New week new start...

That's a lovely website, Suejonez. Love the way you've got the metaphorical 'journey' set out (as well as the literal one). Warms the cockles of my heart

I have been off the wagon for the past few days - end of school hols tension - too much to do - too much aggro. Tonight I had one slice of dh's gluten-free cake, and fell to pondering why I always feel a compulsion to demolish the whole damn cake. Rather remarkably, I did stop at one slice, although eating that was like entering the gates of heaven. The kids are back at school tomorrow, so I should be able to climb back on the diet wagon. [Shall I give the rest of the cake to the birds???]

lemonaid · 04/09/2006 23:47

Have been in front of TV, but (huzzah!) not stuffing face. Britain's Next Top Model is my sole reality-TV fix and I think focuses on the fact that being thin and beautiful doesn't make you happy or nice. Hah!

suejoneziscalmernow · 04/09/2006 23:50

Always a pleasure to warm your cockles Fauve. I'm ridiculously plesed that people seem to like the site , made the extra effort worthwhile.

Could you freeze the cake? Always eat with a large cup of coffee by the way - I find the coffee fills me up and washes the lovely taste of cake out of my mouth to prevent the inevitable food frenzy!

Fauve · 04/09/2006 23:52

The coffee is a great idea, Suejonez. Had never thought of that. In theory the cake has to stay around for dh, but am sorely afraid it won't, hence the needy birds suggestion...

suejoneziscalmernow · 04/09/2006 23:57

can't dh eat frozen cake?

champs · 05/09/2006 00:17

hi all!! I have braved the scales and am shocked to find i am 2 stones lighter. I haven't really been dieting as such but have tried to cut my intake and keep to points in my head. I hope to start properly next week and do weight watchers properly. I need to loose 2 more to get to my 10%!!

lovely website sue!! I'll be keeping a look out for news.

Hi to everyone xxx

JackieNo · 05/09/2006 08:44

Wow - well done champs. That's brilliant!

justamum · 05/09/2006 10:04

I am a bad person! i just rang my old cm to cancel our contract & found out she is in hospital having a hernia operation! She did tell me the night she told me about the fees and i totally forgot. now i feel awful because i have to tell her soon because of 4 week notice periods etc and I can't afford for my 4 weeks to go into next month but you can't with any decency ring up someone who has just come out of hospital with news like this. My mum suggested writing a letter as it all has to be in writing anyway but that just feels like cowardice. What should I do?

JackieNo · 05/09/2006 10:11

Oh dear - that is difficult isn't it. You can't really write the letter and deliver it with a box of chocolates and a get well card! Or maybe if you could go round there, you could do both - give her chocs or a card, but also say that you needed to talk to her and give notice, and leave the letter? Or would that just be too embarrassing?

Fauve · 05/09/2006 15:30

Do a letter, justamum. Much the best IMO. Champs, how did you drop two stone without really noticing!!!!!!!!!! WEll done! I will ask Dh if he'll eat frozen cake, SJ. I see where you're coming from

Dottydot · 05/09/2006 15:39

Fauve - does your dh have coeliac disease? Only you mentioned gluten-free cake. I've just had the diagnosis and have to carry on eating gluten until my biopsy - probably in December - and then it's gluten-free for me too, so you'll have to let me know which cake it is and if it's any good (not that I should be eating any anyway..!).

I seem to changing shape slowly but surely - definitely a clothes size smaller now and the 1 lovely dress I've still got in my wardrobe from my smaller (size 16!!!) days is almost within reach - about another month hopefully and I'll be in it again. Haven't been able to wear it for 7 years!!

Fauve · 05/09/2006 16:45

Yes, he does, Dottydot, and there are some gorgeous cake recipes out there which I'll be pleased to pass on. Instead of gluten however they contain about a trillion calories per crumb. Generally however a Gillian McKeith (grrr) type diet is fairly gluten free. Good luck with the biopsy, dh felt a great deal better after diagnosis and is prepared to do Stuff Round the House now with his newly acquired energy

Dottydot · 05/09/2006 18:11

Must admit I'm not looking forward to the change in eating - and would love any recipes you have (for special occasions only, naturally..!). My e-mail address is: lakinson.house at ntlworld dot com. Thanks!

