Atkins/Low Carb/High Protein - Anyone doing it?

FrogBellyRatBone · 29/08/2006 16:57

Lost 2st on Atkins but have since veered more to GL type diets. Unfortuntely don't seem to be able to stick to them like I could with Atkins.Still want to lose 3 stone (have put back on nearly a stone of the weight I lost) and am debating whether to go back on Atkins. Any opinions welcomed

However I just have to tell you all that I've lost a stone since I started. Weighed myself on my mum's dodgy scales before I started and again last night. I stone down! They always weigh you 6 lbs or so under but at least they are consistently wrong

Not going to take it as a hint that eating half a tonne of home-made wholemeal bread with butter over the weekend is really a good idea though .

Crotchety · 12/10/2006 10:52

A stone!! Brilliant! How long did that take then?
Proper induction...ooh...erm...er...But you've just told me how to make those almond things! No alcohol? Not even gin? Harrumph.

Just to deviate from the issue of whether to sign up to proper induction for a mo, when I was doing Atkins properly a couple of years ago and got stuck on various plateaus (plateaux?) I was advised that having a bit of a carb binge for a day and then going back to low carb would kick-start it all again, and that did seem to work. I'm only talking about a bowl of porridge ideally, but maybe these odd lapses aren't the end of the world if they are really infrequent! It's just having to put up with the reappearance of the hunger pangs as a result. Now back to induction...um...er...ooh...

joelallie · 12/10/2006 11:02

No the plateaux are really common. They can go on for months. However you need to be sure that they really are plateaux - are you losing inches instead. Often the weight comes off followed later by inch loss (or cm loss if you are metric ) But giving yourself a quick burst of carbs isn't the same as constantly eating a bit too much all the time for weeks on end (which I'm guilty of).

Errr....sorry about the almond things. Best left until after induction of course. But if you are happy with things as they are I wouldn't bother.

It took me since the end of august to lose this much. So not quick but as I don't rely on scales most of the time it's OK for me

CristinaTheAstonishing · 12/10/2006 13:58

Do you lose weight during the induction, or just to get your body up to speed to then start losing weight?

joelallie · 12/10/2006 14:08

Most people lose most weight during induction. I lost 9lbs first time round. The weight loss slows to a much more sensible 1-2lbs a week once you start to up the carb levels. However there are always people who don't lose as much. It depends on how strict you are and other factors like how much you have to lose, TOM etc. Once you are near your target weight you can start to increase carbs again until you are eating just about what most people would see as a normal healthy diet - lower in fat and higher in complex carbs. but always watching what you eat.

Joelallie - I worship you. Perhaps you will be the saviour of us all with your encouragement to do a strict induction. I'm all for it! All for one and one for all! Anyone for a G & T??!!

Ahem, I have been an exercise queen today and participated in one hell of a session with my lovely personal trainer - he is called Shorn - no really, thats how he spells it. He is one serious specimen of eye candy but he works me like an absolute bast**d. Think I should be measuring my inches instead of just going on what the scales say as I know I've really increased my fitness in the last two months.

And Joelallie - you must be chuffed with your progress. I personally would like to see a menu of what you eat for an average day.

MoonFrog · 12/10/2006 21:45

Hello

Well done Joelallie. Bad luck Emotional.

I'm with you. I'll start induction again. When are we starting ??

emotionalwreck · 12/10/2006 22:14

Suggestion for thread title - My arse is bigger than you arse

Or

I can eat more than you and still lose weightOrHow many diets have you done today?

or quite simply

Carboholics Anonymous

emotionalwreck · 12/10/2006 22:15

Can you tell by my typos that I too, may be indulging in my last glass of red wine for some time?

joelallie · 13/10/2006 10:10

Emotional - I like 'How many diets have you done today' personally . Might get a few low-fat dieters on board before they realise....

Thanks everyone! Have to admit to be ever so chuffed inspite of my intention to forswear the evil scales for ever.

moonfrog - I know that coffee can be a problem for some people but not for everyone. I used to use decaff religiously and still do sometimes but when I'm at work I use ordinary and over the weekend I indulge in a whole cafetiere of the full-fat stuff all by myself.... no-one else likes it so what else can I do.

