How much do I need to lose to be a size 14? Plus fitness DVD recommendation?

Very overweight, very unfit etc etc. But time for action! I am 5ft 6in and would like to be a dress size 14. May I ask you if you are this height and dress size, how much you weigh? This will help me know how much I should aim to lose! Also, please could someone recommend a good fitness DVD for someone who is a fitness DVD virgin! I think something like the Shred might be too much for a first-timer! TIA

I am 5ft 4.5 and am around 13 stone in a size 14. I've just got down to a 12.

Have you thought about couch to 5k instead of a fitness DVD?

partystress · 17/08/2013 19:14

5'6.5" and am a 14 when I am between 11 and 12 stone.

gruber · 17/08/2013 19:16

I am 5'6 and just losing the pregnancy weight! I would say 12.5-13 stone to comfortably be a 14. Over about 13 st is into size 16 for me :(

All the best- you can do it! (Nearly under 14 stone now for me, was 16.5 after giving birth & DS 6 months so it can be done!)

nulgirl · 17/08/2013 19:21

Having lost almost 5 stone to get down to 10st and a size 10/12 I am currently back at 11st and a 12/14 following a greedy summer. Like partystress, I think I'm a 14 at between 11 and 12 stone

nulgirl · 17/08/2013 19:23

I also think it depends what kind of size 14 you want to be. An M&S 14 is way bigger than a Ted Baker 14.

TweenageAngst · 17/08/2013 19:24

I am the same as partystress. IMO sizing can be so body shape dependent.
I would recommend the couch to 5km running programme.

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin · 17/08/2013 19:26

Hello. I'm 5'6. I was 11.7 stone at a size 14.

I'm now 9.7 stone and a size 10.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 17/08/2013 19:27

I'm 5ft6 and 11 stone. I'm a 14 most places sometimes a 12 on top.

If you do no exercise currently I'd recommend getting yourself a pedometer, I have a dinky omron one, and aiming for a target of 10,000 steps a day. Amazing how many steps you can accumulate just by walking a little extra and visiting people on the next floor at work rather than emailing. Also means it fits into your life easily rather than an extensive exercise regime.

nextphase · 17/08/2013 19:41

5'6, and a size 14 at 84kg. Infact I think these boden trousers I'm wearing are a 12, but suspect they are very generous!
If you want to try couch to 5k, there are several threads running - for ladies a few weeks in, and www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1805926-Couch-to-5k-We-do-run-run-run-we-do-run-run?msgid=40968581 for some of us nearly finished.

The weight you need to be will also depend on how much muscle you have - a kg of muscle takes up less space than a kg of fat!

MamOfTwo · 17/08/2013 20:58

Thanks for the replies. Definitely have a better idea of my goal weight now. I don't think I can do couch to 5km at the moment (have pre-schooler and, er, hate running!) but like the pedometer idea. Well done on all those losses - fantastic. Am inspired! Will start on Monday. just finishing off wine and dessert Blush

I'm 5'6 and weigh 12st 3.5lb and am a mid size 14. To be able to fit into a H&M 14 I need to be about 11 st 10.

I'm doing slimming world and have lost almost 2 stone (aiming for my 2 stone award this week if I can dodge the biscuit tin!) Finding it pretty easy to follow tbh and am averaging about 1 - 1.5lb loss per week.

I'm also doing shred, just done day 7 of it and I am feeling pretty good. It is hard and it hurts but I'm starting to see my legs get more tone and my arms look better. If you have a look on you tube the first level is there.

EvilTwins · 17/08/2013 21:07

I'm 5'6" and a size 14. I weigh just under 12 stone. I am determined to lose weight though Hmm Not doing couch to 5k but have downloaded a ribbing for weight loss app and am doing that. So far it's pretty easy to follow (and I also dislike running)

Fifi2406 · 17/08/2013 21:07

I'm 5ft6, a 14 in trousers 12 in tops and weigh between 11stone and 11 stone 4! I feel 11stone is (not tight) much better for me! Ideally I would like to be pre baby weight I need some inspiration!!! Good luck with your weightloss! You can dooo it!!

theoriginalandbestrookie · 18/08/2013 10:40

The pedometer is truly great for getting in more exercise without any faff.

For example yesterday I wanted to go for a run but then couldn't schedule it in before dinner and would have had to wait about an hour after eating by which time it would have been dark, plus I couldn't be bothered.

Instead I decided to go for a swift walk and managed to do about 3000 steps in 20 mins - no special equipment or procrastination required.

Also good for modelling behavior for your DCs. Since I have been using it I'm making more of an effort to play outside with DS or play hide and seek with him and encouraging him to walk places - should have heard the fuss he and his friend made when I said we were walking him home on Friday, all of half a mile!

If you read the Paul McKenna book I can make you thin, apparently they have done some research and the difference between thin and overweight people is around 1500 steps a day, amazing, and all for £18 for a decent pedometer.

Sadly exercise alone is not enough to shift loads of weight. Again I'd recommend buying the Paul Mckenna book and cd and downloading listening to it on an i-pod or similar. Costs around £10. Encourages you to really think about what you are eating, eating slowly and stopping when you are full. Much easier than slimming classes or restrictive diets - doesn't work for everyone, but at least it's not expensive and it's easy to do.

FIFIBEBE · 18/08/2013 11:36

5'5" and between 12 an 12 stone 5lb and a M&S 14. I don't do enough exercise and eat about 2000 calories per day. Very self aware!!

VeryStressedMum · 18/08/2013 13:07

I'm 5'5 and size 14 at 11 st 3. Aiming to be back to 10 st and a size 12.

Poppylovescheese · 18/08/2013 15:54

I am 5ft 5 and at 11 stone 4lb was a 14 now at just under 10 stone I am a 10, sometimes a 12.

CadiM · 18/08/2013 20:58

5'6 and 11st 8lb, comfortably 14 and sometimes a 12. Even have a size 10 top, talk about vanity sizing!

Barbielovesken · 18/08/2013 21:20

Sorry - know I'm not a size 14 now but I have been and wanted to reply - I've read so many threads on here and am astounded by how the same height and weight can equal a completely different size for almost everyone - huge differences. In my experience, it's about 14lbs per size, so for every stone you loose, you'll roughly drop a size. Think this is the 'universal' gauge also.

I've 3 dc, 2 under 3 - I WAS 16.8 stone when the youngest (just turned 2) was a couple of weeks old and roughly a size 18 (maybe a 20). I'm 5 foot 8. Today I'm 10 stone 8, I'm a size 10 in most shops, a size 12 in the 'small' shops (Jane Norman etc)

Its been 90% diet, 10% exercise for me.

Best of luck x

Just resurrecting this thread to say that I have Taken Action! I have joined Weight Watchers and have just lost my first half stone. Yay! Hopefully, I am now on my way to my size 14 goal. Have also bought a pedometer and am clocking up plenty of steps. Thanks again for all the replies to my original post.

Dress sizes vary so much, as do body shapes, you are going to get quite a range of responses! What is true for most people though, is that a stone usually equates to a dress size, as Barbie said, so use that as a guide from wherever you are now. I would also try and make sure that your target is within the healthy BMI range.

Sleepwhenidie · 20/09/2013 09:47

Oh and well done on the progress so far! Keep going Smile
