Bootcamp Week 10 - Pretty Perfect!

Morning campers!

Today's sermon is about cheating. There's been plenty of it along the way and there will be plenty more of it in the future.

It is important to accept that this is and is going to be a fact, as (hopefully) this is about a way of eating, rather than a diet. That means that sometimes there will be occasions and circumstances where it's impossible to keep the carbs down. The classic is when you're invited to dinner and your hosts serve you something 'forbidden', like pasta or rice.

Every now and then you will find that you also have a 'fuck it' moment. Where, for whatever reason, you eat something you shouldn't. It happens.

So.

If you're going to do it, do it right!

If circumstances are beyond your control - e.g. the dinner party - don't stress about it. If you've deliberately gone off piste, don't feel guilty about it. Enjoy the moment while you're in it.

What is absolutely critical is what you do next.

Beware that you will crave carbs and don't let yourself spiral out of control into a mammoth carb fest! Make sure that the 2-3 days immediately afterwards are strictly low carb, and drink plenty of water. And avoid the scales for the next few days!

Here endeth the lesson.

You don't have to eat chicken skin :)

tartiflette · 23/06/2012 16:56

Thanks for the welcome all and jan I'm so sorry you're having a rough time with DH. Obviously don't know your circumstances but I know I've had a v bumpy ride with mine over the last two years since we had children. It is very tough and I hope that the fog will lift as we gradually get more sleep and more time to ourselves and financial pressures ease a bit.. yours hopefully ...

Breakfast: bacon, egg, mushroom and a coffee with cream
Lunch: Prawns, mayonnaise and green salad
Snacks: two more coffees with cream (I know this is not ideal but really struggling to cut down on the coffee)
Dinner: tbc... we're going out, hoping for steak and green veg or something along those lines.

I have a question: the IPD diet suggests as you get closer to target you can gradually increase carbs until you are at their stage 3 of occasional porridge, pulses, wholewheat bread etc. But this seems counterproductive when the last half stone or so is so bloody difficult to shift - instinct suggests I should be cutting down the carbs if anything (not that there's much scope for that!) for the last leg... What do you all think?

Jins · 23/06/2012 17:27

Definitely increase carbs for the final run otherwise you'll struggle to manage maintenance. You ideally want the final few pounds to come off really slowly.

welcome sweethart, im sure you wil get a few pounds off before your holiday doing this plan.

thanks for kind words re my situation with dh. Biwi i understand why you say about the baby - in normal circumstances i would completely agree, but i was ready to move out before i had her (she's 8 months), we are in marriage counselling now and i feel if things don't change in another 2-3 months i will leave - but just to separate. he can get help himself and then maybe we can get together again in time - ive realised that its a bit of a verbally abusive situation im in.

vnmum looking forward to hearing about your experiment! what kind of exercises did you do to change your body shape?

Shimbo · 23/06/2012 18:10

Welcome tartiflette, and sorry to hear about your situation Jan. I think it is fantastic that you are carrying on with the plan with what must be a very stressful time. I know I crave carbs as soon as I am stressed.

Can I ask please, especially the longtimers, if you have noticed any difference in your hair with LCing? I have only been doing it a month and a half and my hair seems to be falling out more than normal and is not in my usual condition. If I am going to lose hair with LCing I am very worried!

Jins · 23/06/2012 18:19

Yes to hairloss. I'd forgotten that. It does settle down and grows back better. Grin

vnmum · 23/06/2012 19:10

jan I do mainly weights and bodyweight exercises 3x a week. Occasionally I will go for a run. There is usually a small bit of intense cardio mixed into my weights circuits like rower or sprints on the bike. I have done different exercises throughout as my gym changes my routine every 12th visit so it keeps the body guessing. I do some weight machines, free weights like dumbell rows or dunmbell pullovers, weighted lunges and squats, shoulder raises, plank with a twist holding a 2kg weight, kettlebell/medicine ball swings, things like that. My current program incorporates a 1km row and aim to beat my time each go (current pb is 4m31s) and some 30sec sprint 30 sec rest intervals on the bike at the end. The gym is also running a press up challenge so I have been doing alot of press ups this past month. I set out to do 50 per visit but then got competitive with myself and tried to improve my number each time. On wednesday I did 275 (full on toes) during my gym session which is a sign of how much stronger I am getting which i'm sure the amount of protein I am eating is helping with the muscles.

Maybe if i can crop my head off I might think about putting the photos on here. THINK, I said, I have to build up the bravery Smile

jan2011 · 23/06/2012 19:18

vnmum that sounds amazing! i would LOVE to see the pics and im sure everyone else would too - it would inspire all of us :) i have to admit, when i go to the gym i tend to hit the dreadmil (!) or other cardio machines. the only weights i do are very light dumbells occasionally at home, and i only know 2 ways to lift them. i always wanted to learn them in the gym but can't afford a personal trainer - i am a complete weakling as well. i used to do yoga before baby, and it really built up strength - astanga yoga. it uses your body weight as the weight and was very effective.

vnmum · 23/06/2012 19:52

Right, after reviewing the pictures I decided I am quite proud of the changes so have been brave. They are now on my profile!!

