New Year Low Carb Bootcamp

1000 replies

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 21:30

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and that Santa brought you everything that you deserved! Xmas Grin

By now, I'm guessing that many of us will be rather tired of chocolates and stodgy food. Mince pie anyone? Xmas Wink

So. The next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on 7 January. It will run for 10 weeks, which will take us to mid-March. The idea of Bootcamp is that we have an initial strict fortnight, which will see a significant amount of weight loss, followed by a more relaxed 8 weeks.

Overall, if you follow the rules, you can expect to lose anything up to 20lbs in this time period.

So who is in?

If you want to join us, add your name to the list and tell us what your aims/objectives are.

I will start ...

escape On the last round of Bootcamp (and previous rounds) people found that they lost large amounts of weight in the initial weeks and steadier losses in the following weeks.

GinotPrigio · 02/01/2013 10:11

Good start to my bootcamp. Am down 3lbs today - from 13st yesterday to 12st 11lbs today. I imagine that's all water weight though from the stacks of bread/potatoes/crisps I was gorging.

thekitchenfairy · 02/01/2013 10:24

Thankyou BIWI...

Eggs and mushrooms for me this morning... not at all tempted by DHs fresh baked sourdough Hmm but I would love a coffee

Another Q... I'm finding that after a LC meal my first thought is for something sweet, it is a real shaky, taste craving... does this pass? Confused as I never usually want a dessert at the end of a meal... Especially breakfast!!!!! What can I do to stop me reaching for the dark cooking choc?

High on motivation here... Off to shine my sink now Grin

hurricanewyn · 02/01/2013 10:24

Two bratwurst & a fried egg for breakfast (not strictly bootcamp but less than 1g of carbs per sausage & tasty).

Leftover soup for lunch.

Homemade cheeseburgers & celeriac chips for dinner.

Glad to be back on the wagon- even better that I'm still on holidays this week. Hopefully I'll be through carb flu before I go on placement next week.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 10:28

thekitchenfairy - you are experiencing carb withdrawal! It's amazing the hold that sugar has over us. And even if you think you don't eat much sugar - carbs are turned into sugar by the body to use as fuel. Your body is trying to 'trick' you into eating more carbs. Drink water, or have a coffee instead (you can still drink tea/coffee, as long as you're careful about how much milk you are drinking).

A strict fortnight will sort you out, I promise! But this is why it's important not to give in and reach for something sweet.

OP posts:
cocolepew · 02/01/2013 10:29

Thekitchenfairy that feeling does pass. I always wanted somethong sweet after carbs, but hardly at all at the moment. I was dying for something yesterday and had a natural yougurt with blackberries to help.

hurricanewyn · 02/01/2013 10:30

thekitchen - I don't, but DH does. He has total with vanilla extract when he can't ignore the cravings.

SingingTunelessly · 02/01/2013 10:30

Lucy how about some hard boiled eggs, prawns with mayo for dipping, pâté with celery or cucumber slices, chicken/cheese salad box (with mayo!). Crispy bacon with salad/avocado (mayo!). Will try and think of more.

escape. The Idiot Proof Diet Book is really good at dealing with the emotional side of eating definitely worth a look.

eshie · 02/01/2013 10:34

Hi everyone, joined in with the tail end of last bootcamp...lurking and following!
Was 78 kg 5 ' 6" got down to 73 kg felt really chuffed and low carb def working for me. However massively off the wagon last 2-3 weeks big assignment had to be in for Uni today cue lots of sitting and chomping in front of computer plus christmas!
Dont know weight today will have to weigh in work but pretty sure its up...would love to join in properly this time. Good luck to all!

cathyandclaire · 02/01/2013 10:38

Right. That is it. enough is ENOUGH.
After a good start, the carbs got to me and I spent yesterday carefully tidying away all the uneaten chocolates, kettle chips, cake and wine into my tummy the cupboards are empty and I am puffy and bloated. I was going to Bootcamp light but I'm going hardcore from today. Am back on MFP to log it all down as I find the discipline helps at the beginning (and I can't kick the coffee so I have to keep a very close eye on the milk carbs...of to get some lacto-free now which is slightly better)

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 10:41

My body appears to have had enough of carbs, and is deciding to help me. I had to go to the loo at around 1.00am last night, for a huge poo, and I've been again twice this morning! Just as well, as I was feeling really bloated and uncomfortable last night.

Nothing like over-sharing, is there?! Grin

OP posts:
cocolepew · 02/01/2013 10:45

I haven't poo'ed so much in ages, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to go Shock

Could someone recommend a salad dressing for me? I like hot/spicy stuff rather than too creamy but would try a hot mayo. Thanks.

Falling Over

This is my first post on mumsnet, although I have been lurking on various fora for a while now. I lost quite a bit of weight from January-June 2012 through what in retrospect was serious low-carbing: no breakfast, salad at lunchtime possible with some fish or chicken, and little to eat in the evenings. My weight went down to about 8 st 1lb (I am 5'4"), and I suppose I was a bit too thin (although I felt great about myself!). Since June, weight has crept back up and now in the dreaded post Christmas weigh in I was 9 st 2 3/4 lb. So I am going to try and get back on the low-carb bandwagon, as I think it really does suit me - helped with skin, IBS issues, bloatedness etc. So here goes!

