Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Right you're all brilliant thanks Smile

teaandthorazine · 03/07/2012 20:28

Mmmm, just had lovely dinner of chicken breast in a cheese and mushroom sauce, with steamed buttered savoy cabbage, broccoli and asparagus.

Now need to settle down and get some work done, so if you see me on here tonight, feel free to yell at me!

GreenEyesAndHam · 03/07/2012 21:07

((Heartstart))

((NMP))

((poorly folk))

And ((moonshine))- really hope your results can shed some light on your weight issues.

Hope everyone else is ok, well done to all the losers this week

Thegoddessblossom · 03/07/2012 21:28

Celery, lettuce, cucumber, baby toms, coleslaw for tea, to prevent onset of scurvy.

QueenStromba · 03/07/2012 21:51

I had a brilliant haul in the reduced section of Tesco this evening. 2kg of river cobbler for a fiver, 3 pork chops for about 2.50k, two large plaice fillets for £2.50, salmon for £2 and lamb steaks for £2 - the last two were part of the 2 for £7 deal so I got an extra quid off :)

I had the salmon for dinner marinated in soy sauce (tamari so gluten free and very low carb), ginger and spring onions with a mixed veg stir fry.

[grumpy face]

I asked MNHQ if I could to up to the Towers tomorrow, to meet Dr Briffa. But apparently he is too busy.

I might have gone off him just a little bit now.

GreenEyesAndHam · 03/07/2012 22:31

Too busy? Shock

Has he not read the the threads?!

BIWItheBold · 03/07/2012 22:34

Well, quite.

teaandthorazine · 03/07/2012 22:36

I can't think of anything to ask him except perhaps 'what was the worst celebrity shopping basket you ever reviewed for the Guardian?' I am a crap devotee Blush

Am that they used my post (about him being Proper Science) in the OP though.

SharonGless · 03/07/2012 22:37

Too busy? Does he not KNOW who you are?

smokinaces · 03/07/2012 23:23

Hello, late checking in $sts this week) but quick help - horrific indigestion. I've chewed through gaviscon tablets which are helping. No idea why, eaten scrambled eggs, tomatoes, water, ham salad with mayo all as normal. Only difference was a pack of 2.2 g carb Brazil nuts. I honestly thought I would be sick earlier and my bra felt so tight. Any ideas anyone???

SharonGless · 04/07/2012 06:51

Smokinaces my sister had it this week, think its a bug

mummyduff · 04/07/2012 07:19

Shock BIWI he obviously has not read these threads!!!

I ve been up since 5am with DS1 - got to love birthdaysSmile

Have a great day everyone x

smokinaces · 04/07/2012 07:32

Ah pants. I haven't got time to be ill. Will down painkillers and antacids then until it passes. :-(

SharonGless · 04/07/2012 08:20

She isn't on this woe what is dairy intolerant. Peppermint tea might help better than antacids
Hope you feel better soon

NotMostPeople · 04/07/2012 09:01

Well I weighed myself this morning after three days of bad food at the hospital and much to my amazement I haven't gained a thing! And period is later again (it was last month) so I'd expect to have a bit of bloating. I was still munching biscuits yesterday morning so it may still appear.

Last night DH cooked me a lovely meal of pork steaks, asparagus, and spinach and I'm about to cook some bacon for breakfast, so back on board.

I have now got a wardrobe problem, there are about ten pairs of trousers and jeans hanging there that are too big like falling down too big. In fact that was what made me go back on track - what a lovely problem to have.

DS is recovering well and milking all the attention now, thanks for all the lovely good wishes.

BIWItheBold · 04/07/2012 09:04

Phew! On all counts!

BUT STEP AWAY FROM THE BISCUIT TIN NOW YOU'RE HOME AND ALL IS WELL!

OP posts:
Shimbo · 04/07/2012 09:25

NMP, glad you and DS are ok! And the wardrobe problem is fantastic!

I need help. I am on around Week 7/8(?) and have not been feeling too great the last few days. My stomach feels strange, a bit of indigestion, although I am managing to eat properly still. My skin and hair aren't in great condition, I just feel and look tired and drained with blotchy dry skin and lifeless hair. I am just feeling a bit miserable (although that could also be due to the crappy weather). Is it LCing? Could it mean that this WOE doesn't suit me?

HumphreyCobbler · 04/07/2012 09:45

glad your ds is better NMP.

I am still retaining the three pounds I put on at the wedding. I am very premenstrual and I expect that is why, I have not cheated once.

Still, my mood swings seem to have disappeared. This is an inestimable bonus, for me and for DH Grin

MNP · 04/07/2012 12:11

Well it comes, stays for a bit then most of it goes ::sigh::, roll on Monday. This daily shufty at the scales is draining yet compulsive.

Plan for today is to up the water as have been somewhat lax.

WillieWaggledagger · 04/07/2012 12:20

Pleased you're home and all getting better NMP

i had been putting off getting new clothes until after my car's MOT/service/tax/insurance which are all coming in the next few weeks, but caught sight of myself in the work mirror and realised my (now two sizes too big) trousers were giving me a saggy Elephant Bum? so gave in and bought some new ones

jan2011 · 04/07/2012 12:46

dinner went well with friend last night although i suspect the veg side dish was too high calorie for her as she didn't eat much of it (and it tasted yummy)
on a down note, having really awful day with dh.

MNP · 04/07/2012 13:02

Yeah the web chat was great, two questions answered and lots of information from his replies to other mn questions :)

tartiflette · 04/07/2012 13:11

Yes loved the webchat, wasn't he lovely? [blush}

Feeling dreadful today think I have actual tonsillitis although am steering clear of the dr as am not a fan of antibiotics if at all avoidable. I find they really mess my system up for a couple of weeks and I am so focused on this woe that I'd really rather not have that complicating factor to deal with. Will have to see though as have had it quite badly in the past.

jan sorry you and your DH are having a bad day. Stay strong food wise, you know it would only make you feel worse to slip off the wagon.

Willie I'm in the same boat re. trousers... trying to hang on a couple more weeks before buying anything but they don't look great!

MNP · 04/07/2012 13:14

:) at the EB look Willie but bet the new smaller trousers felt good to buy and better to wear.

Tho the weight loss hasn't been big for me, people are noticing the changing shape which helps when the scales are being mean.

:::hugs::: Jan
