Lost 2st on Atkins but have since veered more to GL type diets. Unfortuntely don't seem to be able to stick to them like I could with Atkins.Still want to lose 3 stone (have put back on nearly a stone of the weight I lost) and am debating whether to go back on Atkins. Any opinions welcomed

well so far so good. not one carb yet. walked to and from the park about 20 minutes in total.have booked to heavy classes at the gym tonight and tomorrow. i find i am much more energetic without the carbs, but i do crave them.

FrogBellyRatBone · 04/09/2006 20:40

Evening all. Been/am having major probs with my phone line so will post quickly before it disconnects itself again - engineer coming Wed so hopefully will be sorted then (although sorted still only means a connection speed of between 4 and 26kbps - it would almost be quicker sending you all a letter ).
Thread got somewhat hijacked for a while there didn't it?
Agree NappiesGalore, although I prefer GL to GI.
Hi franyfroo. Glad you can join us I hope you are eating some carbs and not cutting them out completely (although you do know that most sausages contain quite a few carbs don't you ?). I try to get most of my carb allowance from veg for the vitamins/minerals and roughage.Really loving watercress at moment.
Right, I'm gonna have to go. Connection has failed 6 times just while I've been typing this. Good luck to everyone and keep up the good work.Speak to you all soon

Sausages! I consider myself an expert on lc sausages . The best are Sainsbury's posh ones - the ultimate chipolatas I think they are called. .2g per 100g or something like that so very low. Otherwise I agree with Frog that sausages are to be avoided.

FF - I second what Frog said re carbs. You should be eating some. Atkins says 20g but I've done a carb fast that was as low as 5g (but only for 3 days at a time)...but you do need to eat some carbs.

franyfroo · 05/09/2006 13:23

dont panik. they were lc sausages and only use them for convenience. tend to save most carbs for the evening, worked before. did 2 very long and hard classes at the gym last night and am booked for two more tonight. plus had the long walks again. will weigh friday night, and hopefully that will motivate me for the weekend.

Hi All,

Have to say I was p*ed off with all that herbalife stuff. The thread is about low carb diets and not about taking supplements that claim to aid weight loss, so why did she bring it up in the first place if she didn't want to hijack the thread? Anyway.....

Joelallie, we test for ketones in diabetic patients as it is a serious clinical indicator in diabetics with a high blood sugar - it can indicate that they are becoming acidotic, which in laymans terms means a coma is a coming! The only other reasons for ketones being in the urine is because of fasting, vomitting and diarrhoea and acute stress on the body .... e.g. labour! Or a low carb diet! As far as I'm aware its not possible to produce ketones from deitary fat as it a byproduct of mobilising stored fat. But enough of the anatomy and physiology.....

I seriously messed up yesterday and had a bag of chips from the chippy. Nightmare night with little one teething, followed by no breakfast, no lunch whilst at work, then when I returned home had to rush round like a lunatic to help get my partner to the airport on time. This involved him visiting the chippy, and I know its no excuse but I cracked and had to have something right then!

But lessons learned - must take food to work and organise myself much better. Roast pork and vegetables tonight though and I'm back on track today!

On the subject of sausages, Asda used to do some paprika/hungarian ones that were about 0.5g per sausage! Not sure if they still do them as I haven't shopped there for a while.

Hi there

Seems like confession time - I had pizza last night (was thin crust though!). Just had no food in the house and no opportunity to go out for anything more suitable and it was calling to me from the freezer...how pathetic of me !

Last time I did lc, before I had ds, I found it easy and didn't have cravings, but this time I seem to be finding it much harder, not sure why. Also finding motivation to exercise very hard - I enjoy walking and do this a lot, but it's not enough for me to burn any fat. It's also hard to fit it in with working, looking after my ds etc etc.

Big whinge over, sorry!

FrogBellyRatBone · 06/09/2006 14:29

Hi everyone

The nice BT man has fixed my problem and I'm back in virtual world again
Well, if we're all confessing our sins here's mine. It's not that I've eaten carbs but I have just eaten a whole 80g bag of Pork Scratchings containing a whalloping 462 cals all in one go and.... when I go to collect dd from school I'm going to treat myself to a small bottle of vodka to go with some diet pepsi tonight. Infact the pork scratchings are becoming a bit of a bad habit, I know they contain only traces of carbohydrate, but they are very fatty and salty. Will drink extra water have a big salad tonight to atone.

i cheated last night, had wine........but neeeeeeeeeeeeded it.

walked loads today and yesterday and did another class at the gym tonight so hoping im ok still.

going to go and drink more water now and not alot else to eat till i shop.

emotionalwreck · 06/09/2006 20:23

Ok - think we all feel better for that! Its my weekly weigh in day today, so..... .........................

In week one I've lost 4lb! So despite the bag of chips I have triumphed and said goodbye to 15st and have pleasure in seeing a 14 now instead.

So if everyone else is having a drink .... I'm having a gin and slimline tonic to celebrate!

FrogBellyRatBone · 06/09/2006 20:35

Congrats on breaking the 15 barrier !!

How many did you end up having Frog? Don't you find you srart craving carbs when you drink? I was eyeing up the loaf last night like it was an unopened christmas present! I didn't succumb though!

joelallie · 08/09/2006 12:52

Well done EW! That must feel great.

