Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 12 (but Newbies always welcome!)

BIWItheBold · 02/07/2012 08:04

Wow! Three months almost completed. I'm amazed what everyone has achieved, and really impressed how many people are still here!

They say it takes 100 days to make something a habit, and by the end of this week we will pretty much have reached that. Hopefully eating this way will have become much more 'normal' for us all now.

As requested, I have change the title of the thread, so that others interested in low carbing can find us more easily. I will also re-post the rules and the list of allowed veg:

The Carnivore Rules

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Eat lots of fat.
Eating fat helps you to burn fat. Honestly! Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

*5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol
If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.No nuts/seeds
Whilst these are really good to snack on later - it can be too easy to start snacking on these - and before you know it, all your carbs have gone on nuts. Seriously - in bootcamp - don't do it to yourself.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Allowed veg

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g
Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4
Spinach0.8
Celery0.9
Broccoli1.1
Asparagus 1.4
Cucumber1.5
Lettuce1.7
Fennel1.8
Courgettes1.8
Cauliflower1.9
Avocado flesh1.9
Turnip2
Pumpkin2.2
Runner beans2.3
Swede2.3
Celeriac2.3
Bean sprouts2.5
Green pepper2.6
Baby sweetcorn2.7
Aubergine2.8
Leeks2.9
Okra3
Tomato3.1
Mangetout3.3
Shallots3.3
Brussels sprouts3.5
French beans4.7
Cabbage5
Yellow pepper5.3
Carrots6
Orange or red pepper6.4
Ginger (peeled)7.2
Butternut squash7.5
Onions7.9

Veggie Rules

Only slightly adapted from BIWI's but best to take notice of the changes if you're vegetarian.

Focus on pure, natural ingredients as the basis for your meals. Vegetarian Sausages and Burgers are ok in small quantities, but check the carb count as some can be very high. Avoid foods marketed as 'Low Carb' such as Atkins Daybreak Bars, etc.

Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salads with your food ?
This is where most of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable.

5.Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited). It can impede weight loss for some people. If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. 8.No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada.

9.Beware of Nuts and Seeds.
Nuts are a very good way to include more fat and protein in your diet, however some are very high carb (e.g. Cashews). Stick to small amounts of Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Dried Coconut, Walnuts, Seeds and Peanut Butter, but check the ingredients, many supermarket brands have sugar added.

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Check the carb count of your mayo - I use Hellmanns which is fine but some are carbier. As a general rule anything under 4g per 100g is ok.

sybilfaulty · 05/07/2012 11:03

I went to a leaving party at work yesterday and avoided ALL the food! Simply had a glass of white wine and a litre of water. Felt so virtuous. THis morning I have swum a mile, now back and had an avocado and some ham and cheese. Should keep me going til mid afternoon, I reckon.

I love this way of eating!

SpringGoddess · 05/07/2012 11:18

creamtea try not to get too annoyed by their attitude - following this diet is contrary to everything we have been told in our living memory (well for some of us) by the Gov, the health authorities, our schools etc - it's very hard for some people to go against the grain.

It's also hard for people to admit or even challenge their own approach, people like to think they've got it right.

People spout a lot of nonsense when it comes to food and diet - much of it has no basis in fact. Phil Vickory said on This morning - "quinoa is an amazing food - its so good for you, it's pure protein" now this is nonsense it contains some complete protein but not a huge amount but what he said will be taken as gospel and many after watching that will believe quinoa delivers the same quantity of protein as a steak! I was screaming at the telly!

People get jealous, they like you but don't want you to achieve something
they have failed to achieve over and over again - feel sorry for them, it's a hard place to be.

I never get why people think your food choice is any of their business, why do I need to eat a cake just because my friend is - why should what I put into my mouth matter to someone else and that is what I ask them quite directly.

Finally - Fat & happy or thin & miserable - is that the choice these ladies face? its an odd choice - I know lots of fat people who are truly miserable about their size, their health and the effect on their self esteem is crushing. You could say I'd rather be thin and healthy than fat and ill but you wouldn't because what they eat is no business of your either. The more you try to defend your choices in life the more they will attack them, just learn to put the fixed knowing grin on your face - also known as thin and smug - and enjoy!!! Wink

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 05/07/2012 11:55

Mmm, I love food.

B: greek yoghurt and berries
L: (at 11.45 Blush) fried courgette, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and halloumi on watercress salad, with a couple of spoons of pesto mixed in. Mmm.

