New Year Low Carb Bootcamp

1000 replies

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 21:30

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and that Santa brought you everything that you deserved! Xmas Grin

By now, I'm guessing that many of us will be rather tired of chocolates and stodgy food. Mince pie anyone? Xmas Wink

So. The next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on 7 January. It will run for 10 weeks, which will take us to mid-March. The idea of Bootcamp is that we have an initial strict fortnight, which will see a significant amount of weight loss, followed by a more relaxed 8 weeks.

Overall, if you follow the rules, you can expect to lose anything up to 20lbs in this time period.

So who is in?

If you want to join us, add your name to the list and tell us what your aims/objectives are.

I will start ...

what know? Grin

prettybird · 31/12/2012 17:08

I suppose I'd better will join you. :)

Have pigged myself over the holiday period and will probably be back over 13 stone Blush

My objective is to get back to 10 stone (ideally just under) which is where I was nearly 4 years ago before i was made redundant. I know that'll take more than the period of this bootcamp, so I'll say my initial objective is to break into the "11 stone somethings", which is where I got to two Christmases ago before "life" got on top of me again.

New Year, new me :)

cocolepew · 31/12/2012 17:16

When I went to see my woo woman 2 months after my op the first thing she said to me was how many antibiotics I had been on. I hadn't even sat down! She said she could see the fluid in my face, this is causing sinus headaches too.
She gave me a very good probiotic to take and was pleased when I went back 8 weeks later that that had worked.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 31/12/2012 17:20

Have done some research, written out the rules for DH while he looked on horrified I'm going to drink tonight and then...the diet starts tomorrow Xmas Wink

HumphreyCobbler · 31/12/2012 17:27

gosh cocolepew, you have really been through it. I am sure that this WOE will help you. I suffered weight gain on citalopram too, and am a lifelong sufferer of water retention. I also suspect a mild tendency towards PCOS (if there is such a thing??) as I have some symptoms.

cocolepew · 31/12/2012 17:33

Humphrey, I had a mild case of PCOS, I know some people suffer really badly. My right ovary was full of chocolate cysts Grin

Noveltyslipers, would taking a vitamin for eyes help? Boots do their own as well as some others. My mum has glaucoma and dry eyes, her eye specialist recommended taking a supplement with Lutein in it.

froufroulala · 31/12/2012 17:59

Thanks for your comment Toomuch, you are right & I now don't feel sorry for myself I just need to get on with it. I have just done a weekly shop for the family & this week to prepare myself I will stop eating bread, rice, pasta & potatoes. I do have two questions though sorry if they have already been asked or sound stupid. First one, can you take supplements? Two, can you make soups with the correct low carb ingredients? TIA

Gilbertwasthebestcat · 31/12/2012 18:05

I started today but off out tonight for a curry which will be tricky but I have read up and I should be ok if I just have meat and no sauce. Does that sound ok? Will be hard to resist naan breads and stuff but have made a good start and even resisted the remains of the dcs' tea!

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 31/12/2012 18:07

Yes, you can take supplements. But check what the ingredients are first! I bought some effervescent Vitamin C tablets recently, and then discovered that one of the ingredients was potato starch!

And yes, you can make soup - as long as your veg is low carb.

thenightsky you can eat those when you're in Bootcamp Light if you like - but just remember that the whole point of this WOE is to break the addiction to all things sweet! (And remember that there are a whole load of artificial ingredients in those products)

TheHumancatapult · 31/12/2012 18:09

Frou

I take a multi vitamin

Novelty

I am probably more heavy on protein than a lot as I use it to prevent tissue damage as being in wheelchair an prone to pressure sores so I add own twist

But I admit to having a couple cans of diet coke over the holidays ok maybe more than a couple more like 7/8 but hey go it's Xmas got to have a treat and can't drink due to meds but have last one tonight and back to water I go

cocolepew · 31/12/2012 18:21

I'm a total egg fiend but the couple today made me feel a bit boaky Shock. My taste for certain foods seems to have changed since my op Confused.

Me and the DDs went to Ikea today. They had hotdogs and fries. I drank my water.

DH is sitting shoving an curry in him now, git.

LucyVFood · 31/12/2012 18:22

Hi, can I join? I've got loads to lose but my main goal is to shift as much as possible for my holiday in April. Low carbs is the only thing that ever works for me, although I never done it with Mumsnet! 7th is also perfect, although I'll probably start on the 2nd.

LadyStark · 31/12/2012 18:26

Right, I'm in. Low carbed before and it really works for me but have carb addict DP to contend with which is always a challenge. Think I need to find a way for me to treat every couple of weeks, know myself well enough to know that I need the occasional treat although will try to be very strict in Jan.

