We could keep chatting here until someone starts a new proper thread...

Happy birthday mrsHP!

Viper - Definitely try a whole pork belly joint, it's much easier to cook than the strips I think. Mine came up lovely last night - had it with creamy garlic mushrooms, green beans and wilted spinach. I did it at 250 for the first 20mins, then 130 for 3.5 hours, and a last quick blast at 250 to really crisp up the fat. Yum!

Have woken with a bit of a headache - not enough water probably. Am in clinic all day with a v helpful student though so no excuses for not drinking plenty AND getting a lunchbreak!

hurricanewyn · 06/09/2012 07:38

Good morning all. Just checking back in after holidays. I started with the best of intentions, but after a couple of weeks of people judging & commenting on every bite that went in my mouth, coupled with going hungry due to lack if low carb choices, I caved. (My hols were a trip to my hometown BTW, this was DM & DSis being the pains). I haven't weighed yet, but I was straight back into Bootcamp(and carb flu ) yesterday. Onwards & downwards.

I haven't read all the thread yet, but I hope everyone's doing ok & a bit better than me Smile

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/09/2012 07:44

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!

BIWI I play at Ricards on a Wednesday night via OneNetball. Used to play in a Saturday league too, but too difficult getting people to play, sort umpires etc... despite having a massive squad so we ditched that last year. Do you play?

Right, I am going to do my best to start again today, but we are going out for my birthday dinner tonight so might not be perfect. However tomorowr really is it, hoping to get half a stone off before bootcamp at least!

Morning.

Happy birthday MrsHP :)

Breakfast was hit and miss - bacon and eggs were gross so I had half a sausage and a forkful of beans before giving up and having yogurt and berries - the yogurt was really nice and creamy and enjoyed it. Think I've been trying the wrong ones!

PrincessSparkle86 · 06/09/2012 08:28

Morning all

mrs hp happy birthday and enjoy ur birthday meal Grin

Breakfast has been missed this morning!
Lunch will be satay chicken breast and green salad with a sprinkle of parmesan!
Dinner: ill decide later on!

BIWI · 06/09/2012 08:38

MrsHP - I haven't played since I was at school, although I loved it then, and used to be in the team - GA was my favoured position. I ask because another friend of mine - initials SP, son called Charlie - is also an avid player, and wondered if it was one of those 'small world' coincidences, and that you know each other?

I'm interested in this whole carb flu thing. Given that I really fell off the wagon on holiday, and that it took me another week to properly get back on the wagon, I haven't experienced this at all. I have definitely been eating low carb this week so far:

Monday
1 poached egg
1 pork chop, fried in butter; mushrooms fried in butter
3 slices lamb breast
Pork fillet, marinated (sesame oil, soy, garlic, ginger, lime juice) pan fried with broccoli, in chicken broth with mushrooms and thinly sliced cabbage
Berocca, 3 litres water, 1 coffee

Tuesday
Yoghurt and vanilla
1 pork chop, fried in butter; mushrooms fried in butter
1 slice lamb breast
3 slices lamb breast, spinach in garlic butter
2 coffees, Berocca, 3 litres water

Wednesday
2 hb eggs mashed with mayo
Yoghurt
Cheese, hb egg mashed with butter
Roast chicken, roasted cauliflower, cabbage in butter
2 coffees, 1 Berocca, 4 litres water

On Monday, once I got home from work, I had to go to bed for a quick kip - I put this down to being the first day back at work, because it seemed too soon for lack of carbs to be having an effect. (I have made sure that I keep my salt levels up, as I'm also drinking a lot of water)

I presume, by now, I must be entering ketosis - or the switch back to burning fat rather than carbs must be happening? Do you think that being a long term low carber makes it easier for the body to switch back from fat to carbs to fat again?

Or - alternative scenario - given that I was in a pattern of low-ish carbs during the week and higher carbs at the weekend, that my body is burning carbs and fat? Does that even happen?!

Anyone got any ideas?!

Thegoddessblossom · 06/09/2012 09:57

Sorry no idea BIWI. I can only presume that carb flu proper happens the first time you introduce this WOE to your system, and it just isn't as impactful again. I have never experienced carb flu myself.

God a headache this morning however.

B: some greek yoghurt, cuppa tea and a Berocca.

Took DS2 in for his first day at his middle school today, he was so excited bless his cottons. Grin

Happy Birthday for yesterday MrsHP Thanks

halfthesize · 06/09/2012 10:47

Happy Birthday for yesterday MrsHP

Sorry to hear about the pork belly strips not going well Viperidae I would def try the joint, it does cook alot betterSmile

Breakfast - coffee
Lunch - omelette and salad

hazchem · 06/09/2012 11:41

Happy birthday MrsHP

I've managed not to weigh in because the scales at the doctors were broken.