PostBellumBugsy · 05/07/2012 12:06

Aw Cream, those were mean comments. I never understand why people feel the need to do this. I can only presume it is an attempt to make themselves feel better. The whole point of this WOE is that you don't need to be half-starved and miserable. You can be slim & well-fed (or happy if that is how people want to define it!). What meanies.

Zzzen, if you are hungry you need to eat more - but low carb foods. You completely undermine the whole thing if you eat rice! Have some cheese, bits of chorizo, a few nuts, bit of peanut butter on celery - but don't have rice. If you up the fat, that will help you feel full for longer too.

HumphreyCobbler · 05/07/2012 12:26

I cannot believe how my PMS symptoms have disappeared this month. This is normally the point at which I fall off my healthy eating wagon (unless I exercise EXTREME willpower), feel tired, miserable, snappy and unable to sleep. I would often burst into tears at this point for no reason. It has been so bad that I have taken ADs in order to attempt to combat it.

But this time I just feel an enormous sense of well being. The only difference I can notice is the fact that I am slightly hungrier that I have previously been on this WOE.

It feels like a miracle! I do hope it lasts. Anyone else experienced an improvement in their PMS?

HavingAnOffDAy · 05/07/2012 12:33

Ah, see I checked the carb count & it was something like 1.4g per 100 Smile

They were yummy but I will limit them.

Can I just ask when you all started to see weightloss when you first started this woe? I'm avoiding the scales on a daily basis as I'd like to see a huuuuuuge result when I stand on them after a week or so but feel I may be disappointed!

Thanks

mummyduff · 05/07/2012 12:56

Havingadayoff I noticed weight loss after the 1st day and it has continued, it did slow down and I have had some STS weeks but all in all im 16lbs down from the start Grin

WillieWaggledagger · 05/07/2012 13:08

humphrey the bad cramps i used to have have all but disappeared (they were one of my warning signs that period was on its way so have been caught out a couple of times!)

annieapple7 · 05/07/2012 13:09

Hi everyone
Took part in the John Briffa web chat yesterday and feel inspired. I am addicted to carbs and sugar in particular and I am never going to look and feel the way I want while I eat them. Am going to dig out Waist Disposal. I find one of the hardest parts is planning what to eat. My DH and I can eat this way, but how to adapt it for 3 DC?
Also I would be vvv grateful if you experienced low carbers could post a few sample daily "menus" for inspiration.
At the moment I usually have
B - banana and peanut butter smoothie with 1/2 pint milk (mmmmmmmm)
L - fruit salad or banana or hard boiled eggs
D - meat, fish with veg
Will I cope with this new woe?

jan2011 · 05/07/2012 13:12

i am so much happier since i got thinner! i was fat and unhappy! being confident of my food, in control of my food, and knowing i am making healthy choices makes me happy. feeling out of control, like im gaining weight and eating crap makes me unhappy - even though there may be a measure of temporary enjoyment in comfort eating (something i am working on)

HavingAnOffDAy · 05/07/2012 13:37

Thanks mummy - hopefully I'll see a loss when I brave the scales then!

becstarsky · 05/07/2012 13:45

Gah! I didn't eat enough fat at breakfast to keep me satisfied, and by 11.15 was hysterical with hunger. Couldn't leave my desk at work so I could only get my PA to get me 'something from the shop'... ie a pack of crisps. Square One on Day One, how rubbish. Well I've learned from my mistakes - I'll eat a proper high fat breakfast tomorrow. I need to get myself over to the recipe thread and do some meal planning for next week's shop.

Love your post above SpringGoddess - you are so right about people clinging to misinformation about food, and how 'people like to think they've got it right'. Someone doing well while doing the exact opposite of what they believe in is quite confronting.

Lorelilee · 05/07/2012 13:45

Afternoon all. Am on day 4 and have a couple of questions:

  1. How do you know you are in keytosis?
  2. Can someone remind me why you can't have smoked salmon in bootcamp (I saw one today that only had 0.1g per 100)?

cheers

SpringGoddess · 05/07/2012 14:54

This weeks choices meant to be simple as dh is cooking!

Steak with chilli & garlic cauliflower and buttered courgettes - dcs had roast chicken with peas and salad pots - I wanted chicken for curry and dcs struggle with steak.

Chicken leftovers & pumpkin curry served with green beans - dcs will have brown rice

Warm cauliflower, bacon, egg & spinach salad with steamed fish - dcs will either have salad pots or homemade wholemeal rolls ( made once a week and frozen)

Roasted pepper & preserved lemon salad with roast chicken - dcs will have some potatoes - always with skins on!