FurryDogMother · 31/12/2012 18:37

Gilbert - good curryhouse choices are chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and sheekh kebabs, plus cucumber raita (check they don't bung shedloads of sugar in it), and chilli pickle. Most curry gravies are full of onions, which can be a bit carby. Obviously no 'sweet' curries like dhansak. If you order a green salad instead of rice and bung the meaty lumps out of a curry on top of it (leaving most of the gravy behind) you should be fine. The salad works well as a vehicle for the meat Smile.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 31/12/2012 18:39

Hmm. I think you need to work on re-defining treats, LadyStark! Given that you can eat butter, cream and cheese on this WOE, how more 'treaty' do you want to be? Grin

OP posts:
FurryDogMother · 31/12/2012 18:44

Try not to think of carby foods as treats - eating low carb means you can eat steak with a sauce made from cream, Parmesan, mushrooms and garlic, or lobster dripping with butter, or fresh tuna steaks with garlic, chilli, soy and lime, or have Stilton crumbled over your salad, or maybe pan fried scallops with crispy bacon bits - THOSE are what I consider treats. Carby stuff just makes me feel bloated, lethargic and gassy - which is not much of a treat, really!

NoveltySlippers · 31/12/2012 18:55

MrsHP, NSSS
Awww how could I go now? Smile I am deffo staying put!

I think I'll just be having oatbran/whole oats for breakfast every other day (alternate with eggs); a slice of dark German rye bread every other day for lunch; and maybe half a sweet potato once in a while. Definitely no white carbs, nothing processed, and nothing that spikes the blood glucose.

I'm going to read the Harcombe book to keep me on the straight and narrow! Harcombe seems to allow brown rice in small doses but I'm not a huge fan, so will probably skip that..

Timidvoper thanks for that tip - will have a look at that too!

colcolepew Yes, I take a supplement at the mo called Ocuvite - it's fishoils and lutein. It seems to be helping, but I just need to keep taking it to see (no pun intended either - arf) if it's really helping.

Off to get ready for an NYE soiree now......thank goodness bootcamp doesn't start until Jan 7th.... I can just see the bloomin' crisps/booze/canapes already!

cocolepew · 31/12/2012 19:00

Timidviper that book looks interesting, thanks.

ToomuchheuchatendofHogmanay · 31/12/2012 19:01

frou may I call you that? We get informal on these threads, I remember we were talking about poo by day two Xmas Grin yes as our glorious leader biwi says supplements are fine and I found vitamin c (plus a coffee) helped my poo issues at the very start when I had carb flu for a few days.

gilbert If I am going for Indian meal, I have tandoori and also spinach as a side dish, there are some very yummy ones, worth a try.

I came on to say mass media positive comment about low carb shock Xmas Shock Xmas Shock Xmas Shock

Dr Hilary Jones in the NOTW Fabulous mag, its not all good news as he says LC "diets" are safe "for a few weeks" rather than our attitude of it being a healthy long term WOE but article ends "if we all cut down the amount of carbs we ate,we would be slimmer and healthier, so going forward, reducing your carb intake should help you keep the weight off"

I'm just amazed as usually the media is quite mocking about LC in general so I guess this is a start?!

MegTheCat · 31/12/2012 19:20

I'd like to join, please. Ive lost a stone and a half since last July with the support of the bootcamp threads and feeling so much healthier. I am 10 stone 7 now and want to lose another stone - and keep the weight off. More importantly I need to lose inches off my waist - it's not just unsightly, it's in the risk area for type 2 diabetes. Czn't cut and paste on my phone - will add self to list when we're back home. Currently staying at Bil & sil's for new year. Sil is being brilliant catering for my low-carbing. She's v laid back and has a coeliac and a type 1 diabetic in the family.

Teeb · 31/12/2012 19:21

Do many of you eat out often? following what a few of you have said about media/public opinion on LC lifestyle, and I can already feel myself dreading the usual palaver of going out for a meal with friends and not ordering potatoes or chips and hearing the 'what are you on a diet for? You don't need to lose any weight! don't be silly!' type comments, which although very well meaning are just lies. Am I the only one with friends and family like this?

sybilfaulty · 31/12/2012 19:23

Hello all

Just to add my view - if you are worried about poo issues on this WOE, then please take heart:

  1. You should be eating loads of LC veg to keep things moving and full you up
  1. The amount of water we drink will also help
  1. I took psyllium husk as recommended by IPD when I started. I have up after a month as, er, everything was fine without them. Good thing to take if you are worried though.

Please don't let horror stories put you off. There are plenty of veg and lots of great healthy food in diet. We also try to steer clear of processed food where possible which can only be good for us.

Happy new year everyone.
