Bootcamp Week 4 - Come Whine With Me

Welcome everyone!

Now we're into the difficult weeks - those of us who are actually in week 4. You may have found that your weight loss slowed down last week or even - as for me - has gone back up again.

Don't panic!

This is very common. Keep on keeping on (my mantra for this WOE) and things will start to happen for you again soon.

Don't think it's all falling apart and 'treat' yourself by cheating. That will only exacerbate things, and you will very definitely be reporting back here with a weight loss or - worse - disappearing altogether, thoroughly disenchanted with yourself and the whole low carb thang.

If you're gaining, or not seeing any weight loss, have a long, hard look at what you were eating last week. Did you relax too much, if you moved to Bootcamp Light? Have you allowed carb creep to happen?

If you're doing as I suggested and keeping a food/drink diary, compare last week with your first week. Why not go back to what you ate/drank in that first week - especially if it was a week when you definitely did see a loss?

And remember, weeks 1 and 2 are weeks where you are primarily losing fluid. From weeks 3 onwards, we are now dealing with the fat - and the going will, naturally, be a lot tougher.

Reasonable, long-term and sustainable weight loss is 1-2lbs per week. I know that doesn't sound a lot, but that's 2-4 packs of lard.

Come and share what's working for you - how are you feeling about this WOE now, now that you're a bit more used to it? What tips can you give to your fellow MN Bootcampers?

What's frustrating you? How can we help to make it better, or work more easily for you?

thegoddess - I hope you're also eating plenty of fat?

Trying to BIWI - hard to know what to eat without eating loads of cheese or dairy, which I am tryin not to do. I am cooking everything in butter. Ate the skin on the chicken thighs last night....

Have just had full fat total yoghurt for breakfast with a few blackberries.

9.4 this morning - so a pound off from the weekend, and a pound to go to be at "normal" maintenance weight, although would love to get to 9 stone. Always seem to stop at 9.3 though....which is ok I guess. I FEEL slimmer though.

Semi row/heated discussion with DH last night. I started reading out your comment about fat being ok BIWI, and he was all "oh it's just your latest fad, like Harcombe was last year and low fat was before that, this too shall pass, it's all just the latest trend" etc. So annoying. And so unsupportive. Angry

BIWItheBold · 09/05/2012 08:24

Fattier meats and adding mayo also helps!

Get hold of a copy of Escape the Diet Trap by Dr John Briffa - that will help persuade him. If you can face it, reading the Diet Delusion is a devastating critique of the whole 'low fat brigade' - the evidence has always been there that carbohydrate is at the root of so many evils - but the scientists, and then the politicians, have chosen to overlook that in the favour of demonising fat.

Once the assertions had been made, with conviction, and the politicians and the media got involved, anyone who dared to try and speak out against them, or offer alternative evidence was pilloried and isolated from the scientific community. John Yudkin, a British scientist/writer was one such. And just look at the way Dr Atkins has been portrayed in the media.

Sadly, your DH's views are not surprising - we have been fed the story about fat for the last 30 years.

Has anyone else got greasier hair than normal on this way of eating? It's fine on the day I wash it but the following day, it's greasy. Which means I'm having to wash it every day. Which is a pain as it takes me ages to dry it.

2 weeks bootcamp finished for me today and I've lost 7lb.

PostBellumBugsy · 09/05/2012 09:35

BIWI, so glad to hear you are enjoying The Diet Dellusion. It is an amazing book & a real eye opener. If you were evangelical before, you will be bursting at the seams once you've ploughed your way through it.

For anyone looking for a more easily digestible version (to throw at DH's or other naysayers), which is quicker to read, then Taubes "Why we get fat & what to do about it" is excellent.

For all those who have weight loss that has slowed, don't panic. Just stick with it. Don't lose the faith & start letting too many carbs creep in.

BIWItheBold · 09/05/2012 09:43

Way to go, LF! (I haven't noticed the greasier hair - although given that I've been doing it on and off for a long time, it's possible that my body has got used to it)

PBB - my face is Shock as I'm reading it! Mind you, I can only manage about 20-30 pages at any one time, and I'm aware that much of the significance of the detail is passing me by.

It took me ages to read BIWI. Some bits I really struggled with, like all the cholesterol stuff. It was way beyond my o'level biology!!! However, I stuck with it and had to read some bits several times over & even now, 4 years after I first read it, I'll refer back to it! I've even made notes in the margins!

BIWItheBold · 09/05/2012 09:55

Yes, parts of it are a bit like wading through treacle!

Am hoping my copies of Briffa and Taubes will be arriving today. have ordered Why We Get Fat rather than Diet Delusion as don't think I have the time for DD! But am really looking forward to reading them and will try to get dp to have a look too.

He is cautiously supportive - the main thing he can't get his head around is lack of fruit. He thinks that fruit is a cure-all and can't understand why I'm not scarfing down bananas all day! He is very slim but eats tonnes of crap and has a v strong family history of diabetes, so I think he needs to get educated... Then I will work on my parents!

Crap morning at work. The rats are leaving the sinking ship and I'm the one left dealing with it all. ho hum. Will not cave to chocolate.

