Morning campers!

Today's sermon is about cheating. There's been plenty of it along the way and there will be plenty more of it in the future.

It is important to accept that this is and is going to be a fact, as (hopefully) this is about a way of eating, rather than a diet. That means that sometimes there will be occasions and circumstances where it's impossible to keep the carbs down. The classic is when you're invited to dinner and your hosts serve you something 'forbidden', like pasta or rice.

Every now and then you will find that you also have a 'fuck it' moment. Where, for whatever reason, you eat something you shouldn't. It happens.

So.

If you're going to do it, do it right!

If circumstances are beyond your control - e.g. the dinner party - don't stress about it. If you've deliberately gone off piste, don't feel guilty about it. Enjoy the moment while you're in it.

What is absolutely critical is what you do next.

Beware that you will crave carbs and don't let yourself spiral out of control into a mammoth carb fest! Make sure that the 2-3 days immediately afterwards are strictly low carb, and drink plenty of water. And avoid the scales for the next few days!

Here endeth the lesson.

Humphrey, give it time & don't lose faith.

I found I lost much slower this time than I did before. I am in my early 40s and I definitely lose slower now than I did when I was younger. I first low-carbed in my late 20s & the weight melted off me. I think 12 or so years on I was probably well on the road to insulin resistance too - meaning my body was over producing insulin because of all the sweet foods that I ate. This makes it harder to lose weight. However, I'm hoping that by sticking with this WOE, I'll re-train my body to stop pumping out so much insulin & I'll find sticking to a good weight or even losing a little more gets easier.

I've lost 2 stone since 2nd Jan, but it has been very, very slow. It is pretty much 1lb a week since the beginning of the year. Obviously some weeks I lost more & some I lost none. I even gained a few & then had to lose them again at one point. However, over the 25 weeks this year, it has been an overall loss.

Jins · 22/06/2012 12:15

At 5'2" and 9.5 you have a BMI of 24.

I'm the same height as you and have vivid memories of how slow weightloss was at this stage. I think that when you are into 'normal' BMI territory there is still excess bodyfat but it's slower to shift.

You will get there. I had two sticking points - 9.3 and 8.11 if I remember right. No idea why that was but it took ages to get past them and then the weight wooshed off again.

puffylovett · 22/06/2012 12:19

Jins I think you have the measure of me ! Grin

Interested in the dairy thing, as cheese and cream are the only bits I like (and seem to tolerate)

mummyduff · 22/06/2012 12:20

B- handful of pork scratchingsGrin god I have a real addiction to them now!!!
L- chicken salad
D- not sure as yet???

teaandthorazine · 22/06/2012 12:24

Humphrey - stick with it, it will come off. This is a very non-linear way of losing weight - I seem to hover around the same weight (give or take a lb or two) for ages, and then, whoooosh, off it all comes!

Plus, I agree that the less you have to lose, the slower it is. My BMI is now 23 Shock from 25.7 and I'm definitely slowing down now. It's not a bad thing tbh - losing too much too fast can be a problem.

Don't forget about inches vs. lbs as well. Even though my scales haven't shifted much recently, my skinny jeans (that I couldn't get into in March) are now properly loose around the waist, and my belt needs yet another hole punched in it - woohoo Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 22/06/2012 12:29

Thank you everyone. I do wonder about insulin resistance. It seems to be since my last pregnancy that my ability to shift weight fast has gone - and now I realise that my habit of losing half a stone and gaining it again repeatedly has perhaps buggered up everything.

I will keep going, I have lost my sugar cravings. This can only be a good thing.

I REALLY appreciate the support. I am very over emotional about my weight issues at the moment, due to the fact I was positively skinny when I got pregnant, and put on an enormous amount of weight in two months - a stone and a half. I wasn't even eating that much. I never sat down and ate a packet of biscuits or anything. And then I lost the baby. I think I need to be losing weight in order to feel in control again.

Jins · 22/06/2012 12:30

puffylovett - I've been doing this for years and I've done a few support threads elsewhere in my time. I've heard it all Wink

Don't confuse GI with low carb. Sweet potatoes have been heralded as being better than potatoes as they have slow release sugars. We don't care how slow the sugars are released. We don't eat them Grin

vnmum · 22/06/2012 12:31

Just back from the gym and I have been awarded the "Achiever of the month" award for May! Yay, So I can't be doing that badly even though I am impatient in myself.

PBB It is interesting how weight loss is slower the more diets you've done etc. At my largest I was eating so much high carb shit it was unbelievable. Loads of pasta, fast food, muffins, cream cakes and polishing off a 250g bar of dairy milk in one sitting every day more or less.

