Bootcamp Week 4 - Come Whine With Me

BIWItheBold · 07/05/2012 12:00

Welcome everyone!

Now we're into the difficult weeks - those of us who are actually in week 4. You may have found that your weight loss slowed down last week or even - as for me - has gone back up again.

Don't panic!

This is very common. Keep on keeping on (my mantra for this WOE) and things will start to happen for you again soon.

Don't think it's all falling apart and 'treat' yourself by cheating. That will only exacerbate things, and you will very definitely be reporting back here with a weight loss or - worse - disappearing altogether, thoroughly disenchanted with yourself and the whole low carb thang.

If you're gaining, or not seeing any weight loss, have a long, hard look at what you were eating last week. Did you relax too much, if you moved to Bootcamp Light? Have you allowed carb creep to happen?

If you're doing as I suggested and keeping a food/drink diary, compare last week with your first week. Why not go back to what you ate/drank in that first week - especially if it was a week when you definitely did see a loss?

And remember, weeks 1 and 2 are weeks where you are primarily losing fluid. From weeks 3 onwards, we are now dealing with the fat - and the going will, naturally, be a lot tougher.

Reasonable, long-term and sustainable weight loss is 1-2lbs per week. I know that doesn't sound a lot, but that's 2-4 packs of lard.

Come and share what's working for you - how are you feeling about this WOE now, now that you're a bit more used to it? What tips can you give to your fellow MN Bootcampers?

What's frustrating you? How can we help to make it better, or work more easily for you?

I'm up again today, nearly back to where I was 3 weeks ago. I know I've eaten carbs but really not that many...I'm supposed to be maintaining and had hoped with this WOE I could eat freely (to an extent) on low carb without gaining....not sure what is going wrong. I'm having no starchy carbs at all, some wine, some very dark choc and some nuts...I'm horrified that that is enough to gain 5lbs in 2 weeks, I know my TOM is not helping but I'm seriously concerned that I may have to start restricting calories because I can't let this creep continue. Sad

This week I'm going to limit snacks, cut out nuts and cheese and wave goodbye to dark choc.

teaandthorazine · 08/05/2012 12:53

I'm up too, though not too much. TOTM on it's way as well and I definitely feel bloated, which I've not felt for weeks. Hardly surprising given the carbfest that was this weekend... wine, beer, bread, choc, crisps. There was a lot I didn't eat too, which just goes to show how insanely carby 'normal eating' is!

Back on the wagon since yesterday. I'm
not too fussed about the gain because I really feel as if this is a WOE not a diet. It's become about so much more than just losing weight (although that is obviously a lovely aspect!). I'm so much moreaware now of what I'm eating and why. the amount of sugar and starch I was consuming on a daily basis is gobsmacking now I know I can eat well without it. Dp was eating a pot of Yeo valley yoghurt over the weekend - 60g of carbs in the pot. Thats 3 times what I now eat on the average day!! Madness Grin

LittleFrieda · 08/05/2012 13:22

How much weight did people lose duing the 2 week bootcamp?

BIWItheBold · 08/05/2012 14:40

I think overall we lost more than 26 stone!

OP posts:
LittleFrieda · 08/05/2012 14:45

BIWI - Ha! Impressive. I meant each though Grin. My bootcamp is up tomorrow, I weighed myself yesterday and I'd lost 6lbs.

Thegoddessblossom · 08/05/2012 15:48

TBH I vaccilate between 9.5 and 9.3 on this WOE which is exactly the weights I swung between on a low fat diet.

But - I am fuller, able to go longer between meals, feel more satisfied and less hungry and eating a hugely greater variety of foods, healthier foods, and tastier foods. And drink much more water.

heartstart · 08/05/2012 16:40

I weighed this am a week in and have lost 3lbs which is fab given my weekend away.

londonone · 08/05/2012 19:00

ohforfoxsake - I could have written your earliuer post. Glad to hear you had a good time in Spain. I stepped off (I say stepped as it was a choice I was in control of!) the wagon briefly this weekend, but feel fully motivated and back in the swing already. Weirdly I bought myself a bar of godiva chocolate at the airport, ate one square and then didn't fancy any more and left it on the plane!

BIWItheBold · 08/05/2012 19:04

LF - I lost 7.25lbs. I was really pleased with that, given that I'd been low carbing since the beginning of February.

I am back to 12st. So 6lbs off after three weeks, I am struggling to drink enough water and I think I might be eating too many eggs which bung me up a bit. Also TOTM?

I think at the root of all this is a toddler who will NOT sleep, DH and I are at breaking point, 21mo and still wakes 2-3hourly. I am too tired to work, eat properly or have any kind of hobby, I am missing two weeks of pilates due to being away bit hopefully I will get some walking in as exercise. Wish me luck.

smokinaces · 08/05/2012 19:21

Today's picnic was a success. Little sausages, left over chicken, cheese. And managed to resist the donuts, ice freaks, sweets and cakes the others all had too.

smokinaces · 08/05/2012 19:22

Ice freaks. Ha ha. Ice creams!!

