 30/06/2014 07:06

Hello

Can I join you?
My ds is 3 weeks old today and EBF. I'm probably a bit unusual in that I am already at pre-preg weight (albeit with a very flabby tummy) due to having had gest diabetes and being on a strict diet whilst pregnant. However, I had the same with dd and ended up putting the weight on post-partum (I.e. now) due to ravenous hunger from EBF, exhaustion and the liberation from the strict diet. I wish/hope I could continue to follow the healthy eating habits of the diabetic diet as it was super healthy (low carb and no sugar). More importantly, as I am now at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in my lifetime, I really do need to stay healthy (but I can't seem to resist chocolate!). I think it's to early/extreme for me to do SW or WW or 5:2 etc, but as someone mentioned above, I do need "mindfulness" to stop the cycle of sugar craving and poor eating choices.
I'm also hoping to get some decent walking done, been on hold till now due to pp recovery/ stitches.
Any apps recommended to keep a general food/exercise diary? I think myfitnesspal is popular?
