BIWI's Bootcamp - Week 3 Weigh In - New Starters Welcome!

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 29/04/2012 17:52

So our two weeks of Bootcamp seem to have gone well, with some spectacular losses. Between us I think we have lost enough to make 3 or 4 new MNetters!

It's up to you now how you want to proceed. If you have a lot of weight to lose, or you like the strictness of it, you can carry on with Bootcamp. New joiners should start with Bootcamp anyway.

If you are nearly at your target, or you were finding Bootcamp a bit too restrictive, then you can move to Bootcamp Light - or you could do a hybrid of the two, which is what I am doing - Bootcamp Monday to Thursday and Bootcamp Light Friday to Sunday (which means that you can include alcohol at the weekend!)

As a reminder, or for those who are new, these are the Bootcamp rules:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

And this is the allowed list of veg:

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g
Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4
Spinach0.8

Thanks BIWI
I have serious suspicions about his dedication to this WOE eating anyway Am going to investigate his car for hidden crisp packets.

WillieWaggledagger · 04/05/2012 13:17

you're quite right marabou - before i might have bought a loaf of bread to last a few days and what with (unplanned for) snacking on toast or having an extra slice etc before I knew it was gone and had to buy another loaf

it's more difficult to absentmindedly cook and eat a fried egg

PostBellumBugsy · 04/05/2012 13:20

cheaper options:

Tinned fish - specially things like sardines, mackerel, kippers etc
Chicken thighs
Corned beef
Gammon
Offal - I can do kidneys - but that's about it
Freezer section - is cheaper for virtually every meat / fish product you can buy fresh.

Veg
Try and stick to seasonal things, they tend to be cheaper
Again freezer section is really good for spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans

Value eggs are about 99p in most of the major chains
Giant lump of cheddar can usually be found for £3/4 - if you go own brand

Eat as much fat as you can, as this makes you feel full.

Marabou · 04/05/2012 13:40

Those are some good ideas Bugsy.

I buy a 30-pack of Cook's value eggs from Asda for £2.99 and this usually lasts me a week:). Asda's Smart Price-range is also very good for tinned tuna (£0.49 for a tin of tuna flakes) and cheese etc. I also buy meat, chicken and fish frozen usually from Iceland, as I find it's cheapest and then my semi-local butcher's is very cheap..

Marabou · 04/05/2012 13:42

Oh and I thought to say that some of the veggies you could probably grow yourself, but I know nothing of such thingsGrin..

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 04/05/2012 14:01

Thanks, everyone. I now there are bits of meat, etc cheaper, it seems to be because everything I'm eating is meals, as daft as that sounds! I would normally make for example, a curry. Only myself and DD, who's not a big meat eater. That curry would be with rice, garlic naan, whatever, for dinner that night for the two of us, plus a full portion another dinner during the week for me, and probably a little bit extra for a small meal or whenever it came in handy. Now, I'm making a whatever for dinner, DD probably will barely eat it because its too meaty, or has leeks or whatever I put in to bulk it out, as she did with the shepherds pie, so I end up doing her something else. I'm having more of that meal, and will also have it for lunch the next day as I can't have a sandwich or jacket potato, so I'm not getting any portions to use for dinners later in the week.

That was really long, sorry! I also find I'm spending a fortune on cream, soft cheese, and full fat greek yoghurt. I am going to have a go making a frittata or an eggless quiche this afternoon, as I hope it might be better if I have something I can just pull out of the fridge. If I'm hungry, I'm more likely to cheat, and, tbh, I actually prefer snacks to meals. I have a freezer full of veg!

Reading that back, part of the answer is to stop feeding my DD! Any ways to stop an 8 year old turning into a picky bugger? She used to be such a good eater.

Moggiemad · 04/05/2012 14:38

Hi Everyone
Moggie reporting in. Im feeling better and have weighed myself. Im 12st 7. I badly want to see number 11 on the scales, and Im with you in bootcamp light. This thread is a great source of support and thanks to all of you, especially BIWI who started it all. Heres hoping for a good loss next week.

ANTagony · 04/05/2012 15:26

I have little cubes of cheese, pickled onions and cornichons, tesco frozen cocktail sausages, aldi kabanos and cooked chicken chunks in the fridge. I mix mayonnaise with Cajun spice as a dip to go with the chicken. All quite cheep stuff.

I'm just starting to master bulk low carb cooking. I did a big batch meat and veg curry with spices, lots of chicken, cauliflower florets, peppers, green beens, tomatos, tomato puree, chicken stock, butter and celeriac cubes. It was a really bulky meal and has frozen well, DH warmed some in the microwave at work so it passed his test. The celeriac cubes are like chunks of potato in the curry so once you get beyond the psychological thing that the rice is missing it is really filling and the textures are all their.