Steamed fish with fresh tomato & caper sauce with broc - pots for dcs

Shoulder of lamb with veg mash and green beans - dcs will have pots and mint sauce.

Lamb curry using leftovers with cauliflower rice and brown rice for dcs.

Dcs have carbs for lunch and breakfast so I'm not too concerned about them having carbs in the evening and sometimes they want to eat exactly what we're eating - I'm easy either way. We aim to have no refined carbs at dinner.

BettySuarez · 05/07/2012 14:56

Have been feeling rough these past few days - no idea whether connected to WOE or not.

I feel very tired and weak (my muscles feel tired and weary) also lightheaded and a strange combination of feeling hungry yet not really fancying food much.

Can you go too far into Ketosis?

QueenStromba · 05/07/2012 15:11

I'm starting to feel like a broken record.

BettySuarez - the symptoms you are describing are due to lack of salt. Get yourself some lo-salt and put a shed load of it on something - this will replace your sodium and potassium.

AlpinePony · 05/07/2012 15:19

whip your patties sound gorgeous and I think I'm going to have to get a machine! :)

I feel vile, d&v all night and creche has just phoned... :(

I'm ashamed to say I had a mini-magnum - it's blistering hot here.

I've taken dehydration salts so hopefully will perk up.

Salt is so important in your diet and if you're eating "clean" then you're going to have to add it yourself. You'll feel a million times better once your electrolytes are in balance again.

I'm going to have tuna mayo later if I can keep it down.

BettySuarez · 05/07/2012 15:28

Thank you Queen - I won't be told will I? Grin

Makes sense also given the amount of water I am getting through.

CJCregg · 05/07/2012 15:39

Hello Smile

I've just read the Briffa webchat and am really interested in how this works. I've been doing ShirleyKnot's WOE, which is similar in some ways to this one, but I just can't be arsed with calorie counting and filling in the bloody food diary every day Blush.

I've stopped eating any refined sugar, cut right down on fruit, but was still having some supposedly 'good' carbs like seeded bread, oatcakes and porridge.

Felt incredible as a result of giving up the sugar Grin. Loads more energy and much happier. But not really losing weight. So can I ask a few questions about how you low-carb?!

  1. How long does bootcamp last?
  2. Why is full-fat yoghurt allowed (yum, by the way) but not skimmed milk? (I drink a lot of coffee, I know, I know)
  3. Really, no fruit? Some people seem to be eating berries etc with yoghurt - is that once you're out of the initial phase?
  4. Er ...
QueenStromba · 05/07/2012 15:48
  1. Bootcamp lasts as long as you want it to - a minimum of two weeks is recommended before moving on to bootcamp light
  2. Milk isn't allowed because it's far too easy to get through a whole pint in a day which would be 25g of carbs (that's more than I eat in a day most days). Full fat greek yoghurt has slightly less carbs (3.8g for total) and you are much less likely to eat 500g of the stuff.
  3. You can have berries on bootcamp light since they are the lowest carb fruit and also the most nutritious. Other fruit just has far too much sugar in and even worse it's mostly fructose which turns straight into fat in the liver which can lead to fatty liver disease (yes - the thing that alcoholics get) and whole host of metabolic problems.
NigellasGuest · 05/07/2012 15:58

CJCred I drink lots of coffee too - but with double cream, which is allowed!

Finbar · 05/07/2012 16:16

Hi
I have finally jumped in and am on day three.
I need to ask if these things are normal:

  1. to have a headache
  2. to feel fatter than before
  3. to have very strongly coloured wee! ( i am drinking water - honest!)

Had a prawn cocktail form M&S for lunch - is that REALLY ok?...it feels so wrong!!

lazyfish · 05/07/2012 16:37

Sorry if this has been covered before but just want to check a couple of things before I do my online shop in preparation for Monday. I have done the India Knight Idiot-Proof diet before - am I right in thinking the rules are fairly similar? Didn't think I was allowed yogurt on that but is full fat Greek yog OK then? Also found I could give up most things except my gallon cup of tea with skimmed milk - does this really need to go? Or could I ration myself to say just two or three during the day? Have I left it too late to be svelte for the Summer (Have about a stone to lose)...?

SingingTunelessly · 05/07/2012 16:55

Lorrilee, most people report a strange taste in their mouth when in ketosis but I never noticed that. You will find your appetite decreasing so that's how I knew.

Smoked salmon could be disallowed because it is not a pure product I think. but I ate it anyway Smile
