Small things you do to help you loose weight?

Have realised I've just crept into my danger zone, from Look a Fabulously Curvy Person to Hmm bit of a Tubber so am reigning myself in a bit, am not starting a major diet or excercise regime as feel I should be able to do it by just living a bit more sensibly (not scarfing biscuits while heating DDs bottles at 3am may help). But just wondered what helpful day-to-day little things people do to help keep their weight down?

Drink a lot of water.
Move more :)

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 13/06/2012 22:00

I try to use stairs when I'm out instead of escalators.

canyou · 13/06/2012 22:02

I have a small plate it does work Grin also all biscuits etc are in clip lock boxes impossible to open with one hand, I prepare veg sticks in the morning for myself when doing the school lunches

BubbleBobble · 13/06/2012 22:02

I allow myself only one drink per day with calories in it. I drink diet drinks (yes I know they have calories, but the amount is negligible), herbal teas and water the rest of the time.

DottyDot · 13/06/2012 22:04

I cycle to work now instead of getting the train. 5 miles each way, takes me the same amount of time once I factor in the walk to the station and burns off about 1,200 calories a day!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/06/2012 22:08

Stopped drinking a litre of fruit juice a day.

Weighed out reccomended portion sizes so I could see how much I should be eating and they are tiny

HaveALittleFaith · 13/06/2012 22:09

When I worked on the third floor I climbed the stairs every day. Hard work but I was very toned for our wedding!
You should think about getting Paul Mckenna's I can make you thin. It's simple but essentially you think about what you're eating - chose wisely, concentrate, eat when you're hungry and learn to recognise comfort eating. There's a thread here where are group of us are doing it together, pop over and have a look!

Porridge for breakfast, keeps me full for ages.
Hot skimmed milk drink (latte or 1 spoon hot choc powder rather than the recommended 3) as a filling snack
Bread with smaller slices for sandwiches
Give DH the 'larger half' of the carbs with dinner, and I have more veg.
No diet foods, I eat what I want, but smaller portions

But what has really made a difference for me is noting down everything I eat, using myfitnesspal app on my phone. I think I was doing lots of mindless eating and picking at the fridge/DCs' leftovers etc before.

CiderwithBuda · 13/06/2012 22:12

No sugar and white carbs. Eat more fruit and veg. Eat more lean protein.

BubbleBobble - be careful with diet drinks. They may be low in calories but can seriously hinder weight loss.

marriednotdead · 13/06/2012 22:38

Drink water instead of any/everything else.

Have a big serving of salad with every meal, dressed with balsamic vinegar instead of salad cream.

Allow myself one fun size choc bar per day.

Stop eating bread.

Macchiato · 13/06/2012 22:40

Freeze grapes,they're like sweets!

I also slice up a fun sized chocolate bar and freeze it and just eat one slice if I get a sweet craving.

cairnterrier · 13/06/2012 22:43

Park as far away from the supermarket door as possible. Always take the stairs and never the lift. Walk the long way round to get anywhere. Stop as soon as I'm full, even if there is only one mouthful left on the plate. Split desert. Never eat the DCs left overs. Ask myself if I really want to eat it or am I bored, thirsty etc.

Eat 2 squares of dark chocolate every day - satisfies the chocolate craving and I could never eat a whole bar a la Dairy Milk stylee!

Have an espresso mid-morning rather than biscuits for a temporary boost.

popsypie · 13/06/2012 22:48

Brushing teeth early in the evening. My laziness at not wanting to brush again overrules my greediness! So no mindless telly snacking. Filing and buffing nails is also a distraction from eating and keeps hands busy. I rarely eat cos I am hungry, mainly it is boredom or habit Sad

YouOldSlag · 13/06/2012 22:51

Go on Wii Fit Plus even if it's for ten minutes- you'll see how long it takes to burn 10 calories and its keeps me away from the biscuit tin for days.

MateyM00 · 13/06/2012 22:53

three buscuits = 100 calories a day.

cut even that little amount out and after a year you will have saved 3650 calories!

small things add up to big things

MateyM00 · 13/06/2012 22:53

35600 calories! duh

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/06/2012 22:53

only eat 3 meals a day, and that's WW pointed meals. And drink a couple of glasses of wine. Without that I would eat 5x more calories in chocolate.

IcantSleep · 13/06/2012 22:54

The things I do are...
Put music on and dance with DD.
Run upstairs to go to the loo, rather than using the downstairs one.
Try and walk places rather than drive (haven't done this much lately because of the weather)
Generally just try and move more! Sounds silly, but I did read somewhere that you burn off twice as many calories if you stand, rather than sit.
If I'm hungry mid morning, I have a cup of tea instead of a snack.

notcitrus · 13/06/2012 22:55

Eat more veg. Partly because if I spend time munching them I don't get round to dessert while MrNC eats his. And keeping nice fruit in the house - again, occupies the times when I'd otherwise munch biccies.
And walking briskly. When I was at work, walking up to the fifth floor after lunch. Worked until I wad moved to the first, anyhow.

YouOldSlag · 13/06/2012 22:55

If you drink fruit tea or herbal tea, you will never want a biscuit or a piece of cake with it. it just doesn't go.

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/06/2012 22:56

oh and run 10k a week to mop up extra calories. It's surprising how little you need to eat to cancel out 800 calls!

OhNoMyFanjo · 13/06/2012 23:01

Drink lots more water. Remember tgat I do not need the same size portions as dh, put less on your plate means you will eat less.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 13/06/2012 23:03

walk extra up the stairs. parrk a little further away and walk. cut out one thing a day that is not good.

JacqueslePeacock · 13/06/2012 23:05

Why does drinking more water help you loose weight? Is it just that it makes you think you are full?

JacqueslePeacock · 13/06/2012 23:06

Ugh. Lose weight not loose weight. Obviously.
