Small things you do to help you loose weight?

Have realised I've just crept into my danger zone, from Look a Fabulously Curvy Person to Hmm bit of a Tubber so am reigning myself in a bit, am not starting a major diet or excercise regime as feel I should be able to do it by just living a bit more sensibly (not scarfing biscuits while heating DDs bottles at 3am may help). But just wondered what helpful day-to-day little things people do to help keep their weight down?

Jacques- maybe it's because sometimes when you're thirsty you think you're actually hungry and eat something instead of drinking something.

zlist · 13/06/2012 23:35

Write down what you eat in a diary with times - I don't mean calorie count just write a note. Makes me think what I really want or whether I want anything at all.

qo · 13/06/2012 23:42

If you really want to know how to lose weight, and how your body really works, watch the documentary Fat-head. It's fascinating

BsshBossh · 14/06/2012 00:21

I eat anything I want but less of it - portion control. Also, learning to tune into when I'm genuinely hungry and stop eating before I feel stuffed.

ErikNorseman · 14/06/2012 05:34

It's easy to mistake thirst for hunger. Drinking a glass of water also fills your stomach and the more water you drink the less you retain.

VikingVagine · 14/06/2012 05:53

Housework. I give DH and the kids the less physical jobs and keep the energetic ones for myself.

fatlazymummy · 14/06/2012 06:53

Definitely portion control and cutting down on snacks.
I also try and fit in little bits of exercise whenever I have a few minutes spare. Things like stepping, squats, yoga stretches etc. I believe all exercise is good. Even using a few extra calories a few times a day does add up.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 14/06/2012 06:55

Brisk 20-30 minute walk at lunchtime.

Vajazzler · 14/06/2012 06:59

Things i do that help me lose weight

*porridge for breakfast
*fruit to snack on especially if i'm going somewhere that has temptation
*check my portion sizes
*Serve veggies/salad first and make sure they cover half of my plate
*choose the leanest meat. (i follow ww and turkey has the least points so i eat it a lot)
*after dinner i have a bowl of fruit before i have anything else

don't eat between meals

eat off a smaller plate - this makes. Big difference

don't leave packets of food open where you can see them, you will pick at them

be aware of your triggers- mine is when I'm on the phone, that's whenI nibble

exercise more but don't reward yourself by eating more

MrsNouveauRichards · 14/06/2012 07:27

I did the BIWI low carb bootcamp, and it kickstarted my healthier eating.

I try to eat more veg
I don't add carbs to meal because it looks like it needs it - meat and salad doesn't need potato for example, or if I have curry I wil have rice or naan, not both, if we have pizza for dinner, I have some pizza and a plate of salad, instead of huge plate of pizza and garlic bread.
Drink more water.
If snacking in an evening, put some crisps in a bowl and take them to sitting room, don't take the bag.
Stop drinking coke, that is 100 cals each glass.

One thing that has helped me change my attitude to food, is looking at it as fuel, what does my body need? Trying to eat more good food rather than limit my junk food iyswim? Seems to be working, 7lbs gone now :)

WillSingForCake · 14/06/2012 07:54

Cut down on alcohol. I used to drink a couple of bottles of wine over a week, and cut it down to a couple of glasses per week. I lost about a stone quite quickly without making any other changes to diet or activity.

juneau · 14/06/2012 07:58

Don't buy biscuits, crisps or chocolate.
Take the stairs.
Leave the car at home and walk - or get off the bus a stop or two early.
Exchange sugar for sweetener (try out different ones until you find one you like - some are foul).
If you're mooching around the kitchen thinking of having a snack, have a glass of water instead.
If you're really determined to have a biscuit or some other snack food, think 'I'll have one in a minute' and keep thinking that until the craving goes.
Have protein at every meal - it will fill you up more than carbs.
Cut out as much sugar as you can from your diet.
Don't start the day with sugary cereal - think whole grains, dairy, protein.

juneau · 14/06/2012 07:59

If you must drink alcohol, have a small glass of wine. Don't drink alcopops or spirits - they're really high in calories.

milk · 14/06/2012 08:17

If you snack while watching television, paint your nails instead :)

milk · 14/06/2012 08:18

juneau- "Don't buy biscuits, crisps or chocolate." - are you trying to take away SherlockGnomes reason to live?!?

I say buy half the quantities of biscuits, crisps or chocolate per week.

ZebraLeg · 14/06/2012 08:22

I always had to have a couple of biscuits with my cup of tea. So now I don't drink tea!

juneau · 14/06/2012 08:22

Okay, well how about only buy 'treat size' bags or switching from milk to dark chocolate then? I realise we all need to have small treats and that complete abstinence is unsustainable for most people (myself included!)

Hervana · 14/06/2012 08:33

No sugar in tea/coffee
No drinking during the week

MrsJohnDeere · 14/06/2012 08:36

Walk more. Makes a huge difference to my weight.

Keep busy. Less time to snack.

No fizzy drinks, even the ones with sweeteners rater than sugar.

vvviola · 14/06/2012 08:59

Knitting. Grin

Seriously. It was one of the reasons I took it up again. I'm a mindless eater, I'll go through a full pack of biscuits without realising and I'll keep getting up & down to raid the kitchen when I watch tv. When I knit my hands are busy and I don't want to get crumbs/grease on my knitting.

Doesn't always work, but it helps Grin

WeShouldOpenABar · 14/06/2012 09:20

increase your protein and veg at mealtimes and decrease your carbs

get massive wine glasses, this might only work for me, i fill a wine glass with a can of diet sprite and just enough wine so i can taste it, it takes ages to drink but i still feel like im getting my wine. sometimes if i reallllly need the wine i have a small glass first then switch to spritzer

RunOrRioja · 14/06/2012 09:49

Use fry light instead of oil
Exercise 3 times a week
Use an awful lot of slimming world recipes
Eat lean meat with no visible fat
Eat fruit after every meal

Am a trim size 10 but if I don't do all of this I would put on weight because I absolutely LOVE food...
