Small things you do to help you loose weight?

Have realised I've just crept into my danger zone, from Look a Fabulously Curvy Person to Hmm bit of a Tubber so am reigning myself in a bit, am not starting a major diet or excercise regime as feel I should be able to do it by just living a bit more sensibly (not scarfing biscuits while heating DDs bottles at 3am may help). But just wondered what helpful day-to-day little things people do to help keep their weight down?

I do exercise (running and resistance work) but small things I do which probably help me maintain a healthy weight are...

I'm teetotal
I never diet, no food is banned
I walk everywhere as I don't drive but I also turn down offers of lifts and encourage dh and dd to walk with me instead of driving anywhere. I walk miles every day
I carry ds in a sling exclusively (no pram/pushchair)
I carry a bottle of water with me at all times and sip regularly
I'm bfing
I eat when hungry and stop when full
I enjoy food
I put a lot of effort into housework (scrub floors instead of mop, shampoo carpets regularly etc. I actively do this in order to add in extra daily exercise)

A lot of mine have been mentioned already but the most effective probably are:

  • no wine/ alcohol mon to thurs (has saved us a fortune too...)
  • smaller plate or half portion first, wait ten minutes, go back for more if still hungry (rarely am)
  • do NOT eat the same amount of anything that dh eats...
  • drink water, often. Keep a glass by the tap for refills.
  • I have a sweet tooth, so try and go for fruit first over actual cake, biscuits and chocolate. I know it's full of sugar but a hell of a lot less fat.

Walk whenever you can

Do some exercise! As well as making me feel good (afterwards!), I know I will be less inclined to cheat/snack afterwards as it would have been a waste of time then!

I don't have cake, crisps, chocolate, bread or biscuits in the house. I do keep an "emergency" bar of chocolate in the car Wink which makes me think "hm do I really want that chocolate enough to get dressed and go out in the rain?"
My sweet treat is a sliced apple with no added sugar crunchy peanut butter on it

I eat lots of protein which fills me and I drink loads of water

I do sets of squats while I brush my teeth...30 straight, 30 rapid for top set of teeth, same for bottom then slow sets while rinsing. You look an idiot if spotted though... Then I record total squats for each week on my iPad - I also record my weight. Keeps me motivated.
Then all the other stuff mentioned. Try to eat list of veg/ fruit, real food not processed. Lots of water. I eat shedloads of ice-cream though, I have a weakness:-(

I definitely think that one source of unexpected calories is tea and coffee. Cafe ones are full of calories but 'home' ones soon mount up and do encourage biscuit eating Grin. I started on the fruit teas and
Decaf black coffee and am convinced that has made a big difference.

I no longer eat salad dressings, or things like coleslaw and potato salad. I add lemon juice or balsamic vinegar to salads for a bit of 'zing'.
I fry eggs by using spray oil in a non stick frying pan. Much nicer like that IMO.
I have started doing exercises during the ad breaks when I'm watching TV. [things like push ups, squats, star jumps etc]

i'm sure i saw/read somewhere that people often mistake thirst for feeling peckish.

so i try to drink water before reaching for a snack, and most often than not water/drink is enough, and i don't need the snack.

One thing that I do on a day to day basis is watch my added sugar intake. Try by eating only 3 items per day with 3 grams or less with sugar in it. You would be surprised what has a TON of added sugars!

No added sugar jelly, when I crave something sweet a have a pot of that, 6 calls a pot.

I have been working out where my worst areas are, so I think I eat too much in the evening so now I have

Light breakfast as late as possible
Light lunch
Banana for a mid afternoon snack

Reasonable dinner, generally lots of salad and a chicken breast

Bowl of grapes, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries with a muller light yogurt dumped on it

Fruit and nut bar

Options hot chocolate (for bed)

Seems to be working so far.

I've found a lot of little things make a difference

  • drink lots of water throughout the day
  • cut down on portion sizes
  • try not to eat carbs late at night
  • a little exercise everyday this doesn't need to be excessive, I was fortunate to attend a talk by Dr Chris Steele recently and he said that 20 mins walking a day was enough to make a difference
