Bootcamp Week 4 - Come Whine With Me

BIWItheBold · 07/05/2012 12:00

Welcome everyone!

Now we're into the difficult weeks - those of us who are actually in week 4. You may have found that your weight loss slowed down last week or even - as for me - has gone back up again.

Don't panic!

This is very common. Keep on keeping on (my mantra for this WOE) and things will start to happen for you again soon.

Don't think it's all falling apart and 'treat' yourself by cheating. That will only exacerbate things, and you will very definitely be reporting back here with a weight loss or - worse - disappearing altogether, thoroughly disenchanted with yourself and the whole low carb thang.

If you're gaining, or not seeing any weight loss, have a long, hard look at what you were eating last week. Did you relax too much, if you moved to Bootcamp Light? Have you allowed carb creep to happen?

If you're doing as I suggested and keeping a food/drink diary, compare last week with your first week. Why not go back to what you ate/drank in that first week - especially if it was a week when you definitely did see a loss?

And remember, weeks 1 and 2 are weeks where you are primarily losing fluid. From weeks 3 onwards, we are now dealing with the fat - and the going will, naturally, be a lot tougher.

Reasonable, long-term and sustainable weight loss is 1-2lbs per week. I know that doesn't sound a lot, but that's 2-4 packs of lard.

Come and share what's working for you - how are you feeling about this WOE now, now that you're a bit more used to it? What tips can you give to your fellow MN Bootcampers?

What's frustrating you? How can we help to make it better, or work more easily for you?

morning, I didnt disappear because I had been naughty - I had an emergency in Scotland and have been up there all week (until Wednesday this week)

Back home now - where it is much easier to eat this way. Bought my sis in law the books, recipe book and IPD and she has started too. I didnt just buy them because she needed to lose weight, she had asked me about this WOE and after explaining it all I said I would buy her the books and help her. She isnt a MNer (as far as I know) so although she is doing it, she doesnt have the support that we do.

Just to keep you enthused & help anyone flagging see the long-term benefits of this way of eating. I've been LC since 2nd Jan.

These are all the benefits I've noticed:

I've lost nearly 2 stone
My skin looks great - not one hormonal breakout in 5.5 months
My hair looks great
No mid afternoon energy slumps
Brain fog all gone
I don't fart at all
My IBS has virtually disappeared
I'm hardly ever hungry & I think about food so much less
I sleep really well & don't feel tired when I wake up

Checking in from the cardiology ward Shock
Nothing too worrying, but had chest pains so it needed checking out. They are sure it's inflammation of my ribs from the lupus but it could be inflammation round my heart. Waiting on results.
Low carbing has taken a back seat obviously as all I had to eat in A&E (there from 5pm until I got to the ward at 2am) was a bag of midget gems, and my gluten free breakfast was cornflakes and a banana (which has left my mouth feeling really bizarre). Never thought I'd miss my eggy offerings!

Waiting on test results but will hopefully be home today sometime. Lunch will be a salad, and I imagine dinner will be omelette, the NHS gluten free offering of choice, so not all bad! But I don't think the cardiology ward is the place to ask for lard fried in butter with a dressing of oil :o

WillieWaggledagger · 11/05/2012 11:18

oh my goodness lacka i hope you're ok

teaandthorazine · 11/05/2012 12:11

Lacka - all the best, sending hugs or vibes or whatever is acceptable on MN these days!

Jax, hope things are ok with you too.

PostBellumBugsy · 11/05/2012 12:30

Blimey Lacka - that's got to be a first. Giving a carb intake update from the cardiology ward. Hope there is nothing wrong with your heart - although pain from the lupus, doesn't sound great either. Hope you are feeling better and home soon.

MNP · 11/05/2012 12:47

Home soon hopefully Lacka

LackaDAILYcarb · 11/05/2012 12:51

Just heard, blood tests ok, so nothing wrong with my heart, but waiting on rheumatology now.
I'm alright, just bored. Though it was nice not to have to deal with squawking children this morning Wink

NotMostPeople · 11/05/2012 13:36

Am tucking into leftover shepherds pie (celariac mash) for my lunch today. Why I didn't think of doing this for lunch until BIWI pointed it out I don't know. Honestly I give up on myself sometimes.

How long do we stay on bootcamp light or is this it now?

SharonGless · 11/05/2012 14:33

First things first, Lacks glad to hear the heart has been checked out and hope you feel better soon.

