BIWI's Two Week Low Carb Boot Camp - starts Monday 16 April

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 06/04/2012 22:41

I've been back low carbing seriously since February and have lost a stone (almost). I have another 1.5 stones to lose.

It's been going well for me, but I have slowed down in the last month and I'm keen to get things back on track and up the speed of my weight loss. To that end, I have devised a strict two week bootcamp.

It will start on Monday 16 April to give anyone who wants to join in time to sort themselves out, get planning and generally get themselves ready to join in.

Who's up for it?

eggkr - once ketosis kicks in (which is generally after 2-3 days) you will find that your appetite is vastly reduced. If you look at my food diary you will see that on many days I only ever have one boiled egg for breakfast. And that will last me quite easily till around 1.30/2.00pm without me ever even thinking about food or being hungry.

Definitely no fruit in the bootcamp!

If you have a microwave at work, then it does make things easier. I often eat leftovers from the previous night's dinner - take it into work in a plastic box to re-heat - sorted!

Sam - I think porridge is actually quite high in carbs, is it not? Ideally you should be looking to get your carbs from veg/salad.

Hurrah! Welcome, Custy! You can help me keep everyone inspired and motivated!

For all you vegetarians - I had forgotten that I have a cook book, written by Rose Elliot, called "The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet Cookbook". It was written fairly recently and has some lovely recipes in it. If you go to her website some of her recipes are on there:

Marking my place. I'm in. 7 kg to lose. V. interesting info from BIWI. Why are low fat yogurts not recommended? I understand that fat is not the enemy, but surely we shouldn't be trying to eat as much fat as poss, or should we?

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 16:02

Yep! Fat is good. Apart from that, low fat stuff often has sugar or other stuff in it to replace the fat.

I would really like to give this a go. I am wheat intolerant so not into pasta or bread anyway, but porridge.... and fruit....
However I am still BFing BabyTwit (9mths). I have read a bit, and as he's no longer EBF before 6mths etc and as long as my calories don't drop too much I should be ok. I am uncertain about whether ketosis would release any baddies into my milk though?
I am taking Pregnacre so have a vitamin supplement already, and also drink lots of water what with no wheat fibre.

My problem is that I seem to 'need' sweet stuff to keep me awake and to give me energy - I'm hoping that doing this diet might help me stop feeling so dull and sluggish.
My other problem is that I don't have much £ to spend.
I hope you will give a daily menu, because I'm a bit shit at feeding myself and would end up eating eggs and salad all the time.

eggkr · 08/04/2012 18:12

feel the same twit, not much money and constantly knackered with a young baby and job.
Though when i think of the vast wardrobe of clothes i have to wear if i drop a size then its probably all relative.
What is boot camp btw?

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 18:13

The sweet stuff that you 'need' is actually what is making you feel so dull and sluggish - your blood sugar levels will be dropping too low all the time if you're eating a high carb diet.

here is a thread about low-carbing and breast-feeding

I wasn't planning on doing daily menus, tbh! Although I'm happy to post what I am planning to eat, as I menu plan for the whole family. But eggs and salad aren't a bad start ... Grin

I'm absolutely up for this BIWI. Will read everything when I get home and can go on my computer.

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 18:13

Sorry - that link won't take you to the right thread - hang on and I'll c+p

"Q:Don't need to know for me - those days have long since passed! - but for someone else who has asked me. Is it safe to low carb during breast-feeding?

I have it in my head that it's not, but have no idea why. I know that any kind of restrictive diet isn't advised whilst bf, but can't see why low carbing - at a reasonable level of carbs - wouldn't be OK?

Does anyone know more/better/have any specific experience?

thanks

A1:I don't have personal experience but I'm sure its fine. You may have to increase your intake by a bit, and certainly eat plenty of good healthy fats, but the body is designed to work well on low carb so no reason why it should be a problem.

A2:well the hunter gatherers did it and the human race didn't die out as far as I'm aware.....

A3: The message these days is that you can pretty much eat or drink anything whilst breastfeeding - ergo can't see why low-carbing would be a problem."

Now these answers weren't from anyone medically qualified, and I am not medically qualified in any way, shape or form - if you're concerned, please ask your GP/health visitor/midwife

Pistey! Surely you don't need to do this? You'll disappear!

Please may I join. I was on Low carb from October to December and lost 10kg BUT a 6 week holiday home to South Africa put firmly paid to that. I am now only 2kg up from the initial loss but still have another 20 15kg to lose.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/04/2012 18:24

Bless you BIWI - tis creeping back Sad

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 18:24

Welcome, bbbb!

Ah yes, Pistey - that pesky maintenance issue Sad

Please count me in. Smile

I've never done a low carb diet before because I love, love, love, bread and potatoes but I've got half a stone that I have been trying to shift for months.

I eat quite sensibly (as in lots of veg & salads) and don't have cakes or biscuits so I can only think it's the carbs that are keeping the weight on.

Low carb. seems to be the only way to go.

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 18:36

I'm in.
I reached the shocking weight of 25 stone and lost seven through low carbing.
I took a year off trying to lose on medical advice to give my body time to adust and my weight has stabilised at 18.5 stone.
Started again last week with dukan - and gained a pound in seven days.
I know this works for me. Can't wait!

BIWI hoping we can keep you inspired and focused and you can keep us on track.

Twit · 08/04/2012 19:21

Thanks for your reply, I read on Kellymom that long distance runners who BF have no problems, that it was more a calorie intake thing rather than anything else, so I think I will go for it. I'm only cutting out the sweet shit and upping meat and salad really aren;t I?

I might be ok with seafood and fish and chicken too thinking about it. But how do I keep the calories I need? ANd I hate cooking etc so would like to 'grab and go' in the day and adjust what I cook for everyone in the eveinig (which I already do with not eating wheat etc)
I also need a good quick breakfast, what with the school run and 4 dc's to deliver by 8:40 and BabyTwit. Shock For me breakfast is my must have meal if you know what I mean?

You know that bacon joint you can buy and cook yourself, can you eat that or is it on the processed list and therefore not 'allowed' yet?

Twit · 08/04/2012 19:27

Will you be giving us ideas for what to get ready for The Big Day? I'm a bit nervous and excited.
eggkr I can't wait to be able to fit into more than one pair of jeans. Fingers crossed that by BabyTwit's birthday (end of June) I'll be on my way to wearing some of my normal clothes and feeling fit and comfy in them.

I hope tesco's ready made peashoot salad is ok? Wink

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 20:42

I shall be thinking of what to advise people, Twit!
