Atkins/Low Carb/High Protein - Anyone doing it?

FrogBellyRatBone · 29/08/2006 16:57

Lost 2st on Atkins but have since veered more to GL type diets. Unfortuntely don't seem to be able to stick to them like I could with Atkins.Still want to lose 3 stone (have put back on nearly a stone of the weight I lost) and am debating whether to go back on Atkins. Any opinions welcomed

Monkey I'm picturing broccoli coated in cheese LOL

50kg? to which hight?

joelallie · 14/09/2006 18:23

Holidays - I stick to the same basic rules. No sweet stuff so NO BAKLAVA!!! Avoid the obvious things like bread and chips. But don't sweat the little stuff - try stick to salad and meat or fish-based stuff where possible and don't worry too much about it otherwise.

monkey · 14/09/2006 18:30

5'2" on a good day with wind in my hair

MrsBigD · 14/09/2006 18:34

don't like Baklava anyhow, too sweet even for my chocoholic tastebuds . Guessing yoghurt is o.k.? Doesn't seem to feature at all in my plan...

Monkey ok for that height I think 50kg is the ideal weight isn't it. Like 55kg for me at an approx 5'4" (1.63m). How much further to go?

monkey · 14/09/2006 18:40

long way. am 57 and not moving an inch, or should that be a gramm? what are you at

MrsBigD · 14/09/2006 18:52

was 66.4 with 34% bodyfat (mean cales) on Sunday and 64.2 today with 33% bodyfat and that in a week where I haven't been to the gym thanks to reaction to antibiotics! So really impressed with Atkins at least for a short stint hoping that after induction phase the menue gets a bit more exciting

joelallie · 15/09/2006 11:17

MrsBigD - yep yoghurt is OK. If you are following an induction period then it won't mention yoghurt as it does have carbs - but it would be criminal to try to stick to induction levels on holiday...d'you hear CRIMINAL!!! Greek yoghurt is the lowest carb yoghurt generally as it has the highest fat content. But try not to eat it with honey. In the UK you should always check the carb content on the pack and don't go mad with it.

Grilled fish, grilled lamb, moussaka (OK it will have some flour but not too bad), kleftika, that youghurty thing with mint. Loads of stuff to eat.

MrsBigD · 15/09/2006 11:19

thanks JA but doesn't Moussaka have potatoes in it?

Yoghurt yummy

joelallie · 15/09/2006 11:29

Well that depends - some does some doesn't. My friend who's family lives in Crete doesn't put it in but I have a recipe that includes it. So I guess it depends. However it's mostly meat and aubergine so not toooo bad.

MrsBigD · 15/09/2006 11:34

thankfully my 'induction' will nearly be over when I'm flying out, and if I fall of the Atkins wagon I can always climb back on . DH is now considering it as well at least for the induction phase as he's plateauing a bit despite working out like a looney! Though I keep telling him... muscle heavier than fat, which he knows, but of course still doesn't like what the scales are showing...

nolastar · 15/09/2006 12:53

Hi, I am new to mumsnet but have been reading your thread daily..this is my fouth day on the Atkins the headaches have gone.but am struggling to find things to take to work and eat..thank god no one can see me..cos Ive been spreading pate into little gem lettuce leaves and eating brie by the forkfull..tea last night was cauliflower cheese and fresh tuna, (night before..c.cheese n chicken) ..I can feel my love affair with c.cheese coming to an untimely end..I could do with some ideas from someone who's got some imagination in the kitchen..BTW JUST how bad is dark chocolate?

joelallie · 15/09/2006 12:59

Finely slice some white and green cabbage, add garlic and onion, plus a some of the tiny florets of cauliflower. Add chillies too if you like things hot. Stir fry the lot in olive oil. Walnuts are also nice added. Salad with mayo? Just plain veg with a little butter?

joelallie · 15/09/2006 13:01

Dark chocolate isn't too bad - as long as you buy the 70% plus stuff. But not yet I would suggest. After a few weeks. It will get easier honest . It seems weird and v restrictive at first but you'll get used to it. You just have to think outside the box.