WillieWaggledagger · 09/05/2012 10:31

LF possibly the cooking in fat could mean there are more fat particles (or whatever they are) in the air in your kitchen?

this is just a suggestion i have no idea if this is the case!

LittleFrieda · 09/05/2012 10:35

Willie - Possibly true. But gross nonetheless. Ugh. Grin

LittleFrieda · 09/05/2012 10:40

DH is doing this WOE with me. His bootcamp finishes today and I think he's lost 10lb. [envy face] He plays tennis and is finding that his legs are weak. He has a couple of important mathes in the Herts tournament coming up and he's wondering if he can eat a few carbs before playing those matches in order to access some energy for the matches?

kandinskysgirl · 09/05/2012 11:13

Hello All,

I was on week one of bootcamp, lost four lb and then got ill, craved carbs, fell over and hurt myself and generally let it all slide and back to where I started. I'm better now, bruises have all recovered and I want to be slimmer and happier. Start a new job in a month and two days and would love to lose the best part of a stone in this time.

I can do it, I will do it. That's my mantra at the moment. Now off to read the rest of the thread.

MrsNouveauRichards · 09/05/2012 11:32

Morning.

Back on bootcamp for the rest of the week, was getting a bit slack and need to go back to basics. Scales were up this morning but I actually don't mind as I feel slimmer and can actually feel my tummy muscles Shock

Today's menu:
B - scrambled eggs
S - babybel
L - tuna salad with mayo
D - sausages, celeriac mash and veg (not sure what yet)

Managed to avoid the biscuits at playgroup, even had half a pint of water instead of a cup of tea

BIWItheBold · 09/05/2012 11:34

Welcome back, kandinskysgirl - glad you're healed/recovered!

LF - I don't really know the answer to your DH's 'predicament' - I know that my trainer is an advocate of low carbing, so presume training works on this basis. However there will obviously be a transition period for the body, 'teaching' it to burn fat rather than carbs prior to working out/playing tennis. I might err on the side of having to win, if I were him, and have something slightly more carbier before a match. Not sure what though. Porridge?

I know that my trainer, if he doesn't have time to eat before he's in the gym all day, uses a protein shake - and I think you can get these with varying levels of carbs - so maybe look into those as well.

And Envy that he's lost so much! Although men do, it's fair to say, have an advantage over women in this regard, generally losing more/more quickly.

(Maybe if you were really evil then you could tell him to have a really carby meal before his tennis match ... Grin)

Oops forgive me BIWI for I have sinned. I have visited the biscuit tin on more than one occasion today......

All the leftover goodies from DS2s birthday party have been calling and calling.....

I don't even like the way they taste so why did I carry on?

However back down 200g today to 81.5kg so stayed the same on last week thank god

I promise to do better tomorrow if I can avoid the pile of chocolate sitting in my cellar which my parents so kindly bought over for us

ohforfoxsake · 09/05/2012 12:35

I'm struggling with tiredness from the weekend - normally I'd keep myself going with 'treats'. Can barely keep my eyes open. Have eaten Brekkie, had my multi-vits, been for a 4 mile walk, drunk a litre of water. Any ideas? Other than a nap in front of Corrie now Smile

Thegoddessblossom · 09/05/2012 12:35

How do you make Celeriac chips?

Thegoddessblossom · 09/05/2012 12:36

OhFor - is there no way you can have a nap in front of corrie?

Thegoddessblossom · 09/05/2012 12:39

bugger just bought sweet potatoe at sainsbos and they are not on the allowed list....I did wonder....picked them up, put them back, picked them up again......

MNP · 09/05/2012 12:46

Off to kid sit for a friend for next 9-10 days.

Have done menu and shopping list.

B: crispy pan fried duck breast with lettuce
L: ham, cheese, carrot (I know BIWI but need crunch when driving)
D: meatballs and sauce

Not going on scales but tummy is behind not level with boobs as I look down so am pleased.

MNP · 09/05/2012 12:48

Eeks Goddess, 4ozs is 20+g carbs, it'll keep :o

MNP · 09/05/2012 12:48

Maybe roast and freeze for a Bootamp lite day?

LackaDAILYcarb · 09/05/2012 13:34

Having a shite few days. Joints flaring badly, not sleeping, stressed and incredibly grumpy (my poor DC Sad). I was falling asleep on my feet at work last night so resorted to a sugary pick me up Blush My stress levels were sky high this morning, thought I may as well be Hung for a sheep as a lamb, and have had a total carb fest Blush Blush
I am now feeling like a big heap of steaming crap Sad but also very angry with myself for not being able to resist. I am 43 and a physical wreck and worrying that I'll end up in the same state as one of my clients who has severe rheumatoid arthritis. Shovelling junk down my neck won't change it or make this disease go away, and really only made me feel good for a very short time.
Obviously emotional eating has not loosened it's grip on me just yet. I need to channel my inner Neris!

sorry for the rant, it's been a difficult few days.

Thegoddessblossom · 09/05/2012 13:39

Sorry to hear that Lack - chin up, it's a marathon not a sprint!

MNP - the kids will be eating them at the weekend. Fact. Grin

Lunch: stirfried spinach, mushrooms and asparagus heads, with a mackerel fillet, and a celery stick with pate. Stuffed.

Snack: baby bel

Swam me mile this morning.