This is the first time I have tried low carbing and although I lost weight at first with WW I was still eating high carb shit or artificial sweetened stuff.

It is only now that I am reading more info on this WOE that I realise what I was doing to my body and that I may have caused some damage that will take a while to rectify. I often think 'if only' I had actually done atkins 10 years ago when I bought his first book (instead of reading it then putting back on bookshelf because I couldn't imagine not eating carbs) I would have been much healthier for those 10 years rather than getting fatter.

teaandthorazine · 22/06/2012 12:34

I always think with sweet potatoes, no matter how delicious they are, the clue is in the name Grin

PostBellumBugsy · 22/06/2012 12:41

Hi-5s vnmum for being achiever of the month - fantastic.

Agree. I'm on this WOE for good now. I'm sure I'll slip up every now & then, but I'm convinced it is the way to eat. Previously, I only did Atkins to lose weight & then went back to old habits and inevitably put the weight back on again. I am completely sold in this time to the overall health benefits, so really can't see myself eating all the crap I used to - because I know it is crap now!

Jins · 22/06/2012 13:21

Well done vnmum!

I don't think slip ups are a huge issue in the long term. When you reach goal you will have learned how to eat properly and if you do have a slip up it will be through choice. I know that if I'm out and there's no suitable food it's far better for me to buy some chocolate than to have anything with potatoes or rice in it. I handle sugar far better than starch and it's a quick blip and over with. Other people may find that it's better to eat a sandwich than to have chocolate.

What you are doing is learning how your body works and that has to be good

moonshine · 22/06/2012 13:23

I get my results on July 7th so not too long to wait.

I also am obsessed with porky scratchings btw, but they have to be Mr Porky ones!

leanbh21 · 22/06/2012 13:46

Well done vnmum that's great.

Humphrey I know where you're coming from. I've had multiple miscarriages and, thankfully, 3 DCs but there's something about getting your body back to its pre pregnancy state that I found really helped me start to look to the future.

Been doing well and sticking to Bootcamp the past few days. Finding I'm getting a bit more used to the different meals I can try on this. Got slightly caught out planning wise today when a 20 minute errand turned into a 3 hour expedition but although I had to stop to feed the kids, I was able to grab a bag of salad and some cheese slices from a nearby supermarket to managed not to slip up at all. After tolerating tuna last week I've got some salmon to try for dinner today. Think I may try the celeriac chips too and some oven roasted veg. Almost two weeks in now :)

puffylovett · 22/06/2012 14:43

Jins Grin love it

Humphrey my dp and I also suffer with insulin resistance and hypoglycaemia. Interestingly (but possibly completely irrelevant) when I started doing this I also started a v high dose fish oil, chromium and magnesium supps, all of which can help to resensitise insulin cell receptors. I lost weight that fortnight fast. Then I stopped them for hols, put on 5 lbs and its been a lot slower to drop them this week (also off the supps). I have restarted them today so will monitor out of interest.

puffylovett · 22/06/2012 14:44

Sorry to hear of sad losses, btw

puffylovett · 22/06/2012 14:45

Oh forgot to ask - if u don't have eggs for breakfast, what do you have?

Ds2 eczema worsening (he's bfed and allergic :()

I can do yoghurt really, not without cucumber carrot and a good hot spicy curry!

BIWItheBold · 22/06/2012 14:48

Humph - I'm the same height as you, and currently stuck at around 9.13. I'd love to be 9.5! You don't have much to lose, so it will come off slowly. Just stick with it.

Just so you can see how little the WOE is understood. Grin

Perfect timing as we are so brassic at mo and dh is panicking at shopping bill. off to stock up on low carb dried goods (if there is such a thing - advice welcome!) and healthy packed lunch stuff for ds1 yay!

BettySuarez · 22/06/2012 16:18

Thanks Smile

puffylovett · 22/06/2012 16:35

Ooh... I'll dig it out later! I think the recipe calls for coconut milk, ground flax and baking powder. I think I modified my last lot with almond but butter.. Will check!

I use either biocare mega EPA or Nutri Eskimo oil or Brainsharp. Am contem

puffylovett · 22/06/2012 16:36

teaandthorazine · 22/06/2012 18:02

But first, Charlie Bigham's Breton Chicken (2.5g carbs per 1/2 pack), spinach mornay and green beans (I'm on my own tonight so cba to cook, really). Oh, and writing a PowerPoint presentation - woohoo...
