Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

I've just logged my celeriac chips on MFP and it came up with 9g/100g! Don't think that can be right. Still under 30g for the day (yesterday) so not bothered.

Cooked the chips in the oven in cayenne-flavoured oil - don't they crisp up? I was waiting for them to crisp like potato, but they didn't. Maybe oven not hot enough? (200C) Anyway, had them with steak, broccolli and mushrooms in cream - lovely.

Weighed today, am 0.6kg down - about 1lb. Happy with that.Grin

BIWI · 16/09/2012 11:31

sybil - happy birthday for tomorrow Thanks

I was reading through some of the old threads yesterday, and I was really struck by just how knowledgeable people are, as well as how supportive and helpful. I was very humbled by it. I never imagined that Bootcamp - set up to get me on track for a couple of weeks - would have ended up like this!

So Thanks to you all.

Hi all, looks like some great losses here! I have not had a great loss.. In fact, am 4 lbs up - eekk.. Its a right pain.. Have been sticking to low carb eating, but have had 2 big weekend events, and also drank at least one large glass of wine every night. Looks like drinking wine doesn't suit me, weight loss wise. Damn shame, cos I love it!

Funny thing is that clothes still fit well, and am still feeling good, so although I am going to cut wine out this week to shift the lbs, I am not too bothered... It's so nice to have finally broken the addiction to carbs that I still feel like its working!

Hello

Can I join you all, please? I've been reading a lot about this WOE and it makes a lot of sense, although I'm having a hard time adding fat! Old habits die hard.

I started last Tuesday and I've lost 2.3kg so far (prob. mostly water) but my clothes definitely feel a bit looser. I do have a few questions which I hope you can help with:

  • is the suitable for significant weight loss? Unfortunately, I have about 6 stones to lose! (I am ashamed to write that down)
  • how much dairy is OK? I really like cheese but don't know how much I should eat
  • what about portion control? I can loads (hence the weight I am now!)
  • I'm trying to stick to food with less than 3g carbs per 100g - is this OK?

Thanks for any help Smile

BIWI · 16/09/2012 14:53

Welcome, queribus!

To answer your questions:

  • yes, it certainly is. In actual fact, it is really a WOE (way of eating) that is for better health in the long term. Eating too many (especially easily accessible/digestible) carbs is implicated in obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. You should find that you are able to lose lots of weight on this WOE as it is a much easier way to eat. It will not feel like a diet at all.
  • how much dairy seems to vary from one individual to another. Butter is fine, but cheese, milk and cream you should keep an eye on. Plain (full fat) yoghurt seems better tolerated. You can eat cheese on the WOE, but don't go mad. (Atkins, to give you an idea, suggest restricting it to 3-4 oz a day). You'll have to see what works for you.
  • on this WOE you eat when you are hungry. As long as you are restricting your carbs, and upping the fat, you will be able to eat generous portions of food, especially to start with. As you get nearer your target weight you may need to adjust this. But if you're eating fat:protein:carbs (rather than what you're probably doing now - carbs:protein:fat) you will probably find that you actually get full relatively quickly. And you will feel fuller for longer
  • most of your carbs should be coming from fresh veg and salad. Meat/fish should be unprocessed, in which case you won't need to bother about carb counts, as most is 0 carbs. Avoid too many things where you have to read the label! Having said that, yes, 3-4g carbs per 100g seems a sensible amount.

Don't be ashamed of how much you have to lose. We are all in the same boat here, and some of us have got a lot more than others to lose. It doesn't matter! You will get the same welcome and support.

Oh, and well done on the loss so far! It's the equivalent of 10 packs of butter - and that won't all be water weight, if you've been doing it for almost two weeks your body will be switching into fat burning mode.

dollyxdaydreamer · 16/09/2012 14:58

Thanks Biwi. I'm 5'4" and weigh 9st 3lbs ish - I know that looks ok on paper but the reality is I'm small-framed and have a big spare tyre. I'm not too bothered about the scale as such, my main concern is doing something about my midriff. It's slowly expanded over the past 20 years and I don't want to end up with central obesity (though my waist measurement is not far off already!) and all the health risks associated with it. Plus I want to look my best!

Salad dressing - usually I just dress in a teaspoon of olive oil, or nothing at all (rely on the fat in the cheese). Don't use balsamic. I'm guessing my salads aren't fatty enough.

Yy to getting out of the snacking habit. It's a comfort eating thing.

No one has mentioned cheese - can I be reasonably greedy with this?

Yeah the levels do confuse me hazchem. Marks daily apple also says up to 100 I think(?) for weight loss. Surely I'm not going over that with what I'm eating? Would it be the case that if you kept it this high you would still lose fat but it would be very slow?

Hi queribus. Some good questions you ask there, I'm new to this too so will be keeping an eye out for answers.

Thegoddessblossom · 16/09/2012 14:59

Lunch was eclectic to say the least.....spring greens, chunk of cheddar, 2 slices of salami, 2 mouthfuls of coleslaw before I realised it was waaaaaay out of date, and some Brazils.

HumphreyCobbler · 16/09/2012 15:02

it is amazing how my insomnia comes back the MINUTE I eat refined carbs and sugar.

queribus · 16/09/2012 15:05

Thanks so much for the reply, BIWI

The WOE has been OK so far except fot evenings when I'm used to snacking on crisps, cheese & biscuits, but no wobbles so far. Really good advice about not eating things where you have to read the label - I hadn't thought of it like that!

Fish and seafood make up an awful lot of my protein intake - I love fish!

I guess I should be adding salad dressings to my lunchtime salad - are they any recipes or suggestions for dressings?

Thanks again

BIWI · 16/09/2012 15:06

Ah, dolly. I have the same problem as you. My torso is still where the excess fat wobbles!

