We could keep chatting here until someone starts a new proper thread...

Vezzi I think this being fat is a strange all-pervading psychological downer which strongly effects apparently unrelated areas of your life is so true.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/09/2012 17:57

Have you seen the school lunch thread?

They have banned hard cheese and suggested low fat cream cheese as an alternative

Arghh.....

Someone says on there that the School Food trust suggests low fat hummous as a healthy option.

I really despair Angry

Has this WOE significantly influenced the way anyone else feeds their DC? I never could have given them low fat anything, but I have now significantly increased their fat content. I am sure it have improved their behaviour. It certainly has improved mine!

HumphreyCobbler · 06/09/2012 17:58

I should say increased the fat content of their diet Grin

vnmum · 06/09/2012 18:02

humphrey As per my post earlier, I have changed my DC diet. We started about a month ago with cutting out wheat and other grains although they do still have porridge in a morning when we don't have time to cook them eggs etc and it doesn't seem to affect them too bad.

The interesting thing is that both myself and DH have commented on how their behaviour has changed and how they seem more chilled and that we don't find ourselves having to shout at them as much. They are also getting on better between themselves and not fighting as much. All this happened after we cut out the wheat and sugar.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/09/2012 18:05

thanks vnmum - I will go and look at that. It makes sense, after all. I know that on the Tinsley House support thread they are suggesting a high protein breakfast for children.

BIWI · 06/09/2012 18:10

vezzie the whole 'being fat' thing is really interesting. It wasn't until I had lost a noticeable amount of weight that I started to buy myself new clothes. And I had a complete revelation - I realised that I had gradually begun to start thinking of myself as 'fat' and buying accordingly. I still can't quite believe that I can buy fitted clothes and not stuff that's loose or smock-like. Discovering clothes in my wardrobe that I can wear again is so, so rewarding! I have been stomping around the boards trumpeting about the brilliance of LC, but sadly people often just don't want to know. To a certain extent I've given up now; you can only have the same argument a certain number of times! I'm glad your work trip went well.

teaandthorazine · 06/09/2012 18:11

Am not going to look on the school meals thread because I know it will make me shouty. The wrongheadedness of it makes me want to scream. Even before low carb I'd never have fed low fat to kids. We NEED fat!

This country's childhood obesity problem has nothing to do with eating bloody cheddar, FFS.

Viperidae · 06/09/2012 18:12

Well I ate two of my teeny tiny mini pork belly slices with salad for lunch and have to say they tasted very nice so all was not lost!

I'm having one of thise days where I just want to eat stuff and I don't know why because I'm not hungry, sad, cross or anything. If I start to eat anything I know I'll not stop so am restraining myself atm.

BIWI That pork recipe looks lovely, I must get my slowcooker out.

NigellasGuest · 06/09/2012 18:23

making the Lamb Bite balls from the recipe thread. Have already given to the DCs - can't wait to eat mine a bit later because I had a little try and they are completely delicious!

I am printing out recipes from the recipe thread and putting them into my new personal LC recipe planner. How exciting!

There is a recipe in Good Food magazine which is LC, and a couple of others that are easily adaptable. Shall I add them to the recipe thread, or the LC recipe section of MN?

BIWI · 06/09/2012 18:28

Could you put it on both?

I suppose we should migrate everything on the recipe thread to the specific section though ...

The pork thing smells lovely, but I'm not sure about how tender it is going to be - and I have to go to my Chinese class now and leave DH to tackle it in my absence. It looks very fatty, which - without being sorted out by me before it's served up - may put both him and DS2 off Hmm

AuntieMaggie · 06/09/2012 18:36

Sooo lunch was 2 chickwn drumsticks coleslaw and salad leaves... the other options were seafood pasta, cous cous, cottage pie, and various pasta and bean salads with cheesecake or fruit for dessert...

I'm being really good and am very proud of myself! I haven't touched the cake, biscuits or fruit at break time. In fact I feel a bit free in that I don't need to eat it just because its there unlike some others on the course....

fufulina · 06/09/2012 18:39

I think it's very hard, once you have bought into LC not to change what you feed your dc, if it was particularly carby before. I have dramatically reduced the amount of bread and pasta my dd1 eats, and she is eating far less sugar.

More green veg, more meat and fish, and her behaviour has changed enormously. She is noticeably calmer, and more serene. Actually how I feel! And it wasn't at all difficult. She hasn't spent a long lifetime rewarding herself with carbs!!

Also, I think people think that because their dc don't eat sweets, they don't get sugar, but they eat a shed load of fruit.... Wich will often have the same physiological effects... I also despair at the low cal advice. Follow the money! You can't sell people broccoli and green bean snacks for lunch boxes!

The IPD cook book arrived, so v excited about trialling some of the stuff. But, it is subtly different to bootcamp, isn't it? Can't think of an example now, but some of the stuff they recommended I would steer clear of, oh yes, lots of butternut squash!

vnmum · 06/09/2012 18:43

oh I hate the school lunch police. Apparently our school tried it but parents didn't comply so they now issue guidelines but don't ban stuff. If they tried taking any of my DC lunch away when they serve up very carb and grain heavy cooked school lunches I would go livid. I would probably give the head some links to mark's daily apple etc. DS went to school today with cold ham/meats, carrot and pepper sticks, full fat mayo for dipping, cold mini sausages, a full fat babybel, an actimel (full fat) and some seed and nut cookie things.

