I'm hoping this link to youtube works, this is such an interesting and informative talk, even if you have been low carbing for some time. I also saw this guy interviewing Gary Taubes on Youtube and his webseite is excellent (www.dietdoctor.com)

mumat39 · 05/01/2013 21:37

Starfish, your summary of the rules is brilliant. It is good isn't it, to just know that you can't. I'm terrible with any sort of flexibility in a diet as I will always assume it'll be okay.

I'm only on day 1. Just had a meal of chilli beef, without the beans and cauliflower rice. I didn't do enough rice though, so I'm thinking I'd like something else but will wait and see if I feel full in a bit. what's that all about. Usually I'd have had more of whatever I could find

I have that watery mouth feeling again, but it did go yesterday after not too long. I've never done that before either, when I've tried LC before, that watery mouth hing has made me eat.

I have a quick question. is is okay to have the odd spoonful of virgin coconut oil?. I remember being told by someone that it's full of good fat so I bought some. I know it sounds gross but I do like the flavour so just wondered. I could also eat butter in smaller amounts

Thanks again. xxx

mumat39 · 05/01/2013 21:40

Willie, thanks for your help with the spreadsheet. I'll just pop in 179.2 into the spreadsheet now.

Thanks
MrsHerculePoirot · 05/01/2013 21:49

Of course, the beauty of this WoE is that you do NOT NEED TO COUNT ANYTHING. However, those of you using MFP, you need to add the fiber column to your settings and then remember to subtract the total fiber count from the total carbs count to find the net carbs, the ones we are interested in. This is because it is a US site. I could only do it when logged into the main website and not the app. To do it go to Food, then settings and then you can add fiber to the nutrients tracked on here and the extra column will appear.

If you fancy it you can install a script that will then show the net carb count when logged in via the website. I have only been able to do this on my laptop btw not my ipad, iphone or app. It requires firefox and greasemonkey and the instructions are here: cavemanketo.com/configuring-mfp/ I didn't have greasemonkey before, but it took seconds to install the add on to firefox.

Just thought I'd share in case that helps anybody!

Hi, I've been reading the thread and it sounds very inspiring. I have an auto-immune disease and I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the no-sugar approach is helpful. But mainly I need to off load lots of excess weight! May I join you? I've been lurking and following the plan from today lunch time, did a big shop and have eaten:

L: courgette, feta and a dash of boursin frittatas, plus a small lamb and garlic steak.

D: celeriac baked into herby chips, some greens, with the other lamb and garlic steak.

Does this sound ok?

MrsHP and captainmummy - thanks so much Thanks - I did not know that about total carbs / net carbs!

Just did a quick google and found a really excellent explanation with picture of a food label - may be helpful: What is the Difference Between Carbs and Net Carbs? How to Calculate Net Carbs On A Low-Carb Diet

mumat39 · 05/01/2013 22:33

Hi TryBreathe
I have Hashimoto's which is an autoimmune condition too. It means I have an under active thyroid, and I remember reading about a tv person Melissa Porter where she also talked about a higher protein diets helping her. I read about her around the time I was diagnosed but then forgot until you just reminded me that this way of eating has got to be a good thing for me. Just wish I'd done it sooner.

I have no idea about your foods that you listed other than to say your meals sound delicious. :)

Bessie123 · 05/01/2013 22:43

I have a tip for those of you craving sugar (I still am). I warmed a small cup of milk (small teacup size) with a couple of drops of vanilla and chocolate extracts. Having not had sugar for a few days, it tasted quite sweet and when the milk warms it becomes slightly sweeter anyway - I think the heat releases lactose? The vanilla and choc extracts don't have sugar in so I guess it's ok..?

MrsHerculePoirot · 05/01/2013 22:49

novelty are you in the US? That is useful for American labelling, but in the uK, you are just looking at the total carbs as fibre isn't added here.

OP posts:
MsRinky · 05/01/2013 22:51

Coconut oil is fine.

Bessie, milk is limited because of the lactose. You're feeding the craving. If you can find the will to not give in to the urge for sweetness for a week or so, it will go away, I promise.

Bessie123 · 05/01/2013 22:53

Oh dear. I didn't have any other milk through the day, is a small teacup's worth that bad? I guess it's about the same as in 2 white coffees. Is that too much?