You do need to up the fat. I know it seems counter intuitive! Cheese is OK as long as it's not in massive quantities, but as I said to Queribus, everyone seems to be different in regard to dairy.

Re levels, if you're doing strict Bootcamp I would guess we're aiming for around 20g per day (although I don't advocate counting, as I think it's easy to get too obsessed about this); Dr Charles Clark says 40-60g carbs per day.

vnmum · 16/09/2012 15:12

welcome queribus
I will try and answer your questions.

  1. yes it is suitable for weight loss, keeping your carbs less than 30g a day will have you in ketosis and burning body fat Smile
  1. Some people are ok with dairy and others find it impedes weight loss. It seems to be a bit trial and error to find a suitable level for yourself. On induction Atkins recommends 4oz a day of cheese and 30 to 45g of double cream a day. Some people can have more than this and still lose, some people less
  1. The idea is not to count calories or portion size. As long as your carbs are kept low you eat until you are full. If you are including enough fat in your meals you will usually feel full quite soon so won't be able to eat massive portions. When you first start it is important to eat as much as you think you need to keep hunger at bay but as the weeks go on and you are in ketosis you will find that you won't need to snack as much and won't need as big meals.
  1. Yes that is fine. here are the rules and allowed veg we follow
vnmum · 16/09/2012 15:17

cross posts with BIWI who explained it much better than I Smile

Humphrey There was a food festival near me today too. Didn't go though as I knew I would be tempted by all the delicacies I wouldn't usually eat Smile

Welcome queribus
You will get loads of support on here and we are starting Bootcamp proper on 1st October.
Dh and I are doing no alcohol November in an attempt to detox before Christmas, this is our 4th year of doing it. It will fit in nicely with Bootcamp. Howber I have got to cut it short a little as I have two hen dos one on3rd and one on 30th November!

Just back from Sainsburys which had been looted and pillaged of all vegetables. Manage to get broccoli, kale and carrots to go with the breast of lamb which is in slow cooker currently. Better crack on as still homework for DS, revision for me and school uniform to iron

AuntieMaggie · 16/09/2012 16:30

Afternoon ladies

So we're off on holiday this week via ferry and long drive - can you help me plan a low carb picnic to take?

BIWI · 16/09/2012 16:40

Hard boiled eggs
Cooked (low carb!) sausages
Ham/smoked salmon rolls, stuffed with cream cheese
Olives
Cheese
Sliced cucumber
Celery - with pate/dip/peanut butter (whichever you prefer!)
Tuna mayo, with lettuce leaves to wrap it in (keep them separate until you're eating them, otherwise they will go soggy!)
Roasted chicken drumsticks

OP posts:
MrsHerculePoirot · 16/09/2012 17:11

Queribus I also have many stones to lose (about 5/6). I hear you about snacks in the evening - I have pork scratchings, pâté on celery or cucumber, babybels, cold low fat sausages or cooked chicken drumsticks. For me I think I'm not hungry initially but my brain is rebelling as it thinks 'diet' because I'm thinking about my food. After a week it so of allowing myself to snack I think my brain gets over it and I don't get that snacking craving if that makes sense! I also try to drink lots of water Ot have peppermint tea as I don't associate that with snacks.

hazchem · 16/09/2012 17:19

humphrey That is interesting about the insomnia. My mum suffers from insomnia and is eating the WW way at the moment. She awaiting my arrival to try this WOE. Although I suspect the first day or two might see a fair amount of champagne drunk!

dolly I think (but don't know) that once you reach a weight that you are happy with you could have a slightly higher carb intake to maintain you weight. I'm not sure either tea or BIWI have a better idea.

Welcome Queribus the support on this thread is really great! There is loads of clever woman on here.

Auntie Ratatouille is surprisingly tasty cold. My Lazy favorite travel picnic option is to buy a pre roasted chicken and a couple of salad bowls (Cesar would be good just chuck out the crutons) The bonus of this is you don't have to find somewhere to wash out the tuperware.

Thegoddessblossom · 16/09/2012 17:23

Welcome all newbies. If you are like me you will find this thread super marvellous and very helpful and supportive. I would have given up ages ago if it wasn't for this thread.

We have had such a productive day - culled a whole box full of toys in the playroom to make room for new sofa, discussed extension plans, ironed school uniform, loads of laundry, huge tescos shop. I have even found time to read the sundaypapers!

Burgers and veg for tea.

SharonGless · 16/09/2012 17:39

Quick question - kale
Do I fry in butter?

AuntieMaggie · 16/09/2012 17:55

Thank you :)

AuntieMaggie · 16/09/2012 17:56

Yes Sharon you can

dollyxdaydreamer · 16/09/2012 18:54

Today I have had

Brunch - 3 egg omelette with mushrooms (fried in butter) and spinach and a healthy bit of cheddar

Dinner - Roast beef and gravy, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and roast celeriac

Drinks - loads of water. Glass of white wine
Snack has been 1 small square of 85%

According to MFP this comes in at 62g Carbs and a fat:protein:carb ratio of 56:27:17.

I'm quite shocked I've managed to put away 62g of carbs considering I don't feel like I've eaten anything particularly carby. I guess this just goes to show you that they do soon add up, and I need to be super careful Sad

queribus · 16/09/2012 19:01

Thanks for the welcome, everyone.

MrsHerculePoirot - peppermint tea sounds like a good idea. I've just got into the habit of flopping onto the sofa once the kids have gone to bed. I'm not hungry, just eating for the sake of it.

Curiously, I snack less when I watch food programmes - Australian Masterchef at the moment.

Dinner tonight will be salmon, mackerel, courgettes and green beans. Leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
