Lots of people have already said they're up for this, so come and sign in on this thread, so we know who we all are! The wonderful WilleWaggleDagger has taken over the job of Spreadsheet Management, and you may find that your name is already on the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness:

link to the spreadsheet

You will also find the rules and some important info about allowed veg on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

But to give you a brief summary of things:

We start on Monday, with two strict weeks of low carbing. It's important that you are strict about it, to get your body used to it and for maximum weight loss. We are also, in these two weeks, getting our bodies to switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat - which means you will become ketogenically adapted.

There are only 10 rules to follow, and the idea behind these is to keep Bootcamp as simple as possible. There is no need to count carbs or weigh your food (unless you particularly want to). In summary, these are:

  1. Eat three, proper meals a day
  1. Avoid processed food
  1. Eat lots of fat
  1. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
  1. Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited)
  1. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
  1. No alcohol (Sorry - I did say it was strict!)
  1. No fruit
  1. No nuts/seeds
  1. No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Here are the rules, with the reasons/explanations as well

One of the most important things about low carbing is preparation.

This is not an easy diet to follow if you leave you food choices until you're starving, or if you are out and about. You will quickly find that the world of on-the-go food and snacks is all about the carbohydrates! Think about what you're going to cook next week, and plan your food choices and shopping accordingly. There is no need to cook anything different for you from that which your family will be eating, although carbohydrate-centred meals (e.g. lasagne or risotto) are obviously out of the question. Focus on meals that are based around meat/fish and vegetables/salad - your family can always have potatoes with theirs, or some other form of carb.

If you're out and about, buying low carb food can be difficult. However, places like M&S Food are getting better - you can buy pre-packed cheese in individual portions, or packets of ham/chicken/prawns, for example. Olives make a great snack, and they are very low in carbs.

It's really helpful to know something about the thinking/science behind low carbing

If you can, try and do some reading up about it. Good books are:

Dr Atkins "The New Diet Revolution"
Dr Charles Clark "The New High Protein Diet"
India Knight/Neris Thomas "The Idiot Proof Diet" (there is also an IPD recipe book, which has some great recipes in it)
Dr John Briffa "Escape the Diet Trap"
Gary Taubes "The Diet Delusion"/"Why We Get Fat"

There's loads of information online, and this site is really useful

.... and obviously there will the LBD threads. We will have one weigh-in thread, and I will start a week-by-week chat thread.

SingingTunelessly · 29/09/2012 09:16

Bloss best of luck today. Beautiful day here so hopefully for you as well.

Willie - spreadsheet! Please. Smile

Jins · 29/09/2012 09:18

I'll do it. I'll stick myself on the spreadsheet when I get near my pc

Itwillendinsmiles · 29/09/2012 09:46

Hello everyone,

I'm delurking/joining to help me get to my target weight of 126 lbs. As of this morning I've got 4 lbs to lose.

I'm a daily weigher - I also plot my weight on a graph as I then see a clear trend rather than the daily fluctuations.

I've added myself to the wondrous spreadsheet and will be back to add my weight on Monday morning - which is also the first day back at university (I'm a very mature student...) and the day I'm going to finally stop smoking!

Good luck to all.

hurricanewyn · 29/09/2012 10:06

I'm sneaking back in. Over the last week I''ve fallen off the wagon in a spectacular fashion and managed to gain 5lbs Blush

So, bootcamp starts today for me. No nuts, dairy (except butter), caffeine or sweetener for the next fortnight at least.

I need to get back into ketosis!

hurricanewyn · 29/09/2012 10:09

Ooh itwill I'm stopping for Stoptober too - DH has taken to blessing himself whenever he passes me since I told him Hmm

BigStickBIWI · 29/09/2012 10:10

Blimey - dieting and giving up smoking. Good luck with that! Grin

MagicLlamaStrikesBack · 29/09/2012 10:19

Signing in! Current weight 154.2lbs

Off to do the shopping list!

Livelongandprosper · 29/09/2012 10:41

Just wanted to tell you that before I did Bootcamp the First, I believed my washing machine had a faulty thermostat because it was shrinking my jumpers. What a knobber!

I had put on two stone (I'm only 5ft 1 and a lot of it went on my norks!) but it went on so gradually I couldn't see it. I also believed that bra-makers were using vanity sizing :)

I was sent some photos of an event I was at pre-weight loss and the NORKS!! How did I stay upright??????

BigStickBIWI · 29/09/2012 10:45
Grin
Livelongandprosper · 29/09/2012 10:57

I didn't even think my delusions through properly - if bras were vanity-sized that would have meant my norks were even bigger than the size I was squeezing into..... Confused

NewStartSameStory · 29/09/2012 12:39

Livelong - this can make norks shrink? Shock

BigStickBIWI · 29/09/2012 13:18

Oh yes! My sports bra is now too big, even on the tightest setting.

NewStartSameStory · 29/09/2012 13:26

Nork shrinkage would be perrrrfect. I think I am going to have a measurement book. I need to lose inches significantly in those places which are a nightmare to lose (thighs and norks)

BigStickBIWI · 29/09/2012 13:27

It's a really good idea to take your measurements before you start, as you can often lose inches even when the scales are telling you you've stayed the same.

Another good idea is to find a piece of clothing that is currently too tight, and each week to try it on. Getting back into clothes is the most rewarding feeling.

NewStartSameStory · 29/09/2012 13:32

I have half a wardrobe of clothes I want to fit into. That are just that 1 size or so too small. (mind you seeing as they are pre ds that is probably more realistically closer to two sizes)

BigStickBIWI · 29/09/2012 13:48

FOR ALL THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN'T LOW CARBED BEFORE:

Low carbing is a very different way to eat/diet, and you do need to get your head round it. (This is why it also helps to have done a bit of reading about it first). It will feel like a real leap of faith in the first week, when you tuck into things like bacon and eggs, cheese, butter and cream! But it works. And, most importantly, a high fat content is actually important. If you try and combine low carb with low fat, you will be much less successful.

That said, just because you can eat foods like this does not give you carte blanche to go mad! Keep your portion sizes sensible.

Once you get into the swing of things, you will find - and it will come as a very pleasant surprise - that you seem to have lost your appetite. That desire to gnaw your left arm off at 11.00 am, or to dive into the biscuit tin at 3.00 pm will vanish. This is a really good sign, and it indicates that you have stabilised your blood sugar levels. You may find that you are naturally eating less at this point in time as well.

You do need to be prepared to feel a bit shit for the first few days. This is carb withdrawal - sometimes called carb flu. You may feel headachey, shaky and generally irritable. If you keep your salt and potassium levels up, this will help. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado.

If you feel really bad, then add a few more carbs back into your diet. Don't go mad, though, otherwise you will just undo all the good work you've done so far! A few berries or nuts will help.

This site has some useful tips

Remember to drink lots of water, and make sure you're eating regular meals, with snacks if you need them.

Once you get through this, typically after 4-5 days, you will feel much better, and will feel really well and will have lots of energy.

Itwillendinsmiles · 29/09/2012 15:53

Thanks BIWI.

Hurricanewyn Best of luck to you both! My DH is 'lucky' in that we usually live in separate houses/towns Monday to Friday because of his work and my studying. Hopefully the worst will be passed before I see him next week... Hmm
