Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Spinach0.8
Celery0.9

Brussels sprouts3.5
French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

hillyhilly · 04/07/2012 16:34

We're not boot camping but I had some great advice here last week about my dh.
I am delighted to reported that mr hillyhilly lost 5lb in his first week and I have lost one sine Sunday ( was a bit slow to get started ), and that is despite a day out at Wimbledon yesterday that put us both a lb on (so it was 6 lost before yesterday!)
Thanks all for great advice, we're getting a bit tired of eggs for breakfast so any other suggestions there would be much appreciated !

mummyduff · 04/07/2012 16:57

Hello to all the newbies great to see you here.

I have to say I loved the Dr Biffa web chat it was greatGrin

I have weighed myself again today as totm and have lost another 1lb wohoo!

Total loss since the beginning is now 16lb and its all thanks to you ladies especially BIWI so a big big Thanks

Thegoddessblossom · 04/07/2012 17:12

Sorry if this throws people off course (BIWI please don't think I am trying to sabotage low carb bootcamp) but there are so many requests for b'fast ideas.........

I partially follow Harcombe, which essentially means I have carbs for breakfast in the form of shredded wheat with skimmed milk (which is the only cereal available with no added sugar - honestly - they even put sugar in bran flakes - you would be amazed) or porridge with water. All my other meals adhere to BIWI's boot camp meals. Following Zoe Harcombe's principles if you leave 3-4 hours between a carb meal (which involves eating unrefined "healthy" carbs) and a fat meal (low carb meal as advocated by BIWI) it is fine. I have been doing this for a month and it has not affected my weight maintenance or brought back any cravings for sweet food or stopped any of the other benefits this WOE afford.

PMMummy · 04/07/2012 17:17

MNP it is an iPhone and it's because I'm now far too lazy to switch the laptop on !!

PMMummy · 04/07/2012 17:22

Frumpet, 6, 5, 4 all irrelevant!!!! Honestly I've enjoyed my first week in this woe so much (and I am a big fat chocoholic and biscuit monster hence why I have 4 stone to lose). And I'm frumpy also - its the 2 under 4 that makes me so !!

CutItOutAndRestart · 04/07/2012 17:28

delurking quickly, Thegoddess have you tried the kalo puffed rice? I had that when doing harcombe. They have it on the Tesco site, not sure how it compares to shredded wheat?

apologies for sneaking in only to talk about carby products Blush

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/07/2012 17:47

Just a quick question is chorizo ok once you're out of the first 2 weeks - quite fancy some in an omelette with rocket . . .

thanks!

MsRinky · 04/07/2012 17:57

I quite often have these for breakfast:

orangette.blogspot.co.uk/2005/03/on-heresy-and-bouchons-au-thon.html

They do have eggs in but aren't very eggy tasting, more like a sort of mousse/pate texture.

I will also confess that my other weekday breakfast staple is almond muffins from the Celia Brooks Brown low carb veggie book, but I don't mention them here because I pretend that I don't touch nuts or Splenda when BIWI is around Blush

becstarsky · 04/07/2012 18:09

What a lovely welcome. I feel right at home already! Thanks for shake links - will def give those a try. I need a 'meal on the run' solution sometimes. Sorry poor vnmum d & v sucks like nothing else - hope everyone is better soon. And tartiflette i have to say I do not miss my tonsils one tiny bit.

I am loving the menu ideas here. I want smoked mackerel pâté on cucumber and I want it now! Dinner here is a decidedly unimaginative chilli with lettuce instead of rice. Good luck all, see you tomorrow.

ILoveStripeySocks · 04/07/2012 18:11

Had a yummy chinese beef stew for dinner tonight, I hope it wasnt carby! It had some soy sauce in it plus 4 tablespoons of dry sherry. I drained the sauce off my portion too, and the whole thing served 5 of us - anyone know how bad this would have been? The rest of it was beef/spring onion/red pepper and star anise. Served it with crispy baked kale - tasted just like crispy seaweed.

QueenStromba · 04/07/2012 19:27

That would have been fine I reckon ILoveStripeySocks.

ILoveStripeySocks · 04/07/2012 19:38

Thanks. I might add it to the recipe threadthen, if it gets BIWI approval Grin because it was very tasty!

tartiflette · 04/07/2012 19:49

Ah msrinky I used to love that Orangette blog. Must go back through it and see what she's got that would suit low carb ( and not get sidetracked by all the gorgeous baking...)

Whippoorwhill · 04/07/2012 20:20

Just caught up with Doctor Briffa's web chat. I was a little bit in love with him already but it's a full blown crush now. How wonderful was he? :)

Alpine Pony asked earlier if anyone makes their own sausages. I've got a Kenwood Major Titanium with a mincing attachment and I make a lot of sausage meat but I have to confess I can't be bothered fiddling with sausage skins so I turn it into patties. I make a big load and freeze them for meals later. Husband and kids have had eggs and a patty for breakfast almost every day since March.

PMMummy · 04/07/2012 20:30

Evening all Smile
Another good day, can't believe that I expected to feel lousy (am on day 5) but yet feel great.
This evenings dinner was a nice piece of steak with a mushroom and prawn cream sauce - lush !!!!
Oooooo and we just had cheeky cheese and crackers - slices of cucumber substituting as I discovered on this thread today - great tip.

Thegoddessblossom · 04/07/2012 21:21

Cutitout- I bought some but haven't tried it. Only do carbs as a breakfast option...

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 21:33

I fell off the bootcamp wagon. The raspberries are in. I have nurtured those raspberries all year and I absolutely have to eat some!

tartiflette · 04/07/2012 21:53

mrscb I've been having the odd bit of chorizo on and off and it hasn't stalled me, guess the only way to see is to try it. I know it's processed but it's not exactly something you'd be having twice a day ...

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/07/2012 22:05

I'm on my 3rd day today and am really enjoying this woe. I've not felt overly hungry and the headache I had on Monday & Tuesday has lifted nowSmile. Thanks all for the lovely recipe ideas, I've been a bit lazy this week but plan to have a good read of the recipe thread tomorrow & do a meal plan for next week, hopefully incorporating meals that I can reheat for lunches too.

I am missing crisps, I read up thread that pork scratchings are ok-is that really true?

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/07/2012 22:09

Thanks tartiflette. I had it and gosh it was delicious!

Ruggles · 04/07/2012 22:23

Hello, I'd love to join you :o

ohforfoxsake · 04/07/2012 22:24

marking my place - I keep getting lost Smile

SingingTunelessly · 04/07/2012 22:24

Havinganoffday - yes pork scratchings are fine even on Bootcamp I think, although no doubt BIWI will be along with her big stick if that is wrong. Smile
