geeklove how are you measuring your body fat percentage? I ask because quite a few of the online calculators are malfunctioning - you can check by reducing your measurements/weight and seeing the impact on the calculated result. I was getting around 30% fat on quite a few, which is clearly bollocks as I'm size 8-10 and fairly fit and 30% fat meant about average on their interpretation tables...there is no way that a person who is fit and a size 8-10 with a BMI of 20 is of average body fat. The machine in Boots faired no better. I suspect quite a few of them may be trying to sell dieting products.
I have given up with body fat measurements - they are just to hard to get right, the best thing to go on is a tape measure or your clothing.
woodlandhills I don't think you should even do the shred 7 days a week, your muscles need time to recover and build, overdoing it can leave you more vulnerable to injury, suggest 1 or 2 rest days a week, you could walk or swim on the rest days if you wanted to do something active.

I'm using a handheld measurement device for bodyfat. I might try online one if anybody has a good one.

As for rest after last week when I was focusing on doing 2x2 circuits from NMTZ I so needed a day off after 4 days on as the fatigue is cumulative. If you don't fancy a complete day off do more cardio. I think it is best to mix things up exercise wise.

Hi ginnifer! Don't worry about the weights others are using, you start where you start. Keep up and it won't be long before you do heavier weights. What you could do is introduce a heavier weight to some of the moves like shoulder press or hammer curls or use a heavier weight and switch to a lighter weight when you reach a limit.
For 30DS you should be using a weight that's around 15 Rm ie 15 reps before failure I reckon.

Hi Ginnifer my weights are 1kg because that's the lightest I could get and they are much too heavy for me. I am so feeble! I don't think I shall ever move on to a heavier weight!

hi everyone and welcome to the new posters.

Well our anniversary weekend away was a bit of a disaster, ended up having to take our DS with us due to babysitting issues - not the most romantic having a 4 yo little boy with you! Worse still, the two day break from exercising seems to have sent me off on a downward spiral. I haven't done anything Monday, Tuesday and all I want to do is eat! I feel really crap Sad. Hopefully is just a passing phase!!

Your birthday tea sounds yummy Sweetkitty!

Greedygirl Left to my own devices I would do nothing but eat on any day Sad Can you be expecting? Wink

Ginnifer I use 2 kg weights but started with 1 kg weights in January, and for things that put pressure on your back like superman, etc. I do not dare to use anything. I always had problems with my lower back.

notyummy How do you do it?!

I had a lovely day at the beach. Away-day with a long walk. I felt very smug, as I could not bring myself to even touch the chips from the chippy (a few years ago I was sick for days after having chips from a chippy and ever since then I am quite wary of them). I got home an hour early so decided to do BFBM. Similarly to MrsSmooth I cannot move now [waves to MrsSmooth while munching on imaginary Green and Blacks]

Gingercat your day sounds lovely Smile

Aw greedygirl, I know exactly how you feel... My downward spirals with food were pretty well documented on a past thread, long-standing 'ishoos' that chose to rear their head again recently. What really helps me is to say well that day is done and dusted, and try not to dwell, think ahead always! Also, getting back into exercise mode really helps too. Hope you are feeling more chipper x

Did my turbo 55 this afternoon. Neck was still stiff and sore so I downed a couple of ibuprofen and whizzed through it...and now it's absolutely fine Hmm. I've done that once or twice before and it always seems to have done the trick, maybe letting go and relaxing? Not a course of action I'd always recommend of course Wink

Hope everyone is doing well Smile

Day 9, L1 shred done!
Actually got through most of it today without having to stop :) Considering I only had about 4 hours sleep last night after another big row with 'D'H, I thought I would find it really tough.

Well done Dawnpreview, impressive on that little sleep, hope you have sorted things with DH.

Gingercat - um, I hope not Grin! Nah, just greedy and grumpy, the worst combination for me.

Thanks for the encouragement Threesteps Smile, I have decided to ban myself from thinking about weight and food and just concentrate on how my clothes feel and feeling happy and healthy. Have been feeling a bit sorry for myself and knackered !

