A thread for all those wanting support and advice for using mfp website and app. Welcome to everyone new and those of us that have been around a while Hmm

mynameisslimshady · 14/07/2013 21:11

Hi everyone.

I have just signed up to MFP and am starting the insanity workouts tomorrow.

My name is stayawayfromkfc if anyone would like to add me on it. I don't know anyone who uses the app and would love to have some support. I probably have about 2 or 3 stone to lose.

How are you all finding it? I tend to get a few weeks in to things, see some progress, get a bit smug and have 'just one' treat or day off from my workout and eventually give up.

RockinD · 17/07/2013 13:10

I?ve been doing this for 12 days now.

It gives me a basic daily allowance of 1200 calories and then adds extra calories on for any exercise I do, so most days I actually have an allowance of around 1450 calories, but I usually come in ?under budget?.

When I complete the day it gives me a motivational message saying ? if every day were like today you will weigh x lbs in 5 weeks?

That was great in the beginning, but today x = 1.5lbs less than I weigh now, which is not motivational at all.

I lost 4lbs in the first week, but am now starting to put it back on, so my deepest fear is that this message is right.

Where am I going wrong? I am usually under on total calories, but I am way over on sugar and protein, under on carbs and way under on sodium. The majority of the sugar is coming from fruit and veg.

My basic diet has been approved by an NHS dietitian. I eat cereal for breakfast, salad and lean protein at lunch and have a proper meal in the evening. I get my five a day (and more) every day, I drink loads of water and when I snack it?s fruit or fat free yoghurt. I do not eat bread or potatoes.

I am desperate to lose the 3 stone I have put on in the last two years due to mismanagement of my hypothyroidism

Newrowsees · 18/07/2013 22:09

RockinD, you might not want to eat back your exercise calories. The net calorie figure on MFP encourages you to, but many people find that this causes them to overeat. Could you manage with only eating half of them?

RockinD · 19/07/2013 09:22

I'm not eating back all my exercise calories. I've been under every day this week, by anything up to 300 calories, but of the 4lbs I lost last week, I have now put 2lbs back on.

Eating less, exercising more, gaining weight. Sad

sunnyshine · 20/07/2013 07:55

Oooh I hadn't seen this beforeSmile been doing this 5 days and am weighing myself on Monday! Will read through thread later to see everyone's tips etc

Newrowsees · 21/07/2013 09:40

Ah RockinD, this might be a case of not eating enough, perhaps? You may be causing your metabolism to slow down if you're actually eating fewer than 1200 calories a day? Unfortunately I don't have any experience of this but maybe someone will come on to help. It must be frustrating if you've cut your intake dramatically and are still not losing Hmm

RedBushedT · 21/07/2013 09:47

Can I join you? I'm etphoneshome on MFP

I seem to just be maintaining at the moment, which is better than gaining obviously, but I'd like to lose a stone. Smile

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 27/07/2013 14:05

Phew, I couldn't find this thread yesterday!

I was feeling very motivated yesterday but am lacking enthusiasm today.

Just been food shopping and bought too many unhealthy snacks Blush. However, the cashew nuts that I sneakily added to the trolley have turned out to be unsalted (yuk!) so that should limit the amount I will consume in one sitting!

DS has just arranged to stay at a friend's house tonight so that lets me off cooking dinner and I can have a salad-type meal instead.

All I need to do now is hide the rest of the Jaffa cakes!

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 27/07/2013 14:07

RedBushed - I've just sent you a friend request!

herladyship · 04/08/2013 15:50

I've just stated MFP & would love some friends!

I'm day 5 in & been fairly good so far, want to lose 13lbs at 1lb a week if possible :)

MFP name is pennyat61

pregnantpause · 05/08/2013 15:47

hello, can I join? I've tried adding a few of you but can't figure out how to add without Facebook or email. If others know how, I'm all for support and motivation, my username is joneshay. I've been cal counting for a few days now, but used mfp last year to lose two stone. Unfortunately I have put the weight back on, having joined the MN cookery club and eating with gay abandon for 8 months! Here I go again then, but , at least this time I know I can do it. Good luck allSmile

SquidBobSpongyPants · 06/08/2013 00:26

Ive just joined and added a few of you. Anyone who wants to add me im Someonegetmeabigmac. Good luck everyone

FeijoaVodkaStat · 07/08/2013 17:38

I keep ignoring this thread. I'm either being really really good and trying to concentrate on that, or being completely bad and not wanting to fess up.
Over all thankfully the good outweighs the bad, but not enough for my liking!

