We could keep chatting here until someone starts a new proper thread...

Well done MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe and have a fab holiday x

SingingTunelessly · 27/08/2012 09:20

fufulina i didn't make a white sauce but layered bolognese sauce, spinach, emmenthal slices, repeat, finishing with meat layer. Lots of sliced mozzerella then grated parmesan. Cooked for about 45 mins until it was browned and crispy and bubbling. I used frozen spinach and squished it well to get rid of the excess water. God it was delicious.

sybilfaulty · 27/08/2012 09:29

Morning ladies Smile

Wow, MissBehiving, well done on your fab weight loss. Hope you have a wonderful time.

Am looking forward to having a Christmas bootcamp. I didn't weigh today as tomorrow is the start of the new regime, so wine etc still allowed today. I am not actually back at work til next week but would like to make a dent in the scales before then. WE have a very busy weekend though which involves eating out twice at people's houses, so it might be hard to LC discreetly. It's my birthday in mid September and I would very much like to be in good nick for then.

Re reviewing rules etc, I am happy to put my views out there. I would still like to have the weekly threads though, if possible, and am happy to take turns in starting if anyone likes. If we continued our chat on FB, that might exclude other new people who are only starting to see the low carb light. In addition, many people (inc me) can't use FB at work, and I do like to have a read of the news from the thread whilst I eat my lunch. There are always Christmas weight loss thread, plus the various cliques keep starting their own threads, so I can't see how we can annoy people in terms of volume. If you aren't interested in the topic, I expect you would either hide it or just ignore them. The weigh in thread was a great one (thanks Fiddle for the spreadsheet) but perhaps that could be a rolling one rather than a weekly one?

Off out for a picnic today then attacking my kids' head with the nit comb! Yeuch. How did we catch head lice in the holidays? The mind boggles.

Have a wonderful ABH, everyone Smile

BIWI · 27/08/2012 09:32

I agree with you, sybil - and I also feel that moving away on to FB is somehow not in the MN spirit somehow. Although I've still ended up on a number of MN-related FB groups anyhow Smile.

Good idea re the rolling weigh-in thread though. We could just post the link as a reminder each Monday/weigh-in day.

BIWI · 27/08/2012 09:33

As part of reviewing the 'rules', I've been doing a bit of Googling, and I came up with this list of 'success factors', which were posted on the LivinLaVida Low carb blog. It's obviously American, but I thought it was really interesting nevertheless. See how many of these apply to you:

"OBSERVATIONS ON WHAT WORKS"
by Michael Kirtley

I would like to preface this by saying I?m not a dietician or a ?health expert." I am just someone who has talked with thousands of people who have come through the door here at our store in the past couple of years. Some have been successful -- others have not, but there are some similarities that are present in almost all of the success stories, whether the goal was weight loss, blood sugar control or better health. So I thought I would share with you some of the comments that I hear repeatedly from the people who have had the most success.

  1. They rarely, if EVER say, ?I did it following a ?modified plan? or ?my own version? of a plan?.
  2. They read labels, and know what the ingredients are.
  3. They are informed about their plan, they understand how it works and why.
  4. They count all carbs, except fiber.
  5. They don?t pay much attention to dietary cholesterol.
  6. They rarely use products with sugar alcohols, and when they do, they prefer Erythritol or Xylitol.
  7. They exercise.
  8. They don?t really count calories. They just eat until they are full (not stuffed).
  9. They choose their carbs wisely.
10. They don?t pay much attention to fat, but they do avoid trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils). 11. The majority of what they eat is meats, vegetables, nuts, cheese, eggs, berries, and some fruits. It?s interesting to note that many of these foods don?t require a nutritional label. 12. They drink lots of water. 13. They take supplements daily. 14. During their weight loss they were at 20-40 carbs per day. 15. They prepare most meals at home. 16. They can tell you exactly how many carbs they eat per day. 17. They don?t consider it a ?diet?; it?s just how they choose to eat. 18. They picked a specific plan, read the book, and followed it. 19. They don?t ?go on and off of it? depending on the circumstances or when it?s convenient. 20. They know their ?carb equilibrium?, which is the number of carbs they can eat per day and not gain or lose weight. 21. They don?t skip meals. 22. They eat foods with nutritional value, not ?empty calories.? 23. When you ask them if it was difficult, they say ?Not after the first few days.? 24. They take it seriously. 25. They eat several times a day. 26. If a product disappears from the marketplace, they just find something else that works. 27. They keep track of what they eat during the day. 28. They have been criticized by an uninformed person. 29. They plan meals ahead of time. 30. They aren?t too concerned about sodium. 31. They notice the ?serving size? on packages. 32. Not one has ever said ?I did it with carb blockers?, (or any other type of magic pill, potion or formula). 33. They are very creative in preparing foods. 34. If they have ?fallen off the wagon? or ?splurged?, they don?t make excuses or blame anyone, they just get back on their plan ASAP.

