PS Ewan I used mixed Italian herbs (dry) plus a dash of chilli powder on the celeriac chips. The chips were surprisingly tasty - so far have not missed carbs at all, or even sweet things but I assume I'm probably in the honeymoon stage and it hasn't kicked in yet. All geared up for carb-withdrawal, neurofen at the ready, almost excited about it (how sad am I??)

TryBreatheTwinkleFly · 06/01/2013 09:48

Lucy I feel your pain. My scales are being very spiteful as well Xmas Sad but at least we're doing something about it, eh Xmas Smile and it's so great to be able to eat lots of tasty stuff.

TryBreatheTwinkleFly · 06/01/2013 09:51

Argh! Whilst typing excitedly about the new WOE, I absentmindedly accepted a cup of coffee from OH, black - but with half a spoon of sugar!!! Feck, I've ballsed up already Xmas Sad - have chucked the coffee half way through like it's poison Grin

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 06/01/2013 09:54

Why is it that when we buy new scales, they never weigh in our favour?

Chin up, Lucy. You have already started to shed those pounds, so don't be downhearted.

TryBreathe - The plan for the first two weeks of Bootcamp is to avoid alcohol. After we move to Bootcamp Light, then you can include it at the weekend. But generally everyone ignores me on this

Not sure about lacto-free milk because, to be honest, I've never given up milk in my coffee. I try and restrict myself to 3 cups of coffee a day, though.

MulledwineGless · 06/01/2013 09:56

Lucy - sorry just catching up with Q's from yesterday - I don't know if Oxo has same properties in it. I had a google before but couldn't find any info

Avocado and spinach defo have it in- worth bearing in mind if you feel shaky in first few days.

I lost 2 stone with this woe- you can too!
There are some truly amazing stories from posters who have lost much more than me.
It really works and you don't feel deprived

OTTMummA · 06/01/2013 09:57

is groundnut oil ok to cook with?

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 06/01/2013 10:04

OTTMummA

Unfortunately not, according to this article

Groundnut oil is known as peanut oil in the US.

The best oil to cook with (if you're not using butter) is coconut oil, but it is expensive - at least in the supermarket. Apparently if you buy it at an Asian store it will be cheaper.

TheSandstoneCat · 06/01/2013 10:05

Just eating up the last of the Christmas food but am actually really looking forward to tomorrow. Although I am a bit sulky at the prospect, I know that after 2/3 days low carbing I lose all my sugar cravings and it gets easier not more difficult :)
has anyone ever tried low carbing with a 5:2 approach or is that a mad idea?

ShebaQueen · 06/01/2013 10:07

Morning all, I have just had some scrambled eggs for breakfast and am feeling virtuous. Can someone please point me in the direction of the spreadsheet veryone is referring to.

Many thanks

Spamspamspam · 06/01/2013 10:07

I can't believe how many of you are followers of this way of eating and going to give it a go, it's amazing :)

Although BIWI has covered a lot of these points I just wanted to re-iterate some things before we all embark on bootcamp tomorrow - it might help, it might not!

Firstly the way this diet works is that by reducing carbs means the body uses up the spare carbohydrate in your body first, then it turns to the Glycogen which is stored in your liver and can weigh between 3-7lbs dependant on the person. Once all the spare carb and glycogen is used up the body looks for other sources of energy to burn and that is stored fat. This process means you are in ketosis i.e. fat burning mode. The process of entering ketosis can take 3-4 days for some or even up to two weeks for others - note that no-one I know who has followed it religiously has gone for two weeks and people usually hit ketosis within 3-5 days. When you are entering ketosis you are likely to feel very tired, achey, nauseaus, flu like symptoms, weird taste in your mouth and generally bleurgh, you might think you are getting a horrible cold and feel like going back to bed but actually if you go with it usually within a few hours or by the next day you suddenly feel fantastic. The more carbs you have in the early days the likelihood that ketosis will take longer so try and "stick with it" by understanding what the feeling is. It really frustrates me that SO many people give up at this point saying a low carb diet made them ill, it wasn't for them etc etc when if they had just waited another day or two they would have made it through the crucial point and will feel amazing! Of course if you have two slices of toast and a banana you will "feel better" at the crucial ketosis point because you are re-loading on carbs..... Secondly you could be having serious withdrawals from Sugar which is evil so you are bound to have a headache, feel rough etc etc - sugar is addictive!!!

