mumat39 It is easy to make chickens too dry, I've done that loads of times. I now always spread some softened butter over the breasts (of the chicken, that is Grin) before roasting with foil over then removing it for the last bit and it seems to work. We had some very evangelical christian friends visited from the USA who said "There isn't a food God didn't make taste better with butter on it", I always smile and think of them as I anoint it! If you use the posh butter with salt on it is even yummier.

I've never used Ketostix and have never had Carbflu (although I did feel a bit spaced out for a few days at first). Do we need to check we're in ketosis or can you assume you are as long as losing weight?

Aww Gless, you sound so lovely. Thank you. Thanks xxx

Mawbroon, good luck with the gaps diet. I've read the book and considered it for my DD as it mentions allergies as one of the conditions it could help. I didn't do it though as I was too nervous about cutting corn and rice from her diet as those were the only carbs she was getting. I know someone who did follow it for a good few years for her son and she said the change in him and his personality was amazing. I definitely think there's a lot in that book that makes sense. Good luck on bootcamp. Xxx

Think my name has fallen off list somewhere in cutting and pasting. But, I'm going to try my best to do bootcamp starting tomorrow. For those with families, do you make your dinner separate? There are only few meals a week I think I will be able to make for whole family. Also any ideas on good soups I can make at home that are low carb and young child friendly? Their fave is sweet potato butternut squash and also chicken noodle but as they are out i need to find something we can all eat for weekend.
Good luck everyone and thanks for motivation and inspiration. Want to lose 16lb by May and then bit more for september (bf wedding) so hoping to make good start over ten weeks.

Thanks timid. Lol at the butter on breasts Grin

I just used sunflower oil as that's what we had in, but will definitely do the butter and foil thing next time. I've never tried the butter with salt crystals but will definitely look out for that. Thanks so much.

I was also wondering about the ketostix. It'll be day 3 for me tomorrow so I'm wondering about getting some but apart from the colour, I'm not sure what I should do if they didn't turn light pink. I'm hoping they'll come with some instructions.

Thanks again for your help with the chicken. :)

Humphrey, hope you're feeling better soon. I'm glad your tonsillitis has cleared up. Xxx

Mumat you just pee on the end of them and hold them against the colour chart on the tub if they don't turn pink you are not yet in ketosis although you ideally want a very light pink which is confusing as the test bit is a beige colour and you can think the test has not gone pink- my husband can never tell! The main reason I advocate using them is so I can tell if I am drinking enough water - dark pink warns me to drink more.

I can safely say that i will be making and eating that braised cabbage again, i am drooling just thinking about leftovers.
I have a roast dinner today, and as i am not starting properly until tomorrow i had roasties and bread sauce Blush it was nice, but the cabbage was nicer Wink
I am all ready to go, although just checked the rules and because i am a right old heffer i need to chug 4.5lts or H2O down every day Shock I barely manage 3 glasses of liquid a day

Nearly bed time but how do you calculate how much water you should be drinking???

mumat39 · 06/01/2013 23:50

Spamsamspam, thanks for that. I'll try and pick some up tomorrow. Is there a particular time of day to use them? Or is it at every pee. I might need a few packs if that's the case ;)

Thanks again. xxx

I am also supposed to drink 4.5L OTT and have never managed that much yet to my knowledge. I do manage a respectable amount though and just try for as much as possible.

Today I have had:
Brunch (got up late): Boiled eggs with crispy bacon strips and mini sausages as "soldiers"
Tea: Pork chop, creamed leeks, cauli/broccoli florets and green beans.
Snack: M&S Nut & Seed Mix (2.3g carb per portion)

Did succumb to some Diet Coke though but am going to try to not buy it again once this is gone. I have discovered over Xmas that Diet Pepsi affects me really badly, I turn into a food hoover, although Diet Coke doesn't do that to me. Immaterial anyway as I will stop both.

I have noticed that I have become much more aware of my body and its reactions to food and drink - something else for you newbies to look forward to! Grin I think I have sedated myself with carbs for years!

Sandstone There is a link somewhere with the spreadsheet that tells you all the foods you can have and how much water based on your weight. Have a look on one of the tabs.

