Hi
After a bit of advice, I have shredded on and off for a while now, as well as other stuff (running, cycling and swimming, Boost fat/metabolism and occasional Zumba). I bought Ripped in 30 last week and did first one last night. It seemed so easy, do I stay on Level 1 for rest of this week or move up to Level 2? Not bragging at all, I am in need of a strict regime for 4 weeks with max results, it just seemed very much like Level 1 shred.
Also, I only have 2kg weights (and some wrist/ankle weights) where does everyone get "good" weights from? I can't afford to spend much but have my holiday in 4 weeks so I want to make this count!

SpringGoddess · 24/07/2012 08:57

lizzylou I'd move on to the second level or increase weights. I run and attend an intervals class - did day 1 level 1 of the shred yesterday - my arm aches a little but that's it and I'm tempted to move to level 2 which I know from experience leaves me feeling like I've worked my butt off - literally.

notyummy · 24/07/2012 09:01

CHST - sending you lots of strength for what will be a tough day.

Ali - I echo what CHST says. Sometimes you just can't fit it all in!

Lizzy - I think L1 Ripped is easier than L1 Shred tbh. It's as if people complained that she didn't spend much time explaining the exercises for L1 Shred, so she thought that she would do an 'elementary' level for Ripped as an intro for those new to exercise. With that in mind I would move to L2, bearing in mind that there is quite a difference between the two!! I would have thought Amazon or Argos would be a good place to look for weights?

Did my fourth Insanity session yesterday after a run on Sunday. Again, a really tough one and my lower back is twingeing a bit today from a succession of burpees/burpees into press-ups/burpees into press-up straight into mountain climbers. This one had a 15/20 minutes hard core cardio session with literally no breaks. Straight from burpees to press-up jacks to jump squats to high knees to sprinting on the spot to standing mountain climbers....(you get the picture.) The workouts follow a rough pattern of a 10 minute warm up, which is difficult in itself - a series of cardio moves that take about 2 1/2 minutes each time, which he repeats 4 times getting faster and faster. Really gets your heart rate up but not much strength/plyometric stuff included. Think very fast jumping jacks/sprints etc. Then a fairly long break for deep stretches. Then about 20 minutes full on cardio/strength stuff that is really, really tough. So far none of the sessions have been longer than 40 minutes - and when i say 40 minutes, it def means that, including warm up and stretches. There are some session in the whole programme that are longer as I have seen them listed. I like the clock on the screen that tells you how long you have left overall. What I am finding tricky is because I don't know any of the workouts yet I am not sure how hard to push myself for certain stages as i don't know sometimes whether I have 2 minutes left before a 30 second break - or 10 seconds!

gypsyfloss · 24/07/2012 09:02

lizzylou not a Ripped expert but lots seem to move on from l1 quite swiftly as it is easy enough if you've shredded before. Perhaps you could give l2 a go instead?

My weights are from sports direct I think , ranging from 1.5 to 5kg. They are ok but cheap and have a seam that runs down the hand part which can be uncomfortable at times.

Someone who is into Ripped will be along shortly to give proper advice ; it never clicked with me - JM is far too bossy in it :)

Lizzylou · 24/07/2012 09:14

Thanks all, and here was me thinking I must have been fitter than I'd thought! Blush
It was just such an anticlimax, I was all ready for it to be Level 3 Shred+ and yes, you're right Notyummy, it was like a back to basics Level 1 Shred.
Level 2 tonight it is then! With a quick Argos/SportsDirect trip to get heavier weights beforehand.

In awe of you even attempting Insanity Notyummy, it just looks way too hardcore for me.
SpringGoddess, I really loathe Level 2 Shred, I did it again for the first time in ages last week and remembered why, good luck with that!

SpringGoddess · 24/07/2012 10:37

lizzy I decided to be sensible and patient and do level 1 Natalie today and I worked harder. My right shoulder muscle aches and I want to give it time to recover. I dislike level 2 too, but i feel that's a good sign that it's making me work harder. On your experience I've now bought Ripped Week2 and week1 for my iPad for holidays next week, would hate to be stuck with a workout that didn't keep me on track. Would prefer to run, but sometimes that can be tricky in a strange town, I think the place we are staying has a gym but I find the treadmill completely sole destroying.