Well I broke the spell and started week 2 of RI30 today. Feel much better for doing something. Found parts if it quite hard going e.g two minutes of plank jacks and mountain climbers but there were bits that I definitely could not have done two months ago. Watch out newcomers it is addictive!

notyummy great idea for learning to do proper push ups by using the graduating difficulty of stairs. I'll move from the sofa back to arm to stairs acheiving 20 reps before moving down - I reckon I can do at least one extra rep a day. Being able to do proper push up will be such a boost to my fitness confidence, it's something I never nought I'd be able to do.

Hi ladies, how many calories do you burn doing L1 shred? Have started using myfitnesspal, so helpful thanks how ever tipped me!

Completed L1 again today, find legs & abs very do-able [wouldn't say east] but arms tough so think I need to drop my weight tmrw.

Report
notyummy · 22/08/2012 12:08

Jollygreen - calories are variable depending on your size and how hard you are working (i.e heart rate throughout.) My friend who has a heart rate monitor that calculates calorie burn found it came out at 187 for her. She ia about 9 1/2 stone and was probably working at about average level.

What do we think about the P90X workout? It is all over the US news, as Paul Ryan does it. (I am quite happy with Jillian, just curious.)

Thought I was Day 9 of L1 but looking back I'm actually Day 10! Don't feel ready to move onto Level 2 yet, maybe I'll do another day of L1 tomorrow then start L2 on Friday.

Glad you're feeling brighter Greedygirl.

Sweetkitty You might be surprised at how good L2 is....I love it.

Well done to all Shredders/Jillianers. I did nothing on Monday as I ached all day and then nothing yesterday as I walked the whole of London with DD instead and had a last minute theatre trip in the evening instead of coming home. Today I am procrastinating but will do wk 1 strength 1 of Body Revolution later. I think I might do alternate day sessions as they are so full-on I ache like mad for days after.

Just curious whats turbo fire like? How does that compare to JM?

Report
GinniferAndTonic · 22/08/2012 19:30

Thanks, very good advice, it makes sense to use different weights for different things. I struggle so much with some of the strength moves that as soon as something feels less difficult I tend to think I must be doing it wrong!

About pushups, which do you think is better: deep but modified (knees), or a less deep but otherwise proper pushup?

Report
threestepsforward · 22/08/2012 21:05

Hmm ginnifer, I'm not sure! I mainly do them on my knees, but I think if you can manage 1 or 2 proper ones in a batch that's good going. Although I use my knees, I make sure I can feel both my core and my arms being worked. I've always been useless at proper pushups!

Geeklove, Turbofire is a lot of fun and does cover things like core etc. but not really on the same DVDs. JM is more comprehensive in that strength, cardio and abs all gets worked in the same workout (for Shred, Ripped etc.).

Turbofire is a fantastic cardio workout, and actually I guess the core is worked a fair bit with lots of knee raises and standing crunches. What I really like are the HIITs in amongst the workouts - which are 1 minute drills where you go all out cardio, then rest for a minute. HIITs are apparently really effective for calorie burning.

It is very choreographed and it took me quite a few gos to get the hang of it... and it is of course very expensive!

I would say it might be a bit iffy if your knees give you problems, as there is a lot of twisting and jumping.

That's a bit of a vague description but ask me anything else you want to (or wait for CHST to come back from holiday and ask her as she has turbofire too and may well explain it better!)

Didn't fit anything in today but did cycle 6 ish miles very slowly

Need to get some more in before I head off on holiday so am thinking of a double JM session tomorrow, if I can manage it, as I haven't done her stuff in ages!

Just did level 3 shred tonight, day 5. It felt easier once I got the first circuit out the way but I'm still struggling with it. I don't think I'll be 'doing Natalie' by day 10, far from it.

I read somewhere that Jillian originally intended that the 30DS should be done for 2 days, followed by a day of cardio, 2 days shred, one cardio, then a rest day? I might try doing that when I finish the 30 days

Report
gypsyfloss · 22/08/2012 21:50

xelliex that's the format her Body revolution takes; 2 days strength working on set areas followed by a cardio day and repeat with one rest day.