Yesterday:
B - morning detox tea
L - 2 scrambled eggs (no milk or butter), s + p, chilli flakes
D - 50g smoked salmon, 2 handfuls salad leaves.
Evening snack - cup of fennel + dandelion tea.

I also did a 50 minute Jillian Michaels Banish Fat Boost Metabolism workout. I did the 30 day shred before Christmas and lost a couple of inches, but felt it built too much muscle, particularly around my thighs. I also run a couple of times a week.

I weighted this morning and was delighted to see that I was 9 st 1 3/4lbs! Hoping that the downward trend continues.

WillieWaggledagger · 02/01/2013 11:12

Coco I make a vinaigrette with a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, tbsp or so of white wine vinegar and about 3 to 4 tbsp olive oil. I have an old jar and I put everything in, shake it up and use it over a few days. You can add more mustard to make it hotter

I was fine over Christmas, and only put on a few lbs, but these last few days and new year have really thrown me eating-wise. Feel horribly bloated and sluggish and we have friends over for the next few days. I think I won't be back on it until the 7th sadly and it will be tough! But also back to work so easier to get into the routine. I dread to think of the weight gain though!

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 11:19

FallingOver - that's not much food at all - you aren't really low carbing, you're cutting your calories, and that's not great for your metabolism. Your metabolism will slow down at a disproportionate rate to the amount of energy you are consuming - once your calories go up, which they will have to do, you can't survive like this - your metabolic rate will be lower, and therefore you will find that you aren't burning off the extra calories. This is the reason for the classic 'yo yo' effect of (most) diets.

You need to add more fat, especially, but also more food. Why are you eating so little? This is, actually, dangerous! The idea behind Bootcamp is to encourage a healthier way of eating, eating proper, natural foods.

OP posts:
Sorelip · 02/01/2013 11:20

I'm definitely getting on the LC bandwagon. Christmas and new year have really done a number on me and I've put on 5lb. I'm 11st 5lb and would like to get to 10st initially, then gradually get down to 9st 7lb.

The shopping was delivered this morning, so I've begun today. I will be going to the gym when I can (Dh works longs shifts). I can't wait to be the same weight as when I met Dh!

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 11:20

Willie - I'm not going anywhere near the scales until Monday!!!

OP posts:
colette · 02/01/2013 11:37

I have been on scales and am 10 st would like to lose a stone so better get started !CathyandClaire I have also been doing that sort of clearing up Blush
For those of you who have already started ( and have done previous bootcamps ) and are on MFP can I add you as a friend ? It would be really useful to see examples of whole day's food and exercise .
thanks

Hi BWIW - thanks for your response.

I suppose seeing the positive results I had last year from a similar diet has encouraged me to give it a go again. I enjoy 'clean eating', have avoided processed food for about 5 years, and have definitely found that avoiding food after 6pm has v beneficial results in terms of weight loss and maintenance. After each of those meals yesterday, I felt satiated (not full, an important distinction), and haven't yet felt hungry today. I just believe that for me personally, I don't really need to consume 1800 calories a day everyday. I'm working from home at the moment, so apart from exercise I don't really burn many calories sitting at my desk. Don't get me wrong - I love food generally, and of course indulge from time to time, particularly with meals out etc. I find it v hard to eat fats though - don't really like cheese, LOVE butter on bread (so sadly that's out!), and I know that dairy isn't great when low-carbing. I also don't eat much meat - once or twice a week at most. I know that fats are important, so any suggestions would be really welcome. Thanks again.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 11:44

FallingOver - but how many calories were you eating? Hardly any! You don't have to be consuming 1800, (if we are counting calories, although we're not!!!), but you do need to eat a reasonable number. It looks to me like you had less than 500 calories yesterday which is, I'm sorry to say, actually a stupid thing to do to yourself.

This WOE is actually that - it's a way of eating. It isn't about disordered, dysfunctional eating. Please, please don't eat like this. It isn't good for you and it's not the way to achieve a healthy, sustainable weight.

OP posts:
BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 02/01/2013 11:45

Absolutely agree about 'clean' eating, btw, and that's why artificial/processed foods are forbidden/to be restricted on Bootcamp.

OP posts:
PrincessSparkle86 · 02/01/2013 11:46

Hellloooo... Count me in!! Id like to lose another stone (which is what ive lost low carbing last time) ill have to weigh in later!

😃

Lifeisontheup · 02/01/2013 11:49

Have made a sort of egg salad with tomatoes and spring onions,( I know onions have higher carb than a lot of veg but still only 3g per 100g according to the packet ) with mayonnaise. Discovered a low carb mayonnaise in Sainsbury's which has half the carbs of helmanns and tastes more like it does in france.

I've also made a green bean salad with a mustardy dressing to keep in the fridge and pick at. Are green beans ok?
Also is green tea good, find drinking cold water a bit much in winter so trying to have pots of green tea instead.

Rooobs · 02/01/2013 11:50

YIKES! Shock

So today started with:

water
jasmine tea
2 fried eggs and 2 rashers of Duchy bacon (the best goddam bacon in the world FYI)

Defrosting prawns for lunch with garlic and chilli and leaves I think.

I'm tired and would love a red bull or espresso BUT I WON'T!

aiming to start Couch to 5k later.

Good luck everyone!