Anyone who wants to know some stats:
I am 5'4, dress size before was a 12, dress size now is a loose 10 (does depend on shop though as to if the 10 is loose Smile)
I do only weights/resistance with short intervals of intense cardio, no long cardio sessions
I lost 10 lbs between the two sets of pics.

I don't think I would have looked as slim if I was the same weight on weight watchers as some weeks I haven't lost weight but have lost inches on this WOE.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 23/06/2012 20:08

Evening all, day 10 here and still going well.

Struggling with breakfasts badly though, i am sick to death of eggs, i never liked them much before this.

I have looked into yoghurt but that's still more carbs than i want to take on at the moment.

Anyone have any wonderful breakfast ideas....that doesn't involved eggs?!

teaandthorazine · 23/06/2012 20:25

Which yoghurt are you looking at, Hokey? Total full-fat greek yog is very low in carbs, and Lidl do one that's even lower if you have a branch near you.

Otherwise, how about smoked salmon (great with a blob of Philadelphia and rolled up), or ham and cheese roll-ups? Cold cooked sausages dipped in mayo or mustard? Or leftovers do very well as breakfast - you don't have to eat 'breakfasty' foods at all!

Though I've got to admit I usually bypass the whole breakfast thing completely and have a protein shake with double cream and a spoonful of coconut oil - but I'm a bit weird like that Grin

BettySuarez · 23/06/2012 20:28

Hokey I agree re breakfast. Have gagged a few times on eggs Sad

Bacon? Mushrooms? Halloumi?

Failing that, a small pot of yoghurt might just be enough to sustain you and prevent the risk of derailing later in the day.

Well done getting to day 10, we started on the same day and I am finding the whole thing a bit of a revelation Smile

I don't suppose anyone has any low carb soup recipes?

HumphreyCobbler · 23/06/2012 20:29

photos look brilliant vnmum. Well done.

MrsHerculePoirot · 23/06/2012 20:30

Hi everybody!

Jan - sorry to hear about your difficulties with you and your DH. I hope things are resolved either way soon for you.

Vnmum - well done!

I have been pretty good all week I think - I still aren't drinking enough water every day, but foodwise have been good. DH has also lost 6 lbs so far this week, although away on a golfing weekend this weekend so not sure how that will go!

I've also realised today how much I sometimes just eat through association with an activity rather than because I am hungry. My GCSE exam marking has just started and I really wanted to eat crisps and sweet things because that was what I did last time! I almost caved when shopping earlier, but didn't and just bought myself a diet lemonade instead as a 'treat'! I've also made some lollies with sugar free squash as they take me ages to eat and I'm quite happy with that if everyone else is having ice-creams and I'm having food envy.

Weigh in day tomorrow - after massive loss last week, I'm expecting a relatively stable weight this week... Hope everyone else is having a nice Saturday night and not marking like me!!!

BettySuarez · 23/06/2012 20:30

Would love the protein shake recipe if you have it tea Smile

BIWItheBold · 23/06/2012 20:31

vnmum - why have you got a dead cat behind you? Wink

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 23/06/2012 20:31

tea Thanks

I was looking in our little Sainbos today and they didn't have Total, i will have a look in a bigger one. There is a Lidl not too for as well so i may go for theirs as well.

The smoke salmon is such an obvious one, can't believe i didn't think of it!

It was really starting to get on my nerves!

SharonGless · 23/06/2012 20:33

Vnmum you look amazing! Are you at your goal weight now?

B cheese and spring onion omelette cooked in butter
L tuna mayo salad
Snack 2 bits of dark choc and a cocktail sausage!
D homemade chicken curry with cauliflower rice

Welcome everyone. Jan - sorry to hear yu are having a bad time. Support here in all guises but it is important to understand why you are eating in times of stress. I know that I comfort eat and reward myself wit food treats in the past. Have you got the idiot proof diet book? It really clicked with me and I understand my triggers better now and avoid them, or recognize them.

puffylovett · 23/06/2012 20:34

Struggling with eggs here too.
Vnmum you look amazing now! Wow :)
Betty get some meaty bones and slow cook them with onions and bay leaves. Sooooo good for you. Or do half a chicken, small amt egg noodles and some light green veg. Jewish penicillin :)

Jins · 23/06/2012 20:39

Whit woo at the skinny bird Grin

vnmum · 23/06/2012 20:49

Thanks guys. I hope no one thinks I am gloating or anything. I just thought it would be good for people to see how this woe can affect your body shape better than other diets Smile

BIWI The dead cat was my flop anywhere kitten Grin

sharon I do want to lose a bit more, maybe another 7lbs or so. Mainly so I can see more muscle definition from my hardwork at the gym

Shimbo · 23/06/2012 20:54

No way vnmum it is v inspiring and motivating to see your pics which really show a difference Smile. Where would you say most of your weight has been lost from or is it all over?