I think I'm doing OK but as I'm not weighing I can't tell. My low-rise jeans do seem to have less of a love-handle over the top . Might be my imagination though But I am being strict and eating a fraction of what I was a few weeks ago although (if I was bothered about calories I guess the calorie count is quite high). Loads of water. No booze since Saturday (some friends came over for a meal so that's my excuse!) which is quite an acheivement for me. Going to enjoy a few glasses of white this evening with my spicy fish stew....

monkey · 08/09/2006 13:46

hi all, can I join? I started Atkins a couple of months ago. Have lost about a stone. am nearly at target weight. Have maybe 4 pounds left to loose. for some reason tho I seem to bestuck in (on?) a plateau. well, more that I'm slowly creeping back up,, well only a pound so far, but def. In the wrong direction. don't know why. haven't so much as sniffed a starchy carb for weeks.

are you 'meeting' regularly, weighing in? sorry, eyes really sore now and can't read through

FrogBellyRatBone · 08/09/2006 14:53

Hello Monkey, 'course you can join us. We've not got a set "meeting" time/day and you only weigh in if and when you want to. Joelallie isn't weighing at all just doing measurements. At the moment Emotionalwreck is weighing in on a Wed and I'm doing it on a Friday ( posting gives me motivation )
Well here goes....... after 1st week (this time around) on induction, I weigh in at..... 12st 6lbs - giving me a loss of 7lbs! Think I'll carry on with the pork scratchings after all.
Emotional wreck, in answer to your vodka questions 1. tooooo many 2. Not really anymore. I do a deal with myself. Usually if I'm not drinking I'll have a snack in the evenings, 1oz really strong cheese (it lasts ages cut into tiny pieces, and then I suck it like a sweet), or some pork scratchings, accompanied by copious amounts of tea with sweetener and soya milk. If I'm having a drink I see that as my "treat", instead of a snack. It's just a matter of habit I think. Can take or leave bread really, potatoes are my downfall. Also fruit and veg - we've got a garden full of potatoes, broad beans, peas, rasps, carrots, strawbs, runner beans etc etc (drool emoticon) and it is killing me having to pick and prepare them for dd and dh, but not being able to have any myself
Righty ho, off to pick up dd from school.
Take care x

FrogBellyRatBone · 08/09/2006 14:55

Gaaah. Just realised 13st 1lb minus 12st 6lb actually gives me a loss of 9lbs!!! Hurrah !

what does TOM mean??

I have turned to peanuts. thought they were ok, but it's all I can guess. And def not drinking enough water, thanks for reminder. Have been downing tea so much recently makes my mil look like a novice. Is tea bad?

9llbs. In 1 week??? Thabnt's amazing. is it rude to ask if you have a lot to loose? The best I ever managed was 1.5 llbs. It just doesn't seem to want to come off me lol.

My dh has tolerated this d'iet' (I see it as more of a permanent thing) I'm not that bothered about bread/potatoes whatever & haven't missed, but he's starting to nag me to reintrodice these things. as I still want to loose I don't want to do this. Actually, I keep wanting to get him to do it too, he could def do with loosing more than a few pounds. He's so stubborn tho if I so much as mentioned it it would guarantee he'd never do it.

Are your dhs being supportive?

Did measure ages ago, so know I lost lots of cms, but not on like a weekly basis.

willb e good to get encouragement & maybe more ideas to kick start. I would so love to get to my target weight it's really frustrating to get close & start going backwards. especially as I've not indulged.

My favourite thing about Atkins is I no longer have a sweet tooth, which has changed my life, and much reduced appetite. You all found that?

joelallie · 08/09/2006 17:45

Yes definitly a reduced appetite. It's the very best thing about it for me. I always used to eat mountains of food when I was eating a normal diet now I serve myself less than DH and usually only eat half of it.

Tea's fine as long as there isn't too much milk (milk is high in carbs surprisingly).

Water is really important. I usually try for 3 litres a day.

Peanuts are a problem for me as I can't eat them moderately. Pub-sized bags are OK but not if, like me, you buy a 200g bag to take home and eat it in 2 days!! BTW Sainsburys and Co-op own-label peanuts are the lowest carb count I've found.

TOM is time of the month.

monkey · 08/09/2006 19:08

wow thanks for that detailed response. hmm yes you hit the nail ont the head witht he large bag of nuts eaten over a couple of days. Just checked tho. oh dear, my bag was 500g. that's bad isn't it?

will work hard on the water. was drinking loads before, but gradually seemed to reduce water & up tea. Probably drinking about 6 litres of tea a day. or 10.

just had lots of fish for tea, no tea tea and no peanuts.

FrogBellyRatBone · 08/09/2006 20:50

Monkey. 9lbs is a lot but most of it is water. When I first did Atkins back in Jan I lost 10lbs on my first week, 4lbs 2nd week, 4lbs 3rd week....... then stalled for about 3 months
How many carbs do you try to stick to? I'm going to carry on with induction at around 20g until I've lost about another stone and a half/two stone. I want to get down to around ten, to ten and a half but am not getting too hung up on actual weight, more body shape.
I agree with joelallie, watch the milk. Full cream is better than skimmed/semi-skimmed. I switched to soya milk as it's much lower carb. I too try for 3litres water a day, in addition to anything else I drink. Dh is supportive but I usually cook separately for him and dd;tonight they had scampi, chips and veg, I had 2 lamb chops and broccoli and leeks with lemon juice and mayonnaise. If I'm doing a full roast they get the works, I get the meat/chicken with (usually) broccoli and leeks/courgette. I always get the crispy chicken skin though I too tend to avoid nuts as a few is never enough. I keep macadamia nuts in for when I can't resist, and have about 6-7.
Must start doing some excercise though.

FrogBellyRatBone · 08/09/2006 20:55

ps. thanks joelallie.
I think it's easy to get hung up on weight when measurement gives a much better reflection. I found measurements went consistently down (or stayed static) whereas weight can fluctuate by pounds each day. Stick with it
