Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g
Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4
Spinach0.8
Celery0.9
Broccoli1.1
Asparagus 1.4
Cucumber1.5
Lettuce1.7
Fennel1.8
Courgettes1.8
Cauliflower1.9
Avocado flesh1.9
Turnip2
Pumpkin2.2
Runner beans2.3

Bean sprouts2.5
Green pepper2.6
Baby sweetcorn2.7
Aubergine2.8
Leeks2.9
Okra3
Tomato3.1
Mangetout3.3
Shallots3.3
Brussels sprouts3.5
French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5
Onions7.9

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Finbar - headache and strange coloured wee do sound like dehydration. Are you sure you're drinking enough water, at least 2 litres a day preferably more? Strange coloured wee could also be due to any supplements you might be taking?

Feeling fat - maybe someone else can help with that. If anything I felt thin even though I'd only lost a few ounces by that point.

Hi to Lazy. The reason why milk is banned is because it is easy to drink a fair amount during the course of a day and it is carby. Can you change to full fat milk and just a splash? If you can let me know when to expect Summer then I can give you an answer Grin. BUT a stone in a couple of months you'll do no problem.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the newbies! Great to see I've stolen some from Shirley so many of you here Grin

Osmiornica - list out for me your meals over the last few days, and I'll see if I can help you. I hope you're drinking plenty of water to help get shot of both the migraine (poor you - I wouldn't wish those on my worst enemy) and the carbs from the chips!

OP posts:
WillieWaggledagger · 05/07/2012 19:05

Osmiornica you have my total sympathy. It was recurrent migraines which first prompted me to give this WOE a shot and for me at least it has been very effective in reducing the number and severity

SpringGoddess · 05/07/2012 20:20

osmi ouch to the migraines - hideously painful things - hope you recover soon. I think chips are probably the lesser of the evil carbs - even dr briffa said to feed kids potatoes in any form. It's only one meal anyway - as long as you don't make it your beginning of the slippery slope you'll be fine.

Thegoddessblossom · 05/07/2012 20:33

Lunch: tuna with olives and asparagus, coleslaw, roasted veg and cucumber

Tea: Bacon fried with courgette, mushroom, baby toms, followed by natural yog and strawbs.

Snacks: pkt pork scratchings, chunk of brie, glass of red.

15 glasses of water. I counted. Sad or what.

vnmum · 05/07/2012 20:39

alpine you have my full sympathies. I had d and v on tuesday and it has gone through the whole family.

nothing of major interest to report here, just an average day.

Shimbo · 05/07/2012 20:52

Ahhh! Just lost my long post. I will try again.

Warm welcome to all the newbies, so fab you're joining us and you won't regret it, imo!

Finbar, the feeling fat may come from drinking lots of water? It will go honestly in a few days after the bloated feeling that carbs give the stomach disappears.

I have two young children (toddlers) and am wary of reducing their carbs because they are so young and I think they need them at this age, and I don't want them to lose weight. But I will be reducing their 'white' carbs, especially sugar, and replace them with the better brown carbs, like porridge, wholewheat cereals, brown rice and pasta. Fruit I think is still important because at their age they don't have the taste or want to eat enough vegetables to get their nutrients. What do you all think?

I am feeling much better since I posted about feeling dodgy and tired yesterday. And today for the first time really I haven't been feeling that hungry. But I did eat, probably shouldn't have!

B: 'hot' cereal of ground flaxseed, ground almonds, and dessicated coconut (not bad!)
L: slice of cheese and some nuts and coconut
D: chicken salad and olive oil, greek yog and strawberries, two cheeky squares of dark choc Grin

teaandthorazine · 05/07/2012 20:55

Have been slogging away in the library all day, so only had a few nuts at lunchtime. Lucky this WOE kills hunger, right?!

Just had char sui pork stirfried with cabbage, beansprouts and asparagus. Twas delicious. Have drunk quite a bit of water, but probably not enough. Should be working tonight but am knackered so think I may slob on the sofa with a glass of wine!

A few threads ago I said I had a Dress Of Truth, one that didn't fit and that I wanted to get back into. Well today it does, and I did Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 05/07/2012 20:57

well done teaandthorazine

ZimboMum · 05/07/2012 21:28

Hi all, just checking in. Have just had coriander lamb with tomato vinaigrette a la Karen whatsit - low carb gourmet. Yum! With fried courgette.