Bear in mind that you might need to lose 3-7lbs more than you thought as the minute you have carbs you are going to replace glycogen - if you go back to fully loading carbs after this diet you have not necessarily put 3-7lbs back on straight away you are just replacing glycogen. The lost glycogen is why a lot of people lose a load of weight in week one but usually it is mostly glycogen, some water and then some fat - but hey it is no bad thing to get a really good scale reading in the first week to boost you Smile

Secondly when you are in ketosis your body produces ketones and these need flushing from the body to keep your maximum fat burning going, this is why water is ESSENTIAL not just a nice thing to do - you must drink the water to flush the ketones out. Also water keeps your breath from smelling which can happen on this diet - although has never happened to me, or any of the people I know who have followed it.

Thirdly if you are going to use ketostix (which I recommend you do) please note there is no grading you are either in ketosis or you are not. If your stick is dark pink it does not mean you are further in ketosis it means you are not drinking enough water. Your sticks need to be light pink.

Fourthly Citric Acid can throw some people out of ketosis so bear that in mind if you are going to drink something that might appear low carb - check flue remedies, mints, chewing gum etc as Citric Acid can be hidden in some of these.

Lastly do not confuse Ketosis with Ketoacidosis - they are two completely different things and a lot of health professionals, pharmacists, nutritionists etc don't understand the difference. Remember people ate this way for hundreds and thousands of years before we were indoctrinated into the "low fat, artificial and not so artificial sugar" overload of the last 40 odd years. A very good mantra for us all is "Don't eat what your grandmother wouldn't eat"

Hope this helps, apologies if I have repeated anyone.

TheSandstoneCat · 06/01/2013 10:07

oh - and can I access the spreadsheet from an iPad - bit of a techno idiot Confused

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 06/01/2013 10:08

What I don't understand, and hopefully others will be able to explain, is why olive oil is one we're not supposed to cook with, when it's given a low PUFA/under 20% according to that article.

Spamspamspam · 06/01/2013 10:14

Lucy - me and my sister both have our old analogue scales and our new digital scales and both weigh us 7lb different (digital being higher)! It's quite funny as we constantly explain to each other what we weight we are on the "pink scales" versus the "new scales" ...also my doctor has old analogue scales which weigh be the same as my old scales so I like being weighed there Smile.

I ditched my old scales at Xmas and now just accept the digital as the ones to follow.

Whoever asked, I drink only lacto free on this WOE - it tastes no different to normal milk but has half the carbs.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2013 10:16

My breath smells AWFUL however much water I drink. I still love being in ketosis though, I just stand a long way away from people Grin

cocolepew · 06/01/2013 10:17

Mornong losers new and old Smile

The scales tipped just below 12st this morning Grin

I think it was frenchfries who asked about thrush? As well as ut probably being the antibiotics, any time I gave drastically cut down on sugar ir wheat I have got terrible thrush, but it will pass Smile.

Had bacon and eggs this morning,I'm using Crisp and Dry (rapeseed oil) to fry. Its what I usually use so is in the cupboard. I find using the butter far too rich for my tastes, though I did my chicken in it with chilli and enjoyed it. I can't use coconut because I work in a nut free school.

Good luck today everyone!

Doshusallie · 06/01/2013 10:19

My breath is bad too. Blush. Dh (helpfully) is constantly reminding me of this. I got mints in my stocking....

WillieWaggledagger · 06/01/2013 10:19

Sandstone - yes you can access the spreadsheet from iPad

Some have combined 5:2 with low carbing, and actually they do work very well together because low carbing keeps your blood sugar stable which means you don't crave food and can go for quite long periods without needing to eat. I personally don't fast because I have a history of disordered eating and I feel it would put me at risk of getting back into bad habits. I do sometimes skip a meal though if I'm not feeling hungry, but I have been low carbing for nearly a year now.

I you are just starting out with low carbing I would suggest at least sticking to boot camp rules for two weeks (including eatin three meals a day) to make sure you are properly in the swing of it. If after that you wanted to try out 5:2 or intermittent fasting of another kind then I don't think there would be anything wrong with that

LucyVFood · 06/01/2013 10:19

Thanks Try, BIWI and Gless, and everyone really! You're all so impressive and focused.

I wish I'd weighed myself before I started instead of on day 5. Ho hum, too late now. But I do feel less bloated and I don't have a headache today, which is nice!

Plus, I had full fat Philly wrapped in ham and two boiled eggs for breakfast, so I really can't complain!

Thanks
Doshusallie · 06/01/2013 10:20

Lavida can you link to the YouTube video again please?

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2013 10:22

withdrawing sugar always makes thrush symptoms worse to begin with - you are starving it of food and it is attempting to make you feed it by flaring up. Starve the bugger out Grin

spamspamspam - brilliant post. Thank you Thanks

Ruprekt · 06/01/2013 10:38

Am feeling slightly overwhelmed but determined for tomorrow.

DH has started already and had a delish looking omelette of cheese, mushrooms and ham for breakfast.

LaVidaLoCarb · 06/01/2013 10:40