Bandersnatch You'll be fine once you get in the swing of it but it does sometimes need a bit of forethought. My family have, on occasion had some very odd meals because I haven't planned ahead!

I had a good day.
B - fried egg and 1.5 rashers of Quorn bacon
L - poached salmon salad
D - baked haddock with buttered kale and a v little bit of leftover braised sprouts (dp ate almost all of them)

The sugar cravings have very much receded. I know it's probably not allowed but I had a cup of strawberry and loganberry tea.

Drank 3.5 l of water

I have lost some weight. Yay. Grin

Haven't posted since I joined but all ready for tomorrow and very nervous too - have never dieted before or consciously watched what I eat since the bad old competitive skinniness of school days of yore! DH on board too so breakfast sorted and then the 'big shop' once DD1 is at school. Can I ask what might be a silly question but don't have time to go though both threads now - what changes after the initial 2 weeks, food-wise?

mumat39 · 07/01/2013 00:39

Just realised I should be on 3l of water a day Shock. Can I count my cups of tea towards that? I don't have milky tea, just a dash really. I've only managed a ltr today but have had 4 cups of tea and a cup of coffee. Hmm writing that down make me realise that's quite a lot. Oh dear.

Mumat39, from my point of no knowledge other than reading the tabs on the spreadsheet, water is always on top of tea, coffee, etc and it's non-negotiable Grin

thesandstonecat I can confirm that gless is absolutely lovely for real, and definitely doesn't look 40!! And her story is marvellous.

Well, as a complimentary therapist I am naturally interested in health and recognise that nutrition plays a huge part in this. I've always been a strong, well built Scottish lass (bum you could park a bike in as per Billy Connelly) and my weight has varied a lot over the years. My friend who lived in London came up for a visit during the summer and she looked so WELL, bright eyes, clear skin, shiny hair and cheekbones you could cut paper on, as well as slender. She told me she had been doing Dukan after she realised wheat was a problem for her.

So I read around the topic of low carb and just as I was doing this, up popped biwi and the next bootcamp thread. So I joined on 1st October and from then until my Big Night Out on the 15th December I lost 20 lbs. But more importantly I discovered energy, good sleep, total reduction in PMS, and that I do actually have a waist. And even more importantly I found wonderful women who will support and encourage me every step of the way, have a laugh a cry and a damn good double entendre about cucumbers!! Grin I hope you enjoy the journey too.

Wow the spread sheet is amazing willie
Although having added in my today weight and realising how much I have put on by going back to my old habits I'm a bit shocked. Have lots of excuses (we've move country, had Christmas, have started living with my parents, not finding work ect ect). Today is a new day and a new start and I'm feeling positive.

B) Omelette with rocket salad and a spider which gave me a massive fright as it was still alive (rocket picked from the garden) and 2 coffees with cream
L) Chicken, Avocado and rocket salad (no spider this time) followed b a small bowl of greek yogurt.
D) A feta spinach egg dish which my mum had made so has nuts.

Dinner for tomorrow is sorted as well as am making tandoori chicken and will serve with salad.

I have to say I'm probably not going to be able to post much over this boot camp. We are living with solar power and a very slow internet connection. My phone has a higher speed but I can't see a post before it submit it!
We are also gearing up to face some pretty full on weather. 38 degrees with fast winds so it's likely we will be on bush fire alert for much of the next few days.

Thanks BIWI for setting this up. I'm finding reading everyone stories really helpful and all the advice and sharing is really positive.

Oh and while I have put on a ton of weight in te last couple of months since re starting LC a few days ago I have not PMT hormonal pimples!!!! I wonder if they have always been sugar pimples and not hormonal all along.

Sorry for the epic post.

Another longterm LC here with my story.

Started on 15 Jan last year after reading Briffa in the Sunday papers. Was 16st, got down to 11st just before Xmas, am now 11st 2

Feel great! Good skin, have discovered hip boned, spine and a waist!! And a whole new wardrobe! My target is 10st 7lbs which puts me in the middle of the 'normal' range for my BMI. Had cholesterol checked twice last year and it's fine. Bloid pressure normal for the first time in 30 years.

Good luck everyone.
