Bootcamp Week 10 - Pretty Perfect!

Morning campers!

Today's sermon is about cheating. There's been plenty of it along the way and there will be plenty more of it in the future.

It is important to accept that this is and is going to be a fact, as (hopefully) this is about a way of eating, rather than a diet. That means that sometimes there will be occasions and circumstances where it's impossible to keep the carbs down. The classic is when you're invited to dinner and your hosts serve you something 'forbidden', like pasta or rice.

Every now and then you will find that you also have a 'fuck it' moment. Where, for whatever reason, you eat something you shouldn't. It happens.

So.

If you're going to do it, do it right!

If circumstances are beyond your control - e.g. the dinner party - don't stress about it. If you've deliberately gone off piste, don't feel guilty about it. Enjoy the moment while you're in it.

What is absolutely critical is what you do next.

Beware that you will crave carbs and don't let yourself spiral out of control into a mammoth carb fest! Make sure that the 2-3 days immediately afterwards are strictly low carb, and drink plenty of water. And avoid the scales for the next few days!

Here endeth the lesson.

Hello All, well done everyone Smile

BIWItheBold · 18/06/2012 16:30

Welcome, Snapespeare!

Just to say, though, that Bootcamp is low carb but high fat - which, I think, is different from Dukan.

Welcome Snapespeare! And sorry all for not posting, but I have been reading and following your progress. I had a little bit of a 'fuck it, it's not working' week, but was still pretty good, just overdosed on wine and had some bread and pitta bread and....I stayed the same Confused.

I have made a doctor's appointment for Friday though as I know something is wrong (although being told everything is normal would be a let-down - how messed up is that??).

Good luck for the week anyway. My experiment this week might be to actually slightly increase my carbs (although that feels scary even writing it!)

Livelongandprosper · 18/06/2012 17:23

Put on a pound this week. I have had several fuck it days but can't say I've really enjoyed the carby food as much as I thought I would.

Back to bootcamp to re-establish the thinking patterns re planning and preparing meals.

I love reading these threads, whatever sort of week I have had there will be something inspirational on here from someone and a kick up the arse

Thegoddessblossom · 18/06/2012 18:00

Not sure where my last post went...Hmm....anyway....

I drank over 4 litres of water yesterday and still went to bed thirsty. Weird.

DH cooked a big piece of ham yesterday -tea was one of my fave low carb meals, stacks of ham, salad and coleslaw. Who needs potatoes?

smokinaces · 18/06/2012 18:55

Just had my first attempt at homemade beef burger patties.

Yum.

Mixed the mince with chopped shallots, garlic butter, beaten egg to bind, sea salt, cracked black pepper, oregano and a spoonful of wholegrain mustard.

Had with a green salad, mayo and a bit of extra mature cheese.

Very impressed at my own home cooking now :-)

leanbh21 · 18/06/2012 18:58

B: scrambled egg made with butter and sour cream plus fried mushrooms
L: one veggie sausage in salad of iceberg, avocado, celery, gherkin and cheddar
D: tofu marinated in Chinese 5 spice stir fried in a little butter with bok choi, mushrooms, celery and a little Brie

What is the best way to monitor fat loss? I think the scales are mainly registering water loss for me. Are those fat % scales more accurate for tracking?

Also my mouth tastes like dog (or how I imagine that would taste) all the time. I'm drinking 4-5L of water/spice tea a day but can't get rid of the bad taste. Any ideas?

Snapespeare · 18/06/2012 19:07

Yeah, i'm kind of making it up as i go along, i've elected for dukan attack phase for the last week, just to torment myself that i've got so fat kickstart things... but i'm very generally following bootcamp rules... I'm day on day off with veggies/salads not over fond of butter and cream (but oh! Cheese!) no fruit and very occasional nuts. I'm going to have no alcohol during the week, but might fail miserably at the weekends. Thats ok, i'm generally with you guys. :) Drinking lots of water. :)

Scales should arrive wednesday. Have persuaded local friend to do couch to 5k with me, that'll start tomorrow or wednesday. :)

BIWItheBold · 18/06/2012 19:11

leanbh - it doesn't matter, does it?! If you're losing weight, then you're losing weight! It will be fat once you get into ketosis. And if you have that horrible taste in your mouth, then you're in ketosis.