I agree new thread each week - alternative could be fortnightly instead but I think each week good. Just one rolling thread for weighing I think like has been suggested.

Re the rules, I need to re-read them but could they be condensed to 5 maybe? And perhaps link to the carblife website with the carb counts of everything rather than list the veg to keep is slightly shorter? Obvs you can say stick to veg under 3 g / 100g or something...

These are just my thoughts though, whatever you do I am happy with and VERY grateful for!!!!

OP posts:
BIWI · 27/08/2012 09:59

Thanks MrsHP. I think I need to look at the carb counts too, given QS's criticism of them. There does seem to be a lot of variability in carb counts generally, but if I post a list of allowed veg, then we need some reassurance that they are correct!

Jacaqueen · 27/08/2012 10:46

Welcome back to all the holiday makers.

Winter seems to have arrived in Central Scotland this morning so my thoughts are definitely turning to Christmas weight loss.

I lost 2 lbs this week. It was a massive 5lbs on Saturday morning, but a weekend at the beach which included half a white flesh peach and a few nibbles, put paid to that. Hopefully a few strict low carbs days will see the scales return to 12 st 9lbs.

BIWI · 27/08/2012 10:52

Gosh, Jac, you are doing so well!

Jacaqueen · 27/08/2012 11:00

Well you say that BIWI but I started on 16th April at 14st 11lbs and now weigh 12st 12. No doubt about it losing almost 2 stone is fantastic. However I lost the first stone within a few weeks and I have spent the last 16 weeks or so losing and gaining the second stone.

I really want to get my head down and get rid of the rest of this weight by Christmas. Another 2 stone would be great.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 27/08/2012 11:19

Up 0.5 lb this week (10 stone 2), but it was a v bad week so I'm lucky it's as little as that! I want to see a 9 appearing in the next 2 weeks!

I love the idea of a LBD Bootcamp! I'll be going back to work after mat leave at the beginning of Jan so want to be slim and sexy for Christmas. Also, DD will be 6 months in 2 weeks and I'll start weaning her, which I understand is a danger-point for weight gain.

That's a v interesting list, BIWI! A lot of it sounds familiar, especially the creative cookery bit. I need to exercise, though.

On the threads - I'd rather stay on MN, because I'm not very good at FB and it's blocked at my work too (not that I'm at work atm, but still!). What about 2 rolling threads - one for chat and one for weigh-ins, and just start a new one when the old is finished? Put links to the spreadsheet every Monday and be done with it?

vnmum · 27/08/2012 11:28

3/4 lb off since last monday for me. I can't find the spreadsheet so haven't updated last weeks or this weeks weights on there.

fufulina I just use butter, cream and cheese in my bechamel sauce, with some nutmeg to flavour. I just add the cheese to taste and use some arrowroot powder (found in tesco for less than a pound) to thicken if needed.

I think a rolling weigh in thread is a good idea, would a rolling chat thread work also? Just posting until thread is full.

Jins · 27/08/2012 11:41

Wrt to the lasagne I don't make a bechamel. I mix grated cheddar or other cheese into cream cheese and stick a dollop on top. You can spread a thin layer onto the emmenthal for the layers.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 27/08/2012 11:49

Tried Level 2 of the Shred - owww! Luckily was interrupted by the baby two-thirds of the way through and had to stop. Will try again when DH gets home.

cardoon · 27/08/2012 11:50

Pleeeeease don't go! I don't post much but I do take it all in and reading your accounts helps enormously.

Have gone off the rails the last couple of days and need new Bootcamp to re-focus ASAP!

2 rolling threads seems the simplest way to go...no?

BIWI · 27/08/2012 11:53

OK - I get the message! No Facebook group. Grin

I'm glad, actually. I prefer it here.

Ilovemyteddy · 27/08/2012 12:31

No to FB group from me, either (mainly because I don't want to 'out' myself on FB, given that I have posted on MN about topics of a sensitive nature!)

Yes to two rolling threads (one chat, one weight-loss spreadsheet please)

Jac you really are doing brilliantly. I know how hard it is after that initial big weight-loss to see the pounds coming off in ounces, and sometimes not at all. Especially if you are basically eating the same things every week and sticking to the rules. I'll join you in getting our heads down to lose the rest of the weight we want to lose by Christmas (1stone 9lbs for me.)

