Lots of people have already said they're up for this, so come and sign in on this thread, so we know who we all are! The wonderful WilleWaggleDagger has taken over the job of Spreadsheet Management, and you may find that your name is already on the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness:

link to the spreadsheet

You will also find the rules and some important info about allowed veg on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

But to give you a brief summary of things:

We start on Monday, with two strict weeks of low carbing. It's important that you are strict about it, to get your body used to it and for maximum weight loss. We are also, in these two weeks, getting our bodies to switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat - which means you will become ketogenically adapted.

There are only 10 rules to follow, and the idea behind these is to keep Bootcamp as simple as possible. There is no need to count carbs or weigh your food (unless you particularly want to). In summary, these are:

  1. Eat three, proper meals a day

  1. Avoid processed food

  1. Eat lots of fat

  1. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

  1. Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited)

  1. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day

  1. No alcohol (Sorry - I did say it was strict!)

  1. No fruit

  1. No nuts/seeds

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Here are the rules, with the reasons/explanations as well

One of the most important things about low carbing is preparation.

This is not an easy diet to follow if you leave you food choices until you're starving, or if you are out and about. You will quickly find that the world of on-the-go food and snacks is all about the carbohydrates! Think about what you're going to cook next week, and plan your food choices and shopping accordingly. There is no need to cook anything different for you from that which your family will be eating, although carbohydrate-centred meals (e.g. lasagne or risotto) are obviously out of the question. Focus on meals that are based around meat/fish and vegetables/salad - your family can always have potatoes with theirs, or some other form of carb.

If you're out and about, buying low carb food can be difficult. However, places like M&S Food are getting better - you can buy pre-packed cheese in individual portions, or packets of ham/chicken/prawns, for example. Olives make a great snack, and they are very low in carbs.

It's really helpful to know something about the thinking/science behind low carbing

If you can, try and do some reading up about it. Good books are:

Dr Atkins "The New Diet Revolution"
Dr Charles Clark "The New High Protein Diet"
India Knight/Neris Thomas "The Idiot Proof Diet" (there is also an IPD recipe book, which has some great recipes in it)
Dr John Briffa "Escape the Diet Trap"
Gary Taubes "The Diet Delusion"/"Why We Get Fat"

There's loads of information online, and this site is really useful

.... and obviously there will the LBD threads. We will have one weigh-in thread, and I will start a week-by-week chat thread.

I'm in. I need to get this last stone to stone and a half off. I have a xmas coming up in december so will be needing an evening dress and am aiming for something slinky.

I am going to stop the dairy and aim to have just natural foods with the exception of shop bought mayo.

I'm in! Have lost just over 2 st so far, starting with WW then going back to low carb a couple of months back as I was sick of being hungry all the time.
Am generally quite good on the food front, it's just the wine that lets me down.

I'm 9 st 6 atm and would like to get down to at least 9 but have a feeling I'd still have a flabby tum there and may have to lose more to get rid!

Time to stop dicking about and knuckle down Grin

Thanks to biwi and wiggle for org all this.

I feel all emotional about the lovely support on here. Or maybe it's the fact I am having my last glass of Pinot for 2 months that is making me teary ....

Hi BIWI and everyone

Am soooooooo in for this! Have been low carbing for aaages but not properly. I'm too inconsistent - I can do really well all week, then blow it at the weekend.

I need to ask - do you need to be really careful with your portion sizes? eg, I'll make fish with veggies for dinner, but will be starving so will have a shitload of veg or salad. Should I be cutting that right down? (say no) - I'm thinking that a big plate of veg is better than a big plate of pasta/rice?

Report
BigStickBIWI · 28/09/2012 19:31

Portion sizes do matter, although much less on a low carb diet than any other. TBH, it really only seems to come into play when you're nearing your target and don't have much weight left to lose.

If you're hungry, then you need to eat more! When you have your fish and veggies, how much fat are you having with them? If you're hungry, that would suggest that you aren't eating enough fat. And yes, a big plate of veg is absolutely, definitely, most certainly better than a big plate of pasta/rice Grin

Signing in please. I have been on a previous thread but dropped out Blush. I have good excuses but realise that excuses are no use and I would still be beaten with a stick so am not going to bother Grin.
I am 10:9 at the moment; having crept up from a pretty stable 10:2 over the summer. Before low carbing, I was nearly 15 stone so I'm not horribly upset, but I do need to get back down to 10:2 ...am thinking of a 10:0 target?