ExcitedElectrons · 24/07/2012 12:25

Does anyone else who does ripped feel so sick at the end at the stretching part? I feel so faint, lightheaded and sick at the end of every level it's unreal :( that can't be good can it!?

VenetiaLanyon · 24/07/2012 13:00

I still get a lot out of RI30 L1, as I beef it up e.g. using weights for cardio, double-speed cardio etc, add more difficult biots to the abs moves etc. Can definitely still get a good workout. I do the same thing with Shred L1.

threestepsforward · 24/07/2012 17:20

Afternoon all Smile

Lizzy good luck with L2 and upwards. L1 Ripped is not too hard, but L2 steps it up (mountain climbers followed by plank jacks for first cardio!). And yes, be prepared for mucho shouting, she has stepped that up a gear too Grin

Hey excited! Feeling sick I think can be quite common after pushing yourself. But only you can know if it's good sick or bad sick!? L2, L3 and L4 of Ripped are all pretty intense, so could make sense for you to feel like that. I remember having to stop for a breather the first few times I did L3, which isn't that usual for me, so it could be a normal response. Could you go back to Shred or anything you've done without feeling sick and see if the same happens? If you're at all worried though don't carry on and maybe ask GP for advice?

CHST hugs to you and hope today is as easy as it can be. xx

I'm gearing up for Day 2 of Turbofire - today is only 15 mins HIIT which is 1 minute all-out followed by a rest, rinse and repeat - I think there are 9 hits in all ('fire drills'!!). Wish me luck!

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if someone has already talked about this but can someone tell me how many days of shred does it take for your body to stop aching. I've done level 1 for two days and can hardly move! Do I just keep pushing through or have a rest day?
Thanks

threestepsforward · 24/07/2012 18:03

Hi slp!

It should take around 4 days or so for the aching to subside. If you can bear it keep going but take a day off if it's too much. If you can tell it's general muscle ache rather than an actual injury, then try and carry on. I was walking sideways downstairs and looked like John Wayne for the first few days!

Good luck Smile

slp123 · 24/07/2012 18:13

Thanks threestepsforward. It is just muscle ache (many that havent been used for a ling time!) so will do day 3 this evening.

Lizzylou · 24/07/2012 18:57

Threesteps, I did level 1 ripped again. I followed venetia's plan and used weights during cardio etc as I wanted to make sure I was ready for level 2!
Slp my thighs and chest ached for about 3 days when I first started shredding, it will go though. Perhaps do extra stretching?
Spring how is your shoulder now?
Tomorrow is ripped level 2, will have an evening to myself so noone to laugh at me sweating and spluttering!

SpringGoddess · 24/07/2012 20:37

Excited - I hate jillians stretches - my core is so weak I can barely sit up with my legs apart. It's something I really need to work on.
slp I think there is some debate as to whether you should work through muscle ache or whether you should rest and allow recovery. You are supposed to be more inclined towards injury when your body is unfit, frinjury will derail your plans more than taking it easy, i am plagued with injuries. My bootcamp instructor suggests going for a walk when muscles ache - he belongs to the keep everything moving school of thought. When I have muscle ache - every week after bootcamp Wink I find it best to take a rest day and then get back into it. Don't push yourself too hard when you're sore.
Lizzy shoulder is about the same which is good, it's been getting a bit of a hammering - I will do a proper push up this summer, I will, I will, I will! Look forward to your review of Ripped level 2.

threestepsforward · 25/07/2012 10:40

There's truth in what spring said slp. If your body is really cross with you, and you think it may not forgive you if you pushed on through, then take a day off Grin Did you do it in the end though? How did it go? I reckon in the next few days the aches will be gone. You'll still get some aches, but they will feel good and you know it will be because your body's changing

Excited how are you? Was fretting that I'd encouraged you to carry on despite feeling sick! I think it was the Biggest Loser I remember, where the guys were feeling sick towards the end of their workouts but were driven on by the sadist coach. That's what I meant by 'good sick feeling'! Any other kind definitely step back for a bit and see what's going on. Hope you're feeling okay. Re the light-headedness I've had that one or two times - I think it's the intensity of the workout.