MrsJohnCusack · 05/09/2006 20:02

and well don3e eveyrone else on the weight losses. I am eating LIncolnshire this week and have just had the Worst PHotos ever (TM) taken of me today by a phototgrapher the outlaws hired to come round and take posed photos of us all today. GRIM

JackieNo · 05/09/2006 20:24

Oh MrsJC - all the best for the trip (and for surviving the time inbetween). Will be thinking of you on the 19th too.

suejoneziscalmernow · 05/09/2006 22:21

hello all and Mrs JC - won;t see you at the airport (though you're probably off the compueter by now) as my travel dates have been put back a week to 26th Sept, so am beginning to breathe a bit easier as I now have 3 weeks to get stuff sorted.

Have been manically busy in work, lurching from one meeting to the next so haven't been on here much. Just what i need at the moment - a three year strategic review in work to be presented to the board in two weeks!

I have no idea whats happening to my weight - not doing any exercise as working late but also not eating as much as no time. Who knows where that balances out? Didn't have a great weekend but that may have evened out in the last few days.

suejoneziscalmernow · 06/09/2006 13:38

scales in boots not working so will have to weigh at Boots near home later - but will have eaten lunch by then (rats!)

JackieNo · 06/09/2006 13:39

You're having rats for lunch? Should be fairly low calorie, though.

Fauve · 06/09/2006 15:13

Dottydot, here's Nigella's clementine cake . It's bliss, but laden with calories. I've gained a pound this week partly due to indulgence in gluten free cake - so don't click on the link unless you must, the rest of you! I'll just post one more evil recipe for Dottydot - I don't know how to do links in emails, so have to post here. Look away, look away.

Fauve · 06/09/2006 15:17

Here's a Green and Blacks chocolate cake recipe which is gluten free. You can find lots of other gluten free recipes on the Allergies threads, Dottydot - you'll have to nip over there if you find you are coeliac

JackieNo · 06/09/2006 15:25

Fauve - you are wicked. You know we can't resist clicking on such delicious looking links.

Well - just weighed, and I've stayed the same. Lucky not to have put on, frankly, as I've been very snackish in the evenings with DH away.

suejoneziscalmernow · 06/09/2006 18:02

and the damn scales at Boots near home aren't working either - its a plot I tell you. So am going to assume I stayed the same as thats what my scales at home vaguesly tell me.

Had my medical for the adoption updated today and I was discussing the weight issues with the doctor in passing.

He said something interesting that we could all learn from but will find difficult to accept... he says you should aim for a weight loss of 2lb PER MONTH if you are clinically obese. make it part of your life, give yourself more treats, lose less but be on it for years. He says its much healthier to lose weight that slowly and its proven that people who lose weight that slowly are far less likely to put it on again as they have spent years getting used to a different way of eating. He says he actively disapproves of people losing 2lb per week on the whole (obviously occasionnally is fine in the same way as putting on occasionally is fine).

So thats what I'm going to condition myself to be happy with - 2lb per month. I'm going to put my weight on a spreadsheet and graph it and plot 2lb per month and keep an eye on that as a monthly target.

I was really surprised - somehow always thought GP would disaprove of not losing at least a pound a week - feel like I have "permission" to lose very slowly but steadily.

suejoneziscalmernow · 06/09/2006 18:03

oh and I didn't click on either of those evil links [virtuous emoticon]

flutterbee · 06/09/2006 18:11

That is really interesting Sue, I am however going to stick to trying to loose an average of 1-2lb a week only because if I don't see results I will become unmotivated and just start eating crap again, for instance I have a personal goal of 2 stone off by Christmas but if I lost 2lb a month including the last months dieting and December I would have only lost 10lb and I would just get fed up.

It is also said that a monthly weigh in is the best for you as it gives the most accurate weight loss but again I would get unmotivated if I did'nt check myself each week.

Anyway I have weighed and sent my email and I am happy to say after all my moaning and panicing and asking to be kicked up the backside I have actually lost 3lb

suejoneziscalmernow · 06/09/2006 18:19

No I'm not planning a monthly weigh in - that would still be prone to error, eg water retention, what you'd eaten the day before etc, so will still weigh weekly, but I will TRY to look at my weight on a monthly basis and not get so concerned with an individual week. Also I am trying to get into the mind set that 2lb per month is good. Of course we all want to see results quicker but of you're one the larger ladies (can't remember) realistically you're unlikely to the maintain the pace you've set for the next two years and the risk is that when you can't, you go off the rails and put back on what you've lost.

Nothing wrong with short term targets to keep you interested, but I'm trying to find an approach I can live with and is acheivable. I just found his views interesting because they are at odds with the usual 1-2 lbs per week.
