Questions

  1. Can I drink tea and coffee with caffeine and a splosh of skimmed milk?
How much?
  1. When I look at a product and the carb content what classes as low carb? How many carbs per 100g am I looking for? I have bought a packaged cauliflower cheese so wondering if I can eat it?

TIA >

Hi everyone I am adding myself to the list as I am the fattest I have ever been apart from after having babies. I look in the mirror and I feel like I don't even look like myself anymore. 2012 was the year that I have put on 2stone(!) so 2013 will have to be the year that I take it off...

barleywood · 06/01/2013 10:50

Hi everyone. Outed myself on the old thread having lurked for ages.

Looking at maintenance more than anything else having tinkered with this WOE for around six months. The recipes and stories have kept me going.

If I lose more weight it would be a bonus Smile

EwanHoozami · 06/01/2013 10:52

Spam splendid info - thank you. I didn't know that about citric acid!

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2013 10:53

I find drinking water really hard though - when I am at work I can't manage it as I need the loo every half an hour. Making the water tepid definitely helps though.

I have meal planned for the week ahead, a very necessary thing as it includes two birthday celebrations and five people coming to stay.

Hello IamtheStigswife -

Spamspamspam · 06/01/2013 10:53

Ruprekt.

Yes you can drink tea and coffee but go for cream with it or lacto free milk if you can. Caffeine can actually hinder weight loss for SOME people - not all so in a few weeks it might be a good idea to cut out caffeine and switch to decaff. We cut out caffeine completely two years ago when we first started this way of eating and both had horrible withdrawals for two days but now if we have caffeine we feel dreadful. It's up to you whether to just ditch it now whilst you are going to be withdrawing from everything else or ditch it in a few weeks when you are feeling stronger about the diet principles.

Aim to have 20-30g carbs per day for the first two weeks. If a product has 4.1g of carb per 100g and you only have 50g of the product then you have had 2.05g of carb in that particular thing. If you try and keep a tally for the first couple of weeks you will soon know how many carbs you can have per meal/item etc. A lot of products show the carb content per serving as well as per 100g or per 100ml.

That's why you have to watch things like milk - if you get lacto free you can have more militres so the same carb content.

sybilfaulty · 06/01/2013 10:56

The oil thing is difficult isn't it? I can't use coconut as I can't BEAR the flavour (unless some kind soul tells me it is unflavoured) and was until recently using olive oil in my butter to stop it burning. Then someone pointed out that olive oil turns nasty once you heat it and it should be raw. I saw a programme a while back about the evils of corn oil and so we use groundnut, esp as it gets to a very high temperature. But now it seems not. Confusing eh?

We had DD2 throwing up last night so definitely a bug. She and I managed a piece of toast this morning, which is about as far from bootcamp as you can get. I reckon all bets are off though if you are ill, so am not feeling guilty. Lots of water is helping me to recover too.

Work tomorrow. booo! Must have a look at what it is I am supposed to be teaching this afternoon. Hope everyone is excited for tomorrow. I promise you it is great once you get going (and I didn't really notice the carb flu thing when I started last June so you might be OK.....)

Ruprekt · 06/01/2013 10:57

Thanks Spam

The thought of cream in tea and coffee makes me want to throw up! I hate the fatty taste which is why I have skimmed!

Will check the carb content on cauli cheese but am properly starting tomorrow so might eat it tonight!

Ruprekt · 06/01/2013 11:00

Blimey - when you have done WW for 30 years and switch to LC it is a whole new way of thinking!!

Sorry for so many questions................but

If I am aiming for 20-30g carbs a day.........what am I actually counting? Do I count carbs in chicken and fish or just veg? Eggs are unlimited and the fats are OK as long as I watch out for cream.

FurryDogMother · 06/01/2013 11:06

Ruprekt - there aren't any carbs in plain chicken or fish (or meat). Your carbs should be coming from (mostly) green leafy vegetables. As I understand it, we don't actually count carbs in Bootcamp, we just follow the rules and the carbs'll look after themselves, but Atkins induction (the first 2 weeks) limits consumption to 20g carbs or less per day. If counting, I count eggs as 1g carb each - they're actually around 0.6 - 0.8g carbs per egg, but I prefer round numbers!

Chocberry · 06/01/2013 11:08

Day 3 here today and feeling ok at the moment. Yesterday was hard, very hard, sugar cravings were very strong and I almost gave in. So proud of myself that I got through yesterday and still low carbing today!
Thanks for the youtube link, will watch that later.
I didnt know cooking with olive oil is bad, I cooked roasted veg with it yesterday!