Anyone got any cunning fish ideas? Done fish curries, a low-carb fish pie, poached smoked haddock in cauliflower cheese and Thai salmon fish cakes several times over.

Lacking inspiration again today (sorry to keep moaning) and hate eating things over and over again.

WillieWaggledagger · 18/06/2012 20:01

Roasted fish with homemade mayonnaise? I have that about once a week.

NigellasGuest · 18/06/2012 20:09

vnmum I think you should have full fat stuff, despite what your gym instructor says. I'm not sure about the exercising - perhaps someone else can advise.

I've just had the LC moussaka - how yummy Grin

MrsHerculePoirot · 18/06/2012 20:12

Aaaarghhhhh! At a hotel tonight for a conference thing tomorrow, booked in for dinner. But the restaurant was Chinese based which was unexpected and as I wasn't paying I couldn't really change. I chose lettuce chicken wraps (similar to spring rolls, but you wrap in lettuce, stir fried vegetables (both of which I don't think we're too bad and then pork belly in dark soy sauce - I really didn't know what sauces were going to be best... My blood sugars suggest that there was definitely something in the sauce, but they aren't catastrophic and I will check again in an hour to really know! Straight back on it tomorrow... And I'm doing much better in the water these last few days...

MrsHerculePoirot · 18/06/2012 20:15

Monkfish tails wrapped in streaky bacon (smoked)... Yummy!

I usually just wrap fish in foil with some Butter and herbs and shove it in the oven!

BIWItheBold · 18/06/2012 20:38

We had marinated salmon and stir-fried veg for dinner tonight. DH and DS2 had theirs with noodles and beansprouts, I had mine with beansprouts and mushrooms. It was delicious! I think I've posted the recipe for the salmon on the recipe thread, but if not:

one salmon fillet per person
marinade in sesame oil, juice of a lemon (or lime), soy sauce, 2 crushed cloves of garlic, 1 inch piece of ginger, finely chopped, black pepper and Chinese 5 spice powder

Marinate for about 30 minutes, then wrap them in foil, with the marinade, and bake in a hot oven for 20 minutes.

Thanks for all the fish (ideas)! Grin

All sound v good.

leanbh21 · 18/06/2012 21:50

I guess you're right BiWi I just feel like water weight is likely to go back on whereas fat (inches) is actually what I'm trying to lose. Must get around to measuring...

What do you guys use for sauces? I've done melted Phili a few times but I any something different.

BIWItheBold · 18/06/2012 22:34

Sauces for what?

OP posts:
leanbh21 · 18/06/2012 22:36

Anything really. Am veggie so struggling with meals and ho

leanbh21 · 18/06/2012 22:38

Anything really. Am veggie so struggling with meals and hoping to add some flavours. I guess something to add to tofu which doesn't have much taste of its own or to pour over vegetables.

leanbh21 · 18/06/2012 22:42

I might try to pick up a veggie cookbook for low carb. I borrowed a diabetic cookbook from the library which is useless (low fat, high carbs) and the Atkins cookbook in whih the veggie chapter has nothing suitable for phase one and most of the recipes involve some Atkins product! Our usual meal recipes don't work - lots of beans, tomatoes, quorn. Far too many carbs.

I do have some flaxseed so I'm planning the pizza from the recipe thread for tomorrow evening :)

BIWItheBold · 18/06/2012 22:48

Pesto is OK - basil, olive oil, pine nuts and parmesan. You could make it yourself or buy a jar (just check the carb counts!)

OP posts:
BIWItheBold · 18/06/2012 22:48

If you're OK with dairy, then mushrooms fried gently with chopped shallots, and then a glug of cream makes a lovely sauce.

leanbh21 · 18/06/2012 22:50

Thanks. I'll give those a try later in the week.

sybilfaulty · 19/06/2012 07:15

Morning girls

I went out to meet a friend for supper last night and had delicious spatchcock pouissin with caesar salad - hurray! Unfortunately I also had 2 gin and slimline tonics, which is not great for a school night, let alone a monday, but I resisted the wine and won't have more booze this week.

Am very tired today though. was not in bed til midnight, which is nearly 2 hours past my normal time. Will have to go to bed early tonight.

Have a great day everyone and eat well.