Still struggling with addiction to coke zero. Have limited it to one small glass after work and trying to wean myself off it. And also having one glass of no added sugar squash. Anyone have any ideas for drinks? Don't drink tea/coffee and water on it's own is so boring after a while. Have fizzy water with a slice of lemon but something different would be nice.

mummyduff · 05/07/2012 21:38

well done Tea thats great Grin

catinboots · 05/07/2012 22:07

Hi - just checking in. Another 4lbs off.

To those of you that love pork scratchings - have you found pork crunch??

It is so much nicer. More like crisps. They sell it in Tescos but today I found a Hot and Fiery version in Spar

catinboots · 05/07/2012 22:08

Zimbo - Waitrose do a sugar-free Elderflower cordial which tastes like white wine Grin

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:10

Shimbo - careful - your day is looking like it's getting suspiciously carby - and your carbs aren't coming from veg or salad

Have you had a go at working out how many carbs you had today?!

OP posts:
MsRinky · 05/07/2012 22:15

Um, are you sure it's sugar free? Cause waitrose.com and indeed google reckon such a thing doesn't exist.

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:17

Oh well done, tea!

OP posts:
Amaxapax · 05/07/2012 22:19

Shimbo, I'm certainly not an expert, but I think the carbs in pasta and cereals are still pretty refined, brown or otherwise. Dr Briffa said pasta was basically sugar. I don't have kids, but I'd be tempted to see how they go without wheat, focusing on carbs from fruit and starchy veg, obviously with sensible exceptions for parties and whatnot.

Good food day here. Eggs and mayo for breakfast, salad with chicken for lunch, chicken cooked with leeks, mushrooms and bacon in a cream and feta sauce served with broccoli for dinner. Was inspired by one of the recipes on the recipe thread. So delicious and easy!

SharonGless · 05/07/2012 22:28

Evening everyone and welcome to the newbies again tonight.

BIWI. He came back! And he answered my question (shite though my question was- wish now it had been a bit more sciency)

B greek yoghurt
L ham salad and mayo with feta
D fish pie with celeriac mash for me
On the red wine now as just got back from first relate session. Am emotionally drained but not tempted to eat at all.

Tea that's brilliant to get in your dress of truth

HumphreyCobbler · 05/07/2012 22:32

I went out for dinner and they gave me low carb food. It was really nice of them. Except for the champagne, and that wasn't TOO bad Smile

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:34

So today:

B - yoghurt, before the gym, with a cup of coffee
s - piece of cheese
L - two pork loin steaks, panfried in olive oil and butter, with braised fennel and mushrooms
s - macadamia nuts
D - takeaway - chicken tikka, Indian Scotch egg, spinach bhaji

1 x rum and soda, 2 glasses white wine

We're off to Lille for the weekend, DH and I, so have no idea how the rest of the weekend will pan out.

OP posts:
SpringGoddess · 05/07/2012 22:37

Shimbo I feed my dcs whole foods - they are skinny wee souls and are in no way in need of slimming down, the increased fibre content of whole foods reduces the impact on blood sugar levels I try to serve it with loads of fat & protein. I try to make carbs the smallest portion and we don't have pasta as often as we did. I get them to snack on cheese, Italian ham and cooked meats.

Thing is we all react to carbs and wheat differently, some people can eat masses without much effect, others can't - the key is to know where on the line you are.

HumphreyCobbler · 05/07/2012 22:39

Have a lovely weekend BIWI

Shimbo · 05/07/2012 22:42

Crapsticks! BIWI, I obviously know nuts, strawbs and choc are carby, but what else have I had today that's bad?

Good to hear what you're all feeding your DCs.

BIWItheBold · 05/07/2012 22:48

'hot' cereal of ground flaxseed, ground almonds, and dessicated coconut (not bad!)
All of this will have carbs in. Do you know how many? Coconut is 6.4g per 100g, almonds are 6.9 - I don't have a figure for flaxseed

L: slice of cheese and some nuts and coconut
The cheese doesn't have carbs, but nuts and coconut? Again?!

D: chicken salad and olive oil, greek yog and strawberries, two cheeky squares of dark choc
Well, chicken is zero carbs. Salad is the only veg you have had all day! Greek yoghurt has carbs and so do the strawberries - and then there's the chocolate ...

I think you need to take a long, hard look at what you're eating - and then go and look at Bootcamp rules!!! Even if you're doing Bootcamp Light, there are too many carbs here - and not enough of your carbs are coming from vegetables and salad.
