Morning campers!

Today's sermon is about cheating. There's been plenty of it along the way and there will be plenty more of it in the future.

It is important to accept that this is and is going to be a fact, as (hopefully) this is about a way of eating, rather than a diet. That means that sometimes there will be occasions and circumstances where it's impossible to keep the carbs down. The classic is when you're invited to dinner and your hosts serve you something 'forbidden', like pasta or rice.

Every now and then you will find that you also have a 'fuck it' moment. Where, for whatever reason, you eat something you shouldn't. It happens.

So.

If you're going to do it, do it right!

If circumstances are beyond your control - e.g. the dinner party - don't stress about it. If you've deliberately gone off piste, don't feel guilty about it. Enjoy the moment while you're in it.

What is absolutely critical is what you do next.

Beware that you will crave carbs and don't let yourself spiral out of control into a mammoth carb fest! Make sure that the 2-3 days immediately afterwards are strictly low carb, and drink plenty of water. And avoid the scales for the next few days!

Here endeth the lesson.

Hi all. Has anyone got any advice for a day out? I am taking DS1 to a uni open day on Friday, and it's a 3 hour drive each way. I would previously taken or bought sandwiches. How have others coped with situations like this? Sorry, still all a bit new to me.

HumphreyCobbler · 20/06/2012 20:04

Take a salad with lots of ham/cheese?

smokinaces · 20/06/2012 20:05

I've done a few picnics. Chicken wings or drumsticks cooked the night before, chunks of cucumber, low carb sausages, ham salad, small bag of nuts, pork scratchings.

MrsHerculePoirot · 20/06/2012 21:07

Hi everyone - thanks for the inspiring stories too - hopefully I'll become on of them one day....

Was difficult being away and having food provided but I did the best I could I think - none of the sandwiches and tried to pick at all the green salad garnishes instead. They did have chicken and salmon skewers, but not sure what they were marinated in and it tasted sweet so just had one each and then some of those peppers with cream cheese in which I know aren't great but on balance were I hoped bett than sarnies or all the spring rolls etc... I did drink lots do water on the train though and breakfast and then last night's dinner also good so hopefully I minimised the damage by listening to BIWI's sermon this week!

DH fully on board here now which is great - he is much better at cooking than me and makes the best omelettes in the whole world!

Also I'm on a high as played netball tonight and won!

Thegoddessblossom · 20/06/2012 21:13

Hotch potch tea tonight of celery, cheese, beef slice, sardines, boiled egg, glass of red, bit of dark choc.

Snacks today were 2 teaspoons of peanut butter and a boiled egg. Am always hungry after swimming.

slowlyburningcalories · 20/06/2012 21:32

Evening.

I have been rather ill. I was first sick on Thursday and couldn't stomach food again without being sick until Tuesday and even then it seems to be carbs which are stopping me feeling sick. I now have horrendous acid reflux after the bug and again carbs are stopping that. So I think I will just be led by my body until the weekend and then bootcamp.

Interestingly I am getting the classic sugar highs and lows, cravings, etc. I am not going nuts, not eating cake or biscuits, and still drinking water. But I have had rather a lot of dry toast and some chips. After five days I needed to eat something!

{please forgive me}

BIWItheBold · 20/06/2012 21:54

mindgone - increasingly you can find M&S Food outlets at service stations, where you will (usually) be able to buy a salad. Most of their salads do have rice/pasta/cous cous, but there are a few that you can buy that are low carb. They do a small pot of Greek salad, for example. And a lot of their picnic stuff is reasonably low carb. There are always packs of cold meats, and they sell individually wrapped portions of cheese as well.

I have been known, in extremis, to go to KFC and buy just chicken - no fries or coleslaw obviously - and (try) to take the crispy coating off it so that I eat just the chicken. (I don't always manage to do this, as it's so damn tasty - but it is carby as there is flour involved and, I suspect, something sugary as well).

slowly - I'm sorry to hear you've been ill. Don't worry too much at this point in time - just eat what you can keep down. You are forgiven! I hope you're feeling better very soon.