Menu for today - Breakfast -2 large glasses of water (about 2/3 l) 3 rashers of back bacon, half a tomato, 2 small mushrooms - grilled. Mug of tea with a drop of milk.
Lunch - salad - mostly mixed leaves with some red onion, cucumber, feta and ham. Oil and vinegar dressing.
Dinner - ????? Gawd knows. Last night it was Sainsbury Taste the difference chipolatas with roasted veg. If I was being strict I'd have had them with green salad and mayo.
Snacks - cheese and some walnuts. ANother 2+l of water. Coffee with milk or cream.

Shall we start on Monday? That will allow my to have a few more glasses of wine... . Also have to admit that I've been known to knock back a G&T even on induction but I won't this time. Solidarity and all that....

I think that a new thread would be a good idea too.

Joelallie, Monday is fine for me. Gives me chance to use up my wine over the weekend I too have been known to indulge in the odd g&t on induction but will also forgo the pleasure in the name of solidarity.
While I think of it, Splenda is available in most supermarkets; Morrisons, Tesco and Asda all definately sell it, either in tablet form or in a jar for sprinkling/using in cooking. I've been using it since Jan - I don't do sugar anymore - and find it's not as chemical tasting/bitter as other sweeteners.

Emotional, my votes are with "How many diets have you done today ?" or "Carboholics Anonymous".
Perhaps we could start a new thread every month ie. Carboholics Anonymous October etc

bloodcurdlingstrawb, will you be joining us ?

I did actually start today - 1 scrambled egg, thin pork chop and 1oz cheese for breakfast, lunch was tinned salmon with 3/4 cup lettuce, and 1/4 cup cucumber and mayo, and tea was going to be fillet steak with purple sprouting brocolli and courgettes. I was going to cook lamb pasta bake w/ garlic bread for dh and dd. But hey, I wouldn't want to be getting an unfair advantage if everyone else is starting on Monday so under great duress, and for the sake of comradeship I'll eat what dh and dd are eating

Hi ggirl here,I'm still doing the clark plan and have now lost a stone!!
I can't believe I'm finally losing weight and I'm finding it easy.
Actually bought a pair of size 16 jeans from matalan (hey I know there sizes are probably huge but the number is important)

Anyway good luck on the induction from monday girls.

ps. I'm still having a gin and slimline every night but staying away from wine as I can't stop at one.

It's a bit like the atkins but allows veg,so low carb ,no rice/potatoes/bread/pasta,minimal fruit during weight loss.
actually that;s a lie I'm allowed one slice of bread a day, which I have at breakfast.

It's taken me just under a month to lose a stone.

I have another 3 stone to go unfortunately.
There is a thread about xenical if you look in the slimming section.

Emotional, Joelallie, and anyone else wanting to join in, are we still on for tomorrow ??
x

emotionalwreck · 15/10/2006 13:13

Absolutely - count me in. I'm visiting friends this afternoon and they are cooking Sunday dinner. So, it will be my "last supper" - may indulge in a few potatoes but have banished all alcohol from the house (apart from lager as I don't drink it!)

So shall we start a new thread in honour of our new efforts?

emotionalwreck · 15/10/2006 13:17

BTW bloodcurdlingstrawb - you can only take xenical on a low fat diet. Believe it or not I was a research nurse on the trials for xenical - it does work but if you cheat and eat more fat than allowed you can have a nasty accident involving your bottom - if you catch my drift. If you can try to stick to just changing your diet and increasing your exercise I'd steer clear of any medications xxx

MoonFrog · 15/10/2006 21:27

Today I have mostly been eating carbs.

Right, that's me full to the brim - Roast potatoes, roast parsnips, parsnip and potato mash and sage and onion stuffing (with roast chicken, cabbage, carrots, broad beans, and assorted other beans from the garden)and I'm now partaking of a cheeky little merlot

I'm all fired up now, ready to start induction again tomorrow, although tbh I'm dreading weighing myself .

If it's okay with everyone I'll start a new thread in the morning and put a link to it on here.

Cheers, and good luck