MrsNouveauRichards · 08/05/2012 20:44

slowly I feel for you with the non-sleeper. My two have been driving me mad with not going to bed. It is so hard to not eat crap when you are tired.

I have been struggling with breakfasts again. If I don't have a proper breakfast the whole day goes to pot. Need to get back on a bit stricter tomorrow.

SharonGless · 08/05/2012 21:09

Slowly, sorry to hear that. Have you asked HV for some tips. Are you going on holiday? Must have missed that.

Had total Greek yoghurt for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch and just made carbonara sauce - spaghetti for DH and sliced courgettes for me.

DH complaining about the amont of fat he is now eating in his diet. Family history of heart disease and he is worrying. I already make two meals in the week as due to work the children eat earlier. Not bloody making 3

slowlyburningcalories · 08/05/2012 21:19

Thanks for sympathy, it is challenging. HV says she is old enough to cry it out, which I won't do.

MrsNouveauRichards · 08/05/2012 21:24

I had to do it with DS at 6m. He was waking every hour, then using me as a dummy, I couldn't carry on. Wasn't as bad as I thought, huge improvement in 2 days, going from waking every hour, to sleeping 6hrs. But I know it is not for everyone.

Really struggled not to eat crackers with butter when DH was.

slowlyburningcalories · 08/05/2012 21:31

DD did that. But she was proper full on feeding and there is a growth spurt around that time so we just lived with it. But 21months in we are exhausted and not enjoying being a family.

BIWItheBold · 08/05/2012 21:53

Sharon - I am working my way through an amazing/shocking book at the moment called The Diet Delusion, by Gary Taubes. The 'decision' that fat is bad for your heart was made in the late 50s/early 60s and is based on flawed research interpretation. There is actually very little evidence linking saturated fat to heart disease.

And guess what? The data that the scientists chose to overlook/ignore proves that it is carbohydrate that contributes to heart disease.

So your DH need not worry. Fat is a good thing.

Dr John Briffa also refers to this same research in his book Escape the Diet Trap, which is a little bit more readable than the Taubes tome (almost 500 pages, 45 pages of notes and a 60 page bibliography!)

you have my sympathy slowly, eldest DS was the same, horrific for much of his toddler years. We all made it through, but I remember the desperate need to sleep whenever and wherever I could (nodded off in sainsburys car park - woken by an anxious trolley-man knocking on the window concerned something had happened to us both).

today has been a bit off diet-wise
B- flax bread with smoked salmon pate
L - dairylea cheese string and salad
S - curry and lots of kale, blueberry and cream
nibbled on cauliflower mini-pizza bases with pate, some celery etc - was v hungry today

teaandthorazine · 08/05/2012 21:56

slowly - sympathies. Ds was the same and it was maddening and exhausting. I'm amazed you're not face down in a bowl of chocolate tbh...

Protein shake with flaxseed this morning. Kept me going for ages, which was lucky as I didn't get it together enough to make lunch today. So, a couple of handfuls of macadamias in the car and a litre of water. I did nab a low-carb choc chip muffin when I got in (am not bootcamping btw! Wink)

Dinner was chicken breast in a cheesy, mushroomy sauce and a mahoooosive pile of steamed kale and broccoli. YUM. More water.

Am definitely retaining water atm (TOTM). Need to drink more. Am on a 12-hour shift tomorrow so have already made 'leftover-lunch' so I don't get caught out again. Organisation!

LittleFrieda · 08/05/2012 21:58

Sorry about the sleep problems of little ones. My four year old used to wake up and feel 'lonely' when he was 2. In the end we made a little cotbed mattress up on the floor next to our bed. He came and slept there for about a week and after that he stopped coming. I think he wanted to join us when we didn't want him to: but as soon as we made it clear he was invited, he wasn't that bothered.

B bacon, egg, mushrooms
L caesar salad
D Spatchcock chicken with stir fried vegetables (spinach, broc, spring onions and tiny bit so chilli)

Snacks - none
Water - 2 L
Tea - 2 cups with tiny dash of milk

slowlyburningcalories · 08/05/2012 22:07

tea for the first time in three weeks I fell into the bread bin.

5 White slices. God it's sweet isn't it?

Thegoddessblossom · 08/05/2012 22:17

Lunch: amazeballs salad from work canteen protein salad bar - chicken, broccoli, coleslaw, roasted veg etc

Tea: chicken thighs, celery, mushrooms, brie, plum tomatoes, asparagus heads.

Snacks: 1 glass red, some nuts, 2 squares dark choc.

BettyBathroom · 08/05/2012 22:27

Breakfast - egg & tomato salad
Lunch - Mushroom soup
Dinner - Paneer Masala with caulifower rice, yoghurt, glass of red

Lots of water and 2 Green Teas.

SharonGless · 08/05/2012 22:28

BIWI that's dedication to the cause!

Have ordered escape the diet trap so I'll see if Dh will read.
He has cut out bread and reduced amount of crap snacks he eats