nolastar · 15/09/2006 13:14

Thanks,I did see someone mention moussaka made with aubergines as the layers and meat..sounds like it could be yummy..my breath hasn't started smelling yet..Im dissapointed!

joelallie · 15/09/2006 13:17

Nolastar - if you're drinking enough water you won't get the smelly breath.

nolastar · 15/09/2006 13:23

Sorry joelallie,
that was u with the moussaka recipe..have been on so many sites looking for tips I forget where I am! I am also trying to repair a vintage evening dress at the same time..one hundred or more sequins to put back on..one of those anal tasks that are strangly enjoyable.lol

MrsBigD · 15/09/2006 13:37

nolastar I'm actually using ediets to get a menue plan and as one can substitute meals for others on the list it's quite alright. My lunch today is roast beef, cucumber, celery, tomatoe, cream cheese and raddish, all mixed together. Looks revolting but tasts lovely and even though the portion isn't all that big it's very filling

BTW very proud of myself... dh brought out a box of Fair Trade Chocolates (you know the really fattening praline type) and up till now I could NEVER resist and most defo not stop after one... last night I had... NONE. Didn't feel like chocolate! I must be ill!!!

nolastar · 15/09/2006 13:50

ooh that was positively saintly..I 'm prob not being as strict as I should I had 2 dark truffles last night while I wastched that scottish murder programme..better than the half bottle of red it usually is was my reasoning..stupid heh? Do NOT know how I am going to resist a glass of red wine this eve..had huge argument with teenage son this mo about why it would be a good idea to put his school swimming stuff in a plastic bag instead of stuffed in with his books..youd think id asked him to take a frickin cabbage to school.

MrsBigD · 15/09/2006 14:14

nolastar I think alcoholis better than sugar

As for teenager and soggy books... his problem and you will be buying new ones with HIS allowance

nolastar · 15/09/2006 19:43

MMMmmm delicious..the nearest I have come to a normal meal! thanks xx

emotionalwreck · 16/09/2006 21:20

Where's everyone gone? Hope you're not all being naughty!

I mean, you'd never catch me on a Saturday night on my second glass of red wine [hic!]

However, have had a beautiful dinner of homemade chilli burgers with a leafy salad! Over did it at the gym on Thursday too - am having difficulty raising my glass to my lips as both biceps are agony. Anybody there to save me from drinking a third glass??????

MrsBigD · 18/09/2006 09:21

Sorry wasn't around much, ds was poorly with a fever.

Had debauched night out on Friday but been relatively 'good' since then. Not daring stepping on scales though. Funny thing is dh is sort of following the diet as well as he doesn't want to inflict his munching on delicious garlic bread etc upon me

emotionalwreck · 18/09/2006 19:58

MrsBigD - sounds like you've got a good un there! Mine bought a white chocolate and rasberry cheese cake from Sainsbury's in support of my dieting efforts! He said it would test my committment to losing weight! I'm finding its testing not smacking him in the chops!

Anyway, I ended up having four glasses of red wine and making myself ill all day on Sunday! Feeling a difference in my waist line though this week - hoping the scales will come up trumps on Wed (what kind of a phrase is that anyway?)

brimfull · 18/09/2006 20:14

Hi,Can I join in.I've just started a low carb diet as described in a book called "8 week cholesterol cure"It is similar to atkins(which I did about 5 yrs ago) except the carb limit is 40gms/day and it is fairly low fat.
I am on day 3 now and the headaches have gone ,but I have got some aching muscles,do you think this could be potassium depletion?
Also any ideas for a nice breakfast besides eggs?

emotionalwreck · 18/09/2006 21:03

Difficult as you're doing the low fat low carb - I would have suggested some cold meats and cheese.... lovely and continental!

And I know its with eggs, but what about some scrambled eggs with smoked salmon? Or a mushroom omlette? God, I can't think of anything without eggs now!!!