BIWI, thanks, yes I forgot about M&S at service stations!

Humphrey and Smokin, thanks too! Think I will take a picnic, and use M&S for emergencies.

Slowly, hope you feel better soon.

MNP · 20/06/2012 22:45

Well done MrsHP

QueenStromba · 20/06/2012 22:50

I had some M&S salad wraps for lunch today - the ones I had are chicken and some veg wrapped in daikon radish strips with some tomatoey pesto dip and some cherry tomatoes. I had some hot smoked salmon with them. I spent most of lunch time in the park trying to coax a mouse out of a multi catch humane trap. The thing was wide open and he insisted on sitting right in the entrance bit. We eventually took him home and left the trap sitting outside. I then had a couple of vodkas and got up the nerve to take him back to the park with a pair of rubber gloves. Once I was willing to handle him I got him out in seconds. He then did the cutest thing of hiding under a leaf by just putting his face under it.

I then had a leg of lamb from Sainsburys for dinner (thank you for the suggestion BIWI) with roasted aubergine, celeriac and asparagus. There's enough lamb left over for 6-8 portions of curry and I'm going to stick the bones in the slow cooker to make stock. It's really easy to make stock in a slow cooker. I put in about 1 liter of water for e.g. one chicken carcass and a shallot then leave it on low overnight. It makes wonderful stock and you don't have to worry about it at all.

puffylovett · 20/06/2012 22:51

Mindgone 3 hours isn't so bad :) we managed 6 hours down to Devon before we got deviated off our healthy eating by my sugar addict friends. We packed pepperamis which the boys loved! Chicken wings drumsticks and thighs, baby bels, bananas and nuts and that did us both fine. (and I would usually nail a pack of jelly snakes so we did quite well I think!) the journey back was quite the opposite though with junk a plenty

puffylovett · 20/06/2012 22:54

Queenstroma, meat stock is incredibly incredibly healing for the gut (allergies and such). It's used extensively on the GAPS protocol by Dr Natasha Campbell mcbride. Should preferably be from pasture fed animals though. But rammed full of amino acids and fatty acids that are just so good for us :)

WillieWaggledagger · 21/06/2012 08:03

that's very interesting about stock puffy and queenstromba

how long does it keep? we don't have a freezer

Shimbo · 21/06/2012 09:10

Morning all! Had a seriously delish dinner last night of roast lamb with fat on and spread with garlic and rosemary butter and greens cooked in butter.

After following advice yesterday I upped my fat for lunch and dinner and this morning it appears I have dropped 0.8kg/ 1.8 lb from yesterday morning?! Is this even possible in one day? Very happy all the same Grin, I am glad that it is working. Also means that I am almost at goal weight if I can maintain this. Yaaaaay.

BIWItheBold · 21/06/2012 09:28

I love being right!

puffylovett · 21/06/2012 10:30

Willie, meat stock made from raw bones will keep for up to 7 days in the fridge. But if you make it fresh regularly, you can use it to cook with, make soups with etc and just keep topping it up. It's recommended to eat as much of the fatty flesh and marrow as possible as its so nourishing

puffylovett · 21/06/2012 10:33

So far today I've had coffee with coconut milk a banana and 5 cashew nuts. Just not particularly hungry this morning after last nights scrumptious dinner. I sliced sweet potato thinly and baked in coconut oil, they were scummy and sweet but crunchy. along with red cabbage and a big chip baked with fennel and rosemary...
Another 2 lbs off this morning though, yay!

BIWItheBold · 21/06/2012 10:45

A banana? And sweet potato?

You do realise how carby they are, don't you?

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 21/06/2012 10:46

Banana - 23.2g carbs per 100g
Sweet potato 20.5 g carbs per 100g

puffylovett · 21/06/2012 10:55

Yes I know... I am kind of doing a mush mash of bootcamp and bootcamp lite I think! I only had a bit of sweet pot though
