New Year Low Carb Bootcamp

1000 replies

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 21:30

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and that Santa brought you everything that you deserved! Xmas Grin

By now, I'm guessing that many of us will be rather tired of chocolates and stodgy food. Mince pie anyone? Xmas Wink

So. The next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on 7 January. It will run for 10 weeks, which will take us to mid-March. The idea of Bootcamp is that we have an initial strict fortnight, which will see a significant amount of weight loss, followed by a more relaxed 8 weeks.

Overall, if you follow the rules, you can expect to lose anything up to 20lbs in this time period.

So who is in?

If you want to join us, add your name to the list and tell us what your aims/objectives are.

I will start ...

I am taking it easy and eating cheese today (I normally don't as I am one of those unfortunates that can do dairy and lose weight) but I feel I cant bear to give it all up in one go.

FallingOver · 02/01/2013 11:59

BWIW I take your point. I find it hard to get a good middle ground of eating, to be honest. Yesterday is probably as strict as it gets for me. I'll try and add more veg to salads etc today, and might have a couple of spoons of yoghurt this evening. To be fair, this IS Bootcamp, so a strict approach to counteract the gluttony of the festive season is to be expected for a couple of weeks.

DharmaBumpkin · 02/01/2013 12:01

Biwi, thanks so much for the breakdown... It was definitely the soup, the can 'serving size' was 1/3 of the can, and I of course read it as being forced the whole thing... So that was 23g of carbs right there!

The soya milk is definitely low carb - 0.2g per 100. The berries are only 6g carbs per 100g so I thought they would be okay in those quantities but will avoid for the next couple of weeks!

Was a bit grumpy about that Blush as I thought the yoghurt would be too sour without them, but much to my surprise it's quite edible!

Am definitely less hungry today, and trying to drink loads of water to kick the carb headaches!

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 12:04

Yes, FallingOver, it is supposed to be strict, which is why I wave my Big Stick around with Gay Abandon Grin - but it's supposed to be about eating good food, and in a healthy way. Please don't be so strict with yourself!

Dharma - I assumed you'd made the soup - but a useful lesson there for all of us. If you're buying anything ready-made, always read the label and make sure you're read it properly!!! If you can't face the yoghurt on its own, try it with a bit of vanilla extract (but check it's not one with sugar in it)

OP posts:
WillieWaggledagger · 02/01/2013 12:06

Fallingover you can include butter in your scrambled eggs, and oil on your salad, and that would help. Your brain needs fats to function

LucyVFood · 02/01/2013 12:08

Thanks Singing, some fab ideas there, although I'll have to get organised!

What's the situation with beans btw? I always associated them with protein (back to Slimming World, I think) but Google tells me they're carb heavy?

NoveltySlippers · 02/01/2013 12:14

Cocole I was also wondering about salad dressing. I've spent the past year feeling virtuous eating lots of salad whilst dousing them liberally in balsamic vinegar. I had no idea of the sugar content.... Knew it was too good to be true!

Thanks Willie for the Dijon mustard, white wine vinegar and olive oil suggestion. Now on shopping list.

Lifeisontheup - can you tell me what the name/brand of the low carb mayo you found in Sainsbury's was?

JenaiMorris · 02/01/2013 12:14

coco re dressings, you could try some Encona sauce mixed with mayo. I'm not sure it passes BIWI's processed test but you'd be using it in such minute quantities that it would probably not register, and it's certainly no more processed than bought mayo.

It's available in supermarkets, generally near the Tabasco (which would be another thing you could mix with mayo).

NoveltySlippers · 02/01/2013 12:24

Babsjansen I was recommended Zoe Harcombe by posters on here as I was looking to keep my carbs slightly higher (but still low carb).

Low carb principles still the same (absolutely no processed food or white carbs, no wheat, keep fats high), and her Phase One is very similar to boot camp. (In some areas she's even stricter as she doesn't allow any caffeine or any cheese!)

After that though, her Phases II and III (long term) are more liberal. You can eat brown rice, some brown pasta, sweet potatoes, and non-wheat grains like rye and oats. I think the daily carbs she recommends is around 50g-60g.

BIWI also suggested Dr Charles Clark. Have a look at both. So glad I found them! There's lots on Harcombe's website if you don't want to spend ££.

hurricanewyn · 02/01/2013 12:27

colette - I'm on mfp if you wanted to add me. Same name as here

Lifeisontheup · 02/01/2013 12:28

Novelty It's Delouis, more expensive but very tasty and don't seem to need as much. It's 0.9g of carb per 100g.

