Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g

Spinach0.8
Celery0.9
Broccoli1.1
Asparagus 1.4
Cucumber1.5
Lettuce1.7
Fennel1.8
Courgettes1.8
Cauliflower1.9
Avocado flesh1.9
Turnip2
Pumpkin2.2
Runner beans2.3
Swede2.3
Celeriac2.3
Bean sprouts2.5
Green pepper2.6
Baby sweetcorn2.7
Aubergine2.8
Leeks2.9
Okra3
Tomato3.1
Mangetout3.3
Shallots3.3
Brussels sprouts3.5
French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5
Onions7.9

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Hello - can I join?

I would never have known you guys were here if it wasn't for the Dr Briffa web chat - I loved his book. I was doing really well following his diet and looking at the primal blueprint blogs... But I didn't manage to stick to it. It would really help to have some motivation from checking in with you all. Buoyed by advice from Dr Briffa himself and discovering this thread I'm starting again NOW this minute. I need to lose one and a half stone. Is there room for me here please?

And can I ask, I've noticed mention of protein shakes. Can any of you recommend any particular brands?

MNP · 04/07/2012 13:19

Tarti have you tried homeopathy? I can control my tonsillitis with hypericum so only needs ab's for 1 in 4 episodes? Tho helps to catch it at the just becoming scratchy feeling for best effect.

vnmum · 04/07/2012 13:43

hi all.
sorry to hear of bad time heartstart and NMP

I didn't check in yesterday as I was severely ill with D and V. I couldn't get out of bed and DH had to get the doctor out to give me an anti vomiting injection so I could start to keep water down otherwise it would have been off to hospital for a drip. Luckily the injection and subsequent tablets worked and I am feeling better today which is just aswell because now DH and DD have started with it. A plus note is that I have lost 4lbs during my episode. I am expecting some of it to go back on once i'm eating again.

welcomw becs. The protein shakes some people use are these. I haven't used this brand personally but I am thinking of trying it as it is lower carb than the one I use.

SingingTunelessly · 04/07/2012 13:56

Whoh vnmum that sounds nasty. Now you have to be on nurse duty for DH and DC - think that's just as bad personally. Smile

Hug for Jan. Sad

Welcome to Becs, hope you stay with us this time.

Tarti, my sympathies if is it tonsillitus. I've only had it once and god it was excrutiatingly painful.

Wasn't Dr Briffa swoonsome, I thought he came across really, really well.

BIWItheBold · 04/07/2012 13:56

jan - sorry you're having a difficult day. Don't fall off the wagon in response though - no matter how tempting it might be!

Welcome, becstarsky! How could you not have known we're here? I monopolise the whole place with my bloody Bootcamp threads! Grin

tartiflette (your name is really all wrong for a low carb thread!) sorry you're feeling poorly. Hope you've stopped blushing and heart-throbbing now!

Fantastic webchat I thought. So good to have someone answer so many questions (especially so many of mine Wink), without plugging their latest book too much.

tartiflette · 04/07/2012 14:02

Thank you mnp, where do you get hyperi whotsit from? That sounds well worth a try.

Poor vnmum

Welcome becs.

Have managed to choke down some egg mayonnaise now as was bit worried about downing endless painkillers on empty stomach.
I'm so delightfully shallow my first action after ringing in sick this morning was to drag my carcass to the scales to check whether there was any downward progress (there wasn't- serves me right) Grin

PostBellumBugsy · 04/07/2012 14:08

Huge sympathy vnmum - keep glugging down the fluid (you lose loads with D&V) and if you can get hold of some dioralyte for all your family that will make sure you get your electrolytes (blood salts) back in balance.

Tarti - do you get many attacks? After years & years of recurrent tonsillitus I finally agreed to have mine removed in 2005. I can't tell you how much I wish I'd had them done sooner. The difference to my well-being has been amazing.

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 14:10

that webchat was BRILLIANT

so inspiring

have finally bought the book as well

tartiflette · 04/07/2012 14:11

I seem to get it every summer bugsy. That's really interesting, I have only heard negative stories about having them out as an adult. Might pursue it with GP then...

PostBellumBugsy · 04/07/2012 14:17

The post-op recovery wasn't great - but am still so glad I no longer have them. I was getting 8 or 9 attacks a year. From recollection the GP said you needed to be getting over 5 a year for them to refer you for removal on the NHS.
Interestingly the consultant who took them out, said that once you get regularly recurring attacks, it is unlikely that they'll stop as it is often an indication that you have deep seated infections in the tonsil tissues.

frumpet · 04/07/2012 14:18

Hello,
can i ask a couple of questions before i join in ? Does anyone else have a lot to lose , like more than 5 stone ? How long do we have to go alcohol free ? Can we eat raw spinach ? Smile

MNP · 04/07/2012 14:22

Tarti Boots or Holland and Barrett or a 'natural' shop.

