Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g

Spinach0.8
Celery0.9

Brussels sprouts3.5
French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5
Onions7.9

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).

If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Thanks Singing. I scoffed a pack tonight on that basis Blush so we may both be in trouble Wink

frumpet · 04/07/2012 22:35

Can anyone link to the recipie thread please

SharonGless · 04/07/2012 22:47

Welcome to all the newbies - good to see you here. Can't post much tonight but can honestly say I feel the best I have for years
B 2 boiled eggs
L Tuna mayo salad
D chicken stirfry with courgette noodles
Piece of dark choc as a treat

Jan sorry to hear you have had a bad day- think about emotional eating. I have you read IPD book? The chapter in there really clicked with me and how I use food as a comfort blanket. Ahem, used to use food as a comfort blanket.

Ill ladies- I hope you all feel better soon. This bloody weather is driving me mad

Amaxapax · 04/07/2012 23:42

This might be a bit too much information, but today I've been having a bit of spotting. I'm right in the middle of my cycle and am on the pill, so usually very predictable. This is very unusual. Could it be related to this WOE? I'm a week and a half in.

On an unrelated note, I so live being free from cravings. As I finish my meals, sometimes I think about what I'll have for dessert. Then I think, oh, nothing. And I'm fine with that. I don't miss it in the slightest. Such freedom!

ILoveStripeySocks · 05/07/2012 06:26

Amax, I have heard that it can change your hormones when you start this woe, and spotting/period changes are quite common! It should settle down though :)

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 06:31

Just rushing in before I rush out to the gym!

Not much of a need for my big stick. Pork scratchings should be ok on the carb front. As ever, though, check the back of the packet. However they are a processed food, and we are trying to keep usage of those to a minimum!

Sticking at 9.13 here, irritatingly. We're off to Lille for the weekend, leaving tomorrow, so I'm not holding out much hope that I'll be down to 9.11 any time soon, which is a shame. I will see what happens tomorrow when I weigh.

SHARON! Dr Briffa has popped back onto the webchat thread to answer your question this morning!

What a superstar.

Yesterday was a good day

Breakfast - small piece of Cornish quartz cheese
Lunch - creamy mushrooms with lardons served with broccoli & green leaves
Dinner - steak, cauliflower dressed with a chilli & garlic oil and some buttery courgettes

Snack - small piece of Cornish quartz - I love the crystalline texture of this cheddar - dare I say it's sweetness too! No added sugar before BIWI starts shouting

A couple of slices of Parma ham.

Poured myself a glass of red wine to have with my steak but didn't drink it and it went back into the bottle - clearly I am still feeling a little under the weather because I can never resist wine.

Belly feels less bloated today - which always makes you fell more svelt.

I'm toying with the idea of making my own sausages and burgers. Shop bought sausages taste horrible - seriously I cannot get into them - too salty, too much in the dried herb dept.... I need something with real flavour. I'm not salt nazi, I love salt especially maldon but the salt in processed foods is as subtle as a sledge hammer.

Have found a chorizo in Waitrose that contains only pork, salt, paprika and garlic and for processed sausages that not too shameful at all - I always keep some in the fridge to add some flavour to a salad or some eggs.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 05/07/2012 07:34

amaxapax re your spotting. Yes this woe can sometimes interfere with hormones and you get interim spotting/bleeding. This happened to me and I was totally flummoxed as I am also on the pill and dont break, just keep on going, so shouldnt have any bleeding at all...

Anyway, did a lot of research and its to do with this woe - all should settle down as your body converts and gets rid of all the hormonal stuff that has been hanging around. (In a nutshell)

I am fine now, sometimes get the odd day of spotting, but after doing this for 7 months all is well. Grin

Morning everyone, still plodding along, converted my niece to this woe too - although she is very fussy on meat and veggies so I think she is finding it a bit tricky.

jan2011 · 05/07/2012 08:00

morning all. had the most stressful day ever yesterday and unfortunately did fall off the wagon but thank you so so much for all your support as it nearly stopped me!

i had a hosp appointment first thing yesterday and i have osteoperosis so they are saying i have to stop breastfeeding to get my periods back so help with my bones - im soo upset about this. and then dh was horrible to me all day. feeling all crappy this morning BUT once i get my thoughts together i will be al positive PLUS i have a spa day with mum to look forward to later :) :)

glad everyone had nice time with John Briffa yesterday i had a nice time reading through some of it some interesting and funny questions it cheered me up him being offered a biscuit hehe

springgoddess that sounds awesome being able to make your own burgers - how impressive would that be. thats one thing i don't understand - where does everyone get al the time to cook from? or do you just get good at it and it takes less time? lol

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 08:13

Sorry to hear about yesterday jan - and your diagnosis. I presume you have also been advised to look to increasing calcium in your diet? Green leafy veg as well as yoghurt will be very good and low carb sources for you.

QueenStromba · 05/07/2012 08:50

Don't forget the vitamin D too jan. In fact that goes for everyone. I was reading in the Telegraph yesterday that they're expecting an outbreak of rickets this year because the summer has been so rubbish - I take a high dose vitamin D pill every day.

Creamtea1 · 05/07/2012 08:55

Morning ladies, I need a rant
Last night I experienced my first weight loss 'hostility'
. Was with some friends and had the standard what have you been doing, don't understand how it works, I could never give up bread etc which is fine and I'm used to. What I didn't like was the next bit which was a round of I'd rather be fat and happy than skinny and miserable, and i don't care what people think of me if they don't like me fat then I don't want them as friends, and life's too short for stupid diets...etc etc
Felt really ganged up on and a bit like they were being 'off' with me!