The low carb mince dish is also a really good bulk up and freeze recipe. I put celeriac cubes in the adult portions and the children have a mash top or pasta with theirs.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 04/05/2012 16:30

FROZEN COCKTAIL SAUSAGES!!! Ant, I think I may love you. How could I forget them, I love them! I have never tried celeriac, and it's been out of stock so far this week wherever I have tried, quite interested in trying that. I find swede can sometimes fool me a bit, as it's a bit grainy.

I have just made a crustless quiche, it's lovely! Really, really nice. Hopefully that will help with the snack aspect of things. I'll have a nosy see if there's already a recipe on the recipe thread, if not I shall add it.

Hepsibaaah · 04/05/2012 17:04

welcome back moggie, glad you're feeling better :)

BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 17:11

Swede grainy? Never! Boil until soft (about 20-25 mins), drain, add large knob of butter and puree with a hand blender. It is beautifully soft and absolutely lush!

BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 17:12

ANTagony - just check the carb count of those sausages - they can be surprisingly high.

mummyduff · 04/05/2012 17:19

OMG sombody help me I'm due on and craving sweet things Angry

dreamofwhitehorses · 04/05/2012 17:30

Hi there I'm a lurker (on the wieghtloss threads anyway) but have been low carbing along with you. On the money saving front I just wanted to recommend Liddls. They do a bucket of Greek yogurt (1000g) for £1.50 2.8g carb/100g. there mayo I think is lower than hellmans 1.3g carb/100g and only 89p. They are also doing free range eggs for 95p for 6. also the meat is all a lot cheaper than suermarkets and very good quality. Olive oil is also good value there.
BTW Thankyou BIWI. I am finding this so helpful. Today was my day off and I have had fun experimenting with ideas on the recipe thread!

Hepsibaaah · 04/05/2012 17:42

mummyduff
are you on BC light? If so have a BIG glass of water and a handful of blueberries in cream, it will help.

BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 18:00

You're welcome, dreamofwhitehorses!

mummyduff - don't give in!

mummyduff · 04/05/2012 18:32

Thanks ladies have just had blueberries in cream and more water, mind over matter.
Its mad I dont even normally like sweet things Confused

BerylStreep · 04/05/2012 22:12

Ello all,

Sorry I am only updating now. I am pleased to say that I was 87.4kg this morning, so a total of 3kg lost (6.6 lb) since the start of bootcamp.

Have strayed off the wagon today, as I had a scone this morning during a meeting, then DS had his b'day party tonight and I caved a bit. I have been so strict to date, so will be firmly back on the wagon tomorrow.

Haven't had a chance to read the thread, so hope everyone else is doing well.

OliviaLMumsnet · 04/05/2012 22:46

More chilli for me.
And my shopping has arrived with a ridiculously large packet of protein shake so fingers crossed this is all go for superlocarb me and superresults

Marabou · 04/05/2012 23:42

Evening all,

BC day1 went relatively well and foodwise exactly as planned. Ended up just having leftover fetasalad from lunch for dinner and tossed in a handful of green olives and some tuna. Also drank about 3.5 litres of water and a big cup of rooibos earl grey.

Now I'm feeling reeeaallyy tired though and can hardly concentrate. I work from home and had thought to finish off some work and go to sleep by 1.30am, but looks like I will have to call it a night now. Zzzzzzzzz

LackaDAILYcarb · 05/05/2012 07:52

Has this thread taken over from the chat one? there seems much more traffic here!

Just a quick one for TheEternalOptimist. There is a shopping list in the IPD book. I'll copy it snd post it later when I'm om the big pooter as it is impossible on my phone.

I had a wine and 85% chocolate blow out last night but am still showing a half pound loss this morning Confused. It will come back and settle bite me on the bum won't it?

NotMostPeople · 05/05/2012 09:19

As I suspected I fell off the rails and ate about six mini eggs and a couple of glasses of wine. I've hurt my leg, it was painful and I felt sorry for myself.

Im going to be good again.

BIWItheBold · 05/05/2012 09:31

Morning all!

Just to say - next weigh-in will be Monday

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/05/2012 09:48

Morning Brew

Jacaqueen · 05/05/2012 10:15

I have now lost 15lbs since the start of bootcamp.

I went to Ikea last night to buy a kitchen and was so traumatised by it all I had to have a couple of large G&T's when I got home. But I didn't have a hot dog and I didn't but any Daim bars, so not too bad.

Lidl yoghurt for early breakfast and going to do a fry up early lunch.