Becs I use this shake mix with similar values but 3 times the price tho only buy in the 1p sales, when I have nearly finished I will order some sample packs of the other one and see.

MNP · 04/07/2012 14:26

Frumpet welcome I have 4 to lose but 5 would be fab and I hope so re spinach as I have it in salads along with pea leaves for a change.

PostBB I wish I could have mine out but they are to imbedded for easy and safe removal hence the homeopathic treatment pretty much non stop.

ILoveStripeySocks · 04/07/2012 14:27

Can I join you? Ive been doing it for a wek now, after reading all your previous threads! I am not weighing myself though, I have lots to lose so will know if it is coming off. I am already much looser in waistbands/bras!

Ive had one slip up Blush but felt so terrible (sleepy, yucky etc) that I know I dont want to do that again!

Anyway, this was my menu yesterday -

b - salami & small chuck of cheese (after a week of eggs, I needed a change!)
l - prawn cocktail, salad leaves, cucumber
snack - chicken drumstick
d - low carbs sausages, shallot gravy, mashed neeps (swede to those in Englandshire :)) with butter

Today has been -

b - fried egg, fried mushrooms
l - beef salad & homemade coleslaw

I know we are meant to avoid processed food, but I will find that impossible, so am allowing some good quality sausages/salami.

PMMummy · 04/07/2012 14:36

Frumpy - I too have a definite 4 to lose, so come on board and enjoy the ride !!! Grin

PMMummy · 04/07/2012 14:37

Sorry just renamed you frumpy (well actually my too clever for its own bloody good phone did). Blush

MNP · 04/07/2012 14:46

Is it an iPhone PMM the iPad drives me nuts sometimes but at other times is useful if I have brain fade.

mumto2lovelygals · 04/07/2012 15:12

Can I join, please? I have about 10lbs to lose and have started the gym but need to get a handle on my food and this looks straightforward to follow.

BIWItheBold · 04/07/2012 15:16

You are more than welcome!

OP posts:
TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 04/07/2012 15:24

Yay for more newbies!

B: Greek yoghurt and frozen berries; tea with full-fat milk
L: Watercress and spinach salad with tuna mayo, grated cheese and 4 cherry tomatoes
Snack: handful of raspberries
2 pints of water so far.

gottohide · 04/07/2012 15:28

Am doing low calorie at the moment, but thinking of switching to low-carb, and trying to figure out how I would start eating instead, so thank you for this thread!

I'm also thinking of trying out protein shakes, and saw a link earlier for Impact Whey Protein. Does anyone have the flavoured versions of these and could possibly let me know the calorie count?

The unflavoured is about 93 cals for a serving, and only the unflavoured nutritional info is listed on the website. I'd like to order a flavoured version, but not if the cal count is much higher than that.

Thanks! Smile

AlpinePony · 04/07/2012 15:28

Has anyone tried making their own sausages? Got any recommendations for a machine?

I live in The Netherlands and the sausages are meaty here opposed to the Walls "pink factory sweepings".

B: egg mayo
L: ham, strawbs with mascarpone
D: BIWI's shepherds pie with mushrooms (sat in fridge staring) and a dash of worcestershire sauce for oomph. Will need to go to the market/lidl for veg as nearly fell over in shock at 4 euros for 5 leeks. What in all the name that is holy?

BIWItheBold · 04/07/2012 15:56

gottohide - if you're switching to low carbing, no need to worry about the calories! Honestly! And fat is good too, just to blow your mind even further Grin

QueenStromba · 04/07/2012 16:13

Having a not hungry day today. All I've had so far is one bit of smoked mackerel and some tea and coffee with double cream. I've just made some pate which is in the fridge chilling, I'm going to have some in a bit on slices of cucumber (thanks to whoever it was that suggested them as a cracker substitute). Dinner will be roast chicken, celeriac chips, mayo and veg.

frumpet · 04/07/2012 16:14

Actually when i said more than 5 , i really need to lose 6 !

PMmummy i am not at all offended by being called Frumpy , tis what i am Grin

Do i need to share weight / measurements ? If i do , i will have to add them later as dont own any scales .