I also hate the way they teach them healthy eating and it is all low fat, wholegrain stuff. I have to tell DS that school are wrong and that what we eat is healthier Smile. I have also told him that if anyone questions wether his packed lunches are healthy he is to reply that "we eat paleo in our family as humans did not evolve to eat grains" would love to see the teachers/dinner ladies faces should he ever say it Grin

TellMeLater · 06/09/2012 19:00

Hi there

I've been low carbing for ages but there is one thing I can't get my head around for bootcamp, fat is unlimited - what happens to the excess dietary fat that we don't use as energy - surely it just joins the rest of the fat in your body? Think Mark Sissons suggests you only increase your fat if you are happy with your weight - mind you primal boy sells processed food like protein shakes, which are hardly primal so I'm not sure how much credibility his carries anyway. Taubes seems to ignore it, Briffa the same and Atkins suggests a limit. Diet Doctor suggests a high fat low carb diet but doesn't explain what happens the excess dietary fat or does he? Did I miss that bit? Confused

vnmum · 06/09/2012 19:49

Hi tellmelater, I didn't realise Atkin's set a limit on fat, I must have missed that when I read the book a while ago although I have seen on the atkins forums of people starting to count calories or lower fat as their weight loss slows down.
As far as I am aware Mark Sissons reccomends that fat is the staple of the diet and doesn't suggest an upper level as both dietary and body fat will be burnt, bearing in mind that fat is filling so you won't consume as much as you might think and also that the fat is powering your entire bodily functions. Mark does say that when you get to a desired weight you can add even more fat as your body won't have the body fat to burn so you give it more energy from fat aswell as increasing carbs slightly.

From my own personal experience, the times I have eaten lots of fat are the times when I have also had a good loss on the scales

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 06/09/2012 20:05

Tellmelater, don't know if this is the scientific reason or not, but it seems to me that it's like water retention. If you don't drink enough you get water retention. Similarly, if you don't eat enough fat your body retains its fat stores. It's the famine-feast thing - everyone accepts that if you starve yourself, your body goes into famine mode and clings onto its fat. Conversely, if you eat a lot of fat your body starts to shed it because it doesn't need to keep it. I think the excess fat is excreted.

Yy, Vnmum - I remember someone saying that if their weight-loss stalled, they ate mushrooms in cream and it kick-started it again.

vnmum · 06/09/2012 20:07

mmmmm mushrooms in cream and boursin Smile

Thegoddessblossom · 06/09/2012 20:10

Tea: mini pork joint stuffed with caramelised apple, I know, but said v low carb on packet - served with buttery mushrooms courgette and leeks.

Snacks: coffee with cream, 2 slices ham, stick of celery with pâté, 1 g&t, 1 glass of red.

TellMeLater · 06/09/2012 20:14

I don't know if everyone accepts the theory of starvation mode - have a google - lots of people think its a myth. I just so much of this stuff is voodoo not science - its people taking from their personal experience and while I accept that every body has different needs and responds differently to foods, I find myself wondering not from a losing weight dieting perspective but from the perspective of a biological process, what happens to the fat that our bodies don't need if we were eating excessive quantities, if I drank a litre of olive oil a day what would happen, apart from me feeling very sick Grin

vezzie · 06/09/2012 20:41

Tellmelater - this is, as you say, just my own experience, but I think it works because you just wouldn't drink a bottle of olive oil, and over all, eating fat leads to fewer calories. I know there is other tricksy stuff talked about with low carb eating and it may or not be true. but in my case it is irrelevant because I don't need it to be true - I just eat much more moderately when my meals include good amounts of fat.

I calorie counted (not restricted, just counted) at first and saw a dramatic drop in calories from before (eating pretty much ad libitum with emphasis on whole foods, changing to low carb)

Briffa talks about studies where low carb eaters who are allowed to eat what they like consume less over time.

I think the key is "over time" though.

halfthesize · 06/09/2012 20:43

Evening all and Happy birthday, fufulina, so many virgo'sGrin

So I went clothes shopping today to try and spend my Birthday money, but there is not much in the shopsSad But still lovely getting an afternoon to myself, child free.

I am just checking out all the recipe's and think I am also going to do a meal plan, its a fab idea nigellasGrin

Dinner tonight was bacon, egg and mushroom.

OrangeEyesDoMoreThanSee · 06/09/2012 20:43

Evening all. Chicken and salad for tea with Mayo. Had some unexpected news today (not in a bad way exactly but in a slightly sad way) so DH has thoughtfully provided some very high cocoa chocolate which I intend to have a square or two of.

Eating seems to be going well, meal plans working out ok, haven't weighed since Monday but feel comfy. Still aiming for 10.10 by Christmas.

OrangeEyesDoMoreThanSee · 06/09/2012 20:43

Happy birthday to everyone, mine is in the depths of winter

TellMeLater · 06/09/2012 20:57

I get the idea that eating high fat leads to you feeling satisfied and I know the idea of drinking a litre of oil is ridiculous but I still want to know what would happen if you consumed more than you needed - sorry for the tmi but do you poo it out?

Btw I tried the cream cheese pancakes from "I breathe...I'm hungry" this morning and they were fabulous....I have her cinnamon Crunch cereal in the oven baking and it smells delicious, I can't wait to try them.

Viperidae · 06/09/2012 21:44

Isn't there some treatment for gall stones where you drink loads of olive oil? I'm sure somebody recommended it for me years ago (not that I tried it!)

I have to tell you I have just had the most gorgeous tea Smile. I went to Sainsburys in search of BIWIs lamb joint and found some little lamb steaks reduced so got those instead. Fried them in butter and olive oil, added chopped mushrooms, boursin and a splash of cream, served it with mashed cauliflower and wilted baby spinach. It was truly yummy.

I am feeling a bit like a lot of you have said when you started out, I can't believe I can eat like this and lose weight. My colleague is doing WW and is really miserable with it - I'm not!