MsRinky · 05/01/2013 22:58

I don't mean the carbs will be really high in what you've had, but its like using artificial sweeteners. No carbs, but you aren't giving yourself the chance to break the urge for sweetness. Honestly, if you can do without, you'll soon find that you simply don't crave it.

NoveltySlippers · 05/01/2013 23:06

Hi MrsHP - sorry, I meant that in relation to when using MFP.

I am in the UK. (Oop north in fact!)

However - I am now a bit confused Confused

I do the subtracting of fibre only when on MFP. However - what if it's a UK product and I've bar coded it, so all the nutrients etc are accurate. Do I not have to subtract the fibre in this instance?

(Sorry if being a bit of a thickie....it's late that's my excuse)

NoveltySlippers · 05/01/2013 23:11

Hi again MrsHP

Thought I'd give you an example in case I wasn't making any sense! was talking gibberish

If I bar code scan 'Co-Op - Truly Irresistable British Pork Chipolatas', the nutrition summary says: Carbs - 2, Fibre - 1.

So in that instance, do I NOT subtract the fibre as it's a Brit labelled product?

TryBreatheTwinkleFly · 05/01/2013 23:19

Hi mumat39 thanks for the nice words about my meals today Xmas Smile

The lack of sugar swings should hopefully help with stabilising our conditions - I wonder if auto immune conditions are a newish thing, rising in correlation with our modern sugar addiction? Or maybe they were just not recognised before.

ShebaQueen · 05/01/2013 23:27

Hello, I'm new to Mumsnet so please be gentle with me!

I have successfully lost weight in the past with low carb diets but have always slipped back into bad habits and am now the biggest I've ever been.

I would love to join your group if you'll have me and am hoping you'll help me stay motivated.

timidviper · 05/01/2013 23:43

novelty You have that right I think, if it is a UK labelled product the carbs shown is what you count. If it is a US labelled product (like some from Costco) or american info (like MFP) you have to subtract fibre from carb to get net carbs.

Welcome ShebaQueen we're all in the same boat here!

I've just done my first day back on plan and have that funny feeling which I know is not really hunger, it is just not being bloated with carbs.

There is so much new health and nutrition information becoming available. It is kind of scary how we have all been misled.

ShebaQueen · 05/01/2013 23:50

Thanks Timid and you are so right about the conflicting advice. I definitely feel better without sugar, much as I love it.

I hate the feeling at the start of a low carb diet but I love the way it stops the bloating, I'm a real apple shape and carbs go straight to my tummy.

Look forward to losing weight with you Smile

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 06/01/2013 00:06

Welcome, ShebaQueen!

Bessie123 · 06/01/2013 00:15

I love the positivity you all have. The only thing keeping me away from the sugar just now is the baby weight I'm carrying. Otherwise, there is no way I would be doing anything other than stuffing my face with chocolate or sweets and maybe having a glass of red wine. I don't feel better today, I feel sugar addicted.

I am resisting sugar so far though. We went to a birthday party today and I had carrot and cucumber sticks and some cheese, and herbal tea. No wine or birthday cake, get me.

So how do you all commit to this woe? I really am struggling with no sweet things. I can live without the pasta, bread etc.

It is good to hear you all saying i will stop missing the sugar but [whispers] I don't know if I believe that yet.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 06/01/2013 00:21
Grin

When you start to see the weight go.
When you start to realise how much food you can eat.
When you realise you aren't hungry between meals any more.
When you realise this has stopped you obsessing about food/calories/what you can eat next.
When you realise how much energy you have.
When there are no more IBS/thrush issues.
When your skin is clear.

... and that's just a starter for 10

Those of us who have experienced some/all of the above are, actually, pretty evangelical about low carbing. And we only started doing it to lose a bit of weight!

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 06/01/2013 00:21

Seriously. Sugar is evil.

timidviper · 06/01/2013 00:28

Bessie I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't experienced it first hand but you really will come through it. I always struggled on WW or SW as I could not imagine eating a meal without something sweet after it and my sweet tooth was what always tempted me to cheat.

This Xmas I came totally off-plan and decided I would have whatever I wanted and cope with the damage afterwards. I have eaten sweet stuff and enjoyed it but have not been ruled by it if you know what I mean and have not had to eat it till it was all finished - I even threw away some stale cake today. That has never happened before! Ever!

Give it time.