I'm eating loads at the moment all off the allowed lists but loads. DS is teething and has basically been feeding for 18 hours a day and fucking night It's hard to be a calm patient mama when you are not sleeping, have dry mouth and are hungry!

I've been having a look into some paleo cookery because I thought it might be a good fit for Low carb. Humm it seams while not having grains and sugar it's really high in fruit and in particular dried fruit. I'm not craving sweet things but would like to make a few baked treats so can share with DS and OH.

PrincessSparkle86 · 06/09/2012 11:52

Slight change of plan to lunch: was the homemade chicken satay with 3 mushrooms fried!

Mid-morning snack was 2 bernard matthews turkey breast slices!

I seriously need to go and do a shop... DP is working 8 days on the trot so i don't know when this will happen :/

EwanHoozami · 06/09/2012 12:53

Getting into the swing a bit now:

Yesterday was...

B: scrambled eggs
L: roast pork slices, bresaola, pate on celery
D: the chicken (thigh) component of a dry-ish curry made with french beans and spinach

I have given my Activia yogs to my next-door-neighbour (who now thinks I'm weirder than ever) but I succumbed to a couple of squares of dark choc.

Am sloshing back water. Have a murderous headache.

going to eat out tonight. yikes..

BIWI · 06/09/2012 13:28

Going out to eat should be OK. Just don't be afraid to ask for your meal without the carb bit - e.g. ask for salad or veg instead of potatoes. Most places are more than happy to accommodate you.

vnmum · 06/09/2012 13:58

Happy Birthday Mrs HP
BIWI Yes I would say that because you have been low carbing for so long that you are keto adapted so your body's preferred fuel is fat and it will switch back to fat metabolism quite easily and quickly. From what I can gather when you are keto adapted your body can switch between carb and fat metabolisms quite easily because fat is preferred and it only burns the carbs first because they are there, when carbs are reduced it just refers back to its preferred fuel of fat.

Hazchem There are quite a few different takes on Paleo. Loren Cordain says paleo is lots of fruit and veg as primary food, with lean protein next then fat, nuts, seeds etc. I think Robb Wolff is the same although I am only half way through his book.
Mark Sissons WOE is called Primal and it differs from Paleo by saying Protein (not lean) should be primary food then vegetables with occasional fruit then nuts, seeds, dairy etc.

I have a childrens paleo book called 'eat like a dinosaur' and their take on paleo is to cut out grains and dairy but they are ok with eating natural sugars so they do make treats with dried fruit and honey etc, whereas Mark Sissons suggests cutting out grains and sugar and only eating dairy if you can tolerate it which I suppose is a more low carb take (although his suggestions for the amount of carbs to eat for weight loss are higher than most low carb plans, 50 - 100g coming from veg etc)

I have taken the Mark Sissons approach for myself and the family but I do allow the children fruit and some baked treats as they probably do need more carbs than I because they do not need to lose weight and are still growing. I just make sure their carbs come from natural paleo/primal sources and if I use any sugar substitute it is usually honey.

There is lots of info on here, look under the primal blueprint info

hazchem · 06/09/2012 14:14

vnmum I was on the eat like a dinosaur site ! The daily apple site looks great. Lots of reading to get through. Yes I'm trying to share my WOE with my son but knowing that he will need more carbs then me. So he gets fruit and blueberries and I just get blueberries. Although trying too limit dried fruit as I think it's not so great for teeth.
I keep meaning to actually track my carb intake for a few days to see where it is because I think I'm probably at the high end of low carb:)

fufulina · 06/09/2012 14:24

Morning all, 75.2kg today, and turned 36 today. Trying to ignore it, to be honest! But a friend made me a chocolate cake, and couldn't say no (actually couldn't, would have been so rude), so had a delicious slice and have been rewarded with my first headache in 7 weeks! I hadn't realised that I didn't get headaches anymore until this one landed like a sodding sledgehammer.

Reason number 865 why this woe is so the way forward for me.

Have good days everyone.

BIWI · 06/09/2012 14:35

Another birthday! Happy birthday, fufulina Thanks Sorry to hear about the headache, but I guess that it confirms for you - if you didn't already know - that chocolate is a trigger.

vnmum thanks for that - that makes me feel much better!

I'm cooking what I hope will be a lovely meal tonight from the marksdailyapple site, slow cooked pork with ginger and coconut milk.

fufulina · 06/09/2012 15:39

You see, chocolate, sugar or the flour?? I think the combo is wot did it! Thanks for the flowers Smile.

Thegoddessblossom · 06/09/2012 16:05

Bon Anniversaire FuFu!!!