Well I did my HIIT 15 yesterday and yes that was tough! I'm sure I wasn't giving it the 110% she was asking for but I didn't do too bad. What has become clear is I definitely need a pair of trainers for this turbofire stuff. The injury potential is much higher due to the speed and the jumps and twists. Seems most urgent for the HIIT stuff so will hold off doing more until the weekend when I can get my credit card back out. My credit card is also having a lot of exercise recently!!

Have a good day all, beautiful out there Smile

notyummy · 25/07/2012 10:47

Shock at Threesteps doing Turbofire without trainers. You nutter!

Re the sickness thing Excited - are you eating enough, or too soon beforer exercise? The light headedness/sickness could be possibly as a result of that. I wouldn't have thought feeling like that at the end of every single workout is a good thing, so perhaps get it checked out? I feel 'wrung out' immediately afterwards, but within 2/3 mins (i.e by the end of the stretches) I am usually feeling sweaty, calm - and smug - although I still might have the shakes in a particular body part if I have been pushing it really hard.

Second time round for the first 5 Insanity workouts for me now. Plyometric cardio circuit later.....

threestepsforward · 25/07/2012 10:54

Now I've seen it in writing notyummy it does seem incredibly stupid! I much prefer bare feet and could get away with it for JM, but not for Turbofire so I will have to get myself shod.

Good luck with Insanity later, I love hearing your reports!

OP posts:
threestepsforward · 25/07/2012 10:56

Oops, meant to ask the thread, can anyone recommend some good trainers (hopefully not to ££) for me? There are so many kinds out there and I don't know where to start.... Cross-trainers maybe?

OP posts:
SpringGoddess · 25/07/2012 10:57

I'm developing the same pain in my mid back I had last time I did the shred, her exercises are pretty similar to my weekly bootcamp sessions apart from the way she stretches in a sitting position, so I'm going to stretch the way I normally do after a Bootcamp session and see if that helps.

Dd is taking a photo of me every morning before I shred, will be interested to see before and after shots - is anyone else doing similar?

notyummy · 25/07/2012 11:08

Goddess - what a great idea with the pictures! I haven't done it but wish I had. My lower back/sacro-iliac joint (buttock/hip area) is prone to niggling and occasionally gets really bad. I haven't worked out what really tweaks it, but I avoid overstriding when running and if it really ramps up then I don't don't anything too intense (like Insanity) asnd stick to slow runs, pilates and more controlled Jillian stuff like NMTZ (without some of the abs stuff that strains my lower back.) If I do that for a few days it seems to recede. Fingers crossed Insanity doesn't cause me any major problems. If i am honest, it is stiff a lot of the time after I have been sitting (work or commutting in the car.) I must looik like an old lady when I initially get up - but I am fine when I get going and can do all sorts of things!

gingercat12 · 25/07/2012 12:43

SpringGoddess Thanks for telling me about the bootcamp.

Gypsyfloss I have decided to wear my slightly loose swimsuit, I just love it too much. It has a got a skirt, etc. There is one on ebay, but that is a size too small. I might still go for it.

gingercat12 · 25/07/2012 12:46

Insanity sounds a bit too much for me. Maybe if I could do all my JM dvds again on a Basheerah / Natalie level (yeah, right - not in this lifetime).

Excited I used to feel sick at the end of L2 6W6P for the first 4-5 times, but it is gone now. You do need to be careful. I always wait at least an hour after dinner with the exercise.

notyummy · 25/07/2012 12:52

Yes Ginger - I used to get a burning/indigestion type sensation in my throat after L2 6W6P, which has now subsided. I think it was the frantic last section where you are facing down on the floor (moguls/side planks/mountain climbers) that used to do that to me.

slp123 · 25/07/2012 18:20

I wimped out but glad I did as could hardly move this morning. After a really long stretch session I felt lots better so will be shredding again this evening.
I think I need to take the advice of stretching more after each session.

Greedygirl · 25/07/2012 18:54

I sometimes feel sick after the harder workouts!

Well I didn't manage a shred whilst I was away but I did go for a run by the seaside this morning' Slightly ruined by all the rubbish I have been eating between lectures. Determined to eat healthier foods for the rest of the week. On the way back home now.