NoveltySlippers · 02/01/2013 12:34

Great, thanks Life Thanks

caramelwaffle · 02/01/2013 12:35

The best mayonnaise for Bootcamp is Delouis Mayonnaise (I've found it available from Sainsbury's and Waitrose)

caramelwaffle · 02/01/2013 12:35

NoveltySlippers · 02/01/2013 12:39

Thanks caramelwaffle - btw your username is making me hungry! Grin

caramelwaffle · 02/01/2013 12:43

Grin Not the best for Bootcamp, eh?

Lifeisontheup · 02/01/2013 12:51

I'm pooing for England today Blush, think it must be the increased fat greasing things (sorry TMI I know) plus carbs always bung me up. I can feel my tummy going down since starting cutting them out yesterday.
Why on earth do I eat so many when I know the result is bloating, wind and indigestion?

Ilovemyteddy · 02/01/2013 12:57

Afternoon all!

So 2lbs down from my start weight on Monday - it just shows that once you get back on the wagon and cut the carbs your body does respond (I guess it's the glycogen?) Anyway I'm still drinking loads of water and peeing for England, so all is good! Although I have the mother of all headaches - just shows what carbs do to you!

Escape - There are quite a few of us on here who have, or had, a lot of weight they wanted to lose. I was a tad over 16st when I started this WOE almost a year ago. I'm now 11st 2lbs and my target is 10.7lbs, which I would have reached easily this year had I not fallen off the wagon on 2 holidays plus Christmas. This WOE works for people like us who want to lose a lot of weight. The first two weeks of bootcamp are strict, but once you get over carb-flu, and the need to be organised with what you are eating, you end up having delicious food, lots of it; you don't get hungry, but you can eat if you do, and you can watch the weight fall off!

WRT exercise - one of the things I liked about the John Briffa book - which is how I came to start this WOE, is that he said that you didn't need to do exercise to lose weight. I have a physical job, so get a lot of exercise that way, and underneath the few pounds I have left to lose, my lean body fat is, apparently, what it should be. But in your case I would urge you to consider some exercise, even if you start slowly with a walk every day.

I haven't had a problem with dairy on this WOE - apart from yoghurt, which has made me throw up. But cheese is fine - thank God! One of the good things about eating natural fat - butter, cream, oily fish etc - is that the condidtion of my skin, hair and nails has improved a lot. And my joints don't ache (I'm 53 and it does become an issue when you are 'getting on'!)

YOU DON'T HAVE TO STARVE YOURSELF - even on Bootcamp. This is very important. If you are hungry, have a glass of water. If you are STILL hungry, have a LC snack - celery, pate, cheese, eggs.

Winegless's point about measuring yourself before you start this WOE is a good one - I wish I had - because there are weeks where you don't lose much/any weight, but your clothes fit better or are looser. If it's any indicator I have gone down from a 42inch bra to a 34 inch one.

The best thing of all about this WOE is that you feel fantastic! Not just because you are losing weight, but you just feel better emotionally.

mumat39 · 02/01/2013 12:57

Hi all.

Congrats to those of you who have all started already and have seen some losses. That's amazing and really motivating.

I had some Greek yogurt for breakfast and really enjoyed eating it. After about 20 minutes I had loads, and I mean loads of phlegm, sorry if that's too much info. Sad. I felt gross. After another 20 minutes or so I had really really awful heartburn. I have been avoiding too much dairy for a while and am now thinking I'm an idiot for thinking I would be fine on Greek yogurt.

I was going to order some more and also some Philly, but think i should keep avoiding dairy, so I am now confused about what to order instead.

We don't have or eat eggs as dd is very allergic to them, so apart from meat and crudités from cucumber and celery, is there anything else I can have. I'm not keen on soya as that doesn't sit well with me either.

Sorry to be a pain, but breakfast is the thing I'm struggling to get my head around. I ended p making myself sick as I was actually in pain. [:(]

I so want to do this and to succeed so any advice is really really appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Can I join in, please? I need a kick up the backside. Will weigh in on Monday.

Smile
mumat39 · 02/01/2013 13:04

Wow! 94 names on the list so far. Good luck everyone!

SeriousWispaHabit · 02/01/2013 13:05

I had better join.
I did low carb last year and lost 2.5 stone. 1.5 back on after 8 months of carbs. On the plus side I weight less this January than last January.

I know I'll feel better if I do this and I love how quickly the weight falls off at the start (although last year's was helped by a bit of Norovirus).

I'm half in!

Can't weigh myself (what a shame Grin) - no scales since DH put the ironing board through them.

I'm a sole vegetarian in a house full of carnivores and looking at the rules, I think it will be a bit tricky for a non meat eater. Also I can't bear mushrooms and I'm not massively fond of eggs...

Have just ordered some vegetarian low carb bks from Amazon which I hope will help - the Rose Elliot and Celia Brooks Brown ones.

So I'm not sure how doable this will be for me -any suggestions gratefully received!