Ruprekt · 06/01/2013 11:08

Oh thanks FurryDog.

Think I will take hard boiled eggs for breakfast (to school which will smell but I can sit on my own!)

TooImmatureMincePies · 06/01/2013 11:12

Ruprekt, I drink full fat milk in tea, but I know some people don't like it. My mum, for instance, has done years of calorie counting and can't stomach the fattiness. I am limiting myself to 2 cups of tea a day, though, because I take heaps of milk in my tea.

B: Greek yoghurt, massive cup of tea.

I haven't lost any weight since yesterday - are my expectations too high? Grin I do feel thinner, weirdly. Plus I know that starting to exercise for the first time in months can make you retain water. This time I will stick to the exercise, though - last time I stopped exercising because the scales stuck for about 5 days, which was very stupid. I am a muscle-free zone, particularly core muscles, and I think it means that when I do eat carbs, there is nothing to hold my tummy in and I look enormous.

Right, enough meandering - off to do some more washing before work looms tomorrow!

Spamspamspam · 06/01/2013 11:14

Ruprekt, Furry is right we don't actually need to count carbs as a general rule but if it helps you get your head around it a bit more in the first few days/weeks you can try and have a tally up on how many carbs you are eating by trying to understand food packets and carb content a bit more and try and get your mindset out of calorie/fat counting and more into watching carb content. 20-30 g is a guideline but some people can still get into ketosis on 60g of carb per day, it's all individual.

Try not to worry too much at this stage and just go with the rules and don't panic if you are counting carbs and you go over, however it did really help me when I first started out to keep an eye on the daily carb amount and understanding carb content in things.

mumat39 · 06/01/2013 11:19

Mornin All Smile

About thrush after antibiotics, I always get this so the gp just gives me a fluconazole tablet to take on day 4 of the antibiotics course. I think it's quite common for the reasons BIWI mentioned. Also, if you take probiotics, it's recommended that you up the dose of these whilst on ab's.

I find sugar makes me more likely to get thrush and really smelly wind oh the shame!

Coco, coconut is NOT a nut, so you should be ale to have it at school. It's actually a fruit I think.

Talking of coconut, does anyone know if KARA coconut milk is ok on this WOE

BIWI, hello again. I always thought that with olive oil, you shouldn't cook with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but normal olive oil was fine. It's something to do with the heat destabilising the doodaas in the extra virgin stuff hat makes it very unhealthy. I can't remember where. Read this but I'm sure I have read it and nt just invented it. I'll see if I can find out about this. Apologies if I'm wrong though.

Good luck for tomorrow everyone. Xxx

mumat39 · 06/01/2013 11:22

Spamspamspam, that's a brilliant post. Thank you.

WillieWaggledagger · 06/01/2013 11:26

I do still cook with olive oil from time to time (eg roast veg) because it tastes nice - like all these things you can't be perfect all the time.

LucyVFood · 06/01/2013 11:34

Spam and Coldethyl, thank you :)

These are new digital scales; somewhat ironically I felt my old cheap scales were not accurate enough and chucked them. rolls eyes

I will stick to it, especially now I'm (hopefully) past the worst of the carb flu. I won't weigh till next week now though, it's too stressful!

mumat39 · 06/01/2013 11:35

Not sure how legitimate this website is but there are links to others on the article which would suggest that olive oil actually better than say sunflower oil as it oxidises less, which is where the toxins are produced.

[[http://scienceornot.net/2012/09/15/is-it-safe-to-cook-with-olive-oil/ article here]

mumat39 · 06/01/2013 11:39

BIWI, I actually wonder if the thing with heating extra virgin olive oil is that it isn't as healthy as when it is cold. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad though. It's all so confusing.

Lots of people cook and fry with sunflower oil, but that seems worse. Do you think this is another one of those lies that the government and food industry have 'sold' us like with eating whole grains. Confused

mumat39 · 06/01/2013 11:39

Sorry here the link again

Wow. That video is fantastic, thank you for posting that, LaVidaLoCarb.

I seriously, seriously recommend that everyone watches it. It's a fab explanation of low carbing and, in particular, why low fat isn't the way forward for us.

It's quite long - 45 minutes or so without the Q&A session - but watch at least the first 10 minutes. He shows some charts (around 6 minutes 45 seconds in) about obesity levels in the US and how they rose from 1985 to horrific levels, from the point at which, in 1984, the American population was told that fat was bad and to be avoided.
