Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

OP posts:
captainmummy · 21/09/2012 15:10

My DP was persuaded to join me Low-carbing to lose his paunch and has lost 5KG in 5 weeks or so. He has now decided to 'adapt' the diet to suit himself - ie porridge or banana for breakfast, and mashed potatoes at lunch. I then give him a low-carb dinner (the only meal I cook him) and he thinks he is still going to lose weight! He justifies it by saying he's stopped sugar in tea (!) and potatoes are 'natural', not processed or sugary.

Doesn't matter how many times i explain the difference between low-carb and low-cal...

WillieWaggledagger · 21/09/2012 15:32

yes captain dp's father is v v overweight and snacks on lots of sugary things and i said to dp that i thought low carb might suit his father, but that he prob wouldn't be happy about giving up fruit

dp suggested that his dad could do low carb but still include fruit, not understanding that that would mean he would still have blood sugar highs/lows, would likely still experience carb cravings, and would be in danger of eating a high fat/high carb diet!

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/09/2012 15:57

willie it would probably be better than what he is having now. Last year I lost two stone by having porridge for breakfast, a banana and an apple as my snacks in day, then salad or soup for lunch and meat/fish and veg for tea. I didn't have as much fat in my diet as I do now I have fewer carbs, but even cutting out the bread t lunch and then rice/pasta/potato element at dinner and no rubbish sugary things made a massive difference. I know everyone's body is different, for me I know that small amounts of fruit affect my blood sugar swings less than say pasta or rice, but I also know potatoes for me make them go crazy and will always need to be avoided/heavily moderated. Sorry I'm waffling, but what I'm trying to say is - if his diet is very crb heavy and he already eats fruit anyway then cutting down on his carbs might start I make a difference and then he might buy into it more fully after seeing changes and feeling better if
That makes any sense!!!

vnmum · 21/09/2012 16:27

BIWI I have tried them with cauli/broccoli cheese and they still wouldn't eat it. They will eat stir fry veg but it usually contains alot of beansprouts which aren't good when you are meant to be avoiding legumes.

captainmummy · 21/09/2012 16:34

Willie/MrsHP - he has lost a lot and is now trying to lose the last few kgs, but it doesn't help that he eats a cooked lunch at work (justifies it by saying its a physical job) and dinner, but says he will not eat wheat/sugar/rice/other starches (than potatoes) but he does want fruit. (so do I, come to that, have't had an apple in months)
But then I told him about the 6.1 fasting I've started and he wants to try that to, for the health benefits, (having 600 cals one day a week) but then he started saying 'of course i'll adapt it to suit me' - by which he means he won't fast at all.

captainmummy · 21/09/2012 16:36

Vnmum - how about soup? Mine only eat sweetcarn, but will be persuadedby soup (chicken with veg and noodles; tomato;pea and ham;roasted red pepper is a fav when I can afford the peppers!)

TellMeLater · 21/09/2012 17:13

vnmum mine will eat lots of veg in its raw state like carrots, cauliflower, broc, red pepper. They love peas and edamame. I fine chop veg for chillis and bolognaise. They like soups - cauliflower, pumpkin, tomato & basil, celery, minestrone is always a success.

PrincessSparkle86 · 21/09/2012 18:57

WillieWaggledagger · 21/09/2012 19:35

Medal, my hair Has gone through Phases in the past where it falls out but did notice it started falling out again after low carbing. My husband has commented on it (and he never notices anything.!) have got to the point I can see the outline of my skull whe the light is behind me. Wonder if there is a genetic component? My mum has very fine hair.

MsRinky · 21/09/2012 20:28

Put it behind you PrincessSparkle! It's so hard not to seek comfort from food.

I've had a nightmare day at work, and had a major wrangle with myself when I got home not to give in to the urge to open a bottle of wine. Then up popped an e-mail offering me an XXL pizza delivered for only £9.99. How my finger didn't click it I don't know.

I didn't open the wine. I had a nice long shower and then I chargrilled some lemon and thyme chicken thighs. I'm not hungry but I still have a nagging urge to eat. I know logically I am pissed off and upset and that chocolate will not fix it, but it's really hard. The scales had better be kind to me this week, I have had willpower of steel.

Thegoddessblossom · 21/09/2012 20:51

Well I DID open the wine - it's Friday. I have NOT STOPPED today. I know you are all entralled so I will share:

SharonGless · 21/09/2012 20:52

Hi everyone I still can't decide what to name change to
Had a good day on the food front.

B cheese and mushroom omlette
L Greek yoghurt and blueberries as wasn't hungry
D bolognaise sauce with courgette strips

Snacks pistachio nuts and rolls of ham with Philly

I have also been to the gym today so feel much better.

Princess - I had a couple of days like that. It is hard to break the psychological link between food and comfort. Have you read the IPD book? I find tht if I start eating emotionally I reread the chapter in there and it helps to get me back on track.

Drink plenty of water- tomorrow is a new day

Well done MsRinky- impressive stuff. Fingers crossed for weigh in

PrincessSparkle86 · 21/09/2012 21:37

Thanks sharon no i havent read it.. Whos it by?
Its ironic really cos im stressed because i have a child who wont eat.. Then theres me stuffing my face!! X

SharonGless · 21/09/2012 21:48

Why won't your DS eat?
It's by India Knight and Neris Thomas.
You might be able to get it from the library

SharonGless · 21/09/2012 21:49

It's called the idiot proof diet and is very much like bootcamp

PrincessSparkle86 · 21/09/2012 22:08

Thanks sharon ill have a lookout for it.
Such a nightmare with DS... Hes gone from taking hour to an hour and a half and getting extra fussy with dinners to not eating his packed lunches, and then tonight we caught him trying to feed his dinner to his brother on the sly! Ive spoken to his teacher to see if the school can encourage him a bit more at lunh time... Well c what happens next week! Ive said if he doesnt eat ill have to take him to the doctors :/

Thegoddessblossom · 21/09/2012 22:16

Tea: 2 pkts pork scratchings, 2 baby bels, handful of Brazil's. nil points for effort. Sad

SharonGless · 21/09/2012 22:22

Princess does he do it every day?
This isn't a criticism at all but is there a big battle over meals? How is his height /eight ratio?

Sometimes it's helpful to take a step back and look at their eating over the week rather than daily.
Have you asked Hv for help or is he too old?

SharonGless · 21/09/2012 22:22

BLOSS!
And alcohol?

PrincessSparkle86 · 21/09/2012 22:33

Yes everyday. No not a big battle i just dont give him alot on his plate and i give him foods i know he likes to make it easier... He knows hes meant to eat it all, especially if he doesnt eat lunch. I also say if he doesnt eat his dinner i wont get him sweets the next day... I dont need to keep repeating it to him either.

PrincessSparkle86 · 21/09/2012 22:34

Hes 7 and wears 5-6 clothes, hes the smallest in his class.

SharonGless · 21/09/2012 22:45

It must be really hard for you. Food is such an emotive subject.
Especially where children are concerned.

I hope you ate getting the appropriate support

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/09/2012 22:53

Princess that sounds tough - is he any better if he helps make/cook something? Worth taking him to GP if worried, there were some programmes on TV about a year ago about children and eating and they all required different approaches, but all came through it in the end - can't remember what it was on though.

Sharon is your current MN name chosen for a reason? Might help us find you some inspiration?