And, because I don't say this enough Thanks to BIWI for starting the Bootcamp, and for continuing to inspire us and encourage us.

Although I started this WOE before Bootcamp, the thought of 'fessing up on the spreadsheet every Monday morning keeps me pretty much on the straight and narrow Grin

SingingTunelessly · 27/08/2012 12:34

Yes agree re the rolling threads. Just keep on posting until each is full rather than starting new ones every week.

BIWI · 27/08/2012 12:35

OK. Two rolling threads it is.

Now for the rules ...

Ilovemyteddy · 27/08/2012 12:41

I love that 'Observations on what works' list BIWI. So true, particularly the "they have been criticized by an uninformed person" (although I read it as uniformed person at first Confused Grin

Is there a spreadsheet at the moment? I only lost 0.4lb last week, so have a bit of work to do before I go on hol on Friday, as I wanted to be 168 and am 170.8 atm. Still - lowest weight I have been for over 20 years so can't complain... Smile

BIWI · 27/08/2012 12:43

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

What do we all feel about this? Given all the recent stuff about intermittent fasting, I'm wondering if 3 meals a day is worth recommending?

Why is it important/worth keeping:

  • encourages 'proper' eating and ensures that those new to LCing don't just rush into a 'diet' and start restricting food, because this will also restrict calories (which we don't count)
  • will also encourage stable blood sugar levels
  • will stop people getting hungry and thus considering cheating
  • focuses on breakfast which is (usually) within our own control, so good/appropriate LC choices can be made, whereas lunch may be more complicated/difficult; with a good LC breakfast inside us, we are more easily able to resist any high carb temptations at lunchtime, and/or delay eating until we can find something suitable

Why might we amend it:

  • if you're not hungry, on this WOE, do we really need to eat? The IF stuff would suggest not
  • some people do find it difficult to eat breakfast, and there's no point forcing it, or making yourself feel ill if you don't want to eat
  • too many people think very narrowly about what constitutes breakfast; I've read many posts from people who have given up on LCing saying that this has what has put them off "sick of the sight of eggs" is a common complaint!

How should we amend it:

  • perhaps this should be a rule for Bootcamp only (i.e. the first two weeks), which will encourage stable blood sugar levels. After this, it could be left up to the individual?
  • maybe it should be changed totally to 'eat whenever you are hungry'?
Ilovemyteddy · 27/08/2012 12:50

I always eat breakfast, but often find that I'm not hungry at lunchtime and eat almost for the sake of it (to stave off the inevitable 3pm munchies!)

I think you have to know what works for you, so maybe start Bootcamp with three meals a day, until you get into this WOE when you can adapt it to suit yourself (and maybe make sure that you have LC snacks on hand in case of an attack of the munchies) because there is so little food that you can buy if you are out/at work that is low-carb.

I have to say that on the days where I don't eat lunch my weightloss is no different to the days where I do eat lunch, so I think it's important that you learn to listen to your own body and what it wants.

SingingTunelessly · 27/08/2012 12:52

BIWI, that's a good to idea to say 'eat whenever you are hungry'. I found it easy to eat three meals a day when I first started LCing but couldn't manage it now. When I started to lose my appetite I had a bit of a panic about slowing my metabolism until you lovely lot on here reassured me.

I think a mention of carb flu happening at some point in the first week usually is worth a mention. I know it took me by surprise.

Oh and agree with Teddy you deserve some more Thanks for doing such a great job. Smile

fufulina · 27/08/2012 14:20

singing, vnmum and jins thank you! I shall try it. Very excited.

I say no to FB, only because I am a technical dinosaur and don't understand FB too well. Also, I don't want to out myself!

BIWI, I thought that list was so interesting, especially the one about most food you eat not actually needing a nutritional label. That is definitely what's changed in this house. We eat far more fresh food, and far less processed.

I thought the rules were great, and I agree that for bootcamp, the three meals a day is really sound advice to avoid getting ravenous and the sugar cravings overwhelming you. But also completely agree that once you're in the zone, not eating if not hungry, and crucially, not eating 'by the clock' is both liberating and good for the scales!

I also think that the ten rules address the key things required. There is so much contrary to existing 'healthy diet' advice, that I think they are worth repeating. Especially the need to eat lots of fat so that you feel satisfied and actually enjoy your food. The fat stops the food being a little joyless, and is crucial to the physiology if I understand correctly.

Well done on the weight loss everyone.

NigellasGuest · 27/08/2012 14:39

I agree - eat regular meals in Bootcamp, but then progress to following your own individual body's needs..... hopefully becoming more in tune with your body as you progress.