Evening all.

Too immature I am 5 4 when I think tall. I consider myself a slim person I suppose, would just like to shift these last 3 pounds. 9 stone is my ideal weight. It's become a mental challenge now.

I dunno, just want to see results instead of bouncing up and down the same 3 pounds forever.

Will do BOOTCAMP.

Am doing 2/3s of this triathlon tomorrow (swim and run) and will do it low carb, but cannot confirm that a banana will not be consumed between events. We are camping there tomorrow night and alcohol will be consumed. Have packed enough food to feed a small army - boiled eggs, low carb sausages, and baby bels feature, but have also prepared a billion rounds of ham/cheese sandwiches, and have pork pies, sausage rolls and Cornish pasties. Maybe tomorrow can be my carb fest a la mark sissons.....

Today have had:

B: Greek yoghurt, berocca, cup of decaf tea
L: celery stick, salami, slice of ham, 2 boiled eggs, 1 sausage
Tea: thick slices of roasted gammon ham, with broccolli and leeks and cabbage cooked in butter
Snacks: 1 very weak g&t with slimline tonic, 1 pkt pork scratchings, 2 decaf coffees with cream
Exercise: 20 lengths of pool and ran a mile - didn't want to do the full distance the day before.

Anyhoo...bring on BOOTCAMP. Grin

thanks BIWI, yep, prob need to up my fat intake Smile and will reduce my portions by a third, I think.

am exercising like a loon at the moment, and have a fab personal trainer (he's not MINE, per se, I just go to his circuits classes which are amazing) and he's full of wisdom which I shall share as the weeks go on - I'm always texting him to find out what I should/shouldn't be eating! BTW - he says that bananas shouldnt be eaten UNLESS it's right after exercise, as they cause such a blood sugar spike.

As for the carb/alcohol fest...just the booze here Blush

You shouldn't be eating bananas at all!

BIWI I wanted to asked a question about high level activity and low carbing. How do you ensure that you have enough calories and avoid bananas and muesli type bars. I have a stupid schedule which means high energy, long hours for one day/wk. I have considered the low carb way but tbh am struggling with the nutrition vs exercise thing. Have just enforced the must consume X minimum required calories thing which has helped (resulting from another thread on here) Is there a way to low carb when you have exercise expenditure of 2000 calories in one go without massive low blood sugar drops during the training session?

NewStart - it is very possible to train/exercise on a low carb diet, but it does take time for your body to adjust. The initial two week period of Bootcamp (which is the strict phase) is the time during which your body will become ketogenically adapted, i.e. it will switch from burning carbs to burning fat for its fuel. During this transition period you may not feel great generally, (although how bad you feel will depend on how many carbs you have been consuming/how dependent you currently are on carbs), and you may find your normal level of exercise more difficult.

What are you doing during that four hours - and why four hours?!

I can happily eat my own body weight in sugar and i tbh i think there is more caffine then blood in my vascular system. I did have success will killing the sugar cravings when i did south beach a while back but gave up when I got pregnant and hypermesis took over my life. Ds is nearly 8 there is no excuse anymore and I want to kill the sugar cycle.

Well Bootcamp will definitely help you with that! But prepare to feel pretty ropey for the first 3 or 4 days.

What is your exercise and how often are you doing it?

It is on average anywhere from 10-25hrs /wk. Flexibility work, stamina work, speed work, balance work. This week is quiet as I have an injury flare up so 4hrs of stamina/speed work and 2hrs flexibility work. Next week I need to up it to min of 4 and 4. will probably keep it like that for a couple of weeks tbh. Last week I have 20hrs of speed/stamina kinda stuff and 1 hour of flexibility work. I am trying to jig the training schedule to find what works. SO it is a bit unpredictable. Plus i tend to comfort train and then treat myself to something sweet/nice because i have done so much training and can afford the calories. MFP has been frightenly enlightening. Blush

Here is a recipe for a low carb-ish egg and bacon mcmuffin without the mc or muffin:

Fry one rasher of smoked back bacon, cut into two pieces
Fry one egg
Put the pieces of bacon in the centre of a plate, one on top of the other
Top with a slice of plastic orange cheese (the lowest carb one you can find)
Squirt some American mustard on top and a dab of tomato ketchup

Probably not great for Bootcamp, but on Bootcamp Light at the weekend it's fab, junky treat!