Blimey it's birthday central round here.

Lunch: roasted veg, tuna, boiled egg, smoked mackerel fillet, cucumber, lettuce, mayo. (office canteen protein counter rocks)

vezzie · 06/09/2012 16:10

PrincesSparkle, can you shop online?

The work trip wasn't too bad in terms of eating, except for the YUMMY BOUZE. I ordered straight off the menu at a very nice restaurant and had a beautiful marinaded rare tuna with white radish, and then some delicious pink lamb with greens. So no sardines in bed. This time. (Just a big bottle of water after the SB and rioja) The working lunch the next day was kind of ok, I ate the middles out of a slice of pork pie and a slice of quiche, which I hope was not remarked upon as too disgusting as at least it was with a knife and fork. There was not a single vegetable in sight though, but I was home in the evening and made up for it then.
I am now wearing things I haven't worn since early 2010, before I got pregnant again. Not all of them, by any means, but some of them. It is such a relief to think I don't have to be this way for ever.. being fat is a strange all-pervading psychological downer which strongly effects apparently unrelated areas of your life.

I am having an argument in my head about how evangelical to be. I just want everyone to be happeeee.... but I also don't want to be a bossy boots and tell people what to do. I work with someone who always complains about her weight and I am sure she would do well on a low-carb diet. But if she doesn't live in a hole in the ground (she doesn't) surely she must have thought of that already?

vnmum · 06/09/2012 16:37

happy birthday fufu I am 36 in november and I am trying to ignore it too as I still feel and think that I am late twenties Grin. Also hoping with this woe that I will soon have the body I should have had in my twenties rather than being the heifer I was.

hazchem I tend to give my DC fruit, nuts, baked goods made with almond or coconut flour, occasionally gluten free bread made with dove's farm gluten free flour and they also get potatoes but not every day. I also try and keep their fat levels up so have switched them back onto full fat milk and they get cheese and cream in their scrambled eggs, extra butter on veg, salad dressed in oil, mayo etc. My only worry is that they aren't very adventurous with the different types of veg they eat and while they will eat salad happily, they don't seem to like many other cooked veg so they do get a multi vit and mineral supplement.

The eat like a dinosaur book was good for explaining to them why we have changed their diet and to help them be more accountable for their food choices but some of the recipes use offal and i'm not sure they would eat that (i don't like it either).

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 06/09/2012 16:40

Happy birthday, Fufulina, MrsHP and everyone else who has just had a birthday!

BIWI, please can you link to the slow cooked pork recipe? It sounds yummy.

Vezzie, I complained about my weight a lot but low-carb honestly didn't cross my radar until this year. I just assumed that I ought to be eating a low-cal 'balanced' diet. I started with Eat More To Weigh Less, and people on that thread kept recommending Escape The Diet Trap, so I bought it and it was suddenly like a light had been turned on in my head. However, I have learned that many people automatically distrust low-carbing because they assume it must be unhealthy, so perhaps maybe suggest it to your colleague but don't be offended if she doesn't take your advice? I think people are more receptive if they have seen someone close to them do it successfully - my stepmother, who I expected to be wildly negative about the whole thing, was actually enthusiastic because my uncle had low-carbed successfully (which I hadn't known). I got a lot of stick from my friends about 'eating like a caveman', but now the jokes are drying up because it is clearly working. I want to get a friend of mine doing it - she does WW now - but I'm not sure quite how to start. She thinks WW works, even though she's put back on all the weight she lost a couple of year ago - she thinks she just has to stick to it better.

vezzie · 06/09/2012 17:06

Hi Tooimmature - maybe you're right.
One of the weird hang-ups that I have about this WOE is that as I am visibly chubby*, I ought not to be seen eating fat, especially meat, because all good waify girls in the 80s were vegetarian and cared terribly about the little animals. I imagine that people will think "What on earth is that bunter doing eating CHICKEN WITH THE SKIN ON? that chicken DIED FOR HER FAT ARSE" and it makes me feel a bit inhibited. (don't worry - I get over it) This comes from a life-time of weird food messages, and it doesn't go away overnight. So maybe my work friend is the same and is not really ready to hear that eating fat need not be a problem for fat people. But maybe I will say something next time she says, "you're looking trim!" (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE)

  • I also felt the same - visibly chubby - with a bmi of 19
dollyxdaydreamer · 06/09/2012 17:07

Sorry for the massive post, two young DCs make posting more regularly difficult!

Hope everyone's had a good day.

dollyxdaydreamer · 06/09/2012 17:23

PrincessSparkle, is the chicken satay good? I'm supposed to be off garlic and chilli at the moment, but have been drooling at your recipe and it will give me something to look forward to!