My name is Sharon Gless and I have sinned in a big way Sad

jan2011 · 11/05/2012 17:59

day 2 - missing my usual loads of apples and pear snacks during the day - but realised they nearly have 20g of carbs each, wish there was a way to have them! (maybe alternate days?)

bf fruit and yoghurt
lunch cheese and sardine salad
snack cottage cheese and sugar snap peas
dinner salmon and veg

ive realised im not meant to be having veg either (dukan) but im doing my best at the minute

Thegoddessblossom · 11/05/2012 18:37

and a packet of macadamia nuts Sad

Thegoddessblossom · 11/05/2012 18:38

3g per pack

jan2011 · 11/05/2012 19:01

oh yummy i love those nuts!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 11/05/2012 19:21

thanks teaand been a horrid week or so, but all for the best. I had to take my Dad to a nursing home. He is too dangerous to be left alone, requiring continual care and my Mum isnt fit to look after him now. The whole reason I had to dash up was she got rushed into hospital last Friday evening.

My heart is broken, but I'm being strong, stoical and 'getting on with things'

Been good although I also sinned big time today - scoffed a bag of mini eggs. No idea why - they have been here for over a month and I havent been tempted but today I ate them. Blush

oh well.

And tomorrow I am at Cookery School...

Thegoddessblossom · 11/05/2012 19:25

Hi Jax. Does your Dad have dementia? My darling mum is in a mental ward of a hospital, been there over a year. Alzheimers. And they found a lump in her breast last week, (some of you may remember me referring to "having reasons" for having gin for tea?) in the same place she had breast cancer before. waiting to find out what it is.

BIWI - bit more of life getting in the way n'est ce pas?

Thegoddessblossom · 11/05/2012 19:27

feel free not to answer those prying questions by the way!

BIWItheBold · 11/05/2012 20:21

I'm so sorry to hear about everyone's woes Sad. And yes, Thegoddess, life really does get in the way sometimes. Ultimately we have to remember that some things are more important than what we're shoving down our gobs at that precise moment in time.

jan2011 - we're not doing Dukan here - and personally I have grave misgivings about it as a sustainable way to eat healthily as well as lose weight, so I'm glad to see that you're eating veg and salad! (But note - sugarsnap peas are 7g carbs per 100g, so they are quite carby)

NotMostPeople - Grin - things that are obvious to others aren't always obvious to you!

Re where next after Bootcamp Light? Really this is up to you. If you've reached a weight that you're happy with, then obviously the task is to maintain it. Everyone is different, and the level of carbs that you can eat daily before you begin to re-gain weight will be different too. The best thing is to experiment. Introduce higher carb foods gradually and see what happens. If you know you're going to eat something really carby, then try and go back to Bootcamp principles before/immediately afterwards, so that you minimise any potential weight gain.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 11/05/2012 21:48

hi goddess yes, is the short answer. He had a stroke about 5 years ago, quite bad, but made a good recovery - then another couple over the past few years with some little mini ones inbetween. This has caused a rapid form of dementia which has increased over the past year. He knows who I am - but doesnt recognise me iykwim. He also said he didnt have a daughter to my sister while I Was there, but then she said "young JAx and I are just off to the shop" he said "oh, is she here?" I'd been there myself looking after him for nearly 3 days by this time. Sad

oh - its awful, he was slowly killing my Mum, who isnt in good health either, but she wouldnt have him put into a home until recently. Dad is up and down all night, sometimes not using his chair lift to get upstairs.

heartstart · 12/05/2012 08:58

Jas - my Dad sounds v similar it's awful isn't it. I'm sure that once he has settled in and your Mum has had a rest things will ease a bit.

Thegoddessblossom · 12/05/2012 09:11

Happy to start a thread elsewhere if it would help to share experiences Jax? [hugs]

I am 9.5 again. Which is annoying. Would rather be 9.3. I know in the great scheme of things this is 2 measly pounds but it is still annoying.

All benefits of this WOE still apply however.

BIWI - I think I am pretty strict. TBH if I can't have 1 glass of red, a handful of nuts and 2 squares of very very dark choc as my nightly treats, I don't think I would want to do this. Cannot it really be this that is stallling me? I dunno. It must be I guess. Oh well as long as I don't gain weight and can continue eating the way I am I'm ok with that. would rather be 9.3 though

Thegoddessblossom · 12/05/2012 09:13

B: 3 egg and smoked salmon omelette with plum tomatoes and a dollop of mayo.

heartstart · 12/05/2012 09:15

I have had a spectacular fall of the low carb wagon and paid the price so on the basis of every cloud etc I have a really clear idea what carbs do to my energy and mood.

Yesterday I went to Wahaca and chose low carb chicken and salad. I had been drinking water all day and was waxing lyrical to a friend about this WOE. I had just bought a bra in a smaller size and was feeling good. On the menu was an almond milk drinK which I stupidly chose because almonds are low carb aren't they.!! I took an enormous drink of the milk and then realised that it was disgustingly sweet and had loads of sugar in. I ask how it was made it has 10 tsp of white sugar in, within 30 min I felt rough and later was really hungry so ate chips and a big tea (all low carb) but a lot. Had to go to bed because I felt so tired.

Anyway lesson learnt and am back on track this am...
