I can't believe how many of you are followers of this way of eating and going to give it a go, it's amazing :)
Although BIWI has covered a lot of these points I just wanted to re-iterate some things before we all embark on bootcamp tomorrow - it might help, it might not!
Firstly the way this diet works is that by reducing carbs means the body uses up the spare carbohydrate in your body first, then it turns to the Glycogen which is stored in your liver and can weigh between 3-7lbs dependant on the person. Once all the spare carb and glycogen is used up the body looks for other sources of energy to burn and that is stored fat. This process means you are in ketosis i.e. fat burning mode. The process of entering ketosis can take 3-4 days for some or even up to two weeks for others - note that no-one I know who has followed it religiously has gone for two weeks and people usually hit ketosis within 3-5 days. When you are entering ketosis you are likely to feel very tired, achey, nauseaus, flu like symptoms, weird taste in your mouth and generally bleurgh, you might think you are getting a horrible cold and feel like going back to bed but actually if you go with it usually within a few hours or by the next day you suddenly feel fantastic. The more carbs you have in the early days the likelihood that ketosis will take longer so try and "stick with it" by understanding what the feeling is. It really frustrates me that SO many people give up at this point saying a low carb diet made them ill, it wasn't for them etc etc when if they had just waited another day or two they would have made it through the crucial point and will feel amazing! Of course if you have two slices of toast and a banana you will "feel better" at the crucial ketosis point because you are re-loading on carbs..... Secondly you could be having serious withdrawals from Sugar which is evil so you are bound to have a headache, feel rough etc etc - sugar is addictive!!!
Bear in mind that you might need to lose 3-7lbs more than you thought as the minute you have carbs you are going to replace glycogen - if you go back to fully loading carbs after this diet you have not necessarily put 3-7lbs back on straight away you are just replacing glycogen. The lost glycogen is why a lot of people lose a load of weight in week one but usually it is mostly glycogen, some water and then some fat - but hey it is no bad thing to get a really good scale reading in the first week to boost you
Secondly when you are in ketosis your body produces ketones and these need flushing from the body to keep your maximum fat burning going, this is why water is ESSENTIAL not just a nice thing to do - you must drink the water to flush the ketones out. Also water keeps your breath from smelling which can happen on this diet - although has never happened to me, or any of the people I know who have followed it.
Thirdly if you are going to use ketostix (which I recommend you do) please note there is no grading you are either in ketosis or you are not. If your stick is dark pink it does not mean you are further in ketosis it means you are not drinking enough water. Your sticks need to be light pink.
Fourthly Citric Acid can throw some people out of ketosis so bear that in mind if you are going to drink something that might appear low carb - check flue remedies, mints, chewing gum etc as Citric Acid can be hidden in some of these.
Lastly do not confuse Ketosis with Ketoacidosis - they are two completely different things and a lot of health professionals, pharmacists, nutritionists etc don't understand the difference. Remember people ate this way for hundreds and thousands of years before we were indoctrinated into the "low fat, artificial and not so artificial sugar" overload of the last 40 odd years. A very good mantra for us all is "Don't eat what your grandmother wouldn't eat"
Hope this helps, apologies if I have repeated anyone.