ZZZenAgain · 05/07/2012 09:29

this is my fourth day and I need a bit of encouragement please. I feel hungry a lot of the time, not satisfied without my carbs. Does this pass?

teaandthorazine · 05/07/2012 09:37

Hi ZZZen - yep, it passes! You're entering the tough bit of low-carbing; day 4/5 are usually a bit crap for most people and lots give up at this stage. Don't!

You probably need to up your fat intake. This will make you feel fuller. In these early days it's ok to snack a little too - as long as it's low-carb! Your body does need to adjust, give it time. After a while, as long as you're eating right, you'll lose the need to snack.

Can you post what you've been eating - maybe we can make some suggestions to help you feel a bit more satisfied?

Ithastobepurple · 05/07/2012 09:44

Hi everyone

Can I join in?

I have been lurking for weeks but have joined Mumsnet in order to come on this thread! It would be lovely to have some support - since I can't seem to encourage anyone in RL to this WOE.

I started off with Harcombe and I am in the process of reading Dr John Briffa Escape The Diet Trap.

I dont have a scales so can't join in with the weigh in but I have gone from a size 16 to a size 12 since Easter.

This WOE is a revelation and I wish I had discovered it years ago!

teaandthorazine · 05/07/2012 09:47

Creamtea1 - I used to be one of those Blush. And I meant it too, tbh - I still think life's too short for counting calories an my calorie-obsessed friends used to drive me up the wall (still do)!

For me it also came from a place of genuine concern about fitting into some media stereotype - the silly woman who frets about her figure, obsesses about every mouthful, pushes a salad around her plate, thinks puddings are 'naughty' (saints preserve us, that word still makes me see red). I definitely didn't want to be one of 'those'... still don't, hence scarfing down steak and butter at every opportunity!

What I'm saying is, they have their own issues and one day they'll probably see the light Smile

It's not fair if they made you feel ganged-up on, though. I think we do all tend to get quite defensive and protective of our own WOE, don't we? Just smile sweetly and know in your heart you're doing the right thing!

I had a chat with a mate this morning who's battled with her weight for years. She's not massively overweight but she has high BP and does need to shed a couple of stone. She goes to the gym 4 times a week with a personal trainer and works herself into the ground. She was telling how she's only lost half a stone in 4 months. I'm afraid I couldn't resist telling her about my results - but she wouldn't buy it. She won't change her diet at all (low-fat). She's sticking to paying £100 a week to not lose weight ... each to their own I guess!

ZZZenAgain · 05/07/2012 10:08

thanks t and t!

B: 2 boiled eggs
L: big salad with olive oil and steak or chicken fried
EM: stir fried vegetables

and snacking on natural yoghurt and carrots

mummyduff · 05/07/2012 10:12

Creamtea1 I honestly think no one is truly happy when overweight we just dont want to admit it! I also think some of it was probably a little jealousy that you are doing so well and looking greatSmile

I have to say the funniest thing I have had, is a family member who has always been big but lost a lot last year only to put back on, wont comment on my loss at allConfused She avoids it like the plague and when her husband said how well I was doing - she just said well yes its fine she has time to go to the gym etc!! I just smiled, but honestly some people.

Jan Im I am so sorry to hear about your bad day, I hope today is a little easier on youSad

teaandthorazine · 05/07/2012 10:20

Ok, a couple of things jump out at me ZZZen

  • lose the carrots. Not allowed on bootcamp (too sweet = too carby) and also won't fill you up.
  • what sort of yoghurt? must be full-fat, Total is low carb, Lidl do an even lower one if you have a shop near you.
  • you need more fat Grin. Hardest thing to get your head around on this WOE but it's absolutely essential, both for health and weightloss. How about adding avocado or olives to your salad? Mayo? Crispy bacon?

Snacks are sometimes a necessity especially in the early days. But try to stick to stuff like cheese, olives, cold meats, prawns, maybe even some nuts (almonds or macadamias are the lowest carb)

HTH!

ZZZenAgain · 05/07/2012 10:22

OK thanks for that. Didn't realise carrots were a no-no! It is not low fat yoghurt AFAIK but that natural stuff, that is a bit sour. I had some mayo yesterday but I was wondering about that, isn't that breaking the no sugar rule? Mine has sugar in it.

ZZZenAgain · 05/07/2012 10:23

olives and bacon I can do. Have to admit I had some rice yesterday because I was so hungry!

Jins · 05/07/2012 10:28

Creamtea1 I've had that for years now. In fact it's got worse as the time has gone on because I'm still doing it and I'm still maintaining my weight. I sit there listening to people moaning about calories and running and watch them getting bigger and bigger jeans and keep my my mouth shut. Every so often they'll have a pop at me when they notice I'm eating a salad while they're tucking into a plate full of cakes 'because they've been good all week'

I think they look at what I eat and see it as a reminder of what they should be doing. I think it annoys them intensely that I can stick to a 'diet' when they can't. I also think they hate the fact that I'm maintaining easily when they know that to maintain on low calorie they are going to be either permanently starving or constantly exercising.

It's not every time we go out but it's enough to be annoying. Every now and then one of them will have rejoined weightwitchers and will lecture me on how unhealthy my diet is. I just keep it zipped. You can't lead a horse to water and all that...

Creamtea1 · 05/07/2012 10:30

Thanks tea and mummyd
I did try to say I'm not counting etc and still having curry, steak, loads of yummy stuff but they just don't get it!
As you say it's about knowing in myself I am doing the right thing Smile
