Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

BIWI thank you and yes you're right, no idea how much the total carbs in my 'cereal' would have been and will check. Where I've snacked its been the wrong things. Thanks! Have a fab weekend en Lille.

SharonGless · 05/07/2012 22:53

Shimbo
How about having celery with cream cheese or pâté on as a snack?
Crudités with garlic mayo?

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:54
Grin You're really thinking "fuck off BIWI and get out of my face", aren't you?!

DH has sprung a surprise weekend away before birthday celebrations proper so I may have to extend my target day to my hols on 21st Smile

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:56

Ooh lovely! Where? Or is that a surprise too?

OP posts:
SharonGless · 05/07/2012 22:58

Surprise- first time ever, he is threatening Blackpool

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:59

I went to Blackpool, to a sales conference for Princes Pastes and Spreads, in November. To the Imperial Hotel.

I shall never go there again.

BIWI never! Just grateful to you for keeping us on the straight and narrow :)

Celery and cheese sounds yummy, will try that tomorrow.

SharonGless · 05/07/2012 23:01

Shimbo salami or ham rolled up with cream cheese in it is yummy to.. Olives?

BIWI - spent a night there many years ago Hmm he knows my thoughts on Blackpoool...

Amaxapax · 05/07/2012 23:02

BIWI, I'll be coming to you for advice in a few weeks. My stepmom is taking me to Paris for a few days at the end of July. So far I've found all this very easy, but faced with French food may suddenly feel very different.
Have a lovely weekend away!

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 23:04

Thank you, Amaxapax! Actually, as long as you avoid croissants/pain au chocolat (and all the lovely bakeries), French food is quite easy to navigate.

I had a lovely dinner last night. Went out for a friend's birthday to Carluccio's and had lovely antipasti, but alas there was wine. My water intake was huge though, and I drank another 2l when I got home, so don't feel too manky this morning.

Everyone looked longingly at my plate of yummy meats, some cheese and marinated vegetables. I looked at the pasta and risotto round the table and didn't feel like theirs at all. Hurray.

Am off to the beach today (brrr) on a school trip. There will be 90 reception children, thoroughly overexcited and fit to burst. Please keep your fingers crossed for the rain to hold off.

Sharon - I went on a conference to Blackpool too and had great fun watching colleagues lose tons of £££ on the arcades. I hope it's er, as romantic for you! Amamapax, Paris will be wonderful (not better than Blackpool, just different!!). Think of all the lovely cheese and charcuterie you can have. Sounds brill. I am off to Edinburgh at end of July. Not sure how that fits with LC but we'll see.

Have a great day Smile

BIWItheBold · 06/07/2012 07:24

The beach! Are you all quite mad?!

Hope you stay dry.

STS here , was hoping for a little loss. Ah well.

Anyway, bye now. See you all again on Sunday evening.

Be good!

Sybil- he is joking ( I hope ) enjoy your day on the beach Confused if eel Friday night wine will be required
BIWI - have a fantastic weekend with DH

sybilfaulty · 06/07/2012 07:40

Certain parts of the UK have a month's rain forecast to fall in the next 24 hours. Please hope that Broadstairs is not one of them, or I'll be checking out the LC options in assorted cafes rather than hanging on the beach.

Have a great day everyone

HavingAnOffDAy · 06/07/2012 09:01

Wow, weighed myself this morning & have lost 3lbs!! I'm amazed & feel really good as I haven't had to starve myself so this is definitely do-able for me Smile

Have a great weekend BIWI, enjoy the beach Sybil I can recommend The Grainstore when you're in Edinburgh, the food was fab, not too pricey & within walking distance of Grass Market for a few drinks afterwards Grin

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 06/07/2012 09:50

I am still same weight here too. But its ok. Inches being lost. Grin

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/07/2012 09:53

Hmmm I seem to have put on a couple of lbs when I weighed this morning - could that be due to the two vodka and diet cokes after an unexpected win at netball on Weds night?!

Anyway back to serious bootcamp, lots of water for me.

Welcome to everyone new!

SingingTunelessly · 06/07/2012 10:06

Morning all, We've had about two weeks worth of rain already this morning. It's pretty grim out there.

Have good weekends those of you that are swanning off. I'm taking the dog to the vets. . We have got friends round this weekend tho so I am planning to go off track slightly. May miss the weigh in Monday. Blush Grin

Mrs Hercule, yep I bet it was the diet coke that did it. I'm finding vodka, soda and lime are fine but my beloved red wine sends the scales back up by a lb or two.

becstarsky · 06/07/2012 10:18

Mornin' all. Did better with breakfast today - buttered scrambled eggs - and am consequently not ravenous now. I've got some biltong in my bag for emergency snacking.

Work are taking me out for lunch - don't know where, so am just hoping that I'll be able to get a chicken salad or something... The antipasti plate sounds amazing sybilfaulty - if they have something like that on the menu I will be made up.

Dinner will be Bolognaise sauce with lots of mince beef over shredded steamed cabbage. How's that BIWI? Grin (You're a tiny bit scarey, you know. But in a good way.)

I finish my current contract at work today. I'll be working from home next week instead of commuting to an office, so it will be a bit easier to plan my meals... but harder to stay away from the fridge!

ZZZenAgain · 06/07/2012 10:24

morning everyone. Just day 5 for me (if having rice day 3 hasn't put me back). Didn't weigh myself at the beginning so no idea if I have lost any weight. Feeling annoyed because I drink a coffee ersatz made with spelt and I have just checked and see it is 60g carb! Blast.

VerityBrulee · 06/07/2012 10:29

BIWI can I ask about fruit? I am on day 5 now. It's not a huge change for me as I already avoid wheat, and don't like rice or oats. It's fruit I'm missing, the thought of live without cherries and nectarines is a bit grim.

Is all fruit the devils work?

QueenStromba · 06/07/2012 10:33

becstarsky - don't be shy of asking for salad or veg instead of the carb portion of a meal if there isn't anything low carb on the menu. I do it all the time and nobody bats an eyelid.