I've also been feeling a bit down about not being able to exercise much due to an injury and a lag in physio appts due to Summer holidays. I'm kind of past that now, but am just feeling totally lazy instead. I think tonight's dinner will take me over though,s o good motivation to get out for a walk once my smalls are in bed Grin

Hello to all the newbies too Grin[wave]

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 08/08/2013 10:56

Hey, joined the thread ages ago then went on holiday and stopped counting calories. My husband got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and needs to lose a lot of weight so in the process of overhauling the family diet I am back on course with my healthy eating. What I've done to make it manageable is to set a target of .5 lb a week, set my exercise level to sedentary (although I am probably more lightly active) and stopped accounting for breastfeeding(14 month old who although he eats three meals a day is still a big fan of milk as well) at all. This gives me a calorie allowance of 1410 which feels manageable and I am again losing, slowly and sustainably. I seem to plateau for a few days then another lb or so will disappear - I should probably weigh myself less, I currently weigh every morning Blush

I am hoping to do some more exercise too but I had a cervical treatment yesterday so have to take it easy for a week or two - I feel fine but I want to follow the advice.

My snack of choice at the moment is a punnet of raspberries or a nectarine - both great at this time of year, also a couple of squares of dark chocolate is a great treat.

I'm kidsparrow on myfitnesspal if anyone wants to add me Smile

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 08/08/2013 11:02

Oh and I've discovered a great food blog at www.skinnytaste.com/ also Pinterest is good for finding recipes I think.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 08/08/2013 11:02

www.skinnytaste.com/

pregnantpause · 08/08/2013 22:12

Ooh raspberries. I've been having strawberries, as if I get to the grocery early enough, the grocer sells yesterdays off cheapSmile

I think mfp sets the goals too low- when I first joined mfp I did the 1200cal a day recommended and really struggled to lose. I raised to 1500 I found I lost weight much faster. (althoufh I pyt it back on when I stopped)Now that I exercise regularly, I have set it at 1700 a day, but don't eat back exercise burn back.
Very happy that i've lost 4lbs this week.

herladyship · 08/08/2013 22:36

I'm not able to search for you by your MFP usernames? It only offers me FB or email.. any tips?

(I'm 'pennyat61' if anyone wants to add me)

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 09/08/2013 14:25

Just put the username into the email bit penny and it'll work.

herladyship · 09/08/2013 22:35

Thank you :)

Have sent lots of requests

watchingout · 12/08/2013 20:41

Delurking Grin
I have scrolled back through and added a few names - thank you to those that have accepted me (watching54) on MFP

Home alone atm. Which is good, but struggling to resist opening bottle of wine as a "treat". Keep telling myself "you are not a dog, do not reward with food" I've hit my goal of calories today (1300) and I am NOT going to eat back my exercise extras

Please help me to resist/distract me!

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 13/08/2013 19:10

It's that idea that something you will regret is a treat isn't it? I find that hard to break away from too. I don't drink so its more likely to be sweets for me but it never really hits the spot the way I want it too and then after I feel rubbish!

So don't do it!

I am a bit off track due to going out for lunch with my dh but it was worth it - amazing Indian food. Estimated my calories at 1000 - I hope it wasn't more than that maybe even a bit less - we didn't have anything in a creamy sauce or any pakoras but it was a bit of a feast all the same! Hope I haven't immediately regained the pound I lost!

I'm thinking about doing the shred when I can do proper exercise again(can't at moment due to minor op). Looks mental.

NeedChoos · 16/08/2013 08:24

Delurking and I've sent a few requests to a few of you.

I've been doing mfp 3 weeks and lost 2.5lbs....

MFPname · 16/08/2013 12:05

Hello, I'd like to join the gang please! Will add a few names I can see on here but please feel free to add me too, my user name is rachelhumph
I've name changed for this post as my mfp user name is not very anonymous :-)

I lost about a stone so far but had a break as I had a hip replacement 5 weeks ago and weight is starting to creep up now so time to get back on it.

I do find that I only really lose if I stay quite a way under the 1200 cal, low days of 900 seem to do the job (not every day but if I'm not hungry it's good if I can do that a few days a week). Perhaps I am more sedentary than MFP can imagine :-)

I've got a fitbit and aiming to get more and more active as I recover from op but won't eat the exercise cals.

MFPname · 16/08/2013 12:13

Oh and I'd like to lose another two stone to get me to a size 12.

Intermediate goal of one more stone to get my BMI under 25
